News: Alou to Rehab in Bingo, Eyeing Philly
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 3, 2008 8:26 am

Moises Alou was 2 for 3 with a home run on Tuesday night in a rehab game for the Gulf Coast League Mets.

He was scheduled to play a rehab game on, but the game was rained out, as was last night’s game as well.

To avoid another rain out, he will continue his rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Friday.

had he been able to play Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, as the team hoped, he could have rejoined the Mets this weekend in Philadelphia…now the talk is that he’ll join them, still in Philadelphia, but on Monday instead…however, my bet is he rejoins the team at home in New York on Tuesday, when they begin a series against the Giants…

Lets just hope he doesn’t hurt himself getting dressed this weekend.

  2. Yeah. Who would ever hurt themselves getting ready in the morning for work. Whoever would do that must be a horrible person.

Enough! Enough already with Alou. I will bet anything he is not back on Tuesday either. I am sick of reading optimistic reports on Alou’s comeback only to see it be “pushed back” for one reason or another. Let him play in Bingo or Brooklyn tonight and then activate him for Philly. We need him NOW! What is the downside? Are they concerned he may get hurt again? Isn’t that pretty much inevitable. I know it’s not Alou’s fault that his games were being rained out but I am starting to dislike this guy. Alou+Delgado+Castillo = Omar’s unemployment. (Pedro is slowly working his way into that equation)

What do people think of this lineup? Given this recent series in which the Cardinals’ pitcher bats 8th, it got me thinking about Reyes. A lot of Reyes’ power goes for naught, since he is a leadoff batter and often comes up with no one on (either to start a game or because the 8th and 9th batters are in front of him). What do you guys this of this lineup, given the current players. This would be a shakeup and also get more use out of their players:

    Reyes
    Church
    Wright
    Beltran
    Delgado
Chavez (if Castilo is playing, Easley if not)
    Schneider
    Pitcher’s Spot
Castillo (if he is playing, Chavez if not)

    • Gina says:

Switch Beltran and Church and I love it.

      • There's Always '09 says:

What we have here, on days that Castillo is playing, is a black hole from 6-7-8-9. On days that Castillo is playing, Castro needs to catch. We just don’t have enough offense to make up for lack of production from 6-9. That is about half of the order with zero pop.

        • Gina says:

Castillo can still get obp, so it’s not a complete black hole, and taking him out of the two hole, in theory, gives him fewer opportunities to hit into dps. And gives Reyes more opportunities to drive runners in. It’s not the greatest thing ever but it’s probably the best option we have.

If he has a good game tonite, I feel as though they will rush him to Philly…maybe not for game one, but certainly game 2.

  6. fongulalou says:

Thank God!–this way I don’t have to sit in box seats behind the plate this weekend in philly and boo alou when my anger is
and should be directed toward the guy who gave these contracts to guys who(as I said here all winter&spring) cant
be counted on to stay on the field!

  7. dap260 says:

Thank god they are keeping him away from raindrops, I can only imagine what the trauma from a few raindrops would do to his fragile body.

Another thing is that I would NEVER play Alou in rehab games. At best it appears he will manage not to be on a stretcher 60 games a year, why do we want 10 of them to be rehab starts.

I guess all we can really hope for is a handful of games, followed by an injury that is clear cut to immediately put him back on the DL, so we can avoid one of those “tweener” injuries that keeps him on the bench for a week, then one at bat, then the DL…..

    • There's Always '09 says:

One would think that this trauma you speak of would be similar to that of a pitcher running the bases. Just ask Hankenstein and Wang.

  8. Gland says:

I’m not really understanding why he bothers with a rehab start. We all know that he can hit and that he only has a few games before he hurts himself. Activate him on Friday and get whatever you can out of him. Better he gets a few hits vs. the Phillies before he gets injured than if he wastes them down in the minors.

    • dykstraw II says:

yeah, i agree. what is the point of all these rehab starts? if we need him for any 4 games this year, we need him for the weekend.

but it’s not like this team can ever get its roster straightened out.

    • Nate W. says:

you do remember what happened last time right?

when he didnt do any rehab and just came back cold…

I’ll take missing him for a couple more days if he can gradually work up to 9 full innings without pulling something.

  9. Nate W. says:

…good, its not like it ever rains in Binghamton or anything…

I live just about due east of Binghamton and there is a good chance of showers and thunderstorms all weekend.

    Good luck Moises!

  10. Nate W. says:

what I dont understand is, why doesnt Alou play with the St. Lucie Mets at night on the road?

Florida is a great place to rehab, as the GCL teams play in the afternoon, and the FSL teams play at night. Moises could have traveled with the St. Lucie team and played their night game last night.

  11. theperfectgame says:

Just in: Alou in need of cornea transplant following excessive eyeing of Philly. Out ’til mid-August.

  12. Nate W. says:

also, with Marlon Anderson on the roster and the Cards starting a RHP why do they need an extra OFer for today’s game?

Anderson, Chavez, Church. with Tatis and Beltran on the bench. Seems like enough OFers to me…

and uh, why didnt they just keep Trot Nixon on the roster instead of inventing an injury so they could add Phillips for two days…
There is your extra OFer right there. Its as if they cant plan more than one day ahead.

  13. John The Mets Fan says:

Its real depressing when the best news going into the All Star Break is that Moises Alou went 2 for 3 for the GCL Mets…..

    • Nate W. says:

The Mets had another nice offensive game last night and are on a two game winning streak… oh, whoops.

    • garykeithron says:

actually i think the best news is that havens had a game winning 3-run HR in the 9th last night for brooklyn

      • Gina says:

It will be better news in 2010.

      • dave27 says:

When I bought Cyclones tix for a game in a few weeks I didn’t know we’d have 3 first rounders playing there. Good stuff – looking forward to it.

  14. ParisWilponCOO says:

For a minute there, I thought the headline was “Alou to rehab FROM Bingo”- that he had injured himself with one of those highlighter-things, or maybe strained his vocal cords yelling ‘bingo’ after a win…

  15. patrick says:

I hope in like 2013 we can still just have blog posts from Matt on the health of Alou just for old time sake

  16. Bobby Bones in SC says:

I’m not worried about what day Moises joins the team.

But I am worried about how many days he spend in the starting line-up for the remainder of the year.

  17. cver says:

With all of our elderly players rehabbing so much, Bingo is an appropriate name for that club. Maybe they should have some Early Bird Special Promotionals there, too.

  18. dave27 says:

I got ripped the other day for referring to the Mets lack of urgency getting guys on the field…but here we go again.

Does Moises Alou REALLY need 3 games of minor league ABs to be “ready?” If he is healthy enough for rehab, how the hell can you rationlaize skipping over four CRUCIAL games in Philly just because he missed out on some ABs in the Florida State League. Am I crazy? Is it me? If he plays four more games all year – a distinct possibility – thse four are as good as any.

But no, Omar’s on this as usual. Let’s drop 3 of 4 to the Phillies while Alou goes 5 for 12 against some AA pitchers, and then activate him for some utterly worthless games against the freaking Giants. Or maybe he can hurt himself in Bongo since he probably only has a few dozen healthy ABs in him anyway.

    • dave27 says:

And before I get torn a new one, this comment is predicated on my understanding that ‘rehab’ games are geared towards getting a player’s timing back, not building strength, because honestly you are not going to build anything in 3 days as far as strength, and Alou will have his timing when he’s 90.
