The Mets have designated Andy Phillips for assignment, and will promote RHP Tony Armas Jr. from Triple-A New Orleans to start tomorrow’s game against the Cardinals.
The Mets (40–42) lost to the Cardinals (48–36) by the score of 7 to 1 in St. Louis tonight.
For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.
In case you missed it, know that John Maine was wild from the first pitch he threw, he let up a run in all four of the innings he pitched; the Mets made three errors, including two errant throws and a ball through the legs, which Maine did not look happy about; and the only run the Mets scored can be credited to the bat and legs of Andy Phillips, who will soon be designated for assignment to make room for tomorrow’s starting pitcher.
…here’s the thing, i’m fairly certain that if the Mets intend to make the playoffs, eventually, they’re going to need to get over .500, which has proven to be a ceiling for this team over and over and over again…
The Mets continue their four-game series with the Cardinals in St. Louis tomorrow at 8:15 pm, with Todd Wellemeyer (7-2, 3.46 ERA) taking on Tony Armas Jr., who will make his season debut.
By the way, SNY is holding a Viewing Party of the game at the Village Pourhouse, located at 64 3rd avenue in New York City.

Ed Price of the Star-Ledger reports free-agent RHP Freddy Garcia could be ready to throw for scouts later next month and hopes to sign with a club by July 31.
According to Price, the Mets and Yankees are keeping tabs on Garcia’s progress.
In May, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reported several teams, including the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Braves and White Sox, would likely send scouts to watch Garcia audition.
Garcia, who has not pitched since June 8 of last year, is 117-76 with a 4.07 ERA in his nine year career.

…carlin was an absolute comedic genius…r.i.p., mr. carlin…
…on a side note, i was never a fan of Ralph Kiner when i first starting watching Mets games…i know, that is sacrilege, but it was the truth, until i met the man at Mickey Mantle’s restaurant in 1989, when i was 11 years old…now, i love when he is in the both telling stories of the good ol’ days…
…hat tip to Neil Best’s Watchdog for the link…
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
…i, on the other hand, am a huge fan of carlin, and had no idea that he was a Mets fan…that only makes my memory of him now that much better…

Regarding the outfield, Heyman writes,
“Jason Bay and Xavier Nady should be highly coveted, and I can imagine the Mets calling every other day to try to bring back Nady, whom they dealt to the Bucs for Oliver Perez in 2006.”
In a recent report for the Post-Gazette, Dejan Kovacevic wrote that the Pirates are far more likely to trade Nady than Bay, assuming either become available.

I stopped him and asked if he spent
money on it prior to the trade, or after. Naturally, he ordered it online after the trade.
What’s interesting, though, is it was sent to him with a space between the Z and M in the last name.
Apparently, he said, the team will not ship out jerseys with No. 19 and the full last name of Kazmir on a Mets jersey.
…from what i can gather, this is their policy for any player who is not on the Mets, and has more to do with the league than the specific team…the thing is, i just can’t see how this is enforced…however, in a case like kazmir, which is so obvious, and such a notorious deal, it makes sense that it would be censored…
…i had never heard of such a scenario, and wonder if any other fans have gone through the same situation…

Village Pourhouse, located at 64 3rd avenue in New York City.
The game starts at 8:15 and will have Bud Girls, Ticket Giveaways and more.
…i am quite excited about this week’s worth of games…love playing the Cardinals, which is followed by a HUGE series against the Phillies…
…hopefully i’ll see you at the Pourhouse, if you go…
Yesterday, with two outs in the seventh inning, Melky Cabrera hit a routine ground ball to Jose Reyes, who threw the ball high toward first base, over Carlos Delgado and in to the dugout, allowing Cabrera to advance to second.
The next batter, Jose Molina, popped out to
center field, after which Reyes – still angry about his error – slammed his glove and sunglasses to the ground, while looking like a Little Leaguer.
…i’ve said it, and i keep hearing and reading the comment that states: reyes needs to grow up…he is too immature…etc…
…the thing is, if it is his immaturity that is leading to his struggles at the plate and in the field, then yes, he needs to grow up…if, however, he’s hitting, and playing well on defense, but still acting like a Little Leaguer, so what…
…if the Mets are winning, and he’s hitting and winning a Gold Glove, yet slammed his glove and glasses on the field, i’m willing to bet it would be portrayed as heart and passion, not immaturity…
…i’d like to see him act more professionally because he’s a professional, and because these sort of immature acts can reflect poorly on the team…however, i think it may be a little too preachy to pretend that one has anything to do with the other…it might, but it also might not…
…i mean, he was two years less mature than he is now when he won the starting job in the All-Star Game, so maybe he needs to be less mature…who knows…
Following the game, Reyes told reporters that his frustration was a culmination of a season’s worth of bad defense, saying he is capable of playing better, adding, “I don’t feel happy.”
By the way, Reyes is batting .328 in the 43 games since May 15, during which he has 20 extra base hits and a .383 OBP.
Prior to yesterday’s game, Jerry Manuel explained to reporters why he, from an out-of-town perspective, believes the Mets are a second-class citizen to the Yankees, saying:
We’re kind of like the second team…The Yankees have won 26, 27 championships. They’ve been here longer, I would think…That’s just the way it is. That’s just my opinion now. I don’t speak for everybody else. That’s my opinion. And being a baseball person all these years, from the outside, I’ve seen it that way. In Chicago, if you asked me, ‘What was the favorite team in New York?’ I would have to
say, ‘The Yankees.’ I don’t have a problem with that. I love playing them…Shoot, use that as motivation. If you want to be first, win. Win some world championships. Don’t be first just by popularity, or who wears what jersey. Win some championships and you can claim first. I don’t have a problem with that.”
…it’s sad, but true…i’m not happy about it, but he’s right…also, he’s right that if the Mets truly want to take the town back, they need to win…because, i think it’s quite clear that part of New York is a front-running town when it comes to baseball…
…i say that, because, to me, the two fanbases are probably split fairly even…it’s the middle ground, the undecided, fair-weather, front-runner fan who likely sways towards the championships and the cache of cheering for the favorite…and so, the team who is winning is the team with more ‘fans’…that happens to have been the Yankees over the last decade…for much of the 1980s, it was the Mets…and so on…and that’s all totally understable…
According to a poll by Quinnipiac University from last summer, which you can check out here, 52 percent of New York City baseball fans said they would back the Yankees over the Mets in a Subway Series, while only 44 percent said the Mets.
