Ben Shpigel of the New York Times reports RHP Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez may make his first rehab start next week and may be able to join the team by the end of the month.
…who is the el duque fella you speak of…
According to Shpigel, Hernandez threw batting practice on Tuesday in Port St. Lucie and the team is still deciding where he will make his rehab starts and whether to use him in relief or in the rotation once he returns to the major league roster.
Hernandez has been rehabbing a strained tendon in his foot.
Shpigel also reports on Sandy Alomar’s work with the team’s infielders to improve their defense and Jerry Manuel’s management of Pedro Martinez.

He’s………….alive?
Is it just me, or is it not ironic that this is the post coming immediately after Matt’s unfortunate stubbing of the toe (couldn’t it at least have been doing something good like getting taken out on a take-out slide on a DP play at 2B or something like that — but getting ready for work)???
give me a break- he does not deserve a slot in the rotation
Bullpen.
What is the over/under on his actual age these days?
There is no over/under. He’s 27. And he has the original hand written birth certificate to prove it.
Let the rotation vs. bullpen debate resume!
Big Pelf has really stepped up to the task. He’s earned his stay. And lord knows nobody else is moving. I hope we try to make room for El Duque as a long-man rather than a starter. Then, if Pedro gets injured, we have Old Man Magic Show.
Unless of course they decide to trade Ollie (in a package) for some offensive pop at 1B or LF.
i know this is annoying but wilmer flores had his fourth staright game he hit a hr. he also hit a double. this kid is frieken owning. all or his hits have been rips. he is still 16! What is ur guys thoughts
Tell me about him in 3-4 years.
he is mini hanley
scouts are saying he is extremley strong an mature. could be up in couple years
I don’t doubt he is. But I’d bet it’s at least 3 years before he makes any kind of impact on our major league team.
im just excited cause we finally have a rookie who is attracting some interest. i mean fernando is sucking right now.
i wish we landed ihno though……
Fernando’s raised his season OPS to .775. In May it was .928 and June it was 1.291. He’s definitely not sucking right now. He hasn’t been sucking since April.
Also Niese is pitching well. Carp is hitting well. Kunz has been great as a closer. It’s not like Flores is the only good thing in the farm system.
F-Mart is sucking? Really? Last I saw he was 8 for 17 since coming off the DL for the B-Mets, batting .406 and .299 overall. He was 3 for 5 his first game back and 2 for 4 on Sunday. I’d say he’s back on schedule.
He’s going to be a Miguel Cabrera clone. All bat, but no real position.
Hopefully his attention to fitness is better as he’s going to be a very rich ‘child’ in a few years…
If he’s that good in a few years, but still can’t bad, we can always trade him to an AL team fora nice package.
Of course I think scouts said the same thing about Prince Fielder and he’s been fine at first base, but i would assume we would have some sort of long-term solution for first base by then. Whether it’s Carp or Davis or Dunn/Tex.
yep. Just gotta make sure when he makes it to the show hes really ready for it.
does anyone think that fernando will be our starting left fielder next year. if not who will it be?
I think it’s way too early for that question, metfan. Omar will have a lot of money to play around with and if he can’t land a big bat at first base, he’ll likely pursue a big bat in LF. I can’t imagine having rookies at both positions…
Who are we going to send down for El Duque? At this point I’d rather them bring Vargas back.
yea really, I wouldnt rate Duque any higher than the group of Armas, Vargas, Figueroa even if he’s back to normal…
I dont see room for him before Sept 1st.
Figueroa really?? Cmon now……stop….
You can’t be serious. When El Duque’s on, he’s on. There is a reason why this guy is 42 and is still pitching in the majors – he can pitch, no doubt about it. If he’s “back to normal” – whenever that may be – I want him on the roster for sure. Who are we sending down? How about Armas? Who are we sending down when Alou comes back? How about Tatis?
I really don’t care about him any more. I can’t stand any more players coming in late in a season and trying to come back. Alou is enough and only cause he actually is worth having in the line-up the two or three games he plays.
Were the Mets really waiting for him to come back?
Enough. Let it go. The El Duque era is over and has been over for quite some time.
I don’t think the Mets were waiting, or counting on El Duque coming back. I’m sure they consider getting anything out of him as a bonus.
Put him in the pen. If he doesnt like it, then there’s the door. Thanks but no thanks. Enough already.
Is there anything we can do about Castillo.
Can we eat that contract make him a bench player, claim he’s injured all the time, throw him on the DL.
I don’t care what they do, I just want to look at the free agent second baseman and dream, dream of a second baseman with the ability to hit a homerun.
As a fan I can care less about the money with Castillo’s contract. Lets eat it and eventually get someone else.
He’s was a ’small ball’ pro with excellent defense.
Now he’s worthless and crappy defense to boot.
The contract looks horrible, but I don’t want to see Omar go. I want Omar here for a while.
What did castillo do this time……
and who do you think should play 2b fulltime…easly? ahern?
I just want to look at the FREE AGENT second baseman and dream.
Talkin future, I can’t imagine castillo one year older let alone 3 years older.
Well if Orlando Hudson makes it to free agency, he has said he’d love to play in Flushing (of course it could just be a ploy)…Thats a big if however. 2nd base is probably the shallowest postion in the bigs in terms of talent and depth. A guy like Hudson can command a great contract, and will get interest from many teams….The 4 year deal to Castillo was tough to swallow, but imagine how much worse the team would be if they didn’t get him (for the record, Gotay is hitting on the interstate).
I hate to defend Castillo, but I thought I heard a stat that he leads the team in batting avg, with runners in scoring position
He does, but it’s mostly because the rest of our team has been horrible with RISP. He’s tied for 28th in the league with RISP.
28th of 208 position players (assuming 13 position players/team) isn’t that bad.
It’s out of 119, min 50 plate appearances with RISP to qualify, but you’re right it’s not bad. It’s just not like he’s been amazing with RISP.
I have to disagree with all of you. I know I am in the minority but….the mets have been a .500 or sub .500 this whole season without Duque and Alou. I dont think they will magically turn this thing around. They do not have the pieces in the minors to trade for anything great.
So the only chance this team has for making a run is if Alou and Duque can give us 1/2 a season of health.
I dont care where Duque is pitching, rotation or bullpen, if hes healthy he can help.
And if these guys do come back healthy, and this team makes a run, then everyone will be saying how smart Omar was for being patient with his team and not making a desperate mid-season trade.
Can he play Left Field?
fernando plays every outfield position
Is he finally coming back? I think that if he comes back and pitches his first five starts (and are wins) i can see the mets giving him a contract but i dont see that happening. I think either he will retire or will go to another team because i don’t think the mets want to waste more money on him with all the injuires he has had.
Wasn’t el Duque our best pitcher for most of last year?
Kind of. Maine was our best pitcher the first half, but he sort of imploded the second of. For the games he was actually in El Duque was very effective.
El “Who” que???
haha awesome because you put who before “que” which means “what” in spanish…very nice
I can’t wait to see his dominating 55 mph curveball.
That thing gets tons of swings and misses. I love that curve…
We would be better suited to offer RON Darling a contract.
El Duque is not going to do anything but take a roster spot from a more desrving young player that we can develop. AKA Armas,Kunz, ETc,,,,
Be real. trade this guy for cash and some baseballs to anyone that will take the contract.
Maybey AARP will be interested
Armas isn’t exactly young.
Okay, the answer here is simple. Get Duque healthy, tell him not to pitch.
Make the postseason (that’s the hard step)
Throw El Duque pretty much every single postseason game. Let him start, let him relieve, let him close, let him pinch hit, I don’t care.
