Poll: Mid-Season Grade for Ryan Church
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 3, 2008 12:37 pm

In the 54 for the Mets this season, Ryan Church is batting .310.

He is on pace to finish the season with roughly 25 HR, 20 doubles and 90 RBI, despite missing 30 full days due to injury between May and June.

Church is hitting .374 with runners on base, and has yet to make an error this season.

For what it’s worth, because, while it shouldn’t matter, it probably does, Lastings Milledge is batting .245 with seven HR and 32 RBI for the Nationals, though he is currently on the disabled list with a strained right groin.

What grade would you give Church's performace so far in 2008?

Considering he was an “afterthought” in the Milledge trade… he is absolutely graded as an “A”

  2. djstue says:

A+++++++++ No question, our MVP. Go Churchie!!

  3. Gina says:

    Really? D’s and F’s?

    • UpperDeckDweller says:

yeah who’s the d-bag that gave him an F? some Nats fan i presume…

  4. metties1 says:

seriously D’s and F’s. Do you hate people with concussions???

    • 4eyeJoe says:

i think it has more to do with the milledge lovers or something.

      • mex84 says:

        Trolls

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Little bit of everything. There are definitely some folks who thought Milledge would be Grady Sizemore by now because of some A-ball “PECOTAs” or other such nonsense, and got their egos tied up in his being a Met superstar, the trade being a disaster, etc. (Disclosure: I thought it was a bad trade at the time, even though I like Church and Schneider.) Milledge has time to improve, much like Mike Jacobs. That has little to do with Church, however. He’s exceeded all reasonable expectations, and deserves an “A” on that scale, a “B” relative to the rest of the league.

        • Gina says:

Milledge is only 22 isn’t he? I thought Jacobs was like 25 when we traded him, I’m pretty confident that Milledge will be much better than Jacobs.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Didn’t say he would have a ceiling similar to Jacobs, just that we might not hear from him for a while, and then watch him take off. Granted “take off” is strong for the one-dimensional Jacobs, but you get the idea.

  5. Mets17 says:

Its no fluke the Mets have been hitting the ball since Church has come back, he makes the lineup that much better.

  6. metsalltheway101 says:

    i have him an A.

  7. I voted F for Favorite… not really but it could work.

  8. metsalltheway101 says:

a little early, i know, but this should be tonights lineup.

    1. reyes- ss
    2. chavez- cf
    3. wright- 3b
    4. delgado- 3b
    5. church- rf
    6. easily- 2b
    7. anderson- lf
    8. schneider- c
    9. pelfrey- p

tell me what you all think

  9. raylyman78 says:

how can you vote Church a D or F. that is ridiculous

  10. SheaVendor says:

The 2 F’s came from Milledge and LoDuca

  11. metties1 says:

I think delgado has a tough enough time fielding 1b let alone 3b …even if he does share it with Wright

  12. molder says:

Anyone who but anything less than a B (I would give him A+ if I could) doesn’t like the Mets.

I loved Milledge and hate that they gave him away (I still think he has tons of raw talent and will be a great ballplayer in the future), and I still think Church plays with the most heart on the team, and is one of our best players. I hope we keep him for a LONG time.

    • Gina says:

I agree, except I don’t love Milledge I just think we sold at his lowest value.

    • LongJohnMaine says:

Hell yes. I liked L-Millz a lot too and I think he’s going to be a very good player and wish him the best in DC, but I love me the Church.

  13. SheaHeyKid24 says:

“A” all the way. normally a guy who misses a month would get downgraded, but even the play that knocked him out was a hustle play / hard slide that I can’t knock him for. I pray at the altar of Ryan Church.

  14. Church rocks, simply.

  15. metsalltheway101 says:

i just saw shelly duncan at an ihop in trenton.

  16. metties1 says:

Can we do a mid-season poll for Cow-Bell-Man?

I’d give him an A – for the biggest A-hole at Shea

Of course, I’m only kidding.. to all you cow-bell-man supporters out there…

    • guierllNO MOta says:

      AMEN….i hate that annoying %$^%^$

get over yourself dude, you run aroudn with a cowbell and the only one who can make a cowbell funny is will ferrell and christopher walken

  17. At the beginning of the year would you ever expect Church to get an A and Pedro, a D?

  18. garykeithron says:

anyone know when the all-star results will be announced?

    • raylyman78 says:

      sunday on tbs

    • metsflip says:

sunday at 2, tbs… Church should be in but I’m sure he won’t…

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

he would have had a shot if he hadnt been hurt….

        • metsflip says:

          True…

        • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

On the mets.com homepage, they’ve been running a poll — “who on the Mets most deserves to be in the All Star game?” (or words to that effect). The multiple choice answers were the usual suspects — Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Delgado (Delgado? Really?).. . and no Church. What’s that about?

  19. Knuckler says:

Church is one of those deals that keeps me from totally hating on Omar. A all the way! Is Beltran being rested today?

    • 4eyeJoe says:

i believe he will be rested today.

      • metsalltheway101 says:

beltran is definately going to be rested today. i am sure anderson or perhaps tatis will play left chavez in center, and church in right. it will be interesting to see who bats fourth tonight. i think it will be delgado.

  20. PAPDOG67 says:

How is a guy who hit 43 2B last year in a terrible line-up, and who finished in the top 30 in OPS amonst OFers considered an “afterthought?”

  21. hey i just started my own blog on the mets and i would really appreciate it if you guys could go on and tell me how im doing and what i could improve on.thanks just started this 2 days ago so.
    thanks..

  22. uppertank says:

wish he could have drove in wright last night….B hehe!

    • metsalltheway101 says:

would have if he was batting before beltran. that groundout definately would have brought wright home. i am still so pissed about last night. honestly, the mets need a big win today.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

They’ll probably get it. They are a .500 team. That’s what they do best. A win tonight will split the series. .500. It’s in the bag.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Well, in order for that to happen, he would have had to have gotten a base hit (since it was 2 outs). Beltran on the other hand, could have hit a fly ball or a groundout. Instead, he chose to strike out looking.

  23. metsalltheway101 says:

how do the mets lose these games? if this was 2 years ago and reyes and wright each had 3 hits and a triple, it would be a guarante win for the mets. now they can’t even win the friggin game. jeez, it’s been a long year and we still have about 2 1/2 months.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

2 years ago the bullpen was lights out. I think the record was 74-4 when leading after the 7th inning or something like that. Bradford, Heilman, Sanchez (pre-injury), Mota (lights out from roids), Feliciano, Oliver. They just got the job done. Not the case this year.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

      3months…sorry to make is longer

  24. GregB says:

He’s got to be the only player on the team to earn an A.

    How sad is that.

  25. meithk728 says:

I dont care how dumb this sounds…and it sounds dumb. But they need to sign Barry Bonds. Shea is already a circus the way these bums are playing, its already negative so you cant tell me Bonds will ruin the already scarred clubhouse. Plug Bonds into the middle of this lineup and wright and Beltran instantly see more fastballs. I dont care about his defense, which isn’t horrible, this team needs offense. I’m willing to sell my soul for a year to make an attempt at turning this thing around.

    • K-Hern says:

two wrongs do make a right

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

It still sounds dumb, Barry “the puke” would destroy my ability to watch and pull for this team.

There is a reason no other team in baseball has gone and gotten him.

No, I don’t like the way we are playing. Should we be better and less disfunctional. Of course. But Barry just cannot be the answer.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Can we put a stop to this crap? It’s not happening. Might as well pine for a Castillo-for-Quentin deal, which is far more likely.

  26. Bobby Bones in SC says:

This is the easiest vote for me. A big boy A.

Church as been much more than I expected. I thought it was a mistake when the deal was done, and I could not stand Milledge.

I hope Church stays with Mets for the foreseeable future.

  27. guierllNO MOta says:

Seriously, did people who voted F or D do so to be funny? or because they knew he’d get 90% B or higher? I mean sometimes I like to tell people that Delgado is better than Pujols just for the reaction.

But if anyone gave Church a D or F…and was serious about it, could you please inform the rest of us why? I just cant fathom it and I like to keep my mind open to something I may have missed.

  28. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Is it wrong for me to secretly wonder if Church could play first base?

I know, I know. And we’d miss his arm in RF, but still…

    • gomets6091 says:

how about instead of moving an awesome right fielder to first, why don’t we just get a real first basemen?

      • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Too simple. If it isn’t convoluted, it’s not a major league deal.

I wasn’t serious, really. But I do wonder what the Mets are going to do about 1B, because I really doubt we’re gonna get Teixeira (we will likely be outbid), and as much as I’d like to believe one of the AA or AAA kids will step in and become an all star, the buzz doesn’t seem to suggest that’s likely right now.

  29. JohnMilner says:

Church reminds me a bit of Kevin McReynolds. Solid bat and defense. Similar kind of personality too, from what I’ve seen of him.

  30. meithk728 says:

Ok, back to earth. Barry is a huge stretch. How about Kenny Lofton. We put him in left move Endy back to the bench, Alou back to the DL and we plug Kenny in the 2 slot. Why has nobody signed this guy, he’s a born winner.
And while we’re making moves – how about Castro starts the bulk of the games and schneider backs up. Im sorry but Schneider is horrible offensively and his defense is incredibly overrated. This team still needs changes and they need them now.

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

I like Schneider a lot. I think he’s a far better catcher (defensively) than Ramon, and I don’t get the “overrated” comments that keep coming up here.

I know Casto hits better, but only by 16 points (.271 with a .358 OBP, versus Schneider’s .255 and .333, respectively). That means Casto gets a hit 27% of the time, to Schneider’s 25.5%. You really think that’s going to make a big difference? Casto’s run production is marginally better, but the sample size here is pretty small, so I’m not sure any of this is statistically significant.

I like Schneider. I think he throws base stealers out as well or better than anyone in the league, I think he’s made some excellent plays at the plate, and I think he’s smart and calls a good game (and for this, we have to rely on his teammates, because there’s no really good way for a fan to know this). Castro is pretty good too, but I think Schneider has a clear edge defensively, and their hitting is not that different.

I know this is not a popular opinion here — everyone wants sluggers — but I just don’t think more Castro is going to make that much of a difference in our numbers.

And neither of them could run if their lives depended on it, by the way.

      • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

CastRo. CastRo. The R on my keyboard does not seem to be working today.

  31. meithk728 says:

NYP-Bos-nyp thats not bad idea, but how about alou at first.

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Yeah, until someone slides into first and takes his legs out.

Of course, if Church were there, somehow he’d manage to get kicked in the head…

    • metsalltheway101 says:

      that is a horrible idea.

  32. Bruce Boisclair says:

I think it says alot about him that everytime he comes back or tried to come back from the concussion he had multiple hit games. He’s a gamer.

I’m torn– bat him 2nd or 4th tonight? I’m leaning towards 4th, and put Easley second.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

no, chavez second, delgado fourth, and church fifth with easily sixth. mark my words, that will be the lineup tonight.
i just got off the phone with jerry and that is what he told me.

  33. guierllNO MOta says:

Church gets on base more, and while he is an RBI guy, Easily is too, actualyl doesnt matter, everyone this week has been driving in runs except beltran

  34. gbaked says:

Church should be the captain of this team.

Who cares if this is his first season with the club. Who cares if he is not the “best” player.

Put the C on his jersey.

  35. Churchie gets an A in my book.

  36. TenTonHammer says:

Doesnt Milledge have to actually show that he’s growing as a player before we can continue to pine for his potential?

  37. Can I Get A Witness says:

So far there are a total of 55 d-bags. Grade of C, D or F is crap. Get a life.
