postGame: Yankees 9 Mets 0

by Matthew Cerrone on June 27th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

The Mets (39–40) lost to the Yankees (43–37) by the score of 9 to 0 in Shea Stadium tonight.

For a complete recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

However, in case you missed it, know that the Mets left the bases loaded twice in the first three innings, without ever scoring a run; after that, they essentially shut down at the plate; meanwhile, Pedro Martinez was not very sharp, allowing six runs and 12 base runners in just over five innings pitched.

Man, baseball is complicated.  I mean, seven hours ago the Mets looked like an offensive super-power, scoring 15 runs in one game; yet, just a few hours later, on the very same day, with much of the same players in the lineup, they end up making Sidney Ponson look like Sandy Koufax.  Unreal.

By the way, once again, faced with the chance to move beyond a .500 record, the Mets lose and remain under .500.  Ugh.

All that said, it was a pleasure to watch Pedro Martinez face Alex Rodriguez.  One of my favorite moments in baseball is taking in these sort of historic match ups.  Tonight, Martinez got Rodriguez to pop out, which was followed by a walk in his second at bat.  However, Martinez got Rodriguez to swing and miss for a strike out in his third at bat on a soft, ‘floaty,’ looping curve ball, which Rodriguez was way out in front of.  Good stuff.

The Mets continue their three-game series against the Yankees at Shea Stadium tomorrow, at 3:55 pm, with Johan Santana (8-5, 4.04 ERA) facing Andy Pettitte (8-5, 4.04 ERA).

Stat: Hi, Delgado and Castillo

by Matthew Cerrone on June 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Earlier today I pointed out that Carlos Delgado had been the second least-productive starting first baseman in the National League, while also noting that only two starting second baseman have fewer hits than Luis Castillo.

What’s worse, during my pre-game segment on SNY, I mentioned how underwhelming Delgado has been.

Naturally, during today’s win against the Yankees, Delgado hit two home runs with a team-record nine RBI, while Castillo reached base five times while scoring two runs and stealing two bases.

excellent…hey, remind me to rip these two guys before every game…jeez…excuse me while i go wipe the egg from my face…

postGame: Mets 15 Yankees 6

by Mike Nichols on June 27th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

The Mets (39-39) defeated the Yankees (42-37) by a score of 15 to 6 today in Yankee Stadium.

For a complete recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

However, in case you missed it, know that:

  • Carlos Delgado was an absolute moster today, going 3-for-5 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. And, no that is not a typo, Carlos Delgado really did drive in nine runs today.
  • David Wright continued his hot hitting since getting the day off on Tuesday, going 4-for-5 with 3 RBI.
  • Carlos Beltran also drove in three runs.
  • Mike Pelfrey was moderately effective today in his five innings of work, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out five.
  • Aaron Heilman continues to pitch well with another scoreless inning of work and now has only one one run over his last 13.0 IP.

Great start to an important 12 game stretch for the Mets.

The Mets look to sweep their doubleheader versus the Yankees tonight, with Pedro Martinez taking the hill, game time 8:10 pm.

Buzz: NL East, Oliver, and Jerry

by Regis Courtemanche on June 27th, 2008 at 1:17 pm

In his latest Rumblings & Grumblings column for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark notes that the Mets ‘might’ shop Oliver Perez, writing; “An official of one team who spoke with the Mets’ brass this week reports the Mets are so fed up with Perez’s inconsistency, they’re about ready to listen to offers for him.”

…not that i’m totally on board with this, but if the Mets are willing to lose perez to free agency after this season, perhaps it better serves their interests to deal him before he further damages his trade value rather than just lose him later on…

Stark also pens that the Braves are looking for a bat in the outfield and suggests Raul Ibanez, Jason Bay or Xavier Nady.

...the buzz from new york suggests the Mets are looking at the same caliber outfielders

According to Stark, the Phillies are reportedly interested in Erik Bedard as well.

Lastly, Tony Pena may be on the list of potential replacements for Jerry Manuel after this season, if he is indeed replaced.

Read: Remembering Teammate Squabbles

by Regis Courtemanche on June 27th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

In a post for his blog at Yahoo!, ‘Duk remembers classic teammate fights and relives the disdain held between Keith Hernandez and Darryl Strawberry, more specifically when they fought at ‘photo day’ in 1989.

‘Duk also relays a must read excerpt from Bob Klapisch and John Harper’s book, “The Worst Team Money Could Buy: The Collapse of the New York Mets”.

…ah, the good ol’ days…this is the ‘fight’ that the current team lacks, for better or worse…

Stat: Lack of Production

by Matthew Cerrone on June 27th, 2008 at 11:36 am

In terms of OPS, Carlos Delgado is the second least-productive starting first baseman in the National League.

…i know, you must be shocked

what’s more, if you remove the only hot week delgado had this season, which was the first week of the season by the way, he’s batting .219 with a .295 OBP…

In his last 623 at bats, spanning six months of baseball, Delgado is batting .254.

Similarly, Luis Castillo is the fifth least-productive second baseman, checking in behind nine others, including Mark DeRosa and Kaz Matsui.

Only Rickie Weeks has fewer hits than Castillo among starting second baseman, while only Adam la Roche and Todd Helton have driven in fewer runs than Delgado at first.

Meanwhile, Damion Easley, Marlon Anderson, Endy Chavez, Trot Nixon, Fernando Tatis, Moises Alou and Angel Pagan have all played left field for the Mets this season.

Together, making one left fielder, they have hit .184 with two home runs and 30 RBI, good for worst in the National League.

…umm, repeat that, .184…one…eighty…fourjeeez

Note: Essential Games of Shea Stadium

by Matthew Cerrone on June 27th, 2008 at 11:09 am

This weekend on SNY’s Mets Weekly, the show looks back at the five best moments in Subway Series history, including Roger Clemens facing Shawn Estes, Mr. Koo’s wild ride and David Wright‘s walk off hit.

Speaking of ‘great moments,’ A&E Home Video recently released The New York Mets: Essential Games of Shea Stadium, which you can purchase here.

The six-DVD set includes the complete-game broadcasts, commentary and bonus features from what A&E believes are the most historic games in Mets history, including Game 4 of the 1969 World Series, Game 3 of the 1986 NLCS, Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, Game 5 of the 1999 NLCS, Piazza’s HR on Sept. 21, 2001 against the Braves, and David Wright’s walk-off hit against the Yankees in 2006.

personally, i agree with all of these, except the wright walk-off, from the Subway Series, which was a regular season game by the way

that said, my favorite game is Robin Ventura’s walk-off single, but mostly because i was in the building that night…otherwise, it would be Bill Buckner, which i watched from my sofa on a school night while my mom told me the Mets had no chance of winning
