Note: Tatis is a Defensive Replacement at 1B
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 1, 2008 8:11 am

Prior to yesterday’s game, Jerry Manuel explained to reporters that he will continue to replace Carlos Delgado with Fernando Tatis at first base for defensive reasons late in games, like he did during the weekend series against the Yankees.

Manuel, talking to reporters before yesterday’s game, said:

“Nothing against Carlos’s hands or anything, but I think Fernando gives us a little more range on that side. I explained it to him hoping that he would understand, which he did. But, knowing that he wouldn’t like it because of who he is and what he’s been to the game, I’m all right with that.”

i like it, except that it is tatis, a man who has played all of nine games at first base in his 10–year career, who is the defensive replacement for delgado, which speaks volumes about how this team’s roster is stacked by the way…

Delgado is on pace to commit to 16 errors this season.

He had eight errors total in each of the last two seasons.

  1. As long as tatis does not need to throw the ball to a pitcher covering………..

  2. Who is his Offensive Replacement???

  3. VelvetFoot says:

I was actually at that Friday game.
Tatis didn’t look like a defensive genius to me.
    2 errors as I recall.

    • UpperDeckDweller says:

Wasn’t Andy Phillips a pretty good fielding 1st baseman? I thought thats what the Yanks liked about him…maybe I’m wrong…

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

You’re not wrong. He’s above average defensively. But Omar likes Tatis better because they’re old friend with Expos ties.

        • metsfrenzy says:

You’re right on with this-why would you have picked Phillips up in the first place since he is a 1B not an outfielder where the Mets have played him.

The Mets trying to fill the OF reminds me of when they were trying to replace the fifth starter with Alay Soler and Jose Lima. Garbage in – Garbage out. Makes you sick

  4. VelvetFoot says:

Delgado might not have much range but he’s tall and has a good glove, digging out a lot of balls.

    • metsfrenzy says:

Which Delgaldo have you been watching? How did he do Sunday with the ball bouncing off his glove?

  5. Mookie1986 says:

How exactly is Tatis anybody’s defensive replacement?

  6. almar1965 says:

The way the roster is stacked?

    Talk about obvious.

As they mentioned on SNY this morning, soon it will be time for Omar to be on the hot seat unless things dramatically change.

Until proven otherwise (which they have yet to do) this team is mediocre.

    Period.

    …and yes, that was obvious. : )

  7. grotesmask says:

    Good mets Strategery!

  8. anrst says:

can’t we just FIRE OMAR already …

  9. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Why in the heck was Andy Phillips acquired and DFA’d then? His strength as a player is his strong defense at first base. Why the heck isn’t he the defensive replacement for Delgado?

    • Dirtysanchez says:

I agree. This does not make any sense from that standpoint. Phillips is way better at 1b than tatis..and if im not mistaken andy has played more games at 1b than tatis…I dont understand the move…

    • Nate W. says:

no idea, they even used Carlos Muniz for two innings in a bad loss. He would have been the obvious guy to send down…

Tatis might have more range, but he has to throw to the pitcher covering better for it to matter at all. At least if Tatis stops a grounder the baserunners can only take one base unlike with Delgado and Castillo spectating act.

They have no good defensive players for 1B or 2B, might as well keep Delgado in there to pick all the bad throws from Wright and Reyes…

  10. casey s. says:

    Flawed team, plain and simple.

How are those “In Omar we Trust” t-shirts selling these days?

  11. the Straw says:

How about the Mets trade Heilman to the Rays for Andy Sonnanstine. Heilman could set-up / close for the Rays with Percival’s injury problems. They need a more reliable late inning guy that Percival if they want to beat the Sox. Sonnanstine is pitching real well, 25 yrs old, and isnt a free agent until 2013. This could allow the Rays to bring up David Price, who is just about ready to hit the big leagues….

    THEN….

The Mets trade ollie Perez to the Tigers for Right Handed hitting, LF / 1b Marcus Thames. the tigers need a solid starter and may be a team willing to trade for him with hopes to re-sign him. The mets could use Thames in LF or 1b and is not a free agent until 2011. Of course Magglio and possibly Cabrera being hurt could screw the timing of this up until after the all-star break. But its still a good move…

Someone get Omar on the Phone pronto!

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Thames is a good power hitter, but I don’t think he’d fit on this team the way it is currently constructed. They need a high average guy who can hit with RISP, not an all or nothing slugger who hits for a low BA and doesn’t walk.

      • the Straw says:

I think his 15 hrs and .277 Batting Avg in part time work is a def upgrade at 1st or LF.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

He is a career .246 hitter. That .277 is him playing over his head. Do you honestly think he’d put up those numbers with the Mets? Keep in mind the history of players coming to the Mets.

        • the Straw says:

well he would def give an offensive upgrade which is much needed and if he plays well could be the LF next year until F-Mart or whoever is ready. or at worst be a LF/Ib off the bench.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

Im with chan on this one. They need an averages guy that is good at situational hitting(going for the double or single with RISP, rather than flying out hitting for the fence). The mets have a ton of HR threats in the lineup but none that really goes for the avg. Yes Thames would be an upgrade but would follow in line with the rest of the lineup imo.

        • the Straw says:

fair enough….back to the drawing board.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

I hear ya straw..feels like we have been at the drawing board all season…..

  12. SheaVendor says:

I tuned in last night during the top of the 2nd. The Mets were already down 2-0. The sad thing is..I knew this game was over. This offense, as currently put together, cannot put runs on the board. Last Friday was an illusion. Manuel must start implementing some line-up changes.

    • Mookie1986 says:

Line-up changes? Why? So they can all make outs in a different order?

      • SheaVendor says:

        LMAO!!!

      • Berbalerbs says:

While I agree in the logic and hilarity of Mookie’s comment I think we should at least TRY and switchup the lineup (and honestly I don’t give a good god damn how it’s switched up) because the definition of insanity is doing the same thing OVER and OVER and expecting different results…I’d like to see Church go back to the 2nd spot personally, then we’d at least have the 4 best (read: passable) offensive players back to back to back to back.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

The problem with that is what happens after the 4 players go back to back to back to back..You leave all your offense to the begining of the inning when they are up. If jose was more consistant than yea this may work out well but the guy is not. Id say forget about trying to resurect delgado(batting him 5th) and put church behind beltran. Then to switch it up put wright forth and beltran 3rd..see how that works…Thing is there is not that much room for drastic lineup changes but i think they should switch a few people around to see if we can get a reaction or something from these guys.

  13. Gina says:

Getting replaced by Tatis on defense is pathetic for us and him. How is he our best defensive option at first.

    • Mookie1986 says:

Actually Phillips was. That’s no longer an option.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Tatis and Minaya are old friends going back to their days with the Expos. Phillips didn’t have a shot.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

Man i really hope thats not the reason tatis got the nod over phillips…but there is definatly an explination due if tatis truly got the defensive job over phillips…

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I’m sure if you asked Omar, he’d cite Tatis being better offensively than Phillips. The thing is, Omar probably still thinks of Tatis as the player in 1999 who was a consistent threat and all star caliber player. Just like he still thinks that this team is the 2006 team that is just simply underperforming.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

Well this team is definatly not the 06 team for many reasons including the NL in general. There may be a case that can be made that they are underperforming imo.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

To an extent maybe, but it’s getting to the point where it’s going to be too long of a sample. This team has been playing under .500 for over a full calendar year now. That’s a long time to be underperforming. Soon, the “underperforming” label will have to be shed and the “simply not good” label will have to take over.

  14. Bobby Bones in SC says:

The team is more than flawed at this point.

Why Phillips wasn’t kept as the defensive replacement is very odd. Someone in the front office needs to answer that question. I like Tatis, but give me a break if you call him the defensive replacement.

    Last night’s game – 3 infield errors

    Other interesting facts…
Mets: 7 Hits and 7 K’s. Four hits were produced by the pinch hitting Phillips and Easley, while two came from the defensive player Chavez.

    Cards top three hitters (.300/.328/.357)
    Mets top three hitters (.292/.261/.283)

That is 50 points lower than the opposition. WOW. And we wonder why our offense sucks. Oh yeah, and just for the record the Cards top hitters did produce last night, while the Mets did not (again).

I had such high hopes this year. It is mid season and the Mets do not look like a team capable of winning 2 out 3, or 3 out of 4 from anyone. As far as I’m concerned there are very few players on this team who should be protected. If you want to throw Reyes in that group, I really don’t care, but I would certainly keep Wright, Santana, Maine, and Wagner. The rest can be dealt for the right deal. Time to start making the right moves and get this team on track.

    • mrose says:

I didn’t get to watch the game, but i’m gonna guess your math is wrong…I don’t think 2 pinch hitters could have 4 total hits…thats just me :)

  15. We always have the Rays to cheer for!!!

  16. patrick says:

    Tatis is what?

Jerry, I think you meant “Morons on the field, dopes on the bus.”

  17. grotesmask says:

I say Church, Pelfrey, and Joe Smith should stick around, too.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Agreed. I really have liked Church. Pelfrey stills has a great deal of upside potential.

  18. Bobby Bones in SC says:

If you wanted to get a little more generous I would also through in Schnieder. He seems to handle the pitchers well, and has not been the offensive bust he was suppose to be.

Maybe more importantly is that what I’m trying to say is this team needs to be overhauled. If that is replacing half of the players, bringing in a whole new coaching staff, or taking out members of the front office. I really don’t care at this point. Something needs to give because the current team seems to have some sort of cancer within. I highly doubt that there are very many Met fans out there who BELIEVE in this team. The Mets have played poorly before, but I still believed in them, and liked them. Now, I just can’t say that. Too many times I watch them and just feel like I’m being cheated.

Whent the game was over last night I turned off the TV and say to my son ‘the Mets suck”. Not something I want be saying!

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

You actually waited for the game to be over before turning off the TV? 5-0 Cards would have been sufficient.

    • patrick says:

Um…Schnieder to me has been, beyond his throwing, a huge disappointment.

He can’t be given credit for handling anyone well when Maine has sputtered, Perez has been a loon, Santana has underachieved and Pelfrey has despite the “framing” not been all that great with his 1 to 1 k to BB ratio.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Regarding Schneider, I agree. He would fit well with a team that has a great offense and he is not required to hit. But the way this team is constructed, carrying a below average hitting catcher isn’t a good fit.

        • MetLifer says:

Piazza is gone. Get over it. The days of being spoiled by a good offensive catcher is gone. Catching is a weak offensive position. 95% of the league don’t have a good offensive catcher. Live with it. There are other positions to worry about besides our catching.

        • Gina says:

I don’t think anyone said we need Piazza back. Just that a Catcher who’s as bad on offense as Schneider is sticks out like a sore thumb in a line-up like this.

But that being said, even as far as catchers go Schneider is one of the worst offensively in the league. So it’s not like we’re getting similar production from the catcher spot most teams are getting.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

          Exactly. Thank you.

  19. Bobby Bones in SC says:

YES. Just call me a glutton for punishment.

I want to believe in this team, but they make it almost impossible to watch.. I’m actually starting to worry that I will break the TV or foster a serious drinking problem if the season continues on it’s current track.

The good news is a do I have MLB Extra Innings, so when things get real bad I channel jump back and forth so I can at least watch snipets of another team who looks like they want to win.

  20. Berbalerbs says:

Yea, it’s getting really REALLY bad when there’s literally no reason to watch innings 7 8 and 9 if we’re trailing. Gary said it during the game yesterday that the mets haven’t come back from a deficit of more than 2 runs this entire season (if I recall correctly, was a few “god the mets suck” beers deep at that point)….that number is pathetic.

  21. MetsFan234 says:

I don’t think that Fernando Tatis is a defensive replacement for Carlos Delgado. For one, he doesn’t really hit for power. Since being called up to New York, he only has 1 home run. He probably be more of an outfield replacement more then a first base replacement.

  22. Chris in Japan says:

Test. Test. This is only a test.

  23. Chris in Japan says:

Damn, it’s hard to post here lately!

Just typed a long (and I thought well-thought out) message, and it was all for nought.

Don’t really feel like doing it again, so I’ll cut to the chase…

I think maybe Tatis wins out over Phillips because he can also spell Wright at third. The team relies too heavily on Easley because of Castillo’s fragility. Easley can’t play third and second at the same time.
