By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 28, 2008 3:30 pm

Ryan Church is at Shea Stadium, but will not be activated.

Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Church will likely be activated tomorrow.

Also, Manuel said that Moises Alou could return to the team next weekend in Philadelphia.

Let’s say Phillips is hitting well when Alou comes back, who do we get rid of to make room for him?

  2. metsfan1 says:

Stop the madness. Do we honestly think he will be activated and if he is, what is the over/under on the number of games before he is returned to the DL?

If you’re referring to Church, I think he may actually stick this time.

If you mean Alou, the over/under should be on the number of at bats, not game.

And I think the over/under should be set at 4.

  3. GregB says:

Matt, you didn’t say it this time, so I’ll do it for you.

“Moises Alou could return to the team next weekend”

Who? I’ll believe it when I see it.

Why not activate Church today? I know they didn’t want to start him, but he still might pinch hit. The Yankees have no lefties in the pen to counter him. I’d rather have Church pinch hit for Phillips or Tatis in a big spot than Nixon.

It’d be one thing if he was playing in Brooklyn today, but if he’s just going to be watching the game, he might as well watch while being on the roster.

With Pettitte pitching and no off days on the horizon, he might as well get today off instead of Monday or Tuesday.

      • gottabelieve07 says:

        Days off?

The guy hasn’t played a major league game since June 5th. I doubt he would have wore himself out too much sitting on the bench in uniform today, with maybe 1 pinch hit at bat.

        • ridethesnake says:

Who knows, I guess it gives them another day to make sure with something they rushed last time, and allows them to give Phillips a start today against his old team before he gets sent down.

        • ridethesnake says:

And yes, after feeling soreness yesterday I am assuming that he would benefit from not suiting up, stretching and doing pre-game drills and taking BP until tomorrow.

    Alou…

Now this is the guy that Manuel said he has to play the year without, now he has him coming back next weekend.

I sure hope this is some planned PR smokescreen to help the Mets in a trade in the next 48 hours.

    Alou…good grief.

    • ridethesnake says:

I prefer that somehow it’s true. Even if he is only in the lineup a week, he hits 350 and they win more when he is around. I guess people are worried that eventually the inevitable injury becomes another feeling of loss. Maybe. I guess as long as they prepare mentally that the joy he brings will be gone soon. He’s like Santa Claus, but older.

      Agreed.

  6. Jmiles says:

I had heard the plan was to activate Alou next weekend then put him back on the disabled list by the following weekend.

  7. stickguy says:

If he does come back (Alou that is) they should make this his last chance. Either stay on the field, playing regularly, or cut him and avoid the silliness with the next rehab.

If after this much time he can’t stay healthy enough to play for 2 months, that is a sure sign to retire.

But, if by some miracle he does come back, and plays for a while, having hurch and ALou in the line up in Philly will go a long way to equalizing the teams, and should give the mets a much better chance in that series.

  8. whenslydale says:

Alou will be activated but soon after meet with a season ending cotton-ball accident.

    Sign Bonds!

which outfield do you think works better,
    Bonds, Beltran, Chruch
    or
    Phillips, Beltran- Trotsky?

  9. grmetsfan says:

Phillips is horrible. I wish we had a good farm system…

  10. ness589 says:

Let’s wait for Alou to play a complete game before we make a big deal over his return.

  11. metaje says:

can everybody just can it already with the negative alou stuff….you think he wants to be injured? he has more heart than anyone on this team…

  12. chew13 says:

I’m sick of it! Get me a real everyday corner outfield. I’m tired of this platoon of bums and has-beens. Tatis, nixon, phillips… please! Our lineup 5-9 sucks. Where is angel pagan!?! For what was supposed to be not that serious has been a really long time.

  13. teufelshuffle86 says:

The Mets should decide which one game we really need Alou to play in so that when he reinjures himself in the 7th inning of that game they’ll be prepared.
