Video: NYP’s Sunday Q&A with Jerry Manuel
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 29, 2008 8:54 am

In today’s Sunday Q&A for the New York Post, Steve Serby talks with OG Jerry Manuel about a variety of topics, from his favorite movie to why he loves managing in New York to his respect for Gandhi to his shouting match with Frank Thomas to why today’s players trust him.

Manuel, as quoted by Serby, when asked if he has a message for Mets fans, said:

“Keep being yourself…keep being what you’ve been all these years…and keep pushing us, keep pushing us.  When we don’t perform let us know.”

I’ll say this for Manuel, he knows how to politic the fans.

    • JefJarrett says:

Exactly…and for that Manuel will get a longer leash than Willie did. Willie was stubborn and defiant….and that angered people. So thus far, in albeit a short sample, Manuel has changed stuff around, argued calls, gotten tossed from the game, instilled discipline in his players…..and the team (assuming a win today) is still playing .500 ball.

The fact remains it is a poorly constructed team by Omar.

      • patrick says:

well, you missed my point entirely, he OBVIOUSLY felt he would change things when taking over, he is as blind as Willie was stubborn

      • Ceetar says:

Of course he’s doing things different, he’s not the same person. However, he’s certainly made plenty of wrong moves of his own, so for he’s certainly not a better manager than Willie and seems worse.

However, it’s obvious he was part of the problem and should’ve been fired too.

      • cver says:

I’m not sure he’s instilled so much discipline in his players. I’ll give an example. The other day I saw Marlon Anderson slowly trotting to first base, when he hit an infield grounder. Instilling discipline would have been to make an issue of it in some manner, since the infielder could have dropped that ball. Anderson is a part time player and particularly has to hustle whenever he is out there, as do the ones that have played 75-80 games so far. Jerry seems like a very nice guy and if he can figure out a way to get the most out of these Mets with honey rather than vinegar, that’s great. But he should not tolerate for a moment lax play.

      • cver says:

And incidentally, I just noticed that it’s you, Mr. Jarrett. How have you been? We’ve missed you over there in the Bleachers – I mentioned that in there the other day!

  2. cver says:

Sounds like Manuel wants the Mets to adopt this new slogan:

    KEEP BOOING US!

  3. mistermet says:

Get Bobby V in here- enough is enough already. I like Manuel but he’s not the answer.

  4. markcore says:

I love Jerry Manuel .. Every time he talks I grow fonder of him as the manager of the Mets and as a person. I want the Mets to keep him around.

    • NegativeFan says:

      NO.

Time to go in an entirely new direction

      • markcore says:

The manager isn’t the problem, it is the players. Manuel is already doing things his own way. Lineups are different, he has the b*lls to sit big name players. The players need to learn to adjust to the pitchers as the game goes on.

  5. upstatemet says:

He’s a great politician but the jury’s still out on manager

  6. metsgo says:

A politician is what he is exactly
from years of sitting on the bench he knows what to say and what not to say and he knows just how to woo the fans in how he is a different person than willie but hes the same kind if manager
If he wasnt he would have made some obvious changes
in the line up with this weak offence
managers dont win games the players do but this guy isnt doing what should be done dont be fooled by his personality he wants the fans to like him
when the mets lose today the papers will bash him for being no different and if this upcomming week is not a sucess he will be singing a different song about the fans The problem here is its obvious that it is not the managers fault its the selection of players

  7. metschamps says:

Actually, I have watched him in post-game interviews and he does always say what we want to hear but so far he has not followed through.

Yesterday he said he and his staff obviously need to get together and evaluate the roster regrarding the offense. He said the same thing the day after he took over for Willie ! Why has he not done that yet? This should have been done already.

I know he can’t do miracles with the consist of this team but so far I have seen only business as usual.

  8. metsgo says:

I believe today we might see something changed after the game in which he spoke about last week
I think when perez implodes today they will demote him to shake things up
the problem is he wont drop some of the dead weight from the line up or move them around

  9. AzMetsFan says:

There is only so much you can change around with the given lineup since it’s technically only half complete. We can’t switch it up by having Nixon, Tatis and easley be our 3,4,5 hitters. Once Church comes back and maybe if we can ever have an everyday leftfielder, then there will be room to strategically move parts around. My impression is that this crap team is falling directly on Omar.

  10. kendychavez says:

    serby looks like my grandmother

  11. The Glider says:

The only thing that will make things different around here is getting Alou and Church healthy and on the field day in and day out the rest of the season.

It has nothing to do with the friggin’ manager. Sheesh.
