Note: Ike at Shea, Offends Reporter
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 26, 2008 1:43 pm

The Mets announced the signing of No.1 pick Ike Davis prior to Tuesday’s game against the Mariners.

The two sides agreed to a 1.65 million signing bonus, as Jon Heyman first reported at SI.com earlier in the day.

Davis reported to Class-A Brooklyn yesterday, and wasted no time making a negative impression on a reporter from the Times Herald-Record, who writes:

“Earlier today, one of my colleagues, staff writer Mira Wassef, a hard-working and conscientious reporter, went to Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill to interview Davis.  According to Mira, and I totally believe her, once she walked into the Brooklyn clubhouse, several players began whistling at her and making cat calls.  She was unnerved to say the very least… The performance by the Cyclones was pathetic.  A disgrace…

“Mira asked if Davis had a few minutes to talk for an interview.  His reply?  ‘I’m not playing tonight, sweetheart. We don’t have anything to talk about.’…

“I spoke to Mira shortly after she left Brooklyn’s clubhouse and she was clearly shaken by the behavior of Davis and some of his teammates.  She did say Reese Havens is a gentleman.

“Good job, Reese, but that still doesn’t make up for Davis’s disgraceful act.  So here’s what you need to do, Ike: Be a man, not a punk.  Ike Davis, the Brooklyn Cyclones and Mets owe Mira Wassef a public apology.”

that is probably true, assuming this report is accurate…also true, though, is that davis, like most guys his age, have a lot of learning and growing up yet to do…yes, ike’s behavior is inexcusable…then again, a lot of boys his age act in a way that is not excusable…the goal here should be for him to apologize, hopefully learn his lesson and grow from it

  1. Tidewater says:

Let’s not blame Ike. Remember, his father was a Yankee, so it’s unlikely he was raised right.

    • I didn’t realize how many comments this story would get when I sent it to Matt.

I get called sweetheart, sweetie, hun, honey by women all the time it’s a cultural thing more than anything. down here in South Carolina. My fiancee gets called sweetheart, sweetie and hun by men all the time where she works.

I don’t see the big deal.

      • TobeRinkler says:

It’s different in New York, that’s all. We don’t have those remnants of southern culture to inform our daily cultural interactions.

      • makeitallwright says:

I think it was more than the “sweetheart” that was offensive. As a woman, and a journalist, you want to be taken seriously. She should get the same respect any male would have gotten walking into that clubhouse. Not cat calls and whistling. The kid was the #1 Mets pick – obviously there is a story there – whether he is playing that night or not.

  2. krumbledkookie says:

Don’t use the age excuse, Matt. 20 year olds are not kids. They should know better.

    • Wright88 says:

omg…is this really in a newspaper? Hey the Mets won last night, so how about we talk about what was said in a low A ball locker room. Of course major league baseball players do not act like this at all..I mean ARod wasn’t seen hanging around with a stripper…oh wait…at least Bonds was loyal to his wife…damn wrong again….hey what about LoDuca…..wait no..

      • DK says:

if this account is even true… i am not totally devastated.

        • UpperDeckDweller says:

This was certainly in the newspaper, its a local publication printed in the Hudson Valley where I live. While this may not be devastating to most people it is surely not what the Mets organization should be acting like. Kudos to Matt for not only reading a small newspaper from Middletown NY but for acknowledging the inappropriate behavior exhibited instead of simply ignoring it and sweeping it under the rug.

As for the Yanks not raising their kids properly, as funny a comment as it was, the Yankees were one of the first teams in the majors to allow women in the locker room to do interviews in the form of Susan Waldman. As annoying as she can be, she was a trailblazer for a lot of women in sports journalism and the display by the minor league mets set back that progress a few years with that display.

That being said, I’m quite sure it was one of those mob-mentality kind of things, boys being boys, etc and I fully anticipate an apology to be issued within the next day or so.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Suzyn herself set back that progress with her “Roga Clemens is in Jawgiez Bawx” fiasco.

        • UpperDeckDweller says:

          “Oh My Goodness Gracious!”

hahaha that was probably the funniest sound-bite of all time

      • Ceetar says:

While I agree it’s a ridiculous story fueled by a whiny reporter(what else is new?) you’re examples of people aren’t good as they were all personal situations versus workplace situations.

Obviously writers and reporters will remember this ‘incident’ and claim Ike is ‘overrated’ for years to come.

    • gameball says:

20 year old athletes are kids, and the ones who do know better are the exceptions.

      • OrangEandBlue says:

Stop making excuses. 20 year olds are not kids, they are just too lazy to act properly.

That is the sad thing about today’s society, the young adults that act respectfully are considered the exceptions.

Maybe we should raise the drinking age to 30 and the driving age to 25 if we are going to have the attitude that 20 year olds are kids.

Grow up and learn your manners.

        • ravin108 says:

I’m 20, and its not that hard to be respectful.
An no, I don’t think 20 year olds today are more disrespectful than “in the good ol days”. You are just looking at it from a different perspective

        • ravin108 says:

Also, remember that these guys are baseball players and its harder to mature when you spend more time in baseball clubhouses than classrooms or doing real jobs

    • MetMaven says:

Hi swing looks better than Delgado’s. Bring him up!!!!

    • NYsportsGUY says:

She was probably really hot if this indeed happened

  3. dwright012 says:

Oh wah.. I for one care about this not at all…

  4. CitizenSnips says:

Pffft don’t believe the Times Herald Record. I’ve been reading that paper for over 20 years and they’re just a bunch of hacks.

    • Adam_Jones says:

Then why have you been reading it for 20 years? Aren’t you just as responsible for keeping these “hacks” with a profession if you’re paying money to read their publication?

  5. fatsfox says:

He called her Sweatheart, not a c u next tuesday. Unless he was more demeaning and disrespectful than it appears here no apology is needed, imo.

    • debmc says:

I find the “sweetheart” comment to be very derogatory and insulting; if I were the female reporter, it would certainly be insulting to me. It’s demeaning, condescending, and improper, imo.

      • fatsfox says:

Did you read the full article? It seems more like this guy has a crush on this women and is playing Blog White Knight.
If you were a reporter trying to make it in NY sports I guess you would need thicker skin. SweetHeart is just a word and not even a nasty one, like Studmuffin.

        • TobeRinkler says:

          “woman” = one grown female
“women” = more than one grown female

(& thanks for helping me finally realize what “see you next tuesday” really means. I never realized that before, & now a specific joke from American Dad makes a lot more sense to me.)

        • fatsfox says:

          Thanks, Grammar Nazi!

      • mymetsrock says:

        oh puh-lease!

who cares if he called her “sweetheart”

they send a woman into the clubhouse and just
expect that the fact that she’s female will be
completely ignored by every young man in there?

come on. if she is a reporter she better toughen up.

      • zer09 says:

Honestly, this is such crap. He did seem a bit snippy from the story, but what kind of idiotic PC society do we live in where calling a woman “sweetheart” is offensive? What the hell is going on…

      • dykstraw II says:

then honestly, deb, i don’t think you belong in a professional locker room.

    • DK says:

more importantly… can we get a pic of the reporter

      • mouserdz says:

First thing I did was trying to google her pic. No luck. My bet she’s no Julie Donaldson or Erin Andrews.

  6. garykeithron says:

i’ll worry about this when he’s in the bigs

  7. dave27 says:

    “Disgrace”

    “Pathetic”

Can someone tell this reporter to ease up a bit?

We’re all impressed by the chivalry this reporter is showing by running to the defense of Ms. Yassef, but this is a complete non-story on any level.

    • krumbledkookie says:

Women don’t like being called “sweetheart” without reason. It’s demeaning.

    • CitizenSnips says:

Listen if the media can blow up on Imus for asking whether a person is black or not I’m sure they can make a story out of this too. The Time-Herald Record is notorious for trying to make the Mets look bad in any way. Their front pages go as follows:

      If Yankees play:
Front: Yankees win, Mets a few pages in
Front: Yankees lose, Mets a few pages in

      If Yankees don’t play:
Front: Mets win, Yankees for the rest of the sports section
Front: Some non-story about the Yankees, Mets a few pages back.

      • Adam_Jones says:

You’re forgetting the most crucial part of the Imus conversation. The media is not getting on him for his line, “Well, what color is he?” Instead they are getting on him for his response of “Well, there ya go.”

        • CitizenSnips says:

…which infered that police were getting on his case juts because he was black. I don’t see how it’s a big issue.

        • starz31 says:

Yea that really isn’t a big deal. He made a crack at a common stereotype that is overplayed through music and TV. If a black person said it, no issue. If a white person said it, big issue. That difference right there is racist.

Imus also works with other african-americans on his show and they didn’t miss a beat knowing that it is a common stereotype and that he was being sarcastic.

The big issue with that is that Pacman Jones said he would pray for him…Pacman praying is something I can’t believe.

About this article, a female in a male locker must understand what goes on there.

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

ditto for the POST, Daily News, Newsday, Bergen Record, Journal News, etc….my point is the ALL DO IT!!!!

    • NegativeFan says:

Chivalry my a**. He wants to get with her!

  8. ness589 says:

That’s it? Who cares? It’s rude but nothing to make a huge fuss over. It’s not like he did anything physically inappropriate to her.

  9. Tidewater says:

I like in the video listening to him describe himself as a good all around player.

Methinks he’s in for some lumps. I hope he handles them well.

  10. Ryn05 says:

    I don’t see a story here.

    • Tidewater says:

It’s at the top, just before the comments start. Or were you not being that literal?

  11. debmc says:

Another less than great tidbit about yet another cog in the Mets organization. And they just keep on piling on…. honestly, in the interview Davis did with Kevin Burkhardt the other day on SNY, I picked up an undercurrent of a real attitude on the part of Davis, but did not give it another thought until now.

Punkasz kid needs to be taught, right now, that this is NOT the way to behave, either in the clubhouse, on the field, on the road, in the park, or, indeed, anywhere.

    • zer09 says:

You’re not his parent to discipline him…unless ufcourse there’s something really inappropriate. He didn’t cross any boundaries – he was just rude. It’s not something the organization can punish him for…

That said, someone should definitely talk to him about being nice and staying on the good side of the NY media…

    • beltran the warrior says:

      oh puh-leese….

  12. mrose says:

I agree with the poster above..this is some chump guy for the Times Herald Record. I grew up in OrangE county and read this paper for many years and its sports section (among the rest of it) was deplorable. In addition, he calls himself “J-Rod” which is just pathetic, and 11 years? That would mean he had started covering sports in the hudson valley when i was 16-17….I don’t remember his name whatsoever.

This is a tool trying to make a name for himself… He went way overboard in hoping to get noticed…it worked

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

Actually MROSE he has been working there for that long…i guess you just werent reading yet!!!! he is a good reporter and has now moved on to do some work for ESPN.com….

Not sure if this happened, but seems likely…No reason to bash a news paper when you just dont like the OPINIONS of its sports writers….

      • mrose says:

        ok…worst nickname ever…
Go to all of the local counties that this paper serves before you tell me not to bash it…i’m not alone in my opinion there. My mother worked there for years for that matter…and they don’t even treat employees with the respect they deserve.
I didn’t make any personal insults, and wow, way to grow up and say that I wasn’t reading at 16/17…you are clever boy…
Good for J-Rod if hes writing for ESPN Soccer now…that has nothing to do with baseball and possibly soccer players act differently too, but to make this extremely overdrawn call out for attention whether its for him or for her or just for other publicity is just sad.
The Times Herald Record is typically called a “RAG”.

        • DK says:

why are you always so angry?

        • mrose says:

was this directed at me? if so…

i’m actually a very nice person, but my opinion of this article and writer was stated and then this guy chose to try to personally attack me and my opinion

Look through my posts, I typically only get angry when, well, someone else is angry

          if not…

          he should calm down:)

        • hjhjhjhjhj says:

First of all I am from one of those counties….and if no one liked this paper then why is it the ONLY one there…must be doing something right… my point was more to you about bashing someone you obviously DONT know or have any knowledge of….

your mom must have had no issues since she worked there for “years”….so not really sure where you are going with that…

You didnt make any personal attacks…how about…
this is some chump guy…..or … In addition, he calls himself “J-Rod” which is just pathetic,….

oh ya and mrose seems to be a play on the first letter of your first name and part of your last…kind of like j-rod….

by the way, stay away from soccer…obviously that sport is a little too complicated for you !!!

        • mrose says:

dude, you are quite the loser and probably the most ridiculous person on this blog. Attacking a person on here, who states their opinion for what? MAYBE a few thousand people is slightly different for portraying it like he did.
chump guy, is a lot different than saying “you can’t read”. And yea mrose is a play on my first name and last name, but you know what? its probably more original than anything-rod.
And how does your comment about soccer make ANY sense at all? I was basically saying that since those are the ESPN articles he writes, maybe those players are different with the media…
And lets see, It IS a rag, many people think so and it stays in business the same way the NY Post manages to, even though the NY Post has much more competition. There will always be people who read it. Also, by being able to read online articles or more quality newspapers, you realize how bad other papers are. Perhaps you should get out more.
Do not even start talking about my mother, you will draw the line there. What job do you leave if you are bieng paid? I’m sure you have LOVED every job you have ever had, right? right? If so you are VERY lucky. If you don’t like your job, but you have a family and bills to pay, you do it, and then when you find a better job, you leave. Welcome to how life works.

        • TobeRinkler says:

I’m a lot more ridiculous than either of you, thanks.

      • starz31 says:

because we dont like the opinions of its sports writers? thats a poor statement. just read Wallace Matthews of Newsday and Bart from NYpost and maybe if they wrote opinions on facts you might be right.

  13. Ryn05 says:

I would like to thank whoever removed that comment by Mets Fan.

    it’s a good start

  14. Deeg says:

So when does Ike’s rap album come out?

  15. hot stove chef says:

Can we get a pic of Mira to understand exactly what the hub bub was about? For research and objectivity purposed of course.

  16. zen says:

are you sure it wasn’t in the san diego padres visitor’s dugout?

  17. K-Hern says:

I wish I could walk into a clubhouse full of ladies and be called sweetheart

  18. ToastyJoe says:

Am I the only one who just did a Google Image Search of “Mira Wassef”? I sicken me.

    • Danny says:

      Mira Sorvino’s not bad.

    • Adam_Jones says:

I think we all did. Regardless of what she looks like I’m sure Heidi Watney has her beat. For those who don’t know, Heidi is NESN’s equivalent of Kevin Burkhardt. Why do the red sox GET EVERYTHING? :(.

  19. RetireNumber17 says:

I’ve got a bad feeling about this kid. He’s drafted as a power hitter, but he doesn’t have a power-hitter’s body. Maybe he’ll fill out, but I’m thinking we got another Shawn Abner here…

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

He’s not a pure power hitter though. He described himself as a gap hitter who can hit home runs. Think David Wright.

      • starz31 says:

But david wright doesnt go around calling female reporters sweetheart, he keeps that behind the scenes in his 6 million $$ bachelor pad….

  20. Bobby Bones in SC says:

If he did this then yes it does seem disrepectful. However, he is in a clubhouse with his new teammates and I’m sure he was probably as nervous as she was. Probably was worried about taking some flack from fellow players. Still not a good excuse.

Might go back to the theme of too much money for a young athelete = too big of a head and attitude

  21. adropofvenom says:

There are certain places that chivalry isn’t to be expected…..a testosterone filled sports clubhouse is one of them. If you’re a good looking young woman going to put yourself into that enviornment you should expect a few people to act like complete jerks. It’s just the reality of the matter. The reporter bringing this up is acting like this would be any different if it was any other professional sports clubhouse. Trust me, it wouldn’t be.

I’m not condoning it, but if that hurt her feelings then she has a long ways to go before becoming any sort of serious reporter.

  22. GregB says:

“yes, ike’s behavior is inexcusable…then again”

can you really call something inexcusable and then excuse it?

There is no excuse for his behavior or that of his teammates. The Mets should knock some heads together in Brooklyn and make it clear that that is not how to represent the New York Mets organization.

Pride and professionalism should start from the bottom up. You can’t expect these players to act like pros in the majors if you don’t teach it in the minors. The fact that it was ’several players’ and not just one of the new guys says the Mets are not teaching these kids right.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I’d really like to believe that the 1.65 mil went to this kid’s head and he thinks he’s above the rest now. However, with a comment like that (if it was true), the truth lies in the fact he already was a jerk, because as an adult, you don’t ’suddenly’ become immature. Sounds like he hasn’t grown up yet.

Here’s hoping he gets a clue if/when he ever gets to the majors.

I agree, GregB. But the Mets shouldn’t have to be responsible to make these kids grow up. That should have been taught long before. If I was this kid’s parents and read that, I’d take a ride to Brooklyn and knock is head myself…..

      • GregB says:

“If I was this kid’s parents and read that, I’d take a ride to Brooklyn and knock is head myself…..”

        LOL

        maybe they will. :-)

BTW, i just read the stories the writer did on Davis and Havens…they’re available at www recordonline dot com…she did a good job on both…you wouldn’t know from the article that she had any problem with Davis at all…that’s called being professional.

writers and players both have jobs to do and their interaction should be done in a professional manner…clearly the writer held up her end…Davis didn’t, but he’ll get another chance.

    • theperfectgame says:

I completely agree with GregB. I also think that reporters, male or female, in fact all non-Mets personnel, should not be allowed in the clubhouse. There should be a time and a place for pre- and post-game interviews, and the players should be responsible for that. I mean, the ideal solution is for the players to simply treat their jobs and everything that comes with it with the utmost respect, but since that doesn’t seem likely, a lot of these problems would be avoided by just giving the players some private space to act like morons with each other.

Davis is probably getting an unfair amount of the blame here, but there’s an easy way to avoid that. Ask Reese Havens. A little thought and respect goes a long way.

  23. ravi3 says:

“According to Mira, and I totally believe her…”

I don’t know about anyone of you, but the above quote sort of struck me as unprofessional….Aren’t journalists supposed to be unbiased?

Then again after what I’ve seen over the past few days (as well the things I’ve read throughout the course of my Mets fandomship), objective reporting has fallen by the wayside

  24. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

I wonder what she looks like…

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      Oh, that is just bad….

What difference does it make? He’s 20? I’ll bet she was old enough to be his mother. And if so, would he treat his mother like that?

      • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

What makes you think she’s old? Don’t tell me you’d respect a whoring 40+ year old woman on a typical Maury “You are NOT the father!” episode as much as your matriarch. Whatever happened to equality? I love women, but come on…

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

The point of my post went right over your head…..
I was trying to make an analogy that this isn’t high school anymore, hanging out with the guys, doing stupid things b/c, hey, you’re a teenage kid. My point was you’re an adult now, a man. Time to act like one.

        • DK says:

Yeah he shouldnt have called her sweetheart… honey would have been better.

        • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Sorry, it’s hard to read your points through text that isn’t self-evident. You were asking me questions, so I figured there was room for rebuttal.

You’re right, and all I’m saying is that you have to realize that he just left ASU (gorgeous women, by the way) and it will probably take some time for him to adjust. Hell, I’m at the peak of my college years, surrounded by thousands of beautiful women at UGA (don’t even think about bringing up last night!) and I don’t want to grow up either!

As Harry Dunne would say, “Blame me…”

        • TobeRinkler says:

“he just left ASU (gorgeous women, by the way)”

All women are gorgeous. Some are more gorgeous that others, however.

      • DK says:

I think you 4got what its like to be 20 … decades

If wright called her sweetheart they would be hanging out at his pad right now…

  25. wesdp1988 says:

Im turnin 20 this week, and although I don’t think whistling at a reporter would be something that I would do, I don’t necessarily think it’s a awful thing that happened. She, the apparent feminist who shouldn’t be “shaken” by something like this, was in the MENS clubhouse. Next time send a man to do her job. It’s not the players responsibility to not be themselves in the clubhouse. It’s that type of uptight nature that creates rifts between reporters and players. The players are doing the reporter a service, so the reporter(if female) shouldn’t get so bent out of shape. She should have just taken care of it herself, and told him that she was upset about it and to treat her with more respect. But instead, she tattled to her boss who obviously is a perfect person and doesn’t remember being 20, and calls this kid out. Ike could do the favor by chippin into that 1.65 mill and actually buy tomorrows paper.

    • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Deep down inside, you know she loved it… ;-)

    • debmc says:

Good luck in the future with the women in your life. You and the poster underneath this post are certainly going to need it.

Unbelievable…. totally unbelievable. I guess things haven’t really changed all that much, have they? How dare a woman invade a man’s inner sanctum? Woooooooooo gimme a break. And frankly, any man who would behave in the manner Ike supposedly did to a woman in any circumstance deserves to be slapped.

      • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Oh, calm down… If you’re referring to me, I was joking. Chalk this up there with every other overly sensitive comment out there these days.

        • TobeRinkler says:

Your use of the word “chalk” infringes on the rights of the World Chalk Federation.

Now that’s an overly sensitive comment. You weren’t joking, you were stirring the pot.

      • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Also… Your “Little Pussies List?” Kind of demeaning/emasculating towards men, no? Just saying…

        • debmc says:

Unlike this reporter, who actually did little more than walk into the clubhouse asking for an interview, the folks on the Little Pussies List have actually done something to merit their inclusion. It’s not as if any one of them simply walked up and was called a “little pussy” for simply approaching.

        • beltran the warrior says:

so the next time a woman at work calls me “darlin”, it’s okay for me to call hr to get her fired then.

you’re going way off the deep end, deb.

If I’m going off the deep end, then some are simply not taking this issue seriously enough.

I agree that because the reporter was a woman, and the term “sweetheart” was used, this became a story. Of course, it would be even a BIGGER story if the the reporter was a man, and the term “sweetheart” was used, but I digress…lol. The whole point that I’m trying to convey is that there is no reason for anyone to disrespect another because of the person’s gender, period. If the story is true as reported, then it is troubling to me to see this type of behavior out of a young man who’s not mature or intelligent enough to recognize his good fortune and be thankful for it; instead, he acts like a spoiled, disrespectful punk. Sure, in the scheme of things, it’s minor, but it’s bothersome and disappointing, all the same. :)

        • DK says:

          ez honey

      • dykstraw II says:

um, he called her “sweetheart,” he didn’t grab her ass. i don’t see anything wrong with it and i think the reporter needs to grow a thicker skin or stick to the WNBA.

and my love life is awesome. thanks.

    • zen says:

spoken like someone who never gets laid.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I don’t think the whistling was the issue.
It’s the ‘I can’t be bothered giving you an interview today, SWEETHEART’ attitude that was just poor. Who, exactly, does this kid think he is? And even if he already proved he is a megastar – that’s still no excuse for poor behavior.

This ‘kid’ is an adult now – on his way to a career in the ML. Long past time to grow the hell up. I don’t get anyone excusing this behavior. You don’t get a free pass just b/c you’re 20.

  26. mr.gee21 says:

They should be professional — they are a team in New York City, of all places.

That being said, wow I am amused by the posts that show up on an off day…

  27. Thee Bruce Dickenson says:

    She needs to relax!

  28. shawon_dunston says:

You’re not going to believe this, but I’ve heard some baseball players use cuss words! And some baseball players aren’t super-nice people. It’s true! I can’t believe it!

No doubt, it’s a little troubling that this type of behavior is going on in the minor leagues, but if this reporter ever wants to be taken seriously, she needs to fight her own battles, and not have her editor make demands on her behalf. Which, quite frankly, is just as patronizing as calling her “sweetheart.”

    Nothing to see here…..

    • mr.gee21 says:

Baseball players cuss? That is awful. I am moving to a good clean sport, like basketball.

    • theperfectgame says:

They were also at work when this happened. At most jobs, if this sort of thing happened, the people involved would be disciplined, if not fired. I suppose they have the right to act like idiots on their own time, but on the job, they need to be professional. No, this wasn’t the worst thing in the world. But it is embarrassing…

  29. gipper82475 says:

    *Yawn*

The team is floundering under .500, just had a managerial change, and the fanbase is angry with the GM….and THIS is what we are talking about? Locker room behavior in a….locker room? A story in a third-rate suburban “paper”? About our short-season single-A NY-Penn league affiliate?

    Geez.

How’s about a discussion on how to fix the team? You know, the major league team?

  30. CitizenSnips says:

Just watched the video. I like the kid, he’s cocky. Say what you will but arrogance can lead to good results sometimes.

    • garykeithron says:

cocky can be good. I think the ‘86 mets are in the dictionary under cocky

  31. Wright88 says:

btw…is sweetheart really so bad? I find it hard to believe someone working for the NY media would be insulted by that. The whistling and w/e may be insulting, but sweetheart? I guess it depends on his tone.

    • garykeithron says:

i think she should call him studmuffin next time she sees him. see how HE likes it

      • mr.gee21 says:

Haha. He’d be getting high-fives all day long. Just the way things work…

        • garykeithron says:

I know! Honestly, all she had to do was to return the favor (”yes, big daddy?”) and they’d both be laughing about it

    • TobeRinkler says:

Calling a woman “sweetheart” in a professional setting is misogynistic–it’s a slick way of trying to reduce the woman’s legitimacy to that of a high-school girl in the boys’ locker room. A professional organization, in today’s world, cannot afford to allow such behavior to continue if it is to remain relevant.

  32. The whole scene sounds like something lifted from a cheesy movie. Did the sassy female reporter then make some witty comment about Ike’s genitalia, inciting riotous laughter in the locker?

Are they going to fall in love? Coney Island date scene? This plot writes itself.

  33. metsfan119 says:

    eh, whatever

  34. patrick says:

Pretty sad, I am sure his mother is so proud.

In the meantime, in regads to the personality department and under current of cockiness to Davis displayed in an interveiw, GOOD!

He is schmuck for treating a reporter like a sandwich, but other than having the decency to respect someone and treat them as a professional, I am done with the family friendly Shea approach.

Cliches the likes of…”nice guys always finish last” do not develop out of thin air.

  35. MetsFan4Decades says:

BTW….after reading all these comments and making a couple myself, I noticed of all Matt’s posts today, this is like the 2nd or 3rd highest for comments.

I guess nothing rings bells for some of us like poor behavior in the world of baseball.

  36. metsfanatic says:

People should pay attention to this. The Mets just paid 1.5 Million bucks to this “kid”. This is someone who is the face of the Mets future and he’s already acting like an a-hole. This is why Lastings is no longer witht he team.

    • debmc says:

      Well said.

Look, believe it or not, I’m not overly sensitive, personally, to this type of stuff. I simply believe that it was in extremely poor taste for this kid, still wet behind the ears and moving up in the world, to display this type of behavior on his first real go-round with the New York press.

You are 100% right; this needs to watched, and it needs to be dealt with NOW.

What is dismaying is that apparently, old habits die hard, and it seems as if the younger generation of men hasn’t moved much past the stereotypes and misogynistic tendencies of the older generation of men. Which is a real shame, on so many levels, for both sexes.

      • K-Hern says:

Its hard to move past the old stereotypes when nearly every piece of today’s advertising (print, tv, etc.) lives by the motto “Sex Sells”

It is embedded in our culture and will be for the foreseable future

    • mymetsrock says:

      this is lame. who cares?

from the story i didn’t see him acting like an a**hole.

      lighten up people.

  37. NegativeFan says:

Eh, she had to endure Wolf whistles and a condescending player (”honey”)

If that leaves her “shaken” she’s not tough enough to be a reporter covering pee wee baseball let alone class A.

Not defending the players stupid behavior but on the list of outrages, this one ranks very very low.

I see worse behavior towards women (and men) on the subway every day.

    • garykeithron says:

now if they didn’t open the door to the clubhouse for her, THEN I’d be pissed…

      • dykstraw II says:

but even if they did, they’d only be doing it because she’s a woman, and that’s demeaning and inappropriate.

    • mackeysasser says:

Yeah, this hardly ranks with the “Patriot missile” incident from years ago.

  38. miker94 says:

kid sounds like a little punk. a little conceited there at the end huh?

  39. garykeithron says:

Hey, I wonder how she’d like interviewing Billy Wagner

  40. KFS says:

I guess there’s only one thing left to do for Ike: become the next Keith Hernandez. FREE PASSES FOR LIFE!

  41. MH says:

This kid has not yet taken the field nor had an at-bat in professional baseball and he chooses to blow off a reporter in this fashion. She was doing her job. If the players are going to try to sabotage her by refusing to cooperate with her or by being dismissive of her because she’s a woman, then she has every reason to tell her boss. That’s not crying to daddy or being thin-skinned; that’s doing what’s necessary to ensure it doesn’t happen again. That’s saying there will be repercussions…Hopefully the Mets will do just that—send a message to these adolescents that it’s part of their job to deal with reporters in the locker room—male and female—and to act like professionals.

  42. KFS says:

I have to wonder how she was dressed…

    • MH says:

I do not care how she was dressed. If she is female and is in the locker room, she is there in a professional capacity. Period.

      • KFS says:

But if she’s showing cleavage and wearing high heels…I’d make an exception.

Yea, I know the line, “just because you’re dressed like a high class hooker…”

      • KFS says:

And I’m sure there have been other women in the locker room in a “professional capacity” before:)

        • Sounds like kind of a pompous jerk to me, not blaming him or anything (Dude just got a million some dollars). Does need to grow up a bit and be respectful.

I work as a female reporter for my college radio station and I cover sports, esp. the Philadelphia Soul (which is an Arena Football team..don’t know AFL, get into it, its on ESPN!) Anyway, the guys are always really respectful to me, I don’t have any problems with that when I interview players.

You guys are quick to defend Ike, but he does need to grow up a bit. lol.

        • KFS says:

I’m not defending him per se. It’s just the all of this is based on the words of one person who did not get the interview she wanted. We know how the media get back at people in this town. Even her boss have to qualify it by saying “According to Mira, and I totally believe her…”

Until I get confirmation or refutation, I’m not believing this.

        • dykstraw II says:

the matter should have been handled privately and dismissed. the reporter here looks worse for being overly sensitive.

        • beltran the warrior says:

seriously. tina, you’re awfully quick to jump on ike considering we haven’t heard his side yet. this can go both ways.

how do we know if she simply asked him for an interview? what was ike doing at that exact moment? i’m not going to take one person’s side and simply crucify the other party because it’s politically correct to do so.

not to mention, who cares about arena league football? they need the publicity, for chrissakes!

        • Crooked Numbers says:

KFS, he did give her the interview. His initial response was to tell her he wasn’t playing “sweetheart”. Then she told him she wanted to interview him anyway and he gave it to her. It said other players were doing cat calls – not Ike.

This whole thing is over the word “sweetheart”. Maybe he was being a smartass, but this blog piece sounds like the reaction of a guy who is, or wants to be her bf.

BTW, the blog has been removed. Probably because its baseless nonsense.

        • KFS says:

Yea, I didn’t read it for obvious reason. In that case, perhaps Ike should’ve use “honey” instead.

  43. Tully says:

I wonder what the reaction would be if this was Milledge doing this.

  44. Mr. Bananagrabber says:

Maybe I’m missing it, but it looks like the blog was taken down…

  45. ness589 says:

Call me sexist, I don’t care. Another thing to add though is women do not belong in the clubhouse of a men’s team. Would women want a male reporter in their clubhouse?

  46. MH says:

    @ness589

As a matter of fact women deal with having male reporters around their locker rooms all the time. Are you unaware of women in sports? There is a period of time during which the press is kept out so the players can shower and dress (male or female athletes). After that the locker room is opened up to the press. Are you saying women should not be allowed to cover male sports teams? I guess so…Well you have a soul mate in the Mets 1st draft pick apparently….

  47. repeal the DH says:

let’s see! a woman walks into a men’s dressing room and the men in the room behave like most normal men would. what’s the problem exactly? i know i’m going to be reviled as a sexist but i don’t really care. i for one am tired of women in today’s day and age intruding in a man’s domain, in this case a sports locker room, and then claim to be shocked when men act like men in the presence of a woman. not saying woman shouldn’t cover sports but they should know what to expect and shouldn’t be shocked or “shaken” when they enter a man’s world and something like this happens. maybe ms. wassef would be more comfortable covering the ny liberty instead.

    • TobeRinkler says:

DH: Where’s your time machine, & does it go backward as well as forward? I’d really like to visit the caves you dwell in & see who painted all those cool pics about hunting the mastodon.

  48. TobeRinkler says:

“Boy,” Matt? Once you’re old enough to be put to death for your worst crimes, you’re a “man,” not a “boy.” No apologists, please.

  49. petercast41 says:

I hope that reporter is alright….poor thing.

  50. Ryn05 says:

That post was wrong on so many levels.

  51. dave27 says:

    What’s “mingy” mean?

  52. fatsfox says:

It’s Michel Inoa. A 16 year old you can’t even name correctly absolutely must be signed? That is laughable.

  53. Mets Fan says:

Why, because it’s absolutely true and heartfelt? That’s how it is. I don’t like it one bit, but it’s true. Every last word.

    K ~

  54. dykstraw II says:

at my office, i don’t shower and walk around in a towel. the comparison is absurd.

  55. Tina says:

You might have a point if she’d been the one catcalling a guy in a towel. She was trying to do her job. People are under-clothed in medical environments, etc. It is not absurd to expect people in their workplaces to behave professionally and respectfully, and with the awareness that their behavior reflects on their employer.

  56. mymetsrock says:

i don’t think women belong in the clubhouse, it will only cause problems, case in point.

maybe mira should stick with stories about rainbows and kitty cats.

  57. dykstraw II says:

yes, tina, and i agree the whistling and catcalling is inappropriate. but being offended by “sweetheart” without knowing a) context and b) his side of the story is ridiculous. if someone is that thin skinned she should choose a different career path.

  58. DK says:

You prob would score points women love to be called thin… lol
