News: Ike Davis Debut, J-Rod Exposed

by Matthew Cerrone

Ike Davis made his professional debut last night with the Brooklyn Cyclones, going 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored while playing in the outfield.

For more on the game, check out Toby Hyde’s recap at Mets Minor League Blog.

Yesterday, I wasted every one’s time blogging about Juan ‘J-Rod’ Rodriguez and his post about Davis to his blog for the Times Herald-Record.

According to Rodriguez, Davis and some of his teammates disrespected a female reporter, who requested an interview for a report she was writing, using ‘cat calls.’

However, according to Hyde, in a separate post on the subject at Mets Minor League Blog, citing a Cyclones rep, the ‘cat calls’ were made by Davis’s teammates towards Davis, adding:

“This might sound hard to believe, but it’s possible.  I’ve seen this exact routine in minor league clubhouse.  When a reporter ignores everyone else and goes straight for the big-name guy, his teammates will start chirping.”

Additionally, as Mark Healey points out in column for Gotham Baseball Magazine, Rodriguez has altered and updated his original blog post on several occasions today.

In his column, which is a must read, Healey writes:

“I called the paper to find out how it was possible for that story to have been published when ‘J-Rod’ said that Davis refused to talk to her.  The person who I spoke with said “Huh?”, and then put me on hold for 10 minutes.  Then, like magic, a paragraph in J-Rod’s blog stated, ‘David finally agreed to sit down with her to do the interview.’  Only it wasn’t a new entry, it now appears in J-Rod’s ‘original’ blog (that doesn’t have any edited stamps on it by the way).  Oh, and later in the blog, when he states ‘Ike Davis needs to act like a man, not a punk,’ the word ‘punk’ no longer appears, but the awkward edit where he removed it remains.”

In fact, Ed Ryan was wise enough to copy and paste Rodriguez+’s original, yet-to-edited post at Mets Fever.

nice work by heals, toby and ed…thanks, guys

what a clown

metsfanatic June 27, 2008 at 7:46 am

Guy’s a jerk. Some “professional.”

theperfectgame June 27, 2008 at 8:13 am

Well, that’s actually quite a relief. I wonder if this J-Rod guy has a thing for Reese Havens, though…

raylyman78 June 27, 2008 at 8:21 am

Is it me or is the media absolutely horrible anymore. Whatever happened to journalism 101 where you get 3 sources before publishing a story. I bet this guy feels like an idiot. He probably just has got it for that woman he wrote about.

Bob Knight was right when he said the media is one step above prostitution.

Personally I would never believe anything from a guy who calls himself J-Rod

BIG17EASY June 27, 2008 at 8:34 am

You’re right about journalism 101, but if you wait for three sources, seven other people with blogs will have the story out there before you do, so you lose that “exclusive” story. I don’t agree with this (I work in journalism), but that’s the way it’s become with the Internet. The news cycle is no longer dictated by what time the newspapers hit the streets. It’s a 24/7 cycle and when a reporter gets what he/she thinks is a scoop, they’re going to run with it most times before verifying it with another source.

Just look at the Kirk Herbstreit fiasco with the Michigan job last year. He thought he had a reliable source, so he went on TV so he could beat the Internet people and he ended up looking like a complete fool.

JNGordon June 27, 2008 at 10:10 am

You can not, and should not expect journalistic ethics on a blog. When you get good journalistic quality on a blog, it is a bonus. For goodness sake, you often get poor journalism in mainstream media….Dan Rather, NY Times, NY Post, Fox News, need I say more?

mr.gee21 June 27, 2008 at 8:32 am

So much more important was that Church went 3 for 3 and could recite the alphabet after the game.

BIG17EASY June 27, 2008 at 8:36 am

Even more important that he played right field, since the Mets said he would likely DH and won’t return until he plays the outfield. Hopefully this means we’ll see him today or tomorrow.

Joseisbetter June 27, 2008 at 8:39 am

People care about this stuff?

Adam_Jones June 27, 2008 at 8:44 am

No. Why Matt posted this story again this morning, instead of providing the 3-3 Ryan Church update is beyond me.

Tina June 27, 2008 at 9:41 am

Why he posted a correction to something that affects someone’s reputation is beyond you?

gameball June 27, 2008 at 10:13 am

At least he admits it’s “beyond him”

ravi3 June 27, 2008 at 8:51 am

Not to be the resident optimist or anything (god knows we hate those people) but the Mets have a chance to pull within 1.5 games of first place today!

Of course instead of hearing about that, we are flooded with fake news stories from people with absolutely no comprehension, or integrity.

jamie June 27, 2008 at 9:01 am

last night I checked at 3 am and saw the phils lost…I hate hate hate getting my expectations up again, but that’s all I could think about this morning, too (ie: could be 1.5). Texas and philly going at it…23 runs a game.

jamie June 27, 2008 at 9:10 am

*”meaning”, not “ie”

mrose June 27, 2008 at 8:55 am

I am so happy this tool got outted for trying to draw attention to himself/his paper …you now look worse for what you have done and you deserve that.

Mr. Bananagrabber June 27, 2008 at 8:55 am

I wonder if J-Rod is familiar with the word “libel.” Perhaps not.

His blog today isn’t any sort of an apology on his part for reporting the story incorrectly. It’s just more of the same.

metsfan119 June 27, 2008 at 8:57 am

Just one more example of why I’m skeptical of anything reported by the media.

gameball June 27, 2008 at 10:21 am

Note that as it usually does, the truth came out.

“The media” is not one big animal. You have to consider your sources and use your critical judgment.

roman411 June 27, 2008 at 9:02 am

I would greatly like to thank you guys for doing your homework. There are fewer things I dislike less than irresponsible journalism (something the staff at this blog do NOT do). We all manipulate words and interpret things for our own good at times. This was well beyond what is ethically acceptable.

Adam_Jones June 27, 2008 at 9:09 am

J. Rod > J. Roll

Joe D June 27, 2008 at 9:10 am

how long are we gonna milk this story…

ghobot June 27, 2008 at 9:19 am

i dont get why people complain about met news. this is news. i care about this stuff too. if it was true i would have hoped thee was an apology. but now that it isnt true, i am glad people like metsblog are around to makethe truth be known.

dykstraw II June 27, 2008 at 9:20 am

seriously the real story here is that a freaking reporter calls himself j-rod

what a toolbox

beltran the warrior June 27, 2008 at 9:33 am

looks like debmc and tina owe someone an apology.

this j-rod dope also needs to give an apology. talk about irresponsible journalism! the guy is there for one day and is already caught up in a mess that he had nothing to do with.

debmc June 27, 2008 at 9:42 am

I’m sorry for thinking the story was true. That’s what I’m sorry for. I will treat these types of things with a more skeptical eye the next time.

I made the remarks I made based upon the above assumption. For that, I’m sorry.

JDuelz (Athens, GA) June 27, 2008 at 11:38 am

Thank you.

Tina June 27, 2008 at 9:46 am

I don’t think so. My biggest objection was to the tools on this site who were using the story as justification for keeping female reporters from being able to fully do their jobs. The commenting yesterday had to do with behavior and whether or not it was justifiable, not whether or not Ike Davis is a horrible person.

mymetsrock June 27, 2008 at 10:08 am

from ike’s comments how does the phrase “horrible person” even enter the conversation.

are women going insane?

i’m female, and i could not believe the reactions from this silly story.

Tina June 27, 2008 at 10:26 am

Obviously, I don’t think Ike Davis is a horrible person, it was hyperbole, and my point was that the conversation became about something larger than who he is as a person.

JDuelz (Athens, GA) June 27, 2008 at 11:41 am

Thank you, mymetsrock! A sane individual who doesn’t get overly sensitive over some stupid BS.

StrawberryCoke June 27, 2008 at 9:43 am

Welcome to the Show Ike . It could be a good learning experience for the Guy . Sooner he learns to not pay attention to the clowns the better off

garykeithron June 27, 2008 at 9:51 am

looks like jrod was embarrassed into finally printing a retraction.

Seaver41 June 27, 2008 at 10:05 am

So why hasn’t the most important person in this story besides Davis, the female reporter, being asked about what really happened?

TheBigStapler June 27, 2008 at 10:45 am

Blogs are not obligated to do research nor are they obligated to refrain from strong language.

However, it’s deplorable that he surreptiously edits the original post instead of timestamping corrections.

beltran the warrior June 27, 2008 at 11:07 am

yup. i caught that too.

BUSTED.

JDuelz (Athens, GA) June 27, 2008 at 11:47 am

Of course this guy doesn’t have a comments section on his blog. No apology or correction on his follow-up on their behalf either? What a tool.

TobeRinkler June 27, 2008 at 4:34 pm

raylyman78: “Personally I would never believe anything from a guy who calls himself J-Rod.”

I agree with this sentiment. But re your other remarks on journalism: are blogs really “journalism” as we’ve come to know & love it? They are by nature impromptu & riddled with errors of all sorts, it seems–for example: the young writer who has such an ego he calls himself “J-Rod” but is so worried what folks think of him that he cannot admit public error is really “Justin” Rodríguez, not “Juan” Rodríguez, as Matt writes. But do we “call him on the carpet” for substituting the most well-known Hispanic christian name on record for an Anglo name when that Anglo name is unexpectedly coupled with an Hispanic surname? Not me; I give him the benefit of the doubt.
