Poll: Who Would You Rather Play?

by Matthew Cerrone on June 27th, 2008 at 9:10 am

The Mets will play the American League Yankees today at 2 pm in Yankees Stadium, then will play the Yankees against at Shea Stadium tonight at 8 pm.

I am quite open and honest about my dislike of the ‘Subway Series.’  That said, when the game begins, I feel the juice and excitement and it is hard to deny the entertainment.

The problem for me is that, as a Mets fan, who really only concerns himself with the National League, I would much rather see the Mets play the Phillies, or Braves, etc., than some inconsequential team from the American League, who just happen to play a few miles from Shea Stadium.

Right now, given the current situation in the NL East standings, I just feel like the Mets have bigger fish to fry than the Yankees, who, by the way, have their own issues to contend with.

So, if the Great Gazoo could guarantee the Mets will win the next four games they play, who would you prefer they be against? [Poll=128]

News: Church One Step Closer

by Matthew Cerrone on June 27th, 2008 at 8:41 am

Mets OF Ryan Church played five innings and went 3 for 3 with a double Thursday in a rehab assignment with Single-A Brooklyn.

Church started in right field, but did not have a ball hit to him.

As he expected, Church experienced mild leg soreness following the game, and is scheduled to play for Brooklyn again tonight.

my hunch is that we’ll see church back with the Mets tomorrow, but that is totally a hunch, and hope

Church, talking to reporters about his style of play, following the game, said:

“I’m going to continue to go all out.  I mean, that’s what got me here…I’m not gonna change a thing.  I’ll probably just be a little smarter, you know, with the slides around the bag and stuff like that, crashing in to walls, but other than than I’m not gonna let down at all because that’s just not me.”

News: Ike Davis Debut, J-Rod Exposed

by Matthew Cerrone on June 27th, 2008 at 7:33 am

Ike Davis made his professional debut last night with the Brooklyn Cyclones, going 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored while playing in the outfield.

For more on the game, check out Toby Hyde’s recap at Mets Minor League Blog.

Yesterday, I wasted every one’s time blogging about Juan ‘J-Rod’ Rodriguez and his post about Davis to his blog for the Times Herald-Record.

According to Rodriguez, Davis and some of his teammates disrespected a female reporter, who requested an interview for a report she was writing, using ‘cat calls.’

However, according to Hyde, in a separate post on the subject at Mets Minor League Blog, citing a Cyclones rep, the ‘cat calls’ were made by Davis’s teammates towards Davis, adding:

“This might sound hard to believe, but it’s possible.  I’ve seen this exact routine in minor league clubhouse.  When a reporter ignores everyone else and goes straight for the big-name guy, his teammates will start chirping.”

Additionally, as Mark Healey points out in column for Gotham Baseball Magazine, Rodriguez has altered and updated his original blog post on several occasions today.

In his column, which is a must read, Healey writes:

“I called the paper to find out how it was possible for that story to have been published when ‘J-Rod’ said that Davis refused to talk to her.  The person who I spoke with said “Huh?”, and then put me on hold for 10 minutes.  Then, like magic, a paragraph in J-Rod’s blog stated, ‘David finally agreed to sit down with her to do the interview.’  Only it wasn’t a new entry, it now appears in J-Rod’s ‘original’ blog (that doesn’t have any edited stamps on it by the way).  Oh, and later in the blog, when he states ‘Ike Davis needs to act like a man, not a punk,’ the word ‘punk’ no longer appears, but the awkward edit where he removed it remains.”

In fact, Ed Ryan was wise enough to copy and paste Rodriguez+’s original, yet-to-edited post at Mets Fever.

nice work by heals, toby and ed…thanks, guys
