Stat: Delgado is a Day Person
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 30, 2008 8:52 am

In the four games played with the Yankees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Carlos Delgado had four hits in 15 at bats, three of which were home runs, including 10 RBI while striking out two times.

Interestingly, Delgado was 4 for 9 in the two day games, but hitless in six at bats during the other two games.

This is not an isolated trend, though.

In 30 day games this season, Delgado is batting .293, while averaging one home run every 10 or so at bats.

However, in 49 night games this season, Delgado is batting just .190, while averaging one home run every 50 at bats.

that…is amazing…i’m not one to put a whole lot in to stats like this, but, wow, that one is hard to ignore

To put this in to perspective, at that rate, with those stats, if the Mets were to play 162 day games, apparently Delgado would hit .290 with roughly 45 HR and 130 or so RBI.

…hat tip to the Lets Go Mets blog for a heads up on the splits

Weird split trend on the stats there. I have played only softball under the lights and it is fine for hitting a softball. But that is different than picking up the spin of a curve in under .3 of a second I guess.

Regardless, nothing you can do about it. You can not sit him in night games and have him in day ones. I’d rather manage him by playing Pascucci against LH pitchers and him against RH ones and demote Cancel

great to see you pay attention.

Cancel was DFA’s last week, when we got andy Phillips… and stop with the man love on Pascucci, hes a career minor leaguer for a reason

Missed the cancel demotion. Obviously it was big news so I am under a rock somewhere (sarcasm).

As to the Pascucci love….please tell me your joking right. Andy Phillips, though obviously a much better glove, does not hold a ML bat. Pascucci has ripped AAA pitching 2 years in a row with major power. I guess he gets no love from you do to his age and minimal experience. But the light bulb goes on for different people at different ages. Its not like he is 35 or something. If he were 25…I’d imagine bad glove and all you would be calling for his installment as you are likely among the throngs of people on this site calling for Carp. Carp is not ready…though he deserves a callup to AAA at least. But Pascucci has hit for huge power and deserves a look from a team that is currently offensively challenged and has a 1b who is hitting near .240 and can’t hit at night.

Just checked up on him. Val is 30 yrs old, has an OPS number of 1.019 at AAA…a terrific number obviously. He also has 15 hrs in 200 at bats so far this year and is hitting just over .300. Further, he hit for an OPS last year of .967 in 450 at bats with 34 hrs and 98 rbi.

Does he really have no space on this ML team? With Delgado having the type of season he is having now for the 2nd year in a row, and the METS expected to make the playoffs, having an offensive player this capable rotting away at AAA as roster filler down there makes no sense. Unless we are poised to make a move in a trade, we could do alot worse than bringing up this guys bat and letting him against lefties instead of Delgado

Yes because he’s never been given a chance. everyone was saying the same thing when they were knocking the Church trade, how he is a back up on the Nationals for a reason. And now look.

I don’t think it’s a vision issue; I think it’s a tired issue. Delgado isn’t as young obviously, and he did recently have kids. I’m willing to bet that he wakes up in the morning most days. I think if he altered his schedule and woke up closer to game time he’d put together some better offensive games.

Is this an eyesight problem? Like, how some people can’t see when they’re driving at night w/o glasses?

Delgrampa needs glasses.

There are things you can do for people however if they are having vision issues with lights etc…

this is as strange as his whole season has been. However, sell high if you get the chance

Let’s hope Mets brass and Delgado look at this together and see if they can’t make adjustments/improvements. If we can get Big D to raise his avg. .25 to .40, then watch out NL.

Hes getting old. After his senior citizen dinner at 4:30 he needs to go to bed at 8pm so he can get up at 4 am for the early bird special.

:P

I was thinking this about him last year. His pitch selection is poor and he looks foolish at times. I have a similar problem in sports. During day games/matches in softball and tennis I see the ball a lot better. During night games or indoor matches I have a lot worse time seeing the ball. Maybe Carlos needs to adjust his contacts or simply needs to get them.

Man I hate to be that guy, but there were three day games and one night game in the series, not two and two (unless we’re calling Saturday’s game a night game).

Still, that’s a really amazing split.

Trade him to the Cubs!

BTW, what was that daytime average before the Yankees series?

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking…unfortunately, DLee is good in day games too.

I’ve actually thought for a little while now that he may have some eye sight problems. It seems as though he squints just about every time up. Now that I see theses splits, it seems as though there may be something to this. Maybe he should get his eyes checked and wear glasses or contacts (assuming he doesn’t wear contacts already).

This guy becomes more Major League every day. The Pedro Cerono look alike has now become Ricky Vaughn. Hopefully we can get him to wear those Black plastic rimmed glasses.

This stat only goes to PROVE that he’s way past his prime. Ever notice what time the eldery eat dinner? Yeah, like around 4pm, right? Old people lose energy earlier and earlier in the day.

Isn’t there a sign for DIamondvision lasik in Shea? Maybe Delgado can’t see it.

I can’t imagine this is truly because of ‘night’. Could it be as simple as needing glasses? (I heard that rumored once) Could it be he’s just older and works himself too hard before night games? (Generally they do less BP and all before day games) Is he solar powered? Scared of vampires? Allergic to the moon?

Delgado does only have 1 hit in four full moon games, that home run in Anaheim. If you expand it to days before and after the full moon, 2/29 with 1 HR 2 R and 1 RBI

Amazing split. I do agree there could be something with his eyes picking up the ball at night. Lets get that man to the eye Dr.

There was a thread about this on the Mets.com boards a few days ago regarding the stark difference in Delgado’s home run numbers in night and day games. This prompted me to check out his full day/night splits this year, and the difference is…well….night and day. A lot of folks there were thinking vision issues as well. Someone in the Mets organization needs to figure this out and see what it will take to get Delgado to hit like he does in day games after the sun goes down…

2008 Day:
116 AB, 20 R, 34 H, 7 2B, 10 HR, 27 RBI, 10 BB, 23 SO, .293 AVG, .349 OBP, .629 SLG

2008 Night:
179 AB, 19 R, 34 H, 6 2B, 4 HR, 18 RBI, 21 BB, 42 SO, .190 AVG!, .283 OBP, .291 SLG!

Does anyone remember hearing that Julio Franco used to take a nap before every game? I think its time for Delgado to start this.

Bring up a kid from the farm, platoon Carp or Pascucci with Anderson , Easley and Tatis . . . jeez, I think Tony Batista, Ryan Klesko and Jim Edmunds are out there.

Get creative. If you can get something for him, do it!!!!

If it’s his night vision, a Vitamin A supplement may help.

Maybe it really is a vision problem, which is pretty easily correctable. He could go on the DL, get the Lasik, and be back ready to play 2 weeks later. Didn’t Cliff Floyd get lasik eye surgery right before his 30 HR season?

maybe this can be one of those things they can do during the all star break. He won’t be going, so convince him to get his eyes checked and then they could do something about this. I thought they created something for players with this problem, like contacts with a tint or something along that line.
