News: Cerrone breaks toe

July 2, 2008 at 9:57 am · 72 comments

by Ted Berg

According to a source close to MetsBlog.com, Matt Cerrone injured his toe while getting ready for work this morning and took himself to the emergency room for x-rays.

Cerrone, who has previously been bothered by knee problems and peanut butter, is expected to miss at least several hours of posting on MetsBlog.

…i get the sense that he will be okay, but apparently the toe is in bad shape… no word on whether the injury will require a walking boot or a stint in extended spring training…

Update…

X-rays revealed a severe break. Doctors have confirmed that Cerrone will require crutches and walking boot.

…amazing… this team just can’t avoid the injury bug…

I was wondering where he was. Get better Matt…

any update on exactly how he did it? Did he drop an Iron on it?

Ted Berg July 2, 2008 at 10:09 am

Reports are murky, but I think he honestly just stubbed it.

MajorLeagueSarcasm July 2, 2008 at 10:17 am

Man. I hate boring injuries. He should have at least made it interesting.

BTW Bloggers need to get into the 21st century. You can’t be having professionals walking around a house with things they can stub their toes on. Now, we are without our best blogger. Interleague-blogging is getting old!

Dirtysanchez July 2, 2008 at 10:30 am

lmao!!

koosman3669 July 2, 2008 at 11:40 am

Ted, please update us as to when he can start typing off of flat ground.

itsmetsforme July 2, 2008 at 11:30 am

i hope… people notice Ted’s icing on the comedic cake…the inclusion…of …Cerrone’s…”elliptical” stylings…

Louis619 July 2, 2008 at 10:15 am

Matt Cerrone has been designated for assignment. The Mets have ten days to trade him, or he’ll report back to Metsblog.

Dirtysanchez July 2, 2008 at 10:31 am

or another blog may pick him up……

Knuckler July 2, 2008 at 10:03 am

I don’t mean to laugh….but the way Ted ran the story is hilarious!!!! Get well soon Matt.

ravi3 July 2, 2008 at 10:16 am

haha agreed…and the title of the last post was a gem:

“Notes: Reports of arm’s death exaggerated”

Scree July 2, 2008 at 10:04 am

Matt – Say hi to Moises for me.

get well.

DjDeF July 2, 2008 at 10:05 am

Who comes off the DL first Matt or Moises?

Slob July 2, 2008 at 10:06 am

What a bum. Release him ASAP.

Genesis Does July 2, 2008 at 10:06 am

Get Well Soon Matt.

Dont get on any planes with the team, itll only make the symptoms worse, No matter what they tell you.

Danny July 2, 2008 at 10:09 am

Tell the truth, it’s really a bunion, right?

NickA33 July 2, 2008 at 10:10 am

I don’t mind that he injured his toe…what really irks me is the way he threw down his coffee mug after the injury. Did you see how he just walked over to the front door on his way to the hospital?

Seems to me that if Cerrone actually cared, he would have thrown less of a tantrum and made the effort to get to the hospital more quickly.

So immature..trade him. NOW!

mrosey July 2, 2008 at 11:08 am

lmao

amen1986 July 2, 2008 at 10:10 am

Post of the year, thanks Ted!
I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April 1.
Feel better Matt! Are you rehabbing in Brooklyn or Kingsport?

DjDeF July 2, 2008 at 10:23 am

I think we would all prefer it to be April 1 so this season could start over

starz31 July 2, 2008 at 10:47 am

haha right on both accounts.

TheBigStapler July 2, 2008 at 10:11 am

Man, that blows!

Hellbelly July 2, 2008 at 10:11 am

……..i blame Reyes.

rantman888 July 2, 2008 at 11:06 am

I blame Willie.

LGNYM July 2, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Clearly its Delgado’s fault…

Dirtysanchez July 2, 2008 at 10:11 am

Man the met injury bug extends to the bloggers….
Get well soon Matt!!!!

KingWright July 2, 2008 at 10:12 am

Maybe he can get his boot signed by Hernandez.

Displaced Mets Fan July 2, 2008 at 10:12 am

And here we were, hoping to trade him for a Right Handed Firstbaseman — what type of trade value will he have now? Who they calling up to replace him? Is this going to be another stint of Robinson Cancel?

Displaced Mets Fan July 2, 2008 at 10:13 am

And if Willie was Manager, this never would have been allowed to happen

mrose July 2, 2008 at 10:16 am

hahahahah

mr.gee21 July 2, 2008 at 10:17 am

As if Omar couldn’t see this coming? Fire Omar!

Nate W. July 2, 2008 at 10:17 am

This post and string of replies is making it hard to feel sorry for Matt. Hilarity

‘well played’ Ted!

MajorLeagueSarcasm July 2, 2008 at 10:19 am

Yes it is. Matt is going to come back and be like:

“Dude. You are making my fans laugh. We can’t have any of this. These are METS FANS. They do not laugh!”

Mookie1986 July 2, 2008 at 10:17 am

Peanut butter?

OK. Here’s what you do. Smear the peanut butter all over your toe, then have the dog lick it off. The doggy spit will heal your toe in no time at all!

BTW, I’m looking forward to reading the incredibly embarrassing story that precedes this.

NickA33 July 2, 2008 at 10:23 am

But it’s YOUR dog…

Mookie1986 July 2, 2008 at 10:26 am

And your point is… what?

My dog not good enough for Matt’s fractured lower digit?

Why I’ve never been so insulted in all my life!

Good day sir…

I said GOOD DAY!

Chan Ho Parking Lot July 2, 2008 at 10:32 am

Yeah, we got it.

sheahey81 July 2, 2008 at 12:25 pm

“But its YOUR dog”

Most people missed that “Road Trip” reference..

I got your back NickA33

BigDaddyKirk July 2, 2008 at 11:40 am

Too bad Peterson is gone. He could fix that toe in 10 minutes!

amen1986 July 2, 2008 at 10:18 am

Ed Coleman is reporting that we’ve just traded Fernando Martinez to the Rays for one of their mediocre veteran bloggers….it’s Kazmir all over again!

magic00700magic July 2, 2008 at 10:18 am

Any truth to rumor that Matt tripped over is newly grown goatee (which he started to grow after Jerry softened prohibitions of growing facial hair)?

domosnacks5 July 2, 2008 at 10:21 am

Willie softened up those rules a long time ago.

MetsFan4Decades July 2, 2008 at 10:18 am

Great post – too funny.

I think it’s all smoke and mirrors to get Matt a stint on the DL so he can infiltrate and see what’s REALLY going on with injured guys such as Alou and Orlando – lol.

GravediggerHebner July 2, 2008 at 10:19 am

The pecking order of Metsblog will be revealed by which writer gets to hold up Matt’s leg while the rest of the writers bathe him.

Mookie1986 July 2, 2008 at 10:23 am

I just realized this means no new postings of mid-season grades!

Aw, man! I was looking forward to some hardcore voting.

You do know that this minor setback is enough for me to warrant dropping your grade down to a B-, don’t you?

Yeah. You just take a moment to think about what it is you’ve done, young man.

kd bart July 2, 2008 at 10:27 am

When did Moises Alou change his name to Matt Cerrone?

zer09 July 2, 2008 at 10:29 am

What a bummer. A boot in the middle of the summer. I hope you at least get the wheelchair seating in Shea for free… get better soon Matt!

Dirtysanchez July 2, 2008 at 10:32 am

So i guess ted takes matts spot in the order…whos left on the bench?

foul bunt strikeout July 2, 2008 at 10:34 am

But its the summer of CERRONE!!!!

He was going to read a book and pray frolf!

krumbledkookie July 2, 2008 at 11:50 am

I WAS IN THE POOL!!!!

mrmet1969 July 2, 2008 at 10:34 am

Get better Matt and don’t come back unless you are 100%. We do not need any heroes or setbacks. All the best.

cver July 2, 2008 at 10:37 am

I hope this is a joke, although a weird one. I’m guessing it isn’t though and in that case, Matt – feel better, man! Too bad!

Ceetar July 2, 2008 at 10:38 am

Will he be ready for the Phillies series though? Do we need to call someone else up? This day-to-day stuff leaves our bench short!

davenappy July 2, 2008 at 10:41 am

I could not contain my laughter when I read this post. Get better soon Matt, regards to El Duque, Moises, and Angel Pagan when you see them during your rehab stint. And no late night/early morning cab rides for you either!

Flushing_is_Burning July 2, 2008 at 10:43 am

this post can probably go into blogging HOF as one of the funniest post ever!!

Not the Matt getting hurt part, now that’s not funny.

Get well soon, Matt. and don’t hang out with Mets players too much, apparently they are contagious.

dave27 July 2, 2008 at 10:44 am

My sources tell me Matt was actually injured while trying to type an update on Alou and El Duque…any truth to that rumor?

MetsFan234 July 2, 2008 at 10:46 am

Get well soon Matt so that you can give us some more mets info!!!

QueenOfQueens July 2, 2008 at 10:53 am

Just hilarious! Thanks for the laugh Ted :)

dcmetsfan July 2, 2008 at 10:59 am

You sure Matt wasn’t injured while riding in a cab at three in the morning?

Get better soon.

TRex23 July 2, 2008 at 11:11 am

To Matt:

Having broken the little toe on both of my feet — and rather badly at that — you need to realize that the break is least of the problems. You should be checked for ligament or tendon damage (whatever there is in the toe, I’m not sure). Both times I broke it, there was nothing they could do for the break so it naturally healed. However, I have pain in both little toes now when I put pressure on them, no doubt due to some structural damage caused by the same incident that caused the break in the bone.

molder July 2, 2008 at 11:14 am

Hurting toes suck…..I merely bruised my little toe (no breaks seen in x-rays) 6 months ago and there is still some pain if i lean on it the wrong way.

raylyman78 July 2, 2008 at 11:11 am

Interesting injury.

I guess it could be worse and could have been an injury like Brandon Inge just suffered moving a pillow.

mrosey July 2, 2008 at 11:12 am

Is Matt gonna rehab by writing for the Mets minor league blog?

Get well soon.

gottabelieve07 July 2, 2008 at 11:12 am

This only happened because Willie sucks, Omar’s a racist and the Wilpons are cheap and clueless.

Is it Lima time now?

dont_stop_believin_BK July 2, 2008 at 11:12 am

Hope the toe heals quickly, dude.

AzMetsFan July 2, 2008 at 11:19 am

Matt,

Be like Moises and pee on those digits. They’ll be able to withstand 100lb weights falling on them and taxis driving over them in no time.

Feel better soon!

DerangedHermit July 2, 2008 at 1:24 pm

If urine is such a magical potion, Moises Alou should take golden showers so he doesn’t get injured all the time.

beltran the warrior July 2, 2008 at 11:28 am

matt cerrone = moises alou?

Zoe July 2, 2008 at 11:37 am

Matty!! How do you injure your toe getting ready? And so badly? Aw, hon.

GregB July 2, 2008 at 11:37 am

Any news on which toe it is? Why can’t we get accurate injury information?

I hope it wasn’t ‘the piggie that went to market’!

Jmiles July 2, 2008 at 11:37 am

With thr Yankees and Mets both on over the 4th you can chill and start the healing
feel better we need you
Peace, JM

Nate W. July 2, 2008 at 11:40 am

SNY is reporting that Toby Hyde has been recalled from http://www.metsminorleagueblog.com to take Matt’s roster spot.

I wonder if Manuel will play him, or bury him on the bench like Willie…

amazin82 July 2, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Hyde will blog, but only against right-handed starters until he “gets into a nice little rhythm”, stated Jerry Manuel. He may also be used as a late inning replacement for Berg “for defensive purposes”, despite never having live-blogged before.

Cerrone is expected to cover the Mets Minor League blog in a rehab assignment with an eye to rejoining the big league club at the All-Star break.
