Argenis Reyes will arrive with Chris Aguila in St. Louis before today’s game with the Cardinals, to take the roster spots of Carlos Muniz, who will be demoted to Triple-A, and Luis Castillo, who will be placed on the 15–day Disabled List.
…this morning on MetsBlog, i wrote that either reyes or Abraham Nunez would get the call, and i’m glad to see it is reyes…
Reyes, 25, is hitting .290 with 11 doubles and a .353 OBP in 79 games for Triple-A New Orleans, while hitting .358 in 81 at bats against left-handed pitchers.
In six at bats with the Mets in June, the 29–year-old Aguila had one hit and struck out twice.

The youth movement has begun!!!!!!
Yeah … and he better be in the God Damn lineup.
I’d imagine Easley will be starting.
Fine. In left field. Reyes at 2nd. Pointless to bring him up to sit on the bench.
Why? He’s not a prospect, he’s just another journeyman. This one happens to be in a 26 year old mold so he’s more appealing then most.
His career line in the minors is very Castillo-esque anyways. 286/329/346, about 25 steals a year.
You’re right. Lets just make roster moves and call ups just for the hell of it.
we need an infield utility man who has options, how hard is this to comprehend? we have no prospects above AA, this is not a youth movement this is a “well…hes better than Ahern and Abraham Nunez” move
No, you’re right. We should just leave roster spots open if we don’t have any phenoms to call up.
Lets bring up this guy because he’s better than Nunez … so he can sit on the bench too. I like your logic.
Anything younger than Castillo might be considered a youth movement. And don’t tell me he’s not that old. Age is just a number.
How hard is that to comprehend?
It’s not making roster moves for the hell of it. It’s playing your best 8 man lineup possible, and odds are that doesn’t include Argenis Reyes.
Toomanyuniforms … They DL’d the 2nd baseman … they called up a 2nd baseman. I don’t care if he’s not a phenom. Play him. If they want someone to sit on the bench then call up Nunez again so everyone can complain about that.
adropofvenom: OK … best lineup possible … and if Beltran gets the day off … what do you suggest?
I understand. But if the No. 1 guy goes down, you usually just go down the depth chart, and Easley is No. 2. The No. 3 guy comes up and slots for him. That way you maintain depth at the position.
Easley plays outfield too. That makes him utility. If Beltran is not playing … Easley should be in left.
I guess I can see that, and I’d love to see A-Rey (no . . . no, sorry, we won’t do that nickname) A. Reyes at second, but if Easley has to be in there, I’d rather him be at something closer to his natural position. I’d use Anderson or Aguila in left and Endy in CF. Personally, Reyes and Aguila would be my preference, but I can see hewing to the depth chart.
A. Reyes is hardly a journeyman. He was signed at age 20 by Cleveland in 2003. He began each succeeding season at a level higher than the last. This is his first season outside the Cleveland org.
A. Reyes impressed me as better than average during spring training. He had the misfortune to caddy a guy who just signed for 4 years.
What happened to Anderson Hernandez?
Um, he can’t hit.
A little confusing with two Reyes’ on the team. How about A R?
Reyes Squared! Keith is going to have some trouble….
I am certainly thrilled that they did not call up another corpse or a catcher, but this about as good a time as any to point out that Reyes has a .333 SLG pct, or 20 points lower than his OBP and that was while playing in the offensive friendly PCL.
like they say. beggars can’t be choosers.
beggars can wonder why they called up 2B at all with the multi talented underwhelming bat of Marlon Anderson on the team
Marlon is no longer a second baseman. That’s like wondering why the Braves need a back-up SS with Chipper on the team.
Well . . . not quite that bad, but it’s close.
my point being that the entire bench is useless with the exception of Castro, Easley and Chavez. Chavez can’t be on the bench because Alou can’t stay out of the nurses office, Castro can’t really be used of the bench because Manuel is just like Willie and would never dare use the best righted handed bat lest the game go eleventy billion innings, and now Easley is likely the 2B.
The only real value Reyes has in this callup is that he is not another catcher, not Nunez or some other scab.
No argument on that one. . ..
Why? He’s not a prospect, he’s just another journeyman. This one happens to be in a 26 year old mold so he’s more appealing then most.
His career line in the minors is very Castillo-esque anyways. 286/329/346, about 25 steals a year.
edit: Woops, put it in the wrong spot. Nevermind
Can’t someone explain why Raul Casanova and Robinson Cancel weren’t called up? This team never does anything right.
I like “Young Reyes” and “Old Reyes” . . . except that Argenis Reyes is actually older than Jose. . . .
That was in a Woody Allen movie…Love and Death…Old Nahampton was younger than Young Nahamton…or something like that.
how do you all feel about this trade:
carp and niese for nady
i dont know if they will accept this, but pittsburgh is also still in the wc race. they are only 1.5 gb the mets, and i think they feel they have a chance. but omar has to find a way to get nady asap.
Too much for Nady.
x2
Nady is under contract for at least another year, you are dreaming if you think Niese and Carp is too much for Nady, barring a miracle and poor market for Pittsburgh they should get far more than that.
yeah we may think its too much for Nady but the Pirates will think thats way too little for nady
I think these are the sorts of deals that have been bleeding our farm system dry. The older players with the “closing windows” are giving us next to nothing, anyway. No reason to further deplete the farm for that “one extra piece” that will turn us into an 84 win team. The Mets need to realize that, unless they can trade old for young, they’re going to have to go with what they’ve got.
with nady in the lineup, the mets can make a big run. and the thing about this team is that they need to win now, not later. and they have the money to make up for the depleted farm system unlike smaller teams like minnesota and florida. now, maybe we do not have to trade young prospects, maybe we can mix some low-level prospects along with mlb ready players for nady, but point being is that we need nady. and nady is only 29, so he is still young.
Why do the Mets “need to win now”? Delgado, Alou, Pedro, Castillo and El Duque are old? Perez a free agent? Not like they’re doing much of anything, anyway. The only “old” player that we might be missing in a couple years is Wagner. Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Santana, Church, and Maine are going to be around a while. There’s no rush.
all right, i got it.
oliver perez and nick evans for zack duke and xavier nady.
i think we are kind of getting the better end of the deal, but maybe the pirates will bite. who knows?
I don’t see how Nady is going to improve the rotation, or bullpen, or the infield defense, unless you have him playing 1B and not LF.
Plus there’s the fact that he is Xavier Nady, and is probably just as likely to regress back to his career norms, which aren’t bad but aren’t anything that’s going to put this team over the edge, as he is to continue playing the way he has.
the bullpen was bad last night but has been good recently and i feel they will continue to succeed along with the rotation. i think for this team to go over the top they need to get their offense going, and nady can do just that. also, replacing zack duke with oliver perez can be good because duke is much younger and has a better era. again, i don’t know if pitt will bite.
That’s a better deal for us, but I don’t see any reason why the pirates would ever consider it.
thats what i am saying, but deals even worse than this have fallen through. i mean, it is just an idea that will most likely not happen but you gotta try.
I tottally disagree with this assessment, that you have to try.
1. Try What? Why the heck would the Pirates want to trade Zach Duke ( a very young, and possibly very good pitcher) for a three month rental. OP would never sign with the Pirates, and I mean EVER..Scott Boras is his agent, case closed.
2. Xavier Nady is so overrated by Mets fans on this blog its ridiculous, he’s an average outfielder at best and not worth trading for anything significant.
why should i listen to you, you are from atlanta. your thoughts do not count.
Maybe because his post makes sense?
Because he clearly has a better understanding of trades than you do if you think Pittsburgh would even consider that deal.
That said, I hope both get a chance to play, as Easley is not an every day player, and I’d like to see a LF other than Chavez, who really should be on the bench as the 4th OFer.
If anyone understands the reference…
Think Major league 3 Back to the Minors
Argenis is a Castillo clone, but at least he has fresh legs. Chris Aguila really could be something, I think. He’s hit about .315 with decent pop in the minors since 2004, and never gotten an extended opportunity at the ML level. You could say the same thing about Scooch, but Aguila can play defense, too.
What bothers me is that it seems Castillo’s knees have been hurting all year long and thus he’s been playing diminished defense and hurting the team all year long. Why didn’t he go to the trainers and have himself put on the DL before now?
I never buy into this thing where people say players should suck it up and play hurt — not when it affects their defense or offense and can cost the team games. Fans have always said this with Beltran, but he needs to have healthy legs in order to play at his best.
Schoeneweis should have gone on the DL last year too. He just hurt the team by sticking around and playing hurt. They need to monitor these players more closely and put pressure on them to go on the DL when they are not close to 100%
He did not go on the DL because of his knees.
Also Beltran played like a beast in August and September offensively and defensively on two torn up knees.
I’m not talking about Beltran’s knees. I’m talking about all the times he’s had groin or hammy pulls and needed to sit out. Then fans would complain that he’s soft and that he needs to play hurt.
As for Beltran’s knees, whatever was ailing him last year was not as bad as the after effects of surgery. Because he was moving fine in the outfield all year long in 2007.
It’s been clear since the beginning of this year that Castillo’s knees were bothering him and his range was diminished. He should have been put on the DL to start out the season.
Beltran is not playing tonight.
again Castillo we DL due to hip, not knees
There was a post yesterday that his hip injury was a result of him overcompensating because of the pain in his knees. Kind of like how when Pedro injured his hip in 06 the overcompensating eventually led to the season ending shoulder injury.
This is def welcome news.
I don’t like to see players get hurt, but I feel Castillo was one of the players that was dragging this team down.
Luis, take as much time as you need.
Now this is from left field
New Reyes should lead off RH
Then Old Reyes Switcj
Then Wright Right
Beltran Switch
Chuch Left
Aguilla RH
Delgado LH
Catcher R or L dep on night
no.
Isn’t Argenis to Castro as Tortoise is to Hare?
has any1 seen the mets schedule in the upcoming weeks?? After the ASB huge 13 games and then August is as easy a sked as ever. I know this is the Mets but this is why you can not give up on this team. Just thought i would say it.
After going 2-6 against the Padres and the Giants I have a hard time getting excited about easy schedules.
You should see their Golf schedule in October, now that is EASY!
October? Try August.
no disrespect to Adam Rubin, but I knew this three hours ago. All you had to do was read the press notes ;-)
Andy Phillips was claimed off waivers by the Reds.
How long was he a Met? One game?
Pretty shrewd roster maneuvering by Omar.
sorry…4 games, 5 AB’s.
I’m not saying it’s a big loss, but, jeez, get a plan Omar.
Shrug.
Did it hurt to bring in Phillips? Nope.
Does it hurt to lose Phillips? Nope.
Who cares?
Did it help to bring in Phillips? Nope.
Why waste the roster spot for 5 days if you’re not going to use him?
Why bring him up at all if he can’t help the team?
Why carry 13 pitchers if your team needs hitting?
Why can’t Omar find ANYONE that can contribute to the offense?
Because there’s no one to find?
maybe you’re right…in which case, we’re in BIG trouble!
I guess the Reds are the shrewd ones, as they’re the team that waived him last month.
maybe we can get him back when he goes back on waivers :)
He was reclaimed by the Reds?
really?
i follow this team pretty intently and i never heard of this guy before today
Reyes to the 2nd power!
A Reyes looks to be someone with a little talent. I’m excited to see him get a chance. I would not expect him to replace Easley on a regular basis unless he really performs.
As for Aguila…don’t expect anything other than some defense.
And a stint with the team until Monday.
people are calling argenis reyes old…hes 25
Looking forward to seeing him tonight. I’ll be at the game. LETS GO METS!!!
Also, to all this Nady talk, I’ll say the same thing I’ve been saying for two years.
You all love him because his name is Xavier.
If he were Bob Nady, nobody would care about him at all.
He’s having a decent year, but he’s not really all that special a player. He’s certainly not the difference between this team succeeding and failing.
I agree. I really don’t understand the infatuation with him.
And he is a first half player. . . His average is about the same, but his HRs/Slugging take a huge hit the second half of the season.
yes, if he was Bob we’d never want at guy that…for the last two years has hit about .330 with RISP, .340 wRISP and two outs, .330 in tie games, .330 close and late, we need no one of that ilk, we’re good
What were his RISP numbers with the Mets?
I’ll answer that. Around .150, and close to the worst in baseball.
RISP is, more or less, luck. Who led the team in RISP in ‘06? Reyes. Who was right around the bottom of the team in RISP in ‘07? Reyes.
Also, Nady bat 313 last year with RISP. OPS of .829, which is good but not great. Bat .397 with RISP and 2 out, but only .290 late and close.
Also, his RISP came with a BABIP of .379, which I’m led to believe means his good numbers don’t count, or some similarly ridiculous conclusion. I’m not a fan of BABIP numbers for hitters, but I figure more information can’t hurt the discussion.
Nady’s a good player. There are just other guys who can give you similar production, and nobody here has brought them up.
Yeah it was luck when Reyes had a good year and hit .300 with RISP but it was just coincidence that in the year he struggled he hit badly with RISP.
hitting with RISP is not more or less luck, people have good years and bad years, but it is not blind luck.
and you are wrong about BABIP, the fact that it was higher in a situation were his ba was higher is just logic it would not be lower but his ba higher.
Who are the other players who can give similar production, and by similar I mean the same, not broad stroke similar in that they both happen to bat righty and occasionally get RBI
Reyes is having a good year now and he’s only hitting .222 with RISP. Although Nady is hitting a pretty high percentage of line drives so it’s not likely it’s just luck right now.
Perhaps, and not that this is a good reason to acquire a player, but every female Met fan I know loves Nady because of the way he looks as well as how he performed when he was here initially.
I don’t want the Mets to trade for him because his career splits show him to be a first half player, July is not the time to acquire him.
I HEARD BELTRAN IS NOT PLAYING TONIGHT!!! Any idea why?
A rest helped Wright a good deal.
Manager’s decision. I know, we’re not used to that sort of thing around here.
Rest maybe?
yeah, he’s resting. He looked bad striking out yesterday with RISP
Managers decision? well..that’s not likely to go well. We have a C manager. When do we get to rate him?
either gary/keith or kevin were said yesterday that jerry was talking before the game last night about resting beltran pre-phillies series.
Really? I think he’s kind of average looking.
Hey, even Utley seems to have a female following.
Dunn or Bay. Anything else is a waste of a trade. Unless it is for some other suprise guy that can hit 30hrs and bat close to .300.
Did you really mean to use ‘Dunn’ and ‘.300′ in the same paragraph?
I thought someone might read this and think that. No, of course not. I meant to say he or Bay, and if not one of them then someone else who fits that mold. Dunn = power, RBI, OBP. Not Average. Sorry for the confusion
Granted Dunn is younger, but if your’e looking for power and RBI, Delgado’s going 25-90+ isn’t he?
Touché.
Dunn’s advantage is in OBP.
This year he’s batting 223, and still managing a 388 OBP.
Delgado’s batting 236, with an OBP of 317.
And he’s slugging .512 compare to .430 by Delgado.
Okay, so Dunn’s advantages are OBP, slugging, power, hitting in bigger spots, and not hitting in to DPs (as pretty much every at bad he doesn’t get a hit or a walk, he’s striking out.)
I bet his BABIP is huge…
.250. Guess not. Well, all his hits are homers, which don’t count. Man, do I not get that stat.
It’s really useful for pitchers if you’re playing fantasy baseball since they’re more likely to stay around a league average.
But basically for hitters you hate to look at their line drive and fly ball percentages too. If they have a really high BABIP and a high fly ball percentages then more than likely they’re getting lucky and they’re going to come back down to earth. If they have a really high BABIP and a high line drive percentage, then they’re just really good. If they have a high line drive percentage and a low BABIP then they’re probably getting unlucky. If they have a low BABIP and a high fly ball percentage they probably just suck. And so on and so forth.
And then there’s guys like Dunn and Howard who swing at everything in the zone, hence the high k rate, and either hit it out of the park or hit fly balls.
Can Castillo be put on the 1,095 day disable list???
we need him.
what press notes were you talking about earlier? where can you find them?
Just google mlb press pass and it’ll be the first option. It’s on mlb.com somewhere. they release them every day for every team. Get all sorts of matchup information and all sorts of news. fun stuff.
i think easley will be getting the majority of starts, while a. reyes will probably pinch run and act as a defensive replacement. either way, im excited to see new blood on the roster
3 more years! 3 more years!
ugh.
Eh. Luis hasn’t been bad enough to ruin the team quite yet.
It pains me to think of what he’s gonna be doing in 3 years, but we’ll burn that bridge when we get to it.
Matt, how come I keep getting, “Log in to Reply” ?
You are not choking up.
Most people must be very excited to see Argenis at the MLB level.
i think the commentators are happy his first name isn’t Carlos. Then they’d really get confused
lol carlos reyes
youre right.
hey are you really ron? he says he goes on here?
you are ron arent you?
haha no, I wish. Just a Mets fan. I was just thinking Keith would be like “Reyes to Reyes to Delgado. I mean, Jose Reyes to Carlos Reyes to Carlos. I mean….oh crap…you take it, Gary”
I hate to say this but I’m kinda glad Castillo is finally on the 15 day DL. I know some people on here think castillo is not that bad and that he doesn’t hurt the team but to me, this opffense seems more productive when he doesn’t play. Granted, Castillo has basically been playing on two bumb knees (surgically repaired) which has caused him all sorts of other physical problems. But the point is, if he’s not 100% then he shouldn’t playing. Speed and his ability to beat out infield hits is a HUGE part of his game (probably the MAIN part of his game) because god forbid he ever hits a ball past the infield! So, if speed and infield hits are what he’s all about and obviously he can no longer do that (at so far this year)
then he’s not helping the team.
I’ve been defending him a good deal so far. One thing to remember is that despite looking like an old man, he runs fast when he has to. He’s run out a bunch of infield hits, and beaten out a lot of double plays. His OBP makes up for most of his offensive shortcomings, and his defense had been good.
That being said, his range at 2B has been bad lately, and he has a tendency to make big errors. That one ground ball that went over his glove and through his legs a couple days ago just looked like a terribly unlucky hop, but his D still has been weak.
Still, it comes down to one thing. They win when he’s not in the lineup.
That’s really all that matters.
sounds like you guys are all thinking Mets in 08.
just like the all-star vote.
no starters.
everybody is clearly thinking mets in 08.
rays in 08.
shut up.
