Yesterday, while leaving Shea Stadium, I saw a guy wearing a Scott Kazmir Mets jersey.
I stopped him and asked if he spent
money on it prior to the trade, or after. Naturally, he ordered it online after the trade.
What’s interesting, though, is it was sent to him with a space between the Z and M in the last name.
Apparently, he said, the team will not ship out jerseys with No. 19 and the full last name of Kazmir on a Mets jersey.
…from what i can gather, this is their policy for any player who is not on the Mets, and has more to do with the league than the specific team…the thing is, i just can’t see how this is enforced…however, in a case like kazmir, which is so obvious, and such a notorious deal, it makes sense that it would be censored…
…i had never heard of such a scenario, and wonder if any other fans have gone through the same situation…

I do know that the censorship happens in sports other than baseball as the Falcons would not allow Ron Mexico no. 7 jerseys after Vick had used that fake name when getting a herpes tests.
Actually, if you try and order customizable All-Star jerseys, and set a player’s name and number, the order will be voided as well…My thinking for that is because the customizable jerseys are cheaper than the authentic/official ones. By a lot.
I can tell you that 3 years ago, this policy was not in place. I ordered a “Custom” jersey and was “smart” enough to get “Beltran #15″ on the back.
So I got an Authentic Carlos Beltran jersey for $225, which was the price for customizable jersey’s then (or there about) and the REAL Authentic ones were $250+.
I even called Customer Service and asked, specifically, “What’s to stop me from ordering a custom jersey with the player’s name?”
“Um, I guess nothing sir.”
So, blame me…sorry!!
So, if my name is Bob Kent, they wouldn’t sell me a Jeff Kent Mets jersey? Even though the Mets let a potential future HOF-second baseman go?
Obviously, I mean a “Kent” jersey.
“let a potential future HOF-second baseman go”???/
Really, i would love for someone to say, with a straight face, that they were honestly upset when jeff kent was traded…..it’s impossible, and if you say you were, you are a liar
I was disappointed to see Jeff Kent go, and I am not a liar. I thought the trade of Kent and Jose Vizcaino for Carlos Baerga and Alvaro Espinoza was a terrible deal for the Mets; Kent was my favorite player at the time. Sure, he was surly, but he hit with very impressive power for a middle infielder in those days. I didn’t know he’d go on to be an MVP, but I really liked what he gave the Mets even in those dark days.
Ok, jeff kent was your favorite player….
But middle infielder he was not yet….he was used all over the infield as a met…3B, 1B, and 2B. he was an Arod type player who never came through in the clutch for the team. I have nothing but bad memories about this guy and i’m what many doom&gloom fans here would call a “sunshine” fan…
I tried to order a Kieth Hernandez and a Roberto Clemente jersey and wasn’t allowed.
I learned this when I wanted to get a Floyd jersey through Mets.com. You have to wait until he either comes back to the Mets or retires and is off “the books”.
It’s a league thing. I don’t think you could get a Twins Santana jersey [with his number] through any truly official distributors either.
Correct…..I couldn’t order a Santana jersey when he was first acquired, because MLB didn’t have him listed as a NY Met yet……..they do prohibit you from getting a player with the same number in another team’s jersey. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure they would let you get a Kazmir with any number other than 19.
I think you can. I don’t think they’re that hardcore about it. They probably have a list of “red flags” etc.
Nice, I had bought a Floyd jersey in 2005 and it’s now in my mets media room / home theater in a nice wooden frame.
Slow news day, mAtt?
I was thinking the same thing. He should start making up stuff…
You mean like every other media outlet…nah, Metsblog has a reputation to uphold.
Can it say DelCrapo?
Boo-ya!
I’m buyin’ that jersey right now!
wow, you must have money to waste
Delgaydo, my preference.
DelGarbage
DelgaDon’t ?
The best way to get around this is to get the jersey and then go to a sports shop and have them put the name on it.
I had to do this with a Messier Jersey since I wanted a Canucks one a few years back.
How much revenue might it cost the Mets and MLB if FMart decides to take #45?
About the same as it’s costing the NFL as I’ve decided to use #21 for the cowboys. Anyone who bought that bum Julius’ jersey in the past 3 years just got lucky with a brand new Adam Jones jersey for the 2008-2009 season.
wow thats hilarious, i never thought of that before.
Of course when you see number 21 in a cowboys jersey you should see Deion Sanders in your head, not Julius Jones…but still thats funny about the jerseys.
not sure why you would want that kind of reminder of a jersey in the first place. the Kazmir thing still stings a little.
prior to 2004, i was considering getting a jersey with the number 86 on the back with the name “Buckner”. would have been even better if it were a throwback. alas, i don’t like to spend $100 on a shirt. also, it doesn’t really apply anymore.
you just gave me a great idea for my next Giants jersey. Last name “Eighteen AND” with the number 1.
that’s awesome. Even though i’m a Jets fan, i would definitely wear that jersey (I live in Boston). I’ve had it up to my receding hairline with annoying Pats fans.
I know being a Mets fan can be somewhat masochistic, but why would you want a Kazmir jersey anyway? The memory of July 2004 are painful enough, why wear it on your back? For that get a Bart Fortunato or Victor Zambrano jersey.
That being said, best of luck to Kazmir, Floyd, Di Felice and any other former Mets on the Rays; the Rays look much better than the Mets anyway…….
Since that’s my jersey, guess I might explain why I have it.
I only wear it to games when I’m disappointed with the team and its direction. Serves a few purposes: a) I tend to meet a bunch of interesting people who are also hardcore fans as 4-5 people come up to me per game to compliment the jersey; b) I have season seats within view of the owners’ box and I like the idea of the Wilpons/Minayas/Dave Howards potentially seeing it and knowing that some fans will remember if they mortgage the future for a boneheaded run at the playoffs; c) I interned for the team in 2003 and the most fun part of my day was reading the minor league scouting reports since the MLB team sucked so I grew a real affinity for Kazmir through reading those.
As to those who wrote that they’re going to buy a Kazmir jersey… it’s the best $100 I ever spent in my life.
Wearing a jersey serves a purpose? Er, um……uh….OK……
I saw a weird jersey yesterday that I couldn’t figure out. It said Jeter on the back with number 13 and was light blue. It had a KC on the front.
Completely irrelevant I know.
I also so a weird Wright jersey with different colors and a different number. I didn’t see the front of it, but I assumed it was either something from one of those world tour teams Wright played on, or one of the other 6 zillion guys with that name.
On a similar note, I already have a Wright jersey and have been trying to find a customizable blue/orange or old pinstripe jersey for Maine. I bought two patches on mlb.com shop, the last season at Shea one and the ‘86 world series one, figuring I could sew them on myself, but they ship them attached to this piece of plastic to make it nearly impossible to do so.
i wanna meet the guy that owns a scutaro jersey haha. i saw someone at a phils game with a phillie endy chavez jersey.
I thought the funniest thing I ever saw was the day Piazza retired. There was a link to purchase his jersey on Mets.com, which took you to customized jerseys. When you tried to put in Piazza 31, it told you that the jersey could not be completed.
I was at CBP in April at the Santana vs Hamels game. An alleged “Mets fan” was taunting the Philly fans wearing a Toronto Blue Jays Joe Carter jersey and a Mets cap……I thought that was sad and hysterical at the same time.
This “policy” is too funny!!! Are we in communist China or the USA?
I tried to order a 57 – Santana jersey the day after he got traded and the same thing happened, though I’m sure you can get one now.
So is the space between the z and the m supposed to make us forget that the Mets took part in one of the dumbest trades in NY history?
I’m getting a Pittsburgh jersey with “Castillo” on the back….please baseball gods, please….
A few years back I tried to but a 27 Guerrero Jersey and Mets.com wouldn’t allow me to put that combo together.
I have my last name, “Carew” on an offical custom made mets home jersey. No issues with them focribly changing the spacing or anything, though Rod Carew never played for the Mets (that said, I have confused a few people while wearing that jersey)!
I did get it several years ago, so who knows?
