    better win today

  2. Knuckler says:

    What’s wrong with the weather?

  3. Gasface77 says:

“the Mets (41-43) continue their four-game series against the Cardinals (49-37)…”

I remember when we were the “team to beat” (spring training) and the Cardinals were an after thought. Who would have thunk it.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

thunk???????????????please tell me that is a joke.

      • Gasface77 says:

Not quite sure what the joke is. Maybe you think “thunk” is not a word. I could have said “thought,” but I thought “thunk” sounded funnier.

In fact, “thunk” can be used as a past participle of “think,” so what exactly is the problem here? Does the fact that I used “thunk” bother you that much or was it my point?

      • Gasface77 says:

Since we are on critiquing grammar and spelling, I hope you realize that only one ? is needed at the end of a sentence. Also, the first letter of every sentence should be capitalized.

I am done with this silliness so back to baseball.

  4. youknowwhatimsayin says:

THIS is why I have grown to really dislike this organization. Other than perhaps they are not there yet (and I see that they did arrive before the game), what other valid reason is there to call people up and then NOT play them.

Marlon Anderson??? Give me a break… and you know that neither Aguila or A.Reyes will play in the Phils series, so that means these guys rot for at least 5 days. The Mets are like a bad sitcom. You laugh only because it is so stupid.

Easley should be in LF. A. Reyes at 2B.

    • the Straw says:

Lets not go crazy over Argentis and Aguila. This is not the mets bringing up Fernando martinez here. These guys are not “prospects”. they are just replacement parts. They should not be starting in major league lineups.

      • youknowwhatimsayin says:

Neither should Marlon Anderson or Endy Chavez, but there they are, and this Mets fan is tired of seeing what they CAN’T do.

Try someone else for a change.

        • NPerez says:

Argenis & Aguila will never in a trillion years be regarded in the same way that Endy or Marlon are. Sure, we could try them out, but the likely result would be a less productive day coming from those positions, so what would we really be getting at?

        • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Endy Chavez is one of few premiere defensive outfielders in the majors. No he is not that great of a hitter, but there are a bunch of teams who would love to have Endy on their roster.

        • Gina says:

We’d at least be trying something new. It’s not like what we’re doing now is working either.

        • youknowwhatimsayin says:

          My point exactly.

  5. mouserdz says:

    Lets go Metsos!

  6. LIMetfan74 says:

    Already rain delayed start

  7. Church4prez says:

    NO WAY!!!

  8. LIMetfan74 says:

Might not start it for another hour I would guess

  9. metsalltheway101 says:

please do not put beer money during the break. i mean, the chick is hot but the show sucks.

  10. dominicanboy08 says:

where is argenis reyes? he should be playing second base. marlon anderson in LF? easly should be playing LF..CMON!!

  11. the kooz says:

How about some optimism here? This is baseball! Its a beautiful game and we’re only 4.5 games out with three months to play.

    CMON BIG PELF!!

    LETS GO METS!

    • catcher4life says:

I agree with you completely… Anyone else excited by the Pedro interview they just showed. He is one of the greats and he certainly isn’t a coward I think he will turn his season around. I STILL BELIEVE

      Let’s Go Mets!

ps- stop hoping for a rain out, if you don’t want to watch the game, then change the channel

  12. SantanaCYYOung says:

hoping for a rain out, maybe they’ll make it up next year

  13. Church4prez says:

    CALLS NEXT!!!

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

Caller: Keith, how come the mets suck so much?

      Keith: Ah, next caller please.

Next Caller: Gary, how come the mets haven’t taken off since the firing Wille Randolph?

Gary: Maybe it wasn’t his fault after all!

    • dr jones says:

glad a rbi base hit is unfortunate KEITH.

  14. garykeithron says:

I was watching the 1986 Mets story on SNY. Wow, what a difference in attitude between that team and this year’s. Stark contrast. This team is asleep comparatively

  15. MetsFan4Decades says:

Tarp on, tarp off. Tarp on, tarp off…
Last I heard, the tarp, which was just put on a second time, is coming off again.
Booth taking fans phone calls. Brave souls…..

  16. dominicanboy08 says:

I dont understand why some mets fans here are always putting the mets down, I mean if you dont like the team, just root for another one. like someone said in an early post, we are 4.5 out of first place with 3 months to play. we have to believe!!!!

    • the kooz says:

      Amen dominicanboy!

And in response to an earlier post by catcher4, saw the interview as well. I admit I didnt want Pedro to come to the Mets but I can’t knock his attitude. Never doubted his desire to win though….

      • Dafatone80 says:

For everyone doubting this team’s heart, at least you know Pedro’s gonna go out there and give it his all.

If he turns it around, awesome. If he doesn’t, maybe this will work as an argument against “heart” being the problem with this team.

      • SantanaCYYOung says:

To ease the pain man. I know I don’t like talking bad about the mets, but it helps me cope with the expectations of last year and the eventual collapse. this year’s expectations and the team being where it is.

you say 4.5 back, but the mets haven’t come back from 3 down all year in a single game. don’t you think that might correlate in the season? since they can’t make up a simple 3 run defecit that they can make up an even 3 game defecit?

i try to stay hopeful, that’s why i stayed up till midnight last night to watch that disaster.

        • Dafatone80 says:

They fought back last night, you gotta give ‘em that. And the mets were 7 or 7.5 out a couple weeks ago.

Things do look grim, no one’s denying that. But strange things have happened. I mean, the Yankees came back from 125 games out last year to make a race of it.

And if things don’t work out, really, this isn’t the worst mets team ever, or close to it. This isn’t even the most depressing team this decade. 2002 was worse in my opinion.

And nothing can top the way the ‘99 season ended. Nothing.

So yeah, the advantage of being a Mets fan? There’s always a more crushing memory to look back on.

        • SantanaCYYOung says:

You think about the past with this Mets team, i don’t want to, i want to think about today, this weekend, this season…1999 was 9 years ago! I understand your point, but its been 22 years since a championship, 22 freakin years man, that’s a long time.

I mean you say that if things don’t work out that this isn’t the worst Mets team this decade, is that what this team is striving for? to not be worse that the 02 Mets? come on, i’m tired of waiting

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

hahaha – ‘125 games out last year’. Good one. I hate the Yankees.

I’m with you on our comments. I have to watch until the last pitch, the last play. ‘It ain’t over until it’s over’. That refers to any given game and the season as well.

  17. garykeithron says:

oh no, please no. I thought they were taking calls. Beer money

  18. Dafatone80 says:

Argenis hit about 300 in AAA, and 358 against lefties. Meaning that he kinda sucks against righties.

Which is a shame, because against lefties, I want Easley’s bat in there. Oh well.

Anyway, Marlon gets the nod over Argenis against righties, I suppose.

Also, we have no idea what his glove is like.

  19. EliPorter says:

chris carlin is the bald, fat, ugly version of david wright

  20. mavicario says:

This show is so bad and they show the same 3 episodes of it

    • Gasface77 says:

That’s because they probably only filmed three episodes knowing it was going to be that bad. They filmed it specifically for the purpose of having additional “rain delay” material.

  21. the kooz says:

Mets match up well with the Phils this weekend though with Hamels pitching as we speak (2-0 Phils vs the Braves, bot 6th). We’ll take advantage this weekend. Even if we split that series we’re still in ok shape. Gotta believe….

  22. NCMetsGuy says:

I actually kinda like the lineup considering Beltan is sitting. Anderson needs some AB’s to prove he is still worth carrying. It’s a RHP starting so Anderson gets the call in LF because Endy is already in. If it was a LHP then you have a lot more options.

  23. the kooz says:

And speaking of the phils, its weird to hear Tom McCarthy do the games for the Phillies tv broadcasts. I thought he did a great job on the FAN last year replacing Gary Cohen…..

    • Gasface77 says:

I liked McCarthy a lot last year. A lot of fans did not appreciate him and had a lot of complaints. Now those same fans are wishing he were back. Hagin is almost unbearable. I tried to like him, but I can’t. KKKISSSSS ITTTTTT GOOOODBYYYYE!

      • Dafatone80 says:

I liked Hagin, until I realized he was rooting against the Mets, every single game.

        • EliPorter says:

dont forget about how his classic “adios” home run call with the horrid spanish accent

    • garykeithron says:

I’m going to be in the poconos this wkend – do you know what channel the games should be on?

      • batsinthepelfrey says:

        beautiful mount airy lodge?

enkoy the giant champagne glass bath tubs

  24. catcher4life says:

This show is killing me… and I’m pretty sure these are the easiest Mets questions ever

  25. catcher4life says:

Could it be? Are the Mets going to play baseball tonight? YES! Let’s get this game going!

  26. the kooz says:

Agree gasface. But Hagin is growing on me as of late believe it or not.

I think we’re mostly distraught because we want to see the club take a big lead early in the season and dominate and play solid ball. But they havent done so. But the reality is there’s still 1/2 a season left and I hate to belabor the point, but hey, its still less than 5 games.

  27. Dafatone80 says:

I have a somewhat ridiculous suggestion. What about looking into getting Matt Stairs?

He’s lefthanded, which is a bit of a shame, but he plays corner OF and a bit of 1st. He is really old, and I’ll be honest that I don’t quite know how his glove is these days.

He’d come cheap, and he’d be a marked offensive improvement over Marlon/Tatis in left.

    • NCMetsGuy says:

I don’t know how cheap he would be. A lot of AL teams will be looking for a guy just like him down the stretch.

      • Dafatone80 says:

If he’s too much, we pass. Would be an upgrade, if he can field corner OF at all.

You’re probably right. Though I’d rather see the Mets go after a lower-priced veteran like Stairs than trade good prospects for a younger OF like Nady.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

I agree, the only way you bring in Nady or Dunn is with lower tier prospects and that is not going to happen. Focus on salary dumps is the way to go. Guys like Melvin Mora, Ibanez, Winn, etc.

  28. the kooz says:

    Hey Matt-

Any update on which Mets are going to the All Star game? Oh wait…….lol

  29. the kooz says:

A lead for Big Pelf would be nice……

  30. NCMetsGuy says:

When Beltran comes back it should be Wright, Church, Beltran, Alou, Delgado.

  31. garykeithron says:

all right, all the facial hair on everyone is getting silly now

    • jcervone7 says:

Life is better with facial hair. I grew a beard a little while back, best thing I’ve ever done. I urge all men to do the same.

      • garykeithron says:

better if it’s groomed facial hair, versus the forests everyone seems to be growing

  32. catcher4life says:

Come on Delgado, keep this road trip hitting trend going!

  33. EliPorter says:

“carlos is on a fishing expedition”- keith

  34. MetsFan4Decades says:

Come on, this kid is not throwing strikes. Just proved that with the last two batters. So what the heck is Delgado swinging at?????

  35. catcher4life says:

I think someone just explained to Carlos what the strike zone is.

  36. Dafatone80 says:

    That’ll do, Delgado.

  37. EliPorter says:

two really horrid swings and misses to start the at bat, but delgado recovered and at least pushed one in

  38. NCMetsGuy says:

It looked like Delgado was getting angry that the guy would not throw a strike.

  39. Gina says:

I think Pelfrey’s going to look good tonight.

  40. catcher4life says:

I can live with that Easley

  41. EliPorter says:

also, i hate to dissect the manuel’s lineup decisions. shouldnt he have batted church 3rd and wright cleanup? i think each of those hitters are more appropriate in those roles. at the very least, we’d separate the two lefties in church and delgado.

by the way, how many bats have been shattered these last two games?

    • catcher4life says:

At least 10 bats I would think

      • jcervone7 says:

I know maple bats are starting to be used this year, it seems like they shatter far more often. Adam Dunn swore off them the other day, said he was going back to ash bats.

    • NCMetsGuy says:

Wright is still our best hitter so he should stay in 3rd. Besides who cares about spliting up LH hitters against a RHP?
Wright is not a clean up hitter and should not be messed with. Let Church hit there and Beltran hit 2nd or 5th.

  42. MetsFan4Decades says:

Sacrifice fly and some good luck. 2 runs across already. Keep it going, Marlon.

  43. dr jones says:

rbi base hits are not unfortunate Keith

  44. catcher4life says:

    seeing eye ball

  45. NCMetsGuy says:

LOL, do we even have a real hit yet?

    • catcher4life says:

Nope, but I don’t really care as long as we have some runs

    • Dafatone80 says:

      Endy’s was close…

Easley’s wasn’t terrible, either. If the pitcher doesn’t touch that, it could get through the middle.

      Still, I’ll take it.

      • NCMetsGuy says:

No doubt after all the hard hit balls that we have been robbed on this season we are still due about 100 more of those type.

        • Dafatone80 says:

This is why I’m not giving up on the season quite yet. We’ve gotten horrifically unlucky, and most of our lineup has had a bad first half. Remember, most of our lineup was on fire last second half, especially in September.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

I agree, there is always a CHANCE that Alou comes back healthy.
Reyes, Beltran, Wright, Church, Alou, Delgado, Castro, Easley/Castillo would not be a bad lineup at all.

        • Doctork1 says:

Why would anyone “GIVE UP ON THE SEASON”?

This team, however you feel about it, is still within striking distance of first place.

  46. dominicanboy08 says:

anyone think, if given a full season, damon easley may hit 18 HRS with 70-80 RBI?

    • NCMetsGuy says:

I don’t think he would hold up an entire season and his defense would not allow him to be an everyday 2nd baseman but I love him on our bench.

  47. dr jones says:

Keith Hernandez showing his true colors tonight.

After Easley got the RBI base hit,, Keith called it unfortunate that the Cardinals pitcher didn’t make the play

    • catcher4life says:

Just wait, I think Keith might pull out his fur coat tonight

      • EliPorter says:

give me a break. keith is always pretty neutral.

keith is going to be loyal to those who are loyal to him. of the top 3 or 4 popular mets of all time, keith is up there (with seaver and piazza).. is hernandez even in the cardinals fans’ top 10?

        • gipper82475 says:

Seriously, I’ll take the straight comments from Keith Ron and gary over the homers and hacks on so many other broadcast teams.

Those of you who still live in NY and get SNY every night even on road games (rather than getting stuck with Cards, D’Backs, Nats and Fish announcers – to name some of the worst) have no idea how fortunate you are!

  48. Dafatone80 says:

Wow, did that pitch to Pujols look nasty.

  49. MetsFan4Decades says:

Boy, Big Pelf looking sharp so far tonight.

  50. dominicanboy08 says:

    what a sinker by pelf..striking out pujols!!.wow

  51. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Big Pelf does look good. I still think when he learns how to pitch he will be one of the better pitchers on the staff, if not in the NL. The question is,..Can he learn how to pitch?

    • Dafatone80 says:

He’s been pretty solid for about 6 straight starts, more or less. If he keeps up that performance, that’ll be great.

I think mixing in the 4-seamer helps. He doesn’t quite have the control on the sinker to throw it as often as he had been.

  52. Dafatone80 says:

Anyone watching mlb.tv as entertained as I was by that Ankiel / Beltran comparison?

“I think I’d take Ankiel, he’s got more playing time left in him…”

“Turns out Ankiel and Beltran are only two years apart…”

“Wait a minute, Ankiel’s actually two years older.”

  53. catcher4life says:

So Keith and Gary, if we want to be a good team, shouldn’t we play the best. How else will we succeed? Bring on Cole Hamels, and if we loose well than we learn from it.

  54. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Need to see a few more pitches boys. What did Boggs throw 6-7 pitches?

  55. Dafatone80 says:

That 0-2 pitch to Ludwick looked good. Ump’s had a small zone, I guess.

  56. EliPorter says:

yadier molina has done a lot of good things for the mets in the last 2.5 years. i think its time someone on our staff returns the favor with a nice fastball near the head

  57. catcher4life says:

Yesterday, Gary and Keith talked about how if Pujols gets his 300th homerun this season he would join Ralph Kiner for being one of the only people to ever hit 300 in 8 seasons. Well here’s my question… Where has Ralph been this season, am I losing it or has he not been on the air in a while? Anyone know

  58. EliPorter says:

what a frickin play by reyes

  59. MetsFan4Decades says:

hahaha – someone missed a sign there. Nice play, Jose.

  60. NCMetsGuy says:

Damn Church may turn me bisexual.

  61. catcher4life says:

Why would you have the pitcher doing a hit and run, isn’t it more likely that Molina missed the sign?

  62. NCMetsGuy says:

How is this guy so scared of Delgado? Does he only get ESPN Classic or something?

  63. SantanaCYYOung says:

    come on blastro

  64. dominicanboy08 says:

its amazing that since luis castillo is not playing, the offense seems alive!!

    • NCMetsGuy says:

Did a little studying about this topic a few weeks ago. At that time we actually averaged more runs with Castillo in. Remember he is leading the team in BARISP and BARISP/2Out.

      • Dafatone80 says:

It could just be a coincidence.

Everyone else seems to hit better without Castillo in the lineup.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Again, average runs scored as of a couple of weeks ago was more with Castillo in.

        • metsalltheway101 says:

i think church has somthing to do with it.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Bingo, Church is much much more important to the lineup than Castillo is. Castillo is a role player, nothing to get excited or upset about. He gets on base so guys like Church can be a star.

  65. Bobby Bones in SC says:

MArlon was lucky he did not hit that ball harder. Dangit!

  66. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Come on Pelfrey. Help yourself out bud.

  67. SantanaCYYOung says:

    omfg!

  68. NCMetsGuy says:

Best way Pelfrey can help himself is to take 3 straight pitches.

  69. dominicanboy08 says:

    pelfrey!!!!!

  70. Bobby Bones in SC says:

    WoooooooooHooooooooo

  71. EliPorter says:

lets go pelf- i love cohens creepiness… “ok you can smile… go ahead, you can smile”

  72. MetsFan4Decades says:

HAHAHAHA – Big Pelf comes through !!!
An actual base hit to the outfield with runners in scoring position.

  73. SantanaCYYOung says:

    finally!!!!

  74. Bobby Bones in SC says:

    Blowout BABY!

  75. Dafatone80 says:

Ankiel took a terrible route on that. Went over, then straight back.

    I’m glad we have Carlos.

    • m00kie says:

Ankiel’s shown some good moves this series but blew that one…Beltran makes it look so easy.

  76. EliPorter says:

yeah reyes…. these great cardinals fans are booing… what!? also, take pitches here endy and let pelfrey relax before he has to take the mound again

  77. jcervone7 says:

No matter how many times I see it, Reyes’ speed still amazes me.

  78. MetsFan4Decades says:

JOSE !! Bases clearing triple. Looking good tonight, guys. It’s been a while since they’ve had this big a lead this early.

  79. the kooz says:

Whaddid I say at the top o’ the thread?? OPTIMISM folks…….METS baseball

LETS GO METS and waytago Big Pelf!!

  80. NCMetsGuy says:

Where have these 2 out hits been this year.
By the way, that is why you would take Beltran every time over Ankiel in CF. Now if I could have Ankiel in LF….

  81. el_giacomo says:

    JOSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  82. SantanaCYYOung says:

    reyes almost caught pelf

  83. Gina says:

    awesome

  84. SantanaCYYOung says:

where has this been all year?

  85. Church4prez says:

DAMN!! HERE WE COME C B PARK!!!

  86. EliPorter says:

ENDY!!! these cardinals fans are booing baby!

  87. MetsFan4Decades says:

And the hits and the runs just keep on coming.
    Woo-Hoo !!

  88. KingWright says:

    The Phillies are watching.

  89. NCMetsGuy says:

Amazing how much more fun this site is when we are winning. The losers don’t even bother showing up.

  90. dominicanboy08 says:

I dont want to see castillo anytime soon, since he is out the offense is rolling!!!

    • NCMetsGuy says:

Kinda hard to play on the DL. Again, there is no link to Castillo and runs scored. He does what we are doing tonight, hit with RISP.

      • EliPorter says:

dude get over it. how much more empirical evidence do you need?

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Again, do what I did. Take the time to look at the entire season. As of a couple of weeks ago the Mets averaged more runs with Castillo in the lineup than out.

        • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Agreed. Castillo was not the offensive problem. Not having Church in the line-up is what really hurt us.

        • Dafatone80 says:

I’m sure you’re right. But at least over the past month or two, the team seems to do better without him. I’d like to see the wins and losses each way.

It very well could be a coincidence.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Wins and losses are very close to .500 both ways. Go figure.

  91. m00kie says:

that’s a hell of a way to respond to last night’s game.. I’m liking it.

  92. Bobby Bones in SC says:

OK Pelf. Throw strikes. NO WALKS. Solo shots, or a couple of runs can’t hurt you. Just go out and keep people off the bases.

  93. Church4prez says:

J A HAPP TOMMORROW, JAMIE MOYER, KYLE KENDRICK AND ADAM EATON!!

    • NCMetsGuy says:

Who the heck is JA Happ?

      • Bobby Bones in SC says:

        The pitcher for the Phillies.

        • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Or should I say the loosing pitcher for the Phillies

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Thanks Bobby, we play the Phillies this weekend???? LOL. I am guessing he is the guy that they brought up to replace Hamels? Anyone have any info on him?

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Dang you got me all mixed up. Myers, I wish Hamels was out.

        • Bobby Bones in SC says:

The Mets hammered him last year in his first major league debut, which was his only game in 2007.

He has spent the last two years at the AAA level and pitched 100 plus innings each year. 4-6 and 5-6 with an era over 5 in 2007 and 3.54 this year.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Wow, so he is a prime prospect.

        • Bobby Bones in SC says:

I don’ think we should under estimate him. His numbers this year in AAA look good. I like to see them pummel him early just like tonight.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Never underestimate a noname. It’s a Mets curse, even though that too was proved to be wrong based on stats.

  94. metsflip says:

    can you say ass kicking?

  95. EliPorter says:

i just cant fathom this right now. the mets are getting breaks. what is going on!!!???

    • metsalltheway101 says:

i cannot beleive it either. but lets not talk early, anything bad can happen. *knock on wood*

  96. Church4prez says:

the mets hit him up last year.

  97. SantanaCYYOung says:

i’ve been killing the mets all year (for the most part) and i’m here, they have had blow outs this year…i want to hope as much as the next guy, but the mets are very much like oliver perez

  98. ReyesMets says:

This blog is an infinitely more pleasant place without pacman here tonight…

    • NCMetsGuy says:

It’s not just pacman but I agree. There is a hole cast of characters that come on just to vent. I don’t see the guy trying to convince us all that it was better to lose than to win on here tonight either.

  99. Church4prez says:

The phils let hamels throw 125 pitches tonight

  100. Doctork1 says:

Been lurking around here for a while and just now got the gusto to sign up. Plus, being stranded so far away from NY, I don’t have anyone to celebrate blow-out wins with.

Guess you guys will have to deal with me now.

    Go Mets.

    • nymfan1218 says:

Was just looking at the starters for this weekend:

Santana vs. Happ (2nd career start)
      Maine vs. Moyer
      Ollie vs. Kendrick
      Pedro vs. Eaton

If they dont win tomorrow night, then I dunno what to say. Johan better come up big, and I think he will, and I dont think the Mets will be unable to hit J.A. Happ, though we know of there struggles with rookie pitchers. I think they’re starting to get it together offensively and they will be able to score enough runs for Johan. As for the other 3, I think they have a better than average shot to win 2. So I think 3 of 4 is definitely possible and that would be HUGE for this team

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

If you’ve been ‘lurking’ for awhile than you should know the only thing most of us won’t deal with is the never ending pessimists who keep on insisting it’s all over for the Mets, they suck, they should trade everybody, they should fire the rest, blah, blah, blah.

For the most part, us bloggers on here ALWAYS want to see them win.

      • NCMetsGuy says:

Even most of them want to see us win. Even that AlreadyMissShea guy really wants to see us win. It’s just easier to say I hope we lose. It’s a defense mech.

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yeah, but between him and PacMan last night…..well, it was just nasty.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Agreed, even though I was having a lot of fun laughing at AMS. Pacman, well……

  101. m00kie says:

not much better than a frustrated pujol

  102. washtiger says:

It’s great to bring the far-flung Mets fans together. I’m in Northern VA, just outside DC…

And I agree with what was posted earlier, it’s a lot more fun around here when we’re winning!

  103. playmaker3128 says:

I know alot of us mention castillo alot, but 22 runs (and counting) the last 3 games without him in the lineup. I guess its still a small sample size, but i’ve felt this offense flows alot better when castillo isn’t in the lineup (or at least not in the 2 hole).

We’ll get to see this theory now play itself out at least until the all star break, and not having to face hamels in the philly series. However if we start to win and score runs and then put castillo back in the 2 hole when he’s back i’m gonna be pissed.

I don’t give a crap about justifying his contract, i want to win games. He can still play, but he should be nowhere near the top of the lineup. He’s an 8th place hitter.

Also i wonder what santana is thinking to himself right now, save some runs for me tommarow lol. We seem to be scoring alot when pelfs been pitching.

    • NCMetsGuy says:

Well I don’t care if he hits 2nd or 8th but over the course of the season I am glad he is here. As far as us hitting, don’t you think Church might have SOMETHING to do with that?

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Definitely has a lot to do with Church back in there. So far, so good with him……

  104. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Pelfrey is dealing tonight. I absolutely love it. This is what he needs to continue building his confidence.

  105. Knuckler says:

I’ve been up and down (just like the team) with the pessimism all year but I sure am feeling this right now….LET’S GO METS!!!!!!!

  106. Ryn05 says:

    Big Pelf has arrived.

If he ever masters a change or a slider, look out.

  107. playmaker3128 says:

Man is it me or the last couple starts pelf’s change and slider have been better than ever.

With the ability to pitch to contact with his 2 seamer, and strike guys out with his 4 seamer, if he continues to throw those secondary pitches for strikes he’s gonna be a good one, and a perfect example of why sometimes its to early to give up on a pitcher.

9 run lead is good, give him a chance to work on some pitches here, wouldn’t be suprised if we saw him try and throw a couple curveballs.

  108. Bobby Bones in SC says:

The Disney World for beer drinkers. Yea!

  109. jcervone7 says:

It’s 9-0, can’t they let Pelf swing away?

  110. Doctork1 says:

Wasn’t long ago that people around here were calling for Pelf to be sent down in favor of Vargas. Mike may not be as consistent as we would like yet, but in the end …. …… …..

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Well, I think they brought him up a bit too early and glad to see his struggles last year didn’t ruin his confidence. Looks like he came to spring training this year bound and determined to prove himself.
Glad they didn’t give up on him. Everyone kept saying he had good stuff…..

      • Doctork1 says:

I completely agree with you. They did bring him up too early, but once the damage was done, what could have been done about it? Sending him down for a short period of time would have hurt him more than it would have helped him.

Grant it, I’m somewhat bias, having had the chance to interact With Mike during his college days. Either way, that’s my two-cents.

I’m forced to endure the Cards broadcast because of extra-innings, but I can only imagine how great Keith is right now. His star really shines brightest during blowouts.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

I’ve never understood all of the criticism of Pelfrey. I know there have been times when it is frustrating to watch him, but people need to remember is only 24.

Santana wasn’t much at 24 and Pedro was just starting to emerge.

  111. EliPorter says:

if the mets can hold on to this lead, id like to see argenis reyes in the 6th or 7th. easley is no spring chicken, so its best we protect him before he becomes a mummy like castillo

    • NCMetsGuy says:

Agreed, I would rest a few guys. Give Delgado some time. Put Anderson at 1B and Aguila in LF. Then Reyes for Easley.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

That is a great idea. Plus it gets the butterflies out before we really do need him.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Or get the rain back, call it a night after the 5th is over and rest everybody – lol.

  112. metsalltheway101 says:

lets add some more runs and keep the energy going.

  113. Tina says:

I’m furiously knocking wood as I say this, but I think our hitting may have turned a corner. I think Jerry kicked some HoJo ass and made him start really working with these guys on their hitting. Work that was desperately needed. I saw an article sometime last week, I forget by whom, one of the NY writers, calling out HoJo for talking about all the new things they’re doing with the hitters. His point was that HoJo was doing, we can assume, exactly nothing before, because his comments had previously been along the lines of “these guys know how to hit, they’ll come around.”

    I’m liking Jerry.

    And, Church is a stud.

  114. Ryn05 says:

Wilmer Flores hit his 5th home run tonight.

This kid is going to be a beast.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

And this is a home grown talent I hope we’ll see on the Mets in a few years – and not traded for some ‘we need a big bat now’ veteran.

  115. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Nine runs in three innings… Wow.

I guarantee you some morons are still going to complain about the offense “falling asleep” if they don’t score for the rest of the night, as if they should end up scoring 20 runs (which I wouldn’t mind).

    Just watch.

  116. metsflip says:

On a side note, have you guys seen the stars and stripes MLB caps? Its pretty sweet, I gotta Mets one. Every team is gonna where one tommorow…

  117. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Pelfrey 69 pitches of which 47 have been strikes.

Only one runner has reached 2nd.

    Awesome.

  118. Church4prez says:

Philly losers talkin smack on 700 level

  119. dominicanboy08 says:

I will love pelfrey to emerge into a #2 starter, especially that he came through our farm system

  120. Bobby Bones in SC says:

UhOh. Please tell me David is not hurt.

  121. MetsFan4Decades says:

Delgado got that. EVERYONE hits tonight. Woo-Hoo !!

  122. Church4prez says:

    DELGADO THE B JAY DELGADO!!!

  123. Doctork1 says:

Delgado with a bomb. Everything is right in the world tonight.

  124. NCMetsGuy says:

Delgado is going to look pretty good as a 7 hitter.

  125. batsinthepelfrey says:

keep it up big pelf. you have to like the way he is developing. going to make it a lot easier to show ollie the door next year when he makes some ridiculous contract demand of 5 years 60m. plus pelfrey is justifying my screen name tonight…which is nice

  126. Bobby Bones in SC says:

I’m all for us beating the crap out of the Cards, but I’m starting to feel bad for Boggs. LaRussa should come get this poor guy.

    • metsgirl31 says:

I think he’s punishing him for missing that hit and run sign earlier in the game.

    • Tina says:

Down 9 runs, you’ve got to just save the bullpen. And young pitchers got to learn to gut it out.

      • Bobby Bones in SC says:

I understand some of it, but this kids era won’t recover from this in 2008. There comes a point were it does more harm than good.

        • metsgirl31 says:

Yea saving the bullpen is one thing but it seemed a tad harsh leaving him out there like that.

  127. metsflip says:

    Whats wrong with David????????

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

He ducked down to get under a line drive hit by Church. It was like he just got all twisted. I’m hoping it is nothing. PLEASE.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Hopefully, nothing. On that play in the last inning (Wright trying to get out of the way of the ball when he was on first), look like he might have had a twinge or pull in his back.
Cohen said they’re trying to get an update. Hopefully, he just moved just a little too quick and didn’t really pull anything…

      • metsflip says:

thanks but damn… Doesn’t sound too good… We score 11 runs and yet we worry about something… Typical…

  128. Bobby Bones in SC says:

That was the first hard hit against Pelf.

  129. admiralwright says:

i know it was already said but WILMER FLORES

man the kid is 16 and still probably 4-5 years away (hopefully) but it’s just nice to see him doing well. hopefully they give him at least another 20-30 games at kingsport before moving him possibly to brooklyn or savannah

    • Ryn05 says:

If you have the talent and you’ve produced in the minors, 19 year olds are sometimes seen in the majors.

    • dominicanboy08 says:

      what position does he play?

      • admiralwright says:

SS but he’s 6′3″ so he may grow out of it. reading stuff online, he was actually seen as a plus defender and that his bat would need the development, so who knows, maybe had can stick at ss or 2b

        • Bobby Bones in SC says:

The scouts are saying he may land at 3B. I guess they think he is going to be too big to play middle infield. When you look at his pictures he is big, but sure does look like a baby in the face.

  130. batsinthepelfrey says:

pretty sure keith just called mets fans fair weather fans

    • Doctork1 says:

      What did he say?

      • batsinthepelfrey says:

gary said the fans in st. louis are not leaving like the fans in ny might be if it was a blowout and keith quickly responded “these fans are the best, their not fair weather fans” he then realized what he said and try to cover his arse and say “not that i mean mets fans are fair weather fans”. frankly this whole st. louis is the mecca for baseball fans gets a little old.

        • Doctork1 says:

I would rather listen to Keith call me a bad fan and my mother a prostitute than put up with these cards announcers. I’m an extra-innings-package veteran, and these guys, along with the Nationals’ and the Rockies’ guys, are the worst in the league.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

Nats are bad, Marlins are bad too and of course I hate the Braves.

        • metsgirl31 says:

The Marlins’ announcers are by far the worst…I live in So. FL and everytime they play the Mets I have to listen to them…I just mute the tv otherwise the remote would be stuck in the tv.

        • metsflip says:

          I completely agree with you

        • batsinthepelfrey says:

keith would never call your mother a prostitute…Keith loves the ladies!

        • gipper82475 says:

Marlins and Nats guys compete for worst announcers.

        • Doctork1 says:

I agree, the Marlins guys are bad. I think the Nats are worse. And somewhere, the Rockies broadcast team is feeling very left out of this conversation. They might be the worst of the bunch.

        • LeftCoastMetsFan says:

plus i wonder if the cardinal fans would be staying if Pujols wasnt at 299

        • Tina says:

Grace, at Arizona. That guy is the dumbest lug.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Keith really does come across as being partial to the Cards. I guess winning the MVP and a WS while there is hard to forget.

    • metsforever says:

He’s not too far off. If this was happenning in NY, the fans would be vicious to the home team.

  131. MetsFan4Decades says:

There is very little Endy doesn’t get out there. We don’t sacrifice much having him in center when Beltran is out of the lineup.

    • the Straw says:

sacrifice???? endy is a better fielder than Beltran. Period. He and Victorino are the best fielding outfielders in the game.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Not sure I agree with that, but either way it is damn close.

        • the Straw says:

beltran is a very good CF but not a great center fielder. Not even close to Andruw Jones in his prime. Beltran just plays too deep to be considered one of the best. Too many balls drop in front of him.

          Endy can get to EVERYTHING.

        • NCMetsGuy says:

LOL, Endy is a great CF no doubt but Beltran is one of the best in the game by far.

  132. Bobby Bones in SC says:

If Endy could only hit as well as Carlos Beltran.

A Reyes is in the game!

  133. the Straw says:

Whats up Fockers. I just got home from dinner and boy i didnt expect to see this score when i got home. no beltran, wright has no hits, and the mets are pounding the cards…..

i live in philly, so needless to say, this is going to be a big series coming up for me, and for all of us. Some momentum going into this series is a great thing.

Mets have a decided advantage in starting pitching for this series….its time to put the pedal to the metal.

  134. NCMetsGuy says:

I would not mind seeing Endy and Pagan in LF next season and Tex at 1B. That would still leave enough money to bring in a couple of new pitchers.

  135. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Pelf is starting to labor. I’m hoping that is all for him, as it would be good for him to have a nice line after this performance.

    • the Straw says:

PITCH count is at 109. im sure hes done. nice work by him. love to see it.

Schoenweis will get work tonight and then maybe joe smith.

  136. NCMetsGuy says:

Speaking of batting the pitcher 8th. Tell me that Castillo would be great as a 9 hitter. He could then get on base infront of Reyes and others.
Reyes, Beltran, Wright, Church, Alou, Delgado, Castro/Schnieder, pitcher, Castillo.

  137. metsflip says:

Have you guys seen the stars & stripes hat the teams are wearing tommorow? Theyre pretty sweet..

  138. EliPorter says:

ive been on cruise control watching the game muted, while catching up on some work.

    a couple of notes
    - i love manuel’s decision to give wright and easley the last few innings off
    - what a performance from pelfrey. i was on his case and wanted to ship him off in a trade last year. who knows if he’ll ever be the ace we hoped he would be, but this kid has pitched lights out the last 6 or 7 outings. way to go pelf
-yadier molina is a mets killer, even when the score is 11-1

    • metsforever says:

      Wright might be hurt

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Well, maybe you didn’t hear with the sound muted but hopefully, the reason he took Wright out was to rest him and not b/c he did something to his back a couple of innings back when he was on first and Church hit that line drive.
Cohen said they’re still trying to get a medical update to find out one way or the other.

  139. LIMetfan74 says:

They are going to be screwed if wright is out for any period of time. I hope its noy bad.

  140. Can I Get A Witness says:

I’m not in any position to watch or listen. What’s up with Wright? He hurt?

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Back up a couple and read my last post. Still waiting on word about Wright….

      • Can I Get A Witness says:

hate to be a pain, but can you elaborate on what exacly he did to his back while on first?

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

He was on first, Church hit a line drive down to first. David had his lead off first, momentum going towards second when the ball was hit, had to put on the breaks and get back to first, and it looked like he might have slipped a little. When he got back to first, he stood up straight, holding his lower back, looked like he tweaked it or God forbid, pulled something….

        • Can I Get A Witness says:

Crap. Can’t even enjoy a blowout! Hope to God he’s OK.

  141. grotesmask says:

WoW! I picked the wrong game at Busch. Way to go Mets.

And now my brother and sisters of the Amazin’ Mets, a heartwarming tale from last night:

Showed up at Busch after the long schlep drive from Chicago w/ my two kids, my girlfriend and her son (who for some wonderful and inexplicable reason loves our Mets).

I get five tickets at the box office @ 3:30. Get to the Busch about 40 min. before game starts. Un-freakin’-believable BB atmosphere. The place is an absolute sea of red and Cards colors. You have never seen or experienced people who support their team the way Cards fans do. I remember hearing all of this kind of stuff from the 2000 and 2006 pennants, but the experience will just blow you away.

I was screaming my head off for the Mets to the extent that even my girlfriend, to say nothing of the kids, thought I was losing it.

Cards fans zeroed in on me somewhat, but just responded to me by rooting for the Cards–vocally, of course.

You know the box, so I won’t bore you with the ups and downs, except to say I honest to God think we are in the midst of the great turning point. For three straight games we have hit the living crap out of the ball. Starters and relievers have let us down, and it often seems the only thing that makes sense is the adage, “Bad Teams always find a way to lose.”

However, all during the game and after the Glaus death blow, Cards fans came out of nowhere to talk to me and encourage me, saying things, such as “Relax, it isn’t even the All-Star break,” or “The Mets aren’t that bad,” or “Keep Supporting Them, Man, They’ll COme Around.” Just the most incredible MLB experience I’ve had at nine different ballparks, including my beloved Shea.

All I wanted to do was go in there and hate on the Cards for all the horrible suffering they’ve inflicted on us over the course of four-plus decades, but I came away on a high, which isn’t exactly easy for me when my Mets lose. The game, call it sappy, corny, or naive, gave me a new perspective on the 2008 Mets, that I don’t think I would have had had I not made this trip. Just magnificent.

Brothers and Sisters, take heart: Our Mets are coming back form the dead!

    Look out Phillies!

    • Tina says:

      What a lovely story.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yeah, b/c you certainly wouldn’t get that experience in CB park. Only fans I’ve ever seen who cheer when an opposing ball player goes down hurt and boos when he manages to get up (I.e. Jose Reyes)…..
Phillies have the worst fans ever.

    • SuicideWatch says:

Sure sure, sweep the Phillies then we’ll talk.

    • Genesis Does says:

I went to Chicago with my friends this year in April. It was our first baseball trip. We had a ton of fun, went to see both the cubs/mets and the chisox/yankees.

Your post here has made up my mind. Im goin to St Louis next year.

  142. metsflip says:

I was wondering earlier today, could argenis reyes have a competition for luis castillos job next year? I mean, if luis is on the dl for an extended period of time and is def a little too old and argenis does exceptionally well and is quite young, I think it could be an intresting spring training next season… What do you guys think?

    • the Straw says:

nope. castillo will have the job if healthy.

honestly, i think they should put castillo on the 60 Day DL and keep him out for the rest of 2008. No baseball activity at all. let him fully heal and come back in February. I mean we have this guy for 3 more years. lets get him fully healthy, if thats possible.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

I think it is a very good posibility. The problem will be someone in the front office is going to want Luis playing for all that they are paying.

    • SuicideWatch says:

I think Castillo has a 4 years contract and he’s only half way through his 1st season.

      • metsflip says:

I think those things can be blown out of porportion sometimes… Nevertheless it could be a factor… LOL I’m just dreamin

  143. cousinrk says:

You tell ‘em Gary. Lets get some Wright info

    • ravi3 says:

Maybe they aren’t giving any info because Wright was taken out as a precautionary measure…WInning a blow out, your best player tweaks the back slightly, so you take him out….We’ll see whats up when Manuel does his postgame.

  144. EliPorter says:

reyes to reyes for the win… i hope wright is a-ok

    • EliPorter says:

by the way, they turned that dp beautifully. even if (assuming) the kid cant hit, i like him as a pinch runner (saw the kid fly up the first base line) and as a defensive replacement.

  145. MetsFan4Decades says:

‘Reyes to Reyes and the ballgame is over’.

Nice game big Pelf and some great offense.

  146. metsflip says:

    SWEET! First reyes to reyes!

  147. adam11216 says:

pelfrey with a 3.02 era over his last 7 starts.
