News: Muniz Down, Aguila likely to Return
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 3, 2008 7:49 am

Carlos Muniz has once again been demoted back to Triple-A New Orleans.

Last night, he let up a walk-off home run to Troy Glaus with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

According to Adam Rubin, at his blog for the Daily News, citing ‘pregame buzz,’ Chris Aguila will likely replace Muniz on the roster until Moises Alou returns.

In six at bats with the Mets in June, the 29–year-old Aguila had one hit and struck out twice.

  1. Oh Darn. I was hoping for another catcher.

I stayed up to watch that depressing game and now I’m tired at work. This sux. Why WWWWWWWWWWWWHHHHHYYY!!!!!

  3. kd bart says:

Muniz deserved demotion after that pitch to Glaus. 2 out 3-2 count. The one thing you don’t want to do is give Glaus a pitch he can hit out of the ballpark. If he walks or singles, fine. Just go on to the next batter. Schneider called for and setup for a fastball away. If it misses, ball four. If he hits it, the best Glaus can hope for is a single to right. What does Muniz throw? A fastball on the inner half of the plate right in his wheelhouse. Missed the target by a foot. Glaus is strong enough to hit it out even though he didn’t get it all.

Pitching is like real estate. It is all about location, location, location. Muniz failed miserably on that pitch.

He shouldve been sent down for Armas….not that I care much about Andy Phillips but hes better then Chris Aguila…

  5. dykstraw II says:

vargas should have never been sent down. period. omar’s roster moves are baffling.

    • krumbledkookie says:

Yeah, I seriously don’t get this. If Muniz is taken seriously as a possibility to make a contribution to this team at some point now or down the road, by the time they’re ready for him he’ll be out of options and either be traded or DFA’d , only to get claimed by someone else. He’s never really been given a chance to pitch. Can anyone say Heath Bell?

  6. guierllNO MOta says:

is Heath Bell any good away from SD? Im asking, I have no idea…but every pitcher is good in SD…

dykstraw, agreed…although I think the roster moves are suggest by Jerry first…i mean they must be…oh well through, Vargas passed through, which baffles me, so when Pedro goes on the DL any day now we have a call up.

  7. guierllNO MOta says:

also Heath Bell was given 327498237 chances, lets not pretend like he didnt get called up a half dozen to a dozen times and he sucked every single one of them, he never showed a flash of being a viable option while in a Mets uniform, they gave him 3 years of trying.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

for the record it was 81 appearances over 3 seasons for Bell.

      Bell at home this season:
      IP ERA H R ER BB K
      25.2 1.40 16 4 4 3 16

Bell away from SD this season:
      20 3.15 17 7 7 10 20

  8. EliPorter says:

i know the val pascucci movement has died down a bit, but i would have liked to see pascucci get a chance to play, even if it was for a few games. we’ve already tried aguila, and its pretty apparent the guy cant play at this level.

anyways, as for tonight, it looks like beltran is out of the lineup. this should be our lineup

    SS-Reyes
    CF-Chavez
    RF-Church
    3B-Wright
    1B-Delgado
    2B-Easley
    LF-Tatis
    C-Schneider/Castro

  9. mrosey says:

Muniz was so clueless that he was waiting for another ball after Glaus hit a walk off.

  10. cver says:

Omar doesn’t seem to know much about roster moves. This one seems too kneejerk. This kid Muniz seems like the real deal and although he gave it up last night, I think we could benefit by keeping him up, because he can get the experience he needs up in the Show and benefit the club short and long term. Just my hunch – which seems to be as good as Omar’s has lately. I just remember what happened to Heath Bell. I defnitely wasn’t in favor of keeping him, it’s just that Heilman can give it up over and over and he stays up to get fixed. I know Heilman is older and more “mature”, just my 2 cents. If this kid feels every time he goes up there and fails, that he’ll go back down, that’s a lot more pressure.

  11. MetLifer says:

With the amount of injuries this team has, there has to be a guy with options that can go up and down as needed. It’s a lot easier to shuffle a RP back and forth than a position player who needs some kind of rhythm. Muniz just happens to be the guy this year.
