postGame: Mets 11 Cardinals 1
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 3, 2008 11:18 pm

The Mets (42–43) beat up on the Cardinals (49–38) by the score of 11 to 1 in St. Louis tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

However, in case you missed it, know that, while Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado each had three RBI, and the name of the game tonight was Mike Pelfrey, who let up just six hits and one run, while striking out six, through seven innings of work.  He kept the ball away, he kept it down, he mixed up his pitches, and made several hitters, including Albert Pujols, look foolish.  He is finally throwing strikes, not messing around, and getting the job done.

In his last seven starts, Pelfrey is 4–0 with a 3.05 ERA, during which the Mets are 6–1.

What’s more, Pelfrey drove in the first run of his career, with an RBI single in the third, which basically broke the game open.

The Mets begin a four-game series tomorrow with the Phillies in Citizen’s Bank Park starting at 7:05 pm, with Johan Santana (7-7, 3.01 ERA) taking on J.A. Happ, who will be making his first start of the season.

its amazing how we can go 0-5 in santanas starts and 6-1 in pelfreys last 7.

    unbelieveable

    • Two-By-Four says:

Santana faces the other teams top pitcher that limit our offense, Pelfrey does not. But, of course there was a time when Pelfrey received no run support. So who the heck knows why. :)

      • EliPorter says:

no excuse tomorrow- JA happ is a scrub

        • patrick says:

the Mets hitters are outstanding vs. Scrubs, keep in mind he beat down the Diamondbacks and big mouth Wagner barfed that one up, so…there are plenty of opportunities for excuses.

  2. amazin92 says:

Pelfrey is lookin like the guy we drafted… Atta boy

    • EliPorter says:

throw the e.r.a, wins, strikeouts, and innings out the window. how do i know that pelfrey has arrived? hes the anti-ollie. the kid has so much poise out there on the mound. whether he has a 1-0 lead or a 9-0 lead, he is cool and confident. i noticed this in the fox saturday game vs the dodgers (beltrans game tying shot in the 8th) when he worked his way into and out of jams. i hate to say this, but he reminds me of andy pettite on the mound.

      • EliPorter says:

(not in terms of stuff, but in how he handles himself on the mound)

      • Ceetar says:

Your Pettite comparison fails tonight, give the score of that game.

However I agree, even in 2006, I felt the biggest issue Pelfrey had was the lack of poise and confidence.

  3. metsflip says:

awesome sick game… Should be good momentum for next game against the phils… I’m sure David might get a day off… Looking forward to seeing the stars and stripes cap on the mets tommorow…

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Game to game momentum does not apply to this team. Tomorrow’s momentum will have to come from Santana.

      • patrick says:

there is an ole saying in baseball, momentum is as good as the next days starting pitcher…

    • SuicideWatch says:

      NO OFF DAYS VERSUS PHILLY!!

  4. kd bart says:

It’s nice to stop watching a game closely in the 5th because you know it is won.

  5. Genesis Does says:

Pelfrey, Maine and pray for rain

  6. TenTonHammer says:

Big Pelf is a rock lately. Looks more and more like Brandon Webb every start.

Young pitchers only get better when they accumulate innings pitched. Everybody who wanted to get rid of him looks stupid now.

  7. Dennis A says:

Marlon is finally over the Mendoza line!

  8. dominicanboy08 says:

jerry manuel vs charlie manuel tomorrow..it kind of weird for me to see “manuel” as a last name. hispanics only use manuel as a first name..lol anyway, good game today and I hope we at least take 3 out of 4 in philly lets go mets!!!!

  9. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

    Big Pelf, getting it done!

I was out and about today and listened to most of the game on the radio. God help me, but I think Wayne Hagin is starting to grow on me. And not just because they love him in St. Louis. I loved how in the first inning, he got on Delgado for swinging at crap pitches. His voice can sound a little affected at times, and that’s a bit annoying, but I think the guy may actually know his baseball.

    • KinersKornerman says:

Oh no. The Wayne Hagin Cult has captured another unsuspecting fan. Where are you? We will come get you. DO NOT drink any Kool Aid.

      • Xavier22 says:

I’m just curious, what do you have against Wayne Hagin? I was on the fence about him at first but now I think he and Howie have developed a decent rapport over time and he can provide some interesting commentary.

    • jamie says:

in the first inning, he had a pretty good at bat. he swung at the first two against a guy he’s never seen before, but then laid off the rest to drive in a run. I guess my point is: screw wayne hagin. and the cardinals, too.

      • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

        Heh. Struck a nerve, did I? ;)

I dunno. He’s no Gary/Keith/Ron, but he’s not dumb, and he’s not afraid to speak his mind, and I do like that. It’s a pretty New York attitude for somebody who’s from somewhere else.

As to Delgado’s first at bat, I think Hagin’s point (and I was listening on the radio, so I admit my “view” of this may have been skewed somewhat by his reporting) was that Delgado just started swinging blindly without getting a look at what he was being thrown. Or without thinking much about what the batters before him were thrown. He swung the bat at a couple of really bad pitches before he settled down and started actually thinkng about what he was being dealt. You can argue that Carlos was being aggressive, but I think swinging at the first pitch, particularly the first pitch at your first at bat, is often a pretty bad move.

I dunno, I just liked that he was calling Delgado out on something, and maybe that’s because I’m rather unhappy and frustrated with Carlos at the moment, and it’s nice to hear someone else voicing that.

On the other hand, if you put Wayne Hagin — or me — up against Boggs (or Guillermo Mota, for that matter), chances are pretty good we’d look pretty stupid too, so it’s all a bit relative, I guess.

I’ll stay clear of the Kool-Aid, I promise. But I do like Hagin a bit more than I did at the beginning of the year, and certainly more than I liked McCarthy.

  10. 1. Good start, liked the boxscore and brief game recaps.

      2. You could offer more personal opinions to make it different than other websites and blogs.

      3. Don’t take any unconstructive criticism personally. There are lots of trolls out there.

    • freubr01 says:

the boxscores are definitely good…you may want to spell check yourself a little bit…and also try to put more of the highlights like the castro hit in there…good luck

  11. Gina says:

I want to be excited but they’ve fooled me too many times this season already. I’ll breathe easier once we’re a game above .500.

    • KinersKornerman says:

It’s the night before the 4th of July and a 3 day weekend. Go ahead, and be excited.

      • Gina says:

I’m on summer vacation, everyday’s a weekend for me. Which is why I have so much time to lament about the mets.

  12. amazin82 says:

We’re gonna go 3-1 against the Phils and then get swept by the Giants. How I wish this weren’t true but it’s gonna happen.

  13. MeesesGlokmah says:

Big Pelf is our Ace! Hopefully the Mets can score a bunch against the Phillies. Should have saved some runs for tomorrow so Santana can break past the 7 wins barrier!

  14. KinersKornerman says:

Loved the Reyes-Reyes DP combo tonite that closed out the game. .

  15. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I’ve been saying for the past year that Pelfrey was wasting too much time monkeying around with changeups, sliders, and pressuring himself to throw them for strikes, etc. His fastball is an A+ pitch, and he has 2 of them. It’s about time he simply concentrated on throwing those fastballs and blowing people away and occasionally mixing in the offspeed stuff just for show. Can’t throw the offspeed stuff for strikes? Who cares?

  16. ditas says:

Tomorrow we will see if we got the ace we were looking for in Santana. Pitching the first game of a four game series against the first place Phillies, I expect him to go out there and be lights out. And I don’t mean 6 innings 2 runs, I mean 8 innings of dominant pitching.

We have to take advantage that we will not be facing Hamels in this series and that we are facing a pitcher that is making only his second major league start in the first game tomorrow night. And luckily for us his first start was last year against the Mets so the team has seen him before.

    • KinersKornerman says:

Santana will hit a home run tomorrow. Remember that you heard it here first.

      • jamie says:

but will that make it 2-7 phils, or 5-4 mets?

        • X-Man says:

I’ve been in Santana’s corner all year even when the consensus on here by many is that he has not lived up to his ‘ACE” tag. Well, I also think tomorrow all the pressure is squarely on him now to be that “Ace” we paid 138M for. This is the type of game he’s here to win. He needs to come up big time tomorrow and just shot that Phillie offense down completely. His good grace period is just about up.

Good to see the Mets offense FINALLY resembling what we all thought they were capable of at the start of the season. Granted, they’ve been beating up on No-Names but that also is a breath of fresh air since their track record against rookie pitchers has not been that great. Good teams beat up on pitchers they should and the Mets certainly seem to have woken up from that season long slumber at the plate. Citizen’s Bank Park should be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Pitching match-ups all favor the Mets and if they can score 7 & 11 runs in St. louis, they should be able score10 & 15 in Phillie. I have a hunch the Phillies don’t know what’s in store for them this weekend and the Mets look ready to take 3 of 4.

      • X-Man says:

I will remember, I also think he will hit one but if he does, the credit of saying it first will all go to you.

  17. lil pelf says:

i hope this kid reyes is the real deal. if we could have two reyes’ hit 300 and speed around the bases at the top of our order, and form a lethal reyes to reyes double play combination, id be estatic. if four out of the five of david, ryan, carlos, carlos, and ;;moises;; (semicolons are for injury protection) can be healthy and hitting at the same time, we have a potentially lethal lineup.
great to see pelfrey start to establish himself, i hope pedro and johan step up their game to what they are capable of this weekend in philli. i also love the heilman, duaner, wagner 7, 8, 9 combination. lets go take three out of four.

    • X-Man says:

On paper, this line-up has always been ‘Potentialy Lethal” but the problem of course is that we’ve never really seen it go from paper to reality because of injuries.

      Reyes SS
      Easley 2B
      Beltran CF
      Wright 3B
      Church RF
      Alou LF
      Delgado 1B
      castro C
      Pitcher

That’s the most “Offensive” line-up they can throw out there once Alou is back. For the first 7 innings or so this line-up should be able to put up some crooked numbers on the board. You can play around with the batting order and move up delgado if you want or inter-change Beltran and D-Wright.

Chavez and A. Reyes would be the defensive replacements in the eight and ninth. Play Schneider against Righties and Castro against lefties.

Marlon Anderson & Tatis as your primary rightie/leftie pinch hitters.

      • lil pelf says:

i think beltran is maybe the biggest x factor of all in the lineup. for some reason it just feels like the team is hitting if beltran is hitting. its a shame delgado is only great in small samples these days because a wright, ‘06 delgado, church 5, 6, 7 would be amazing. what do you think of bringing bonds’ on base/slugging percentage to the team. say what you want about him as a person, hes the greatest homerun hitter of all time and hes available at the league minimun salary.

  18. TenTonHammer says:

The pitching matchups don’t necessarily favor the Mets. They struggle more often than not against scrubs and call-ups. And of course Adam Eaton is a Met-Killer.

And I’m already looking forward to Johan Santana getting ripped apart if he doesn’t throw a no-hitter tomorrow. Fun times with some of you.

    • CitizenSnips says:

You mean how dispite when he gives up maybe MAX 3-4 runs the offense can’t produce thus leading to the other posters complaining?

    • sincekindergarten says:

The Mets have seen J.A. Happ before–his other MLB start was against the Mets a little over a year ago.

  19. bvaz says:

same old story. good win, bad loss, a loss that should have been a win, good win.
in reality, if they had sanchez healthy, they probably take 3 of 4 in st louis which is encouraging but they still need to translate encouragement into wins.
the signs are there. pelfrey is pitching great. perez had a good start. maine has been what maine is. johan’s performances should turn into wins soon. pedro is still a question mark.

this team can turn it around but they can’t wait too long to do it. I know the fans want the Mets to take the series in philly, but if they leave st. louis and philly with a 4-4 record, I’m not overly disappointed. they won’t win or lose the division in this weekend series.

  20. metsfan1 says:

I was happy to see the Mets battle to get the last game of the series after blowing game 3. The thought that we could have taken 3 against the Wild Card leader is frustrating because that could have been a nice 2 game pickup with the chance to pickup ground against the Phillies.

We need to play well down in Philly. At worst we need 2 and hopefully 3. Santana has not pitched lights out this year but hasn’t been awful lately either. He is going up against a AAA pitcher. I want to see the Mets light this guy up. Hopefully giving Beltran a day off will help like it did for Wright and Delgado.

  21. LIMetfan74 says:

Time for Santana to earn his money. He needs a well pitched game today I dont want to hear anymore excuses. This is what he was brought here for. Time to put up or shut up!

  22. uppertank says:

    so close to 500!

  23. MH says:

There was a period of several games over which Santana’s ERA was around 2.00 and he was losing. “Time to put up of shut up?” Time for some run support when he’s pitching.

  24. stickguy says:

Phils and Mets both get lucky. They are each missing the other teams Ace!

  25. metsfan42793 says:

IF THE METS ONLY WON ON WEDNESDAY WE WOULD BE .500. URGGGGGGGGGGG. hopefully we sweep the phillies

  26. MH says:

“…while Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado each had three RBI, and the name of the game tonight was Mike Pelfrey, who let up just six hits and one run, while striking out six, through seven innings of work…”

“The name of the game” is the offense clicked AND Pelfrey pitched well…Why downplay an important element of the win? The game was over very early on because of the offense. Pelfrey sealed the deal with his pitching. A very good TEAM win. Reyes broke the game open with his triple…no mention that he tied Mookie for most triples as a Met? The kid is on a tremendous role on offense…but the next error he makes or show of frustration will be sure to draw 200 comments.

  27. MetsFan4Decades says:

You have got to be kidding…..

  28. Genesis Does says:

    Comment by PositiveFan

The Offense is finally clicking for more then 1 game.

If Troy Glaus didnt hit 2 shots so hihgh and far, we win the series. But he did muscle those balls clear out of the park, and he creamed it inches out of Endy’s reach, so we settle for a tie.

  29. m00kie says:

you care, or you wouldn’t be here.

  30. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Yeah, but there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a good victory. If you’re going to take the team to task every time they make a stupid mistake, then you ought to give them props when they do things right. And today, they did things right.

I don’t think anyone’s celebrating our certain presence in the post season just yet, but if you can’t enjoy a blowout, what’s the point?

The Mets played a great game today, and I’m happy for them. Tomorrow is tomorrow. Today was fun.

  31. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Not necessarily. If we won yesterday, then maybe the Cards approach this game differently as do the Mets, and maybe the Cards win. You never know.
