The Mets have now played 82 games in the 2008 season.
So, throughout the day today, I will be running a variety of polls that aim to give mid-season grades to Omar Minaya and key players on the Mets roster.
Orlando Hernandez, Angel Pagan and Moises Alou will all get an Incomplete for missing more than a few classes due to injury.
Moises Alou was scheduled to play in a minor-league rehab game last night for the Gulf Coast League Mets, but the game was rained out.
…alou did not slip in a puddle and hurt himself, so no worries on that front…
According to Jerry Manuel, Alou hopes to play in two or three games for St. Lucie – after which he may rejoin the Mets this weekend in Philadelphia.
In the 98 games Moises Alou has started over the last two seasons, the Mets are 53–45 (.540). However, in the 147 games he has missed, the Mets are 75–72 (.510).

Prior to last night’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Angel Pagan is considering season-ending surgery on his left shoulder, which has had him on the disabled list since mid May.
…from what i can gather, for weeks now he has been able to throw, but is still struggling to raise his arm above his head…and, while he can hit from one side of the plate, he’s unable to hit from the other…
In the 31 games played before he injured his shoulder diving for a ball in the stands, Pagan was batting .275 with 11 walks in 91 at bats for the Mets, while playing all three outfield positions.
Prior to yesterday’s game, Jerry Manuel explained to reporters that he will continue to
replace Carlos Delgado with Fernando Tatis at first base for defensive reasons late in games, like he did during the weekend series against the Yankees.
Manuel, talking to reporters before yesterday’s game, said:
“Nothing against Carlos’s hands or anything, but I think Fernando gives us a little more range on that side. I explained it to him hoping that he would understand, which he did. But, knowing that he wouldn’t like it because of who he is and what he’s been to the game, I’m all right with that.”
…i like it, except that it is tatis, a man who has played all of nine games at first base in his 10–year career, who is the defensive replacement for delgado, which speaks volumes about how this team’s roster is stacked by the way…
Delgado is on pace to commit to 16 errors this season.
He had eight errors total in each of the last two seasons.
During last night’s loss to the Cardinals, John Maine pitched just four innings, letting up seven hits and three walks, while giving up two runs in the first and one run in each of the next three innings.
Maine, talking to reporters after the game, said:
“When I was warming up, I didn’t feel that great. I was feeling bad,
like I was sick, my arm just didn’t have any life on the ball. I had nothing and you could tell…Hopefully you just chalk it up to one of those days. I just got to work a little harder between starts. It was bad preparation between last start and this start and I’ve got to get back on a routine and get back to where what I was doing…I just had a dead arm tonight. I had no life on my fastball. I couldn’t get any swing and misses…I just didn’t feel it tonight.”
Jerry Manuel, on Maine, after the game, said:
“John Maine wasn’t quite right…John works hard, and you might be getting toward the end of the first half and he’s still a young guy who is developing. I don’t think there’s been many nights where he didn’t feel the ball come out of his hands like he did tonight. He didn’t really feel the ball come out of his hands…So, my only concern, if there is a concern, would be how he feels tomorrow when he plays catch to make sure t here’s nothing physically wrong. But, that sort of thing happens to pitchers at times, they don’t have it and he didn’t have it tonight.”
…the dead-arm phase happens to nearly every pitcher in every season…the question is how long will it last…from what i understand, the key to rebounding is how he works out between starts…by the way, maine will likely have two more starts before getting a solid 10 days off during july…
