    Let’s Go Mets

The definition of a must win

  3. dominicanboy08 says:

johan will dominate the phillies..lets go mets!!!!

    • X-Man says:

I hope they get this game in. Weather forecast does not look promising. I’ve been waiting for this game with Johan pitching and the way the Mets offense has seemed to come to life of late, It would leave a void in my evening tonight if it’s rained out. Lets Go Mets!!

  4. Church4prez says:

    it will be ppd.

  5. shannon says:

    …No Church???

    • MetsFan1976 says:

My sentiments exactly. Last night, during the broadcast, the Mets’ announcers said that Manuel did not believe that Church needed rest–that he needed to play to get his rhythm, or something like that. So what gives? Why is he on the bench for the first game of four against the division leaders?

  6. KingWright says:

It’s supposed to rain all day tomorrow all over the tri state area, so let’s hope they can squeeze this one in.

  7. shannon says:

    Lineup:

    Reyes
    Chavez
    Wright
    Beltran
    Delgado
    Easley
    Castro
    Aguila
    Santana

  8. PhillR says:

There had better be a really good reason to bench Church tonight. If this is Manual just giving Church some rest, then it is pretty dumb.

    • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Jeez, the dude’s had two concussions…

      • mrose says:

thank you…seriously if people don’t understand that

        • MetsFan1976 says:

If the concussion is still an issue, he should not have been activated. Since he was, he had better be fine and, in that case, he should be in the lineup for all four games this weekend.

        • Gina says:

But I thought he wasn’t supposed to come back until he was completely symptom free. If it’s still affecting his ability to play then he’s obviously not completely symptom free. It’s not like he broke something or pulled something and is still experiencing soreness. Either he still has symptoms and he should be resting and definitely not flying anywhere, or he should be fine and able to play everyday.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

Well said, Gina. As you see, I essentially said the same thing, just not as eloquently.

2-0 so far. Hopefully they can add a couple of more, at least–even with two outs.

      • 911nafstem says:

If he’s not on the DL, he should be playing every game of this series. Horrible job by Manuel

  9. Kellman says:

They said yesterday on the radio that they’d rest Church today.

  10. metties1 says:

I can’t believe how nervous I am. What a loser!!!

  11. Dafatone80 says:

Is it just me, or have there been an absolute ton of rainouts this year?

    • MetsFan1976 says:

No, it’s not you. I have noticed it, too. And the other day, when the game was delayed, one of the SNY people (I don’t recall if it was Gary or Keith, or perhaps Matt Yalloff in the studio) made a sarcastic remark along the lines of [paraphrasing], “What a shock! It’s raining!”

  12. playmaker3128 says:

The weather radar doesn’t look to promising. They should just delay this one before it even starts, see if they can get it in an hour or two. However a start and stop type game kind of favors the phillies cause we have our ace going.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Seriously, this is the sort of thing that worries me. My concerns when the Mets play the Phillies–and in recent years, the Braves, even now that they are pretty pathetic–are that things just seem to go against them when they play these teams. Whether it’s “just baseball,” like when Aaron Rowand got that critical 40-foot infield single last year, an umpire’s idiocy, like when C.B. Bucknor made that BS interference call to end that game last year, or a rain delay to cost the Mets a start from their ace against the division leader, things seem to happen to result in Mets losses to these teams.

Now, I’m hoping that the Mets’ 4-2 start against the Phillies this year did away with that–at least as far as the Phillies are concerned–but I can’t help but worry. Especially when Gary announces that it has started to rain there, and there is a “big green blob” on the radar.

  13. iluvbuckner says:

Rain is just to the east of Philly…so there could be a delay in the 2nd or 3rd. It’s not thunderstorms, just that the rain could get a little heavy.

  14. Kellman says:

DId Keith say anything about Reyes and the “fight”?

    • KingWright says:

      He definitely won’t.

      • MetsFan1976 says:

I would like him to do so. Just like when he made his scheduled apology last year (or in 2006–I don’t remember which) for his comment about women not belonging in the dugout, except this wouldn’t be an apology. Just say something like: “I have something to say. A lot has come out in the media recently about a supposed “confrontation” between Jose Reyes and me. I’d like to put an end to all of that right here. There was no confrontation–it was a conversation. Jose asked me about comments I made about him on the air, and I responded. Nothing more. It is now over and done with.” Avoiding it seems to make some people think there is some validity to it.

  15. 911nafstem says:

Big time at bat by Wright

  16. KingWright says:

Cmon Carlos. The first pitch? Dude is all over the plate.

  17. reyesisking says:

hey beltran how bout you play baseball for a change?

  18. EV says:

How did we not get that run home, way to let the rookie pitcher off the hook.

    • reyesisking says:

b/c carlos beltran is the most overrated player in the majors

      • Dafatone80 says:

        Name a better center fielder.

        • reyesisking says:

him being a good center fielder doesnt mean he isn’t overrated…….he is madddd overrated.

        • 911nafstem says:

Beltran IS overrated, unless you’re his agent or a highly delusional Mets fan you’ve probably come to that realization by now.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

Or you can have knee-jerk reactions to everything and call the best centerfielder (overall, not just defensively) in the NL, possibly in all of MLB (certainly top 3 in MLB) “overrated” because he did not get a two-out hit like you wanted him to do. How about Wright not getting Reyes in from third base with only 1 out? Is he overrated, too?

Geez! All this talk of Reyes being immature and look at these comments. Things don’t go the Mets way in the first inning, and people are throwing tantrums and crying that our players are no good.

        • 911nafstem says:

Beltran is overrated, and that conclusion is not from one at bat. 120 mil for what he has done is ridiculous.

        • Dafatone80 says:

He’s the best center fielder in baseball.

It’s pretty hard to come up with a price for his skill set when he’s the only guy who has it.

        • Gina says:

There’s nothing wrong with his bat, what’s wrong is the way we’ve built the line-up around him. They built it like he was a clean-up hitter when he’s only had two seasons with stats like that. He’s not the problem, it’s that the front office relied to heavily on him repeating years that were way out of the norm for him. If he’s in our two or three spot he’s probably one of the best 2-3 hitters in the league. In the 4 spot he’s disappointing. The problem is we don’t have any one else to put there without getting similar results.

        • fongulalou says:

          Curtis Granderson.

        • Dafatone80 says:

Granderson had a better year than Beltran last year. He’s been pretty bad this year, though he’s currently on fire.

And he’s on my fantasy team, so believe me, I’ve been following him this season.

  19. 911nafstem says:

if the Mets lose to JA fcking Happ with Santana…..wow, I just don’t know if it could get any worse

  20. 911nafstem says:

some more stellar D by Delgado there

  21. EV says:

Yeaa Santana. Thank, God he is a GREAT fielder because Delgado defense stinks.

  22. playmaker3128 says:

80% of happs pitches have been up so far. We should be able to get some solid swings off him.

  23. reyesisking says:

nice at bats there mets……..jose is the only one who has a clue……

  24. 911nafstem says:

Happ is going to dominate the Mets, hopefully the rain comes and the game gets postponed

  25. reyesisking says:

they always play like this when santana is on the mound

    • 911nafstem says:

then again Santana gives up grand slams to american league pitchers so it’s a two way street

      • MetsFan1976 says:

Right. He’s done that, what, 12 or 13 times?

Give it a rest. It happened once, when that pitcher shouldn’t have even come to the plate with the bases loaded. It hardly makes him Barry Zito.

        • 911nafstem says:

No excuses, how about dominating a team for once, you know, what he was paid a huge amount to do

        • MetsFan1976 says:

That’s not an excuse, it’s fact. He has an ERA+ of 136, yet a 7-7 record. His ERA in June is a mere 2.27 (I don’t know where to get ERA+ for a specific month, if it’s even possible, but the ERA itself is sparkling enough), yet he is 1-4. His problems have to do with a lack of run support, nothing else. The educated fan realizes that. Those like you, clamoring for changes from one pitch to the next, do not.

  26. reyesisking says:

    castro so solid

  27. SantanaCYYOung says:

i have a bad feeling about this game

  28. lil pelf says:

castro has got to be in the lineup against lefties for every game from here on out

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Certainly most of the time. I like Schneider’s defense *a lot*, but with the Mets offense so inconsistent, they need Castro’s bat in there as much as possible. This is especially true when a lefty is pitching, as Schneider has enough trouble hitting *any* pitcher, let alone lefties. I don’t know that Castro would keep this up if he played everyday, so it may be best to keep the playing time about 50/50, but when there is a lefty on the mound, there shouldn’t be much question.

  29. playmaker3128 says:

Yep, agreed on castro. He may not be an everyday player, but he’s solid. Theres a reason this offense has played a bit better lately, getting church back, easily is an upgrade offensivley over castillo, and castro is a better offensive player than schneider. I like the lineup.

  30. reyesisking says:

id be happy if the phillies just fell off the earth…….we are going to lose this game its obvious…..

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Can you give me the winning numbers for the Mega Millions drawing, too?

  31. EV says:

I agree with reyes. They really needed to score in the first inning.

  32. reyesisking says:

its so funny how anything hit in the air in the park, the phils fans expect it to go out…..GET A REAL PARK……

  33. reyesisking says:

please score some runs for johan!

  34. EV says:

Santana is pitching good tonight, can we get him some runs!!!!

    • MetsFan1976 says:

It’s his own damn fault–he should’ve hit a homer when he batted! :)

  35. playmaker3128 says:

I can just see it now, we score 4 runs, then the rain comes pouring in.

Lets score some runs. Santana looks good out there again.

  36. SantanaCYYOung says:

    its absolutely pouring in philliy

  37. EV says:

On a completely different note, did you see where the Okland A’s signed the best pitcher in the international free agent market. What the heck is Omar doing?

    • MetsFan1976 says:

28 other GMs did not sign the guy, either, so why does this mean Omar is slacking?

      • Gina says:

Did 28 other gms come in talking about how they were going to build through international free agency and how they were going to dominate that area? Do 28 other teams have the resources to outbid for him? Not to mention the Mets weren’t even mentioned among the teams who were front runners for this guy.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

If the other 28 GMs do not intend to try to build through international free agency, then they are much dumber than even the biggest Omar critic can claim him to be.

As for the money, that clearly wasn’t an issue, since the A’s signed him. And I didn’t hear *anybody* but the A’s mentioned in connection with this guy. They apparently jumped on him early, and never let up.

Anybody that criticizes Omar for this is just looking for things to criticize him about. Maybe Billy Beane just deserves credit?

  38. SantanaCYYOung says:

watch the phillies score one run on a solo homer and then the game gets rained out after the top of the 5th

  39. reyesisking says:

bad luck…….but come on SCORE RUNS THIS GUY IS A TRIPLE-A PITCHER

  40. LIMetfan74 says:

Never fails score 11 runs one night crap the next!

    • MeesesGlokmah says:

Unfortunately, I agree. Hopefully they will surprise us and score big later on to get Santana past his 7 wins barrier.

  41. 911nafstem says:

If the Mets ever make the playoffs (which they won’t) the opposing team might as well bring up AAA pitchers to start each game

  42. playmaker3128 says:

Rain should be heavy for a little bit, then maybe get a little lighter, However its still going to be raining the duration of this game. Which is kind of BS if you ask me, this game should have never been started, but they better play through this now that they did.

  43. reyesisking says:

    ENDY ENDY ENDY

  44. EV says:

Oh Santana is on can we get him some freaking runs!!!!!

  45. playmaker3128 says:

Well a positive is where already through 3 innings, now if the mets could only score a run or two.

  46. MetsFan4Decades says:

I don’t know what the problem is with the Mets offense and inexperienced or rookie pitchers….

  47. Gina says:

I know it’s only been 3 innings but are we seriously being 1-hitted by this guy?

  48. reyesisking says:

Its because they have no gameplan or advanced scouting…..

    • Gina says:

Sometimes I feel like we must have some of the worst advanced scouting in the league.

  49. kd bart says:

Two David Wright plate appearances. Two awful at bats. Chased bad pitches both times.

  50. reyesisking says:

    seriously beltran is a JOKE

  51. reyesisking says:

THIS GAME IS QUICKLY BECOMING INFURIATING

  52. 911nafstem says:

I’m surprised the Mets even got a hit off this scrub

  53. Dafatone80 says:

This game is tied. Everyone be quiet.

  54. EV says:

Only the Mets could make JA Happ look like RA Dickey lol.

  55. kd bart says:

All he’s doing is throwing junk and this team can’t hit junk. They all tend to pull off the ball.

  56. playmaker3128 says:

I think that could qualify as one of the worst innings i’ve seen all year, ja happ just carved through the middle of the order like he was facing a bunch of nobodies.

Can we please score santana some freaking runs.

  57. dr jones says:

It clear the game plan needs to be adjusted. So please adjust accordingly.

  58. reyesisking says:

the two rally killers are actually castillo and beltran……get them both out…..

    • reyesisking says:

and by out, i mean off the team…..

      • MetsFan1976 says:

That’s brilliant. Best centerfielder in the league, but Omar should get rid of him because he’s in a slump, and “reyesisking” doesn’t like that. Precious.

        • fongulalou says:

better than granderson, hunter & ichiro???

        • MetsFan1976 says:

Best in the league–Granderson, Hunter and Ichiro are in the AL.

But, for the record, Ichiro is back in RF, Beltran is much better than Hunter, and Granderson is one of the only two centerfielders that may be better than Beltran in MLB (along with Sizemore).

If we go ahead and compare him to Ichiro, though…well, I’m not sure that I could. If I was in a situation where I simply needed a hit of *any* kind, I would choose Ichiro, of course. Still, they are completely different players (really, is anyone like Ichiro?), so it is tough to compare them.

  59. 911nafstem says:

The Mets are like a heavyweight contender who gets beat up by his sparring partner

  60. playmaker3128 says:

I’m very upset right now, then if we don’t score and santana lets up a run people are gonna be all over him, saying he’s not an ace and such. The guy has thrown 40 pitches and gotten through the heart of the philly lineup twice now in this ballpark. He deserves better, time for the offense to do something.

  61. als102 says:

Santana has every right to be pissed. This team is ridiculous that they cant score runs for their ace. Why? Lets Go damn it, give this man some runs

    • reyesisking says:

agreed…….his comments last week were justified……

      • fongulalou says:

f/y/i—2 tickets—box directly behind plate Saturday.

      • MetsFan1976 says:

Amen. I somewhat disagreed with him saying it, but the more this continues, the more I understand. This is just absurd. It’s as if they physically cannot score when Johan pitches, which, of course, is not the case. They need to wake up. It’s already been proven that Johan can’t simply win just by pitching well–they need to score, too!

Well, now it’s time for Johan to help himself! Bases loaded and 0 outs!

    • 911nafstem says:

He picked the wrong week to talk after giving up a grand slam to Hernandez

      • MetsFan1976 says:

Except that people *with* a clue realize that that is a non-issue.

        • 911nafstem says:

actually, that is an issue, people who have their heads so far up their butt playing devils advocate just don’t see it

        • MetsFan1976 says:

I’m not “playing devil’s advocate.” That would imply that you have a point, and I just want to hear your reasoning behind it. Fact is, you have no point, and your comments are completely lacking in reason. I mean, seriously…it was one pitch–and a pitch he shouldn’t have even had to make, to boot! The bases were loaded, with two outs, and an AL pitcher with something like nine career plate appearances up. This was not the time for Johan to get cute–he needed to come right after Felix, which he did, and Felix *literally* swung as hard as he could in case he hit it. Unfortunately for the Mets, he did hit it. Johan was simply *very* unlucky in a situation that he should have never been in. Nothing more. To draw any conclusions from that is just ridiculous.

  62. dominicanboy08 says:

castro should play more than schneider

  63. playmaker3128 says:

Ok good start, cmon aguilla, if we don’t score here somebody hates santana up above.

  64. EV says:

Yea Castro!!!! Come on lets get Santana some runs.

  65. playmaker3128 says:

Santana Grand slam? lol now that would be something.

  66. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Santana do the damage. Come on bubba.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

While Johan blew that at-bat by chasing two pitches out of the zone…WHY WAS HE NOT GIVEN THE TAKE SIGN?!?! He should have never had the opportunity to make the bad choice.

Well, not ideal, but it’s something–RBI fielder’s choice for Jose, and we have the first run.

  67. als102 says:

    Help yourself lets go

  68. 911nafstem says:

Baseball players are very smart people. Now let’s watch the Mets fck THIS opportunity up.

  69. lil pelf says:

    come on reyes

  70. playmaker3128 says:

Santana hurt himself there, idc though reyes is up 1 out bases loaded, he’s overanxious in these situations, lets hope hes not right here.

  71. 911nafstem says:

Santana should shut the hell up about run support after that bailout

    • MetsFan1976 says:

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Either you’ve had a lot to drink already at a 4th of July barbecue, you are a Twins fan with an ax to grind with Johan, or both. I’d rather not even consider the fact that the comments you have been making could be unaffected by alcohol and/or bias.

      • 911nafstem says:

or maybe i’m just speaking the truth and you’re not very bright, i myself would go with latter.

        • Dafatone80 says:

He’s a pitcher, is the point.

Most of them can’t hit. Now you’re going to say “But Felix Hernandez!”

No. You don’t blame a pitcher for striking out. A hit would have been nice.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

Of course you would go with the latter, “911.” You are flipping out about a *pitcher* not swinging the bat well, so I would expect such flawed “thinking” from you (I used quotes because it is not fair to those of us who *are* actually thinking to be lumped in with your nonsense).

  72. lil pelf says:

    ill take it!

  73. EV says:

    Come on Wright!!!!!!!!!!

  74. Bobby Bones in SC says:

A hit here is huge. Come on David.

  75. Skyhigh980 says:

here we go wright, time to prove ur a clutch hitter

  76. Skyhigh980 says:

best 2 strike hitter in the game

  77. Gina says:

I know they don’t have as much practice with it since they don’t bat everyday, but I always found it odd that great pitchers swing at so many bad pitches. I feel like they should have an upper hand or something.

    • als102 says:

      Were showing some fight

    • als102 says:

I really think he was just trying to much to make something happen. It was a bad at bat but given the way the game was going he felt he had to do it all himself. Its great though red some runs for him, It might give him some confidence in the guys around him now

      • MetsFan1976 says:

Clearly ot was a bad at-bat by Johan, but he should have been given the take sign. Don’t give him the chance to make the bad decisions he made.

  78. als102 says:

he was all over that lets go

  79. Skyhigh980 says:

good enough for me. come on beltran!

  80. EV says:

Can Beltran get a big hit for once.

  81. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Wright got lucky he wasn’t punched out. I’ll take it though. Okay Beltran, time to show you are worth the big bucks.

  82. lil pelf says:

david is so good with two strikes

  83. lil pelf says:

this is a big spot for beltran

  84. playmaker3128 says:

That pitch was close to wright, however i thought it was inside. Chance to really put some distance between us and the phils in this game right here. I like the 2-0 lead, but i’ll take a base hit and a 4-0 lead.

  85. Skyhigh980 says:

    Beltran blows

  86. iluvbuckner says:

    way to go a-hole!

  87. reyesisking says:

wow anyone wanna defend beltran now?

    • MetsFan1976 says:

No, not anymore. One at-bat makes him a worthless piece of garbage.

In case you can’t tell, that was sarcasm.

  88. EV says:

You SUCK Beltran swinging at freaking Ball 4.

  89. als102 says:

that was a ball, why did he swing

  90. dominicanboy08 says:

    that was a ball beltran..cmon

  91. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Sheee-aht. Beltran swung at ball four. Okay. Back to playing defense.

  92. LIMetfan74 says:

    BALL 4 JACKASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  93. Jefferies 9 says:

Day off and the Carlos McMoley still doesnt come thru …

  94. 911nafstem says:

at least they got 2 runs, that was a miracle in and of itself

  95. playmaker3128 says:

Dam, beltran seems to be really struggling picking up the ball right now. Well 2-0 lead for santana, his job this inning is to put up a 0, get the offense right back out there.

Its now 6 runs, but its more than he’s got lately. Be interesting to see how the ump calls some of the close pitches for santana, although santana hasn’t been wild like happ was.

  96. reyesisking says:

    BELTRAN SUCKS PERIOD…….

    • MetsFan1976 says:

For those who are actually interested in facts:

      Beltran: 123 OPS+
      Sizemore: 138 OPS+
      Granderson: 123 OPS+
Ichiro (since he *can* play CF): 104 OPS+

Beltran has really stunk it up in this game, but it is only one game. To think it goes beyond that is silly.

  97. LIMetfan74 says:

Santana needs to shut them down here he cant give it back!

  98. Eggman says:

.140 with risp and 2 outs? He swung at ball four twice! C’mon, get into the game for crying out loud.

    • 911nafstem says:

relax, do you really want to bring out all the tree hugging Beltran fans to defend him?

      • MetsFan1976 says:

Do I have to be a tree hugger to defend Beltran? I hope not. I mean, I have the common sense to recognize Beltran for the great player he is…but I’m *really* bad about recycling, and the like.

  99. reyesisking says:

beltran is just not that good…..PERIOD…..

  100. KingmanKong says:

Beltran…bases loaded and 2 outs…. as usual, you suck. Thanks for nothing. AGAIN.

  101. als102 says:

Hey regardless i know we should have more but we got 2 santana just needs to keep doing what hes doing. Lets all pick each other up lets go

  102. reyesisking says:

    WHERE ARE YOU BELTRAN DEFENDERS????

    • als102 says:

really get a grip is beltran the focus of this game right now. He struck out get over it. if were the team we think it is other players will pick it up.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

I can only speak for myself, but as far as I am concerned, my answer is:

Not posting some rant after every pitch, like some people, who shall remain nameless.

  103. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Santana really looks like money tonight.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Haven’t you heard, Bobby? He gave up a grand slam to Felix Hernandez, so he’s a worthless piece of garbage.

  104. als102 says:

There we go pitching like an Ace should 1,2,3. Pitcher spot to lead the inning

  105. MetsFan4Decades says:

Damn – we get the pitching game from Santana we’ve been waiting for all season (so far) and the Mets can only spot him 2?
We all know a 2 run lead is not cause to exhale, even with Santana’s game tonight….

  106. KingmanKong says:

I really like Beltran but I can’t keep seeing him strike out the way he does when its important like this. Seems like its WAY too common.

  107. playmaker3128 says:

Wow great inning for santana. Couldn’t have gone any better, we know though eventually the phils are gonna threaten, thats what they do, so its important to tack on a run or two.

I noticed santana mixing in some first pitch changes. Guys are way out front, nice adjustment as guys have hit balls hard on first pitch fastballs.

  108. reyesisking says:

once again I say where are you beltran defenders? he is the anti-clutch…..

    • MetsFan1976 says:

If you throw a tantrum every 5 seconds, you’re going to need to learn to be more patient in waiting for responses.

  109. reyesisking says:

and now we won’t score another run………

  110. TenTonHammer says:

    Shut up about Beltran.

He’s never been a 4 hitter, and he isn’t one now. Blame Jerry.

    • reyesisking says:

how does his batting order position have ANYTHING to do with the horrible at bats he takes OVER and OVER again…..and he wasn’t hitting cleanup when he stared at a strike down the plate in octover of ‘06

  111. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Castro looked like my wife at the plate that time. I’m sorry, but that was funny.

  112. metsalltheway101 says:

Funny how the lineup has struggled tonight when Chuch is not in the lineup, but in the previous few games when he was in there the offense flourished. Coincedence, I think not.

    • X-Man says:

Agree, I can’t beleive Manuel chose this series to give him a rest.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Agree. The team is much better with Church in the game. I was shocked when I did not see him in this game. If the Mets manage to win this one without him it is big.

      • reyesisking says:

they should bring him in now with the right hander in…..

      • X-Man says:

What I don’t agree with is when a manager changes a line-up by resting a player after the teams seems to have started clicking on offense. It’s the equivalent of spraying water on a fire. Let them get some continuity and continue the familiar batting order that has obviously been working.

    • 911nafstem says:

He needs rest for the Giants series.

  113. als102 says:

Hey if hes an Ace like I think he is hell buckle down and continue to pitch well and not allow them to threaten anything. Heres a big game and Aces are supposed to show up big. Bottom line

  114. Flushing_is_Burning says:

2 run lead at CBP is nothing!!!

  115. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Chavez would have had that ball. Damn.

  116. playmaker3128 says:

    dam big spot here.

  117. 911nafstem says:

okay ace, pitch outta this mess

  118. playmaker3128 says:

Good pitch, now we gotta get howard. Can’t hang that same slider as last time.

  119. Bobby Bones in SC says:

    Charge that run to Aguila!

  120. 911nafstem says:

    Great job Johan

  121. reyesisking says:

i hope beltran gets hit by a truck……

  122. playmaker3128 says:

Dam, if we had endy out there this inning would be over.

  123. reyesisking says:

hey santana you and beltran GET OFF OUR TEAM

  124. ImissPiazza says:

This is why I miss Piazza.

Just kidding but Santana has got to make some better pitches here. Howard is hitting under 200 against LHP.

  125. EV says:

You got to be kidding me, I can’t believe how this inning has turned out.

  126. 911nafstem says:

Pelfrey would’ve gotten out of that jam

  127. 911nafstem says:

    great, now the rain delay

  128. ImissPiazza says:

Btw it really humors me to see how quickly you so called ” mets fans ” place blame on a different player every day.

    • iluvbuckner says:

      shhh….They’ll start blaming you now.

    • reyesisking says:

and you miss piazza so what does that say……….beltran has sucked ALL year, and johan is NOT an ace

  129. MetsFan1976 says:

Did the Mets put on some kind of an overshift for Howard with runners on first and second? Reyes was clearly on the left side of second base, but they can’t give Howard that kind of a hole.

Darling just made a similar comment. Said they can’t play him to pull and then throw him a fastball outside. So, bad positioning by the coaches, and bad pitch selection by Johan and Castro.

  130. reyesisking says:

    johan = no ace

  131. Gina says:

    frickin a

  132. metsalltheway101 says:

horrible inning. the thing is, if Church is in the lineup Chavez plays left and would have caguth Werth’s line drive and Johan would still have a shutout. Now it is the Mets bullpen vs. the Phillies bullpen. Oh boy!

    • 911nafstem says:

johan should still find a way out the inning with the lead, excuses shouldn’t apply to aces.

      • metsalltheway101 says:

i am not excusing johan, he is an ace and has to pitch like one. just pointing it out.

      • Bobby Bones in SC says:

You can’t give extra outs. Santana has pitched a gem.

  133. X-Man says:

Now the Phillies bullpen will completely shut down the Mets and this game is over. Typical.

  134. ImissPiazza says:

Reyes was holding the runner on on second base.

  135. dominicanboy08 says:

when was the last time santana was pitching with a 4 run lead?, the guy have to be perfect because the offense cant score for him

    • 911nafstem says:

maybe he should’ve thought of that when he swung 2-0 with the bases loaded to a wild pitcher

    • wrightstuff08 says:

dominicanboy08, you are 100% correct! this offense has sucked all year with RISP and 2 outs with RISP. If the Phillies were batting against Happ, it would be 10-2 phillies, but it is the crappy Mets offense were talking about.

  136. metsalltheway101 says:

pinch hit for aguila. guaranteed out.

  137. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Those two runs should not have happened. Oh well. Got get back on the bases here.

    • X-Man says:

And if I just had 2 more numbers right I would have won the pick-6. Would’ve, could,ve, should’ve. But you are right, I can’t beleive manuel chose this series to give Church a rest,. I guess they want him well rested for the Giants series.

    • 911nafstem says:

but they did happen, and that’s on Johan

  138. KingWright says:

    Durbin is absolutely disgusting.

  139. reyesnwright says:

Can someone tell me why Augila is hitting and not church? Matter of fact, why was he in the game at all?

  140. ImissPiazza says:

Anybody who blames Johan for anything is rediculous. Dominicanboy is right. If Johan can consistently throw 7 inning, 2, 3 run ball, how the hell can you complain?

    • metsalltheway101 says:

ace’s pitch to a given situation. normal pitchers go out and just pitch.

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

agreed. big pelf got a big lead to pitch freely. johan had a 2-run lead at CBP. O god durbin struck out 6, I’m sick to my stomach

  141. LIMetfan74 says:

Im sorry an ACE gets out of that. I dont want to hear it

  142. LIMetfan74 says:

    We are screwd!

  143. fsolomon75 says:

Bottom line is a true ACE gets out of that mess, especially considering he already had two outs.

  144. reyesisking says:

im telling you the game ENDED with beltan striking out…….b/c it put them in the SAME position as always…….

  145. dr jones says:

This so far is a microcosm of recent Mets/Phillies games. With the Phillies always coming away with the win.

  146. ImissPiazza says:

So an ACE is not allowed to give up two runs to a great hitting, first place team through 6 innings? Weird. Sounds pretty good to me.

    • LIMetfan74 says:

Not when he had two outs and he knows his team has a problem scoring runs. He has howard up who has struck out 116 times already an ace stikes him out!

  147. reyesisking says:

im so infuriated right now it is BEYOND belief……i hope chase utley’s kids get maimed in a fireworks accident

    • dominicanboy08 says:

hey, its just a game, calm down!!

    • X-Man says:

Extremely childess statement my man. This blog has been steadily going down hill. How old are u? I will bet not older than 15.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

do not get his kids involved. lets just hope for chase utley himself.

  148. playmaker3128 says:

Maybe an ace gets out of it, but i’m sure their are plenty of aces that have given up 2 out hits to howard and burrell. Like some of us said before 2 runs wasn’t gonna be enough, in this ballpark against this lineup.

We have 3 hits vs aj happ and chad durbin, where making durbin look like the best reliever in baseball right now. offenses fault again imo.

  149. fsolomon75 says:

Two runs in a nutshell is fine… two runs with two outs when you’re up 2-0 against the first place team is NOT fine.

    • ImissPiazza says:

Okay, then somebody should let Santana know that when he gets two outs in an inning, he is now allowed to give up any runs, hits, or even throw a ball, because after all, he is an ace. And not only with two outs, but if his team only consistently scores 3 or less runs for him a game, it’s also his fault.

  150. metsalltheway101 says:

Why do we always build up the confidence of the Phillies?

  151. metsalltheway101 says:

Bottom of the lineup, Santana better get through.

  152. Two-By-Four says:

I was under the impression that Santana was an all time great pitcher up there with the Seaver’s, the Carlton’s, the Gibson’s, etc. He is a very fine pitcher, but 26 million or whatever he signed for, I think not. This is a game where the truly great pitchers make 2 runs stand up.

    • fsolomon75 says:

That’s my point… yeah the offense should have broken the game open but the fact is Santana should be able to make a 2-run lead stand up.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

aces also throw shutouts occasionaly. not for santana, he pitches good enough to just loose. btw, anybody checking out the fireworks. fireworks or mets game. edge goes to the fireworks, especially the way the mets are playing.

      • ness589 says:

“pitches well enough to lose” is up there with “plays the game the right way” as one of the most retraded cliches in baseball. Pitching well enough to lose is knocking the pitcher when the lineup is piss-poor as is the case with the Mets. Pitching well enough to lose is also pitching well enough to win, the only difference is a run or 2 which is the responsibility of the lineup.

  153. reyesisking says:

and lets throw beltran’s kids into the fireworks too, maybe he’ll start caring bout some shiit in his life…….

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

      go away

    • wrightstuff08 says:

3 hits and 2 runs again Happ is pathetic!! The Mets offense and the bullpen are the reason this team is a .500 team. facts

    • metsalltheway101 says:

well, maybe a couple of extra dollars his way may begin him caring for baseball. oh wait, he is already getting paid about 20 MILLION his way. 20 MILLION to hit .270, .270. and he is on pace to hit a little bit less than 30 home runs. those are good numbers, but not when you get 20 mil per year.

  154. ImissPiazza says:

    You guys are clueless.

Santana has given up 2 runs in this game. If the offense can’t score more then two runs against JA HAPP and co, in this park, then they don’t deserve to win.

    • fsolomon75 says:

What would be so wrong in winning a 2-0 game?

      • wrightstuff08 says:

because we are at CBP and it is the Phillies offense that Santana is pitching against.

    • X-Man says:

Give up Piazza, ther people on here that will never like Santana or give him any credit unless he goes oput there and throws a 2-hit shutout every single game until he retires.

      • Two-By-Four says:

Tom Seaver pitched many years with lineups that were much worse than this one. Steve Carleton won 27 games twice with totally pathetic teams. Koufax and Drysdale consistently won with a team that had great difficulty scoring. There have been pitchers such as Robin Roberts who they said either won 10-8 or 2-1, meaning they would ease up in a blowup but find a way to limit the other team when they had to. The beauty of baseball is that while stats are very important the game transcends it self beyond just stats.

That’s not to say Santana is not a fine pitcher because he definitely is one of the best in the game today.

  155. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Okay all of you Santana critics. How did he look there? Aguila costs the Mets, not Johan.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

yeah, i mean it is totally aguilas fault that santana gave back to back hits to howard and burrell while making about 1/6 of the team’s current payroll

      • wrightstuff08 says:

what does payroll have to do with it?? you probably wanted Santana to come here more than anyone. clueless

  156. playmaker3128 says:

Dominant bounce back inning from santana, 7 innings of 2 run ball against this lineup in this park, i’m sure most of us would have taken that at the beggining of the game.

Middle of the order coming up next inning, we need to scratch out a run, don’t wanna face lidge in the top of the 9th as he’s been dominant.

  157. reyesisking says:

beltran + johan = biggest waste of 250 million dollars

  158. Wright88 says:

    Damn…Santana sucks. *end sarcasm*

  159. playmaker3128 says:

Good start to the inning, bad swing by wright there.

  160. EV says:

I think both sides make a good point. Santana is suppossed to be the ace he should have gotten out of that inning without giving up two runs, especially with 2 out. BUT this offense should have scored more than 2 runs. They left Reyes at third in the first with one out and the bases loaded when they should have scored more than 2 Runs. A good hitting team would have, which the Mets are not.

  161. metsalltheway101 says:

ok beltran, get a huge clutch hit here. come on man.

  162. 911nafstem says:

    come on Beltran, you’re due

  163. EV says:

Can Beltran or Delgado get a big hit here please..

  164. Joe D says:

Man you got some real haters in this chat.

  165. playmaker3128 says:

and heres the pitch around to get to delgado.

  166. Joe D says:

    damn whats he looking at

  167. 911nafstem says:

Chavez may be on 2nd, but he might as well be in the Sahara

  168. metsalltheway101 says:

all right carlos, 2 strikes. come on.

  169. reyesisking says:

    SWING THE BAT THERE

  170. Joe D says:

pitch around?? two over the plate dude

  171. als102 says:

Please dont tell me Arams is not comin in the game

  172. metsalltheway101 says:

    wtf. dang carlos.

  173. EV says:

    BELTRAN SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

  174. LIMetfan74 says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

  175. 911nafstem says:

does ANYONE here have faith in Delgado coming through?

  176. reyesisking says:

you wanna fix the mets? TRADE BELTRAN…..

  177. EV says:

    DELGADO YOU SUCK TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  178. LIMetfan74 says:

    THEY SUCK!

  179. reyesisking says:

if we had any capable batter up in ‘06, wed have been in the world series…..Trade Beltran now he is GARBAGE.

  180. fsolomon75 says:

Maybe Beltran should take another day off. Looks clueless tonight.

  181. 911nafstem says:

Mets had their ace against some schmuck the Phillies got off the street and the Mets will lose. This team is such a disgrace

  182. LIMetfan74 says:

Does anybody think they are going to win this game?

  183. playmaker3128 says:

Horrible, you know wright deserves some criticism as well, after chavez gets on he takes 2 ruthian hacks before shortening up and ultimately grounding out. Again horrible execution by the 3-4-5.

now if we wanna win were gonna have to beat lidge in the 9th, either tied or behind.

  184. EV says:

God dam can anyone on this freaking team get a clutch one out hit or even a two out hit. Let me guess this is Santan’s fault too right.

  185. metsalltheway101 says:

jeez, they suck. phillies score one run this inning and the mets loose. one step forward from yesterday, 2 steps backward today.

  186. X-Man says:

I’ll say it again, why in hell do you mess around with a line-up that has 39 hits in the previous 3 games? You don’t mess with what seems to be working. It’s like praying water on a camp fire.
Church better have something wrong with him because if this is just Manuel giving him a day of rest, it’s totallt ridiculous.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

exactly. only way you do it is if church asked, and i it better have been because church asked for a day off. it church was ok, manuel has to get criticized heavily for it.

  187. MetsFan4Decades says:

Well, Santana pitching in the 8th, which everyone has been calling for all season. Doesn’t appear to be doing us any good though as it’s currently tied.
    Sigh…..

    • wrightstuff08 says:

you are wasting your time, its Santana’s fault that he gets no run support. pathetic

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

8 innings 6K 0walk 2 runs is a winning outing for any other team

  188. fsolomon75 says:

Beltran left Reyes on 3B in the first, the bases loaded in the 5th, and now Chavez on 2B in the 8th. Hitting .140 with 2 outs and RISP. Pathetic.

  189. 911nafstem says:

If Santana gets out of this and that Aguila or whoever the hell gets up next inning, Church better be hurt. Jerry is a freaking moron for sitting out Church at the start of the biggest series of the season to begin with, but that would just be ridiculous.

  190. EV says:

If they lose this game this is the OFFENSE’S Fault NOT Santana’s

    • 911nafstem says:

wasn’t Santana at the plate when he bailed out Happ with the bases loaded?

      • Flushing_is_Burning says:

let santana start the next inning

      • EV says:

Right it’s Sanatan fault for the offense tonight. Where you watching in the first when Reyes was on third with one out and they didn’t score. Yea, you obviously weren’t nor where you watching when Beltran struck out on Ball Four in that inning too.

        • 911nafstem says:

yeah, I was also there when Santana swung 2-0 to a wild pitcher when a 4 year old would’ve been smart enough to realize to take a pitch. Sometimes aces have to create their own success.

    • fsolomon75 says:

I agree. Scoring both runs on a fielder’s choice and bases-loaded walk against JA Happ? They had chances to blow this out and couldn’t do it.

Santana pitched a great game, despite the hiccup in the 6th.

  191. fsolomon75 says:

Wright should definitely take some criticism tonight… not getting Reyes in from 3B with 1 out was inexcusable.

  192. 911nafstem says:

you’re right Gary, it is a crucial game, so why is Church sitting???

    • X-Man says:

??????????? I just can’t figgure this. The offense was on a roll the last 3 games getting 39 hits and then we just sit Church???

  193. KingWright says:

This game has walkoff HR written all over it.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Oh man, don’t think I could take watching that with these Phillies fans…….

  194. playmaker3128 says:

Yeah 8 innings of 2 run ball vs probably the best lineup in the national league in the best hitters park, this guy is horrible (sarcasm)

  195. dominicanboy08 says:

8 inn of 2 run ball is not an ace performance? people need to shut up about santana, he is been great all year

    • 911nafstem says:

pitches just well enough to lose. your definition of an ace is very liberal

  196. metsalltheway101 says:

good job santana. see, the point we were making is not that santana is a bad pitcher, just that he has to pitch to the situation he faced. he did not do that earlier, but in this inning he could not give up a run which he exactly did. santana will receive his fair share of critics as well as compliments, it comes with being an ace in new york.

  197. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Hopefully it is not too late, but I’m looking for Church to enter the game.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

18 runs in last 7 games that Santana has pitched in. 2.6 runs per game….enough said

  198. ImissPiazza says:

Just so everyone knows, in santana’s 18 starts, including today, he has throw 14 quality starts meaning 6 ip, 3 or less ER. And he also threw a 5.2 IP, 2 ER game. So basically 15 quality starts out of 18, and those other three starts that weren’t “quality,” he pitched 7.2 IP with 4 ER, 6.2 IP with 4 ER, and 6 IP with 4 ER. He hasn’t allowed more then 4 ER all season.

    • 911nafstem says:

we get it, you like Santana

      • EV says:

Why don’t you shut up you don’t even know what your talking about. You blamed Santana for the offense earlier when he struck out with the bases loaded. When there were 4 other instances when the offense tanked. Yea, we get it your a Santana hater.

pinch hit for agulia, not castro. dang manuel is stupid.

    • als102 says:

you know what is going on so church pinch hits for castro. that means church wasnt getting a full day of rest if hes pinch hitting. wow jerry really. So the moment the left hander went out church should have been in. That whole really phillie rally started with that ball that dropped in front of the left fielder. Endy would have caught that. Now you bring in church. youve got to be kidding me

  209. IsiahRandolph says:

the mets had their chances; the phillies had one. we didnt get the job done, and they did. this game seems to have taken the typical mets-phillies trajectory for the last 2 years. mets go up by a slim margin, and in the 6th or 7th, either burrell, utley, rollins, or howard kills us.

  210. fsolomon75 says:

I would have left Santana in… he only had one bad inning and still looked strong. If I’m losing, I want to lose with him on the mound and not Sanchez.

  219. 911nafstem says:

Anyone wanna take bets on which Philly gets the winning hit?

  220. X-Man says:

          You’re an IDIOT!

8 IP, 2 er against a very good first place, great hitting team.

        • anditsouttahere says:

ace does not equal shutout ball

ace = keeping team in a position to win.

he held them to two runs, and the first was partially not his fault, aguilla should have caught that first hit to left.

if church is in right and chavez is in left, then thats an out, and perhaps one less run.

church should not have been rested this first game, not after he just got plenty of rest on the DL.

The Mets failed us, not Santana, if anything he did the complete oppositie of failure, he was the only guy to do his job.

        • casey s. says:

          admiral,

you don’t know me. you don’t my knowledge of the game. you actually sound like a joke yourself for presuming to know anything about anyone who posts here.

i’ve been watching the mets almost nightly since i was 7 years old. i’m now 34. i know about the game.

if you don’t understand my point about wanting (no craving) a shut down performance from the “best pitcher in baseball” when we needed it most, then perhaps you don’t understand anything about language, let alone baseball.

IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR TO WANT JS TO FLAT OUT BEAT A TEAM BY HIMSELF JUST ONCE IN A HALF OF A SEASON?

you guys are just letting him off the hook.

        • wrightstuff08 says:

hey casey s, shutting down the Phillies offense to 2 runs in their own bandbox ballpark is pretty darn good. get a clue, that is what you have to look at!! i trust Santana as much as anyone in baseball for a quality start, go look as his stats and tell me different??

    • Wright88 says:

Yea our ace surely failed us

    • wrightstuff08 says:

      is this Willie ?? clueless

forgive me for expecting a shut down performance when we needed it the most from the “best pitcher in baseball” who is earning the most any pitcher has ever earned in the history of the game.

yeah, call me clueless because i expected the guy to go out and win us a game. what the hell is he here for?

      • wrightstuff08 says:

or casey s. is a Yankees fan that is jealous that they dont have any top starters

so, do you think i’m still a troll.

or, am i simply just a disappointed, frustrated, met fan that really, really, really wanted my ace to go out and win a game?

        • wrightstuff08 says:

ok, maybe that is a little harsh, but Santana did his job. i will take 8 innings/2 runs from any pitcher, even Doc in his prime, especially against the Phillies offensive attack. This loss is totally on the offense. When you cant score more than 2 runs in citizens park against a mediocre pitcher, then you dont deserve to win. plain and simple

  250. MetsFan4Decades says:

  259. EV says:

Again how is this Santana’s fault? If they score Reyes from third with one out in the first, Mets probably win this game.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

why was santana swinging in the fourth. he turned his walk into a K.

    • IsiahRandolph says:

say what you like, but he has to keep philly from scoring less than 2. those 2 runs in the 6th were unjustifiable. he had two outs and the score was 2-0

  260. metsalltheway101 says:

Post this on the bulletin board before the game tomorrow: “Don’t lose the game in the last inning crushing your hearts so that the Phillies get all the confidence they need to go on a huge run and take the division.”

  261. Metskin says:

Just anothe, pathetic, gutless display by our “stars”.

  262. IsiahRandolph says:

im just devastated. the mets-phillies games always follow the same pattern. mets go up by a slim margin early on. the phillies make a comeback in the 6th or 7th. and the mets ultimately lose in the 9th or extras- the big hit generally comes from utley, howard, burrell, or rollins. just a sickening loss. these are the types that make it hard to go to sleep at night. by the way, if you dont believe this, look at the games the mets lost to the philthies last year, and youll see.

  263. mrose says:

i gotta say, i’m as annoyed as all of you, but to say resting Church was dumb? I for one, don’t want the guy to have much longer lingering effects or to go back on the DL. He came back, played 5 games straight and hes allowed to have a day off. Aguila didn’t lose this game. Wright not hitting, Beltran, Delgado, and even Reyes…that lost us this game…

    • LIMetfan74 says:

Church didnt cuase us to loose. Beltran did!!!

      • mrose says:

thank you but people up here commenting like “I hope church is rested” ……… yea…..did you watch the game?

        • 911nafstem says:

yeah, and they got 2 fcking runs

        • EV says:

2 fcking runs it should of been 4 or 5 fcking runs. If the Mets had a real offense. Beltran not Santana killed us tonight. He left a small army on base tonight.

    • kd bart says:

Thank you. Someone gets it. Top 5 spots 1-17. That is why they lost. You could see it from the first inning on when Wright pop out on a bad pitch with Reyes on third with one out that they weren’t going to do a thing tonight. The team has reverted back to non-hitting mode. They’re just following their season long pattern.

  264. reyesisking says:

i stand corrected…….i hope shane victorino’s children are hit by a bus

  265. Wright88 says:

We need some batters, I’m sick of us wasting good pitching. Screw the bullpen, I can live with our pen it has been pretty good. We need someone who can actually hit.

  272. dr jones says:

The Mets lack that thing.. The thing that the braves used to have and now the phillies have. Even in 06 we didn’t have it. Wish I knew what “it” was.

  273. fortleemets says:

Please respond to this post if you were an avid Willie hater and stated that the team would do better if Willie was fired. Admit your mistakes and admit that Willie was not the problem. Admit that the team except for Church, Beltran, Wright and Reyes, on offense, is not good.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

not a willie hater, but i admit that i thought this team would respond with a coaching change. guess i was wrong.

      • fortleemets says:

Yes, you were wrong. And I’m sure you will, as most New York Mets fans do, blame the manager for this game as well. We score 2 runs against a rookie pitcher. That is on the players. The players.

    • dr jones says:

Let it go man,, Let it go.. Willie is long long long gone and will never wear the Met uniform again. Thank god..

    • 911nafstem says:

I only said it was worth the chance of seeing if a new manager could spark the team. It wasn’t, but am I crying over losing WIllie? Hell no

      • fortleemets says:

Maybe admit that changing a manager never “sparks” the team. Actually, absent the florida marlins, please tell me a situation in recent baseball history when that has ever happened.

        • Two-By-Four says:

So if something has not occurred over the past couple of years then it no longer has any applicability. BTW try Garner in Houston, or Bob Lemon with the Yankees as just two more and that doesn’t include teams that have gone on winning streaks immediately after the appointment of a new manager. It does occur and it was worth a try before backing up the truck.

        • fortleemets says:

The Yankees were 52-43 before hiring Lemon in 1978. Obviously, Billy Martin was not fired because of the team’s performance.

    • Two-By-Four says:

Is Willie going to be the new Kazmir? Give it up. It’s not like Willie was an outstanding manager. He is easily replaced.

  274. Shades of Ty Wigginton says:

Reyes, Wright and Beltran all will be All Star Reserves and have put up phenomenal numbers. Santana has done everything the Mets have asked him too. Maine has been decent. Wagner unhittable at times. And Pelfrey has been more than what we expected before the season. Why arent the Mets pulling this off? This is just bad luck. Real horrible luck. From a franchise thats been plagued with stuff like this.

  275. als102 says:

Big game, you put your best line up in you dont rest key guys its crap, absolute crap. good luck guys im going to drink for the rest of my 4th enjoy the weekend.

its crap if it isn’t a player just coming off his 2nd concussion….go drink, please, your post is ignorant

      • 911nafstem says:

then rest him against another team besides your division rival that you’re chasing

        • mrose says:

          he didn’t have that luxury!
I’d rather rest him tonight, when honestly, we should have had our best chance to win (Santana pitching against a rookie) than the rest of the series

          wow

      • als102 says:

He needs to rest yet you bring him into pinch hit and play the field later in the game. your clearly ignorant.

      • Two-By-Four says:

You may be correct in your assessment. Perhaps the Mets were just following Doctor’s orders.

Now just what medical school did you graduate from?

  276. 911nafstem says:

This game was the straw that broke the camel’s back, the season is over, the only fear I have is that Omar will do something incredibly stupid to try to right the ship. Bring up Carp or Martinez, give Mets fans something to get excited about. This team is dead.

  277. X-Man says:

This is all part of the script. The Mets will be 8 games out (not 7 ) with 17 to play and they will over take the Phillies on the last day of the season. Pay back’s a bi…..tch. LOL

  278. playmaker3128 says:

Heart! this team has no freaking heart. Its really unbelievable. Offense got shut down by JA happ and chad durbin. The 3-4-5 are the culprits in this one, from wrights missed sac fly, to beltrans strikeout with bases loaded, to delgados horrible ab’s all game.

Santana did his job as far as i’m concerned, the phillies are going to score a run or two, there a great offensive team, and playin in this small ballpark.

    Other questionable moves –

Biggest game of the year and we rest church, almost as bad as giving brian lawrence the first game last year in philly when we were strugglin in september. Aguilla prob cost us at least 1 run with his defense.

    - Why pitch to victorino? you have a right handed batter up next, then if they bring in jenkins you bring in felciano. horrible desicion.

  279. IsiahRandolph says:

tell aguila to pack his bags and get the heck out of this town. i dont want to see him again. this is an unconventional argument , but he lost us the game. he wasted at bats. he took a really bad route on the werth single that started the 6th inning rally. he made a horrid throw home on the 2nd run- even an average throw gets utley out

    • mrose says:

thats not even close to true…utley runs well, it would have maybe been close on a better throw, but by no means is he out on an average throw

  280. reyesisking says:

    beltran sucks, always has……

  281. admiralwright says:

why did johan come out? he threw 95 pitches

  282. Keith17 says:

Despite all the millions he’s getting, I still feel bad for Santana. What a wasted game. I hope he makes another comment about players not doing their jobs.

  283. lil pelf says:

there needs to be a mets phoneline for games like this

  284. metsalltheway101 says:

    Delgado and Beltran combined: 0-8, 5 K.

Wow, way for our #4 and #5 hitteres coming through. as the case has been all year, beltran and delgado have stopped this team from progressing all year.

  285. BlueTrane says:

This was obviously Willie Randolph’s fault….

  286. playmaker3128 says:

Ohh and by the way, alou had a really nice game out there today. oh thats right he was “supposed” to play today and now won’t be back till after the all star break. So then lets just bench church while were at it.

        • reyesisking says:

actually you are so right on……..although reyes sucks with 2 outs and men on

  296. KingWright says:

THERE IS NO REASON for Santana to be pulled from this game, it was by far the WEAKEST decision of the entire season. How on earth do you pull him after he pitches less than a 100 through EIGHT INNINGS?!? Are you kidding me?!

This coaching staff is absolutely clueless when it comes to their pitchers, and it’s completely embarrassing.

    • MetfaninFL says:

There was a good reason to pull him. He threw almost a hundred pitches and was facing the heart of the order. One bad slider from a tired pitcher in that bandbox ends the game. I would much rather have a fresh pitcher in that situation. Duaner made them get two hits to win it. Now, why we didn’t walk Victorino to pitch to Coste or Jenkins I do not have a defense for. I wouldn’t say the season is over after this loss but I’m very nervous that were going to make a stupid panic trade and ruin more future years.

    • bambergerrip says:

      100% on the money

      • bambergerrip says:

actually on the money was meant for king wright, not the marlins fan. there is no way to defend pulling santana. zero upside, only downside; the ninth was his. and santana needs to demand pitching it. demand it. not be ‘fine’ with it

  297. dr jones says:

The Met offense lost this game – plain and simple.

  301. nyj01827 says:

Let’s not blame Chris Aguila for all of this.

I put a lot of the blame on Johan Santana. Yes, I know a lot of people out there are like what’s wrong with you? He threw 8 innings and only gave up 2 runs. You’re right. Johan did great pitching wise. However, he is starting to make me question is baseball intelligence.

Why? Remember the top of the 5th inning? There were bases loaded, no one out. This was following Chris Aguila getting walked on a full count. This is a rookie pitcher who was struggling. The game was tied 0-0 at this point. He threw two balls to make it a 2-0 count. Santana swings at a questionable pitch. Most likely would have been a ball. Hypothetically, let’s assume it’s a strike though. Now it’s 2-1. Santana swings at a pitch near his eyes. The count would have obviously been 3-1. The next pitch after that was a ball too.

So what do we have here? A lack of baseball intelligence? He’s the pitcher. First off, no pitcher under any circumstance, unless they’re Micah Owings (or Mike Hampton when he was with the Mets) should be swinging at 2-0. Even if there aren’t runner’s on base. Even if it’s right down the middle. Nonetheless when it may have been a ball and you got the bases loaded with no one out against a rookie who was walking everyone. He winded up walking Wright with the bases loaded and nearly walking Beltran too. Carlos Beltran also swung at ball 4 on a full count. It’s a little more understandable for him though because he’s the clean up hitter and should be looking to drive in runs. Chad Durbin had good stuff against the Mets tonight so the ball likely did initially look like a strike.

Johan needs to know his role as a hitter. Hit when you have to, not when you want to.

    • KingWright says:

To blame Johan whatsoever for not coming up in an offensive situation has got to be the most ridiculous rant I’ve ever read on this website.

Really shows how low we all feel about this offense. Putting blame on our ace for not having a good AB. Ridiculous.

      • wrightstuff08 says:

lol, i hear ya, some people need to use some brains before they speak. Johan is a pitcher, not a hitter, and he played all his career in the AL where the pitcher obviously has no hitting experiences. It doesnt matter what someone’s salary is, some Mets fans need to get a clue. Omar needs to get a hitter than can get clutch hits when this team needs them. plain and simple

    • ness589 says:

Johan Santana pitched 8 innings and gave up 2 runs to the Phillies in Citizens Bank Park.

The Mets scored 2 runs off J.A. Happ in 4.2 innings and left the bases loaded in Citizens Bank Park.

Who is more to blame for the loss tonight? The pitcher for giving up 2 runs to the best offense in the NL over 8 innings or the lineup for scoring 2 runs against a guy they tatooed in one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball?

  305. X-Man says:

I will say this for the 5th time today. You don’t mess with a line-up that had 39 hits in the previous 3 games. We all know Church had 2 concusions and we don’t want him to play if he’s not feeling well, but if this was just a day of rest against the team you are chasing, then it’s unbeleivable to me. It’s not just about one player, with church in the line-up, he LENGHTENS the whole line-up from top to bottom. The offense finally started to click and what does Manuel do? he sits one of the key cogs in that offense that was really starting to hit and hit it’s stride.

    • metsalltheway101 says:

took the words from my mouth. great minds think alike, too bad manuel does not have a great mind.

      • X-Man says:

It just makes no sense. Team offense is very delicate in baseball, you change one piece and it throws it all out of wack. I know Beltran , Wright and Delgado didn’t perform well today and everyone is right in pointing the finger on them for the Mets loss today, but by removing Church from the line-up it changed the WHOLE DYNAMIC and flow of the batting order. It has a direct affect on everyone else. Dumb.

wilpons on hiring willie and then jerry:

“hey who cares if they are incompetent, affirmative action is more important!”

    • nyj01827 says:

You sound like the typical idiot influenced by the corruptive New York media. Affirmative action was outlawed in the United States, as was quota’s and all that other crap in 95′.

That’d only be applicable to African-Americans anyway if you were going to apply it in any baseball sense because a huge bulk of major league baseball is from Latin America. In general, where ever it’s warmer, there’s going to be more baseball talent because you can play all year round. That’s why so many of our baseball players in America come from California, Texas and Florida.

Omar hired Willie. Not Wilpon. Omar was with the Mets a while before than. He held his own with the Expos as their general manager. He’s had mixed results with the Mets. The Santana trade isn’t the one I’m angered about. He’s done a lot of decent ones like Church/Schneider for Milledge and Duaner for Seo. He made a great one getting Maine. However, he made horrible one’s giving away guy’s like Heath Bell, Jeff Keppinger and Brian Bannister for practically nothing. The other one that will burn the Mets too was Jacobs for Delgado. Getting Lo Duca during 06′ was a good pick up though, as was Marlon Anderson during both stints, Damion Easley and Endy Chavez. He’s done an average job as a general manager, but that just isn’t good enough in this town.

Willie just wasn’t that good of a manger. He did the same thing over and over. Kept relying on the same duds. To the point he became a dud. He didn’t do that bad though. It was just time for a change. I don’t know if Jerry’s the guy, but if the Mets don’t make the playoffs I know he won’t be back. Neither will Omar.

To bring that kind of thing into this is just pathetic though. If that’s how upset and weak you’re going to get, don’t even bother watching the Mets.

  317. EV says:

Works for me I’m getting really tired of Beltran.

  320. reyesisking says:

duaner is the man, taking it upon himself…..HEY DUANER, you are ten thousand times the man carlos beltran is

  321. playmaker3128 says:

Agreed on church, dont give him a day now in such an important series. you give him a day off maybe after we’ve won 2 in a row, or maybe against the giants when we come back home. Not the most important game of the year with our ace on the mound.

and yes, why is the santana AB earlier in the game a focal point. . If you don’t want santana to swing, give him the take sign.

Thats not the AB we should be focusing on. How about the inability after that to score more than 2 runs. Beltrans AB, how about wrights ab in the first inning. Again plenty of opportunities to score runs, we just didn’t get it done again!

    • nyj01827 says:

All over those things matter. Definitely Beltran’s at bat. But Santana just has to use his head. Do you need a third base coach who’s barely even been here like 2 weeks giving you the take sign? The bases are loaded with no one out in a 0-0 game. It’s 2-0. Just take. You should be crowding the plate to screw with the struggling pitcher’s head too. You should be taking two pitchers.

The Mets do have to give him more runs though. His job’s not to be a hitter, however this task didn’t require him to be a hitter. All it required him to be was a spectator. The Mets offense is severely incompetent and no one should be at blame anyone more than Carlos Delgado. Beltran and Wright have their days. Delgado struck out three days. Delgado does all the good at once during blow out games. I say get a real first basemen if you want to win.

  322. nyj01827 says:

The Mets have been holding up alright, but they need to right now.

I’d seriously consider packing the season in right now though if they can’t. If they get swept, the season is essentially over. There is no way they’d recover. The Phillies would be on a 7 game winning streak. Most likely this won’t happen. It has to be a priority for the Mets to at least repeat what happened in St. Louis and against the Yankees which is to tie. It’d be like the series never happened. The Mets woes against the Phillies were last year’s woes. They’ve held their own this year with them.

This isn’t one guy in particular. These kinds of losses just can’t happen. It’s extremely embarrassing. What happened against St. Louis two nights ago was worse. The hit by pitch and home run they gave up was pitiful. It really tells me something about Jerry if he’s using guy’s in the bottom of 9th in games when they’re not even going to be on the roster within a day or two, regardless of perfromance. Especially when he was struggling a little bit and there were other rested Mets in the bullpen.

I know Delgado’s got more of his pop back, but what’s wrong with Jerry playing him against a lefty? He struck out 3 times tonight. I could have predicted that. I know he was a monster against the Yankees, but he reminds me a lot of Heilman. He does really good when there’s not a whole lot of pressure. Anything that counts, he’s not the guy.

Using Church to pinch hit was understandable. Anyone for Aguila too. The Mets gave these last two games away. They had the lead. Santana didn’t use his head at the plate. It would have been at least 3-3. Sanchez is human. He’s going to give up runs here and there. This loss just wasn’t acceptable though. Neither was the one in St. Louis. Neither was that loss when Wagner gave up a three home run to Tony Clark on his weak side of the plate. The Mets just may not have it. They gave to come out under 5 out though or pray St. Louis loses a lot, otherwise it’s over.

  323. EV says:

Yea if Beltran was a REAL MAN he should step up and take the blame. Hey Beltran you only left a SMALL ARMY on base tonight.

    • anrst says:

why would Beltran or Reyes ever act like men… when big daddy Bernazard is there to breast feed

  324. DAK442 says:

Manuel just blathered about nothing. His excuse for pulling Johan was crap. “I thought he did his job.” What? Guy threw 95 pitches, he’s getting paid handsomely to show some balls (not to give up 2-out rallies) and go 9.
And Damn, am I sick of Beltran already. He’s hitting .140 with RISP and 2 outs! That’s GARBAGE, not $140 mil. Can we deal him in a salary dump and just play Endy out there? You get the same D, more balls, a couple fewer HR for like 1/10 the price. Does Beltran even have a plan anymore? How long do we have to watch him stare at meatballs down Broadway and then hack at balls? I seriously think he decides whether to swing or not before each pitch, regardless where it is.
The rest of the lineup isn’t exactly blameless either. Bunch of gutless simps.
And Johan – you pitched good tonight. We expected great. How ’bout bearing down with two outs in the biggest game of the year?
Damn, am I glad I didn’t buy any tickets for this weekend.

  325. anrst says:

    we suck.

  326. reyesisking says:

im embarrassed that johan comes here and has to deal with the horror that is the NY Mets…

  327. DAK442 says:

I wonder if Johan ever faced anything as stupid as getting pulled in a crucial game he was dominating in the 9th when he was in Minny? Why can’t we get a decent manager?
Johan came thisclose to throwing Jerry under the bus. He’s a gentleman, at least.

    • reyesisking says:

he should have considering jerry will not be here next year……..hey wilpons, can you hire someone COMPETENT FOR ONCE

      • wrightstuff08 says:

lets face it, the Phillies are a better ballclub than the Mets.

        • nyj01827 says:

You’re right, but the Mets easily gave this game away. It was practically locked up for the Mets as long as they hit mediocre and tacked on a couple more runs. They basically scored of off walks. They didn’t even deserve to be in this game. The only reason why they were was because of Johan’s ability to pitch and the Phillies lack of constitentcy themselves.

The Phillies are a decent club, but so are the Mets. They really aren’t that much better than the Mets. The guy they threw out on the mound tonight didn’t have the best stuff. The Mets simply can’t hit. It’s weird too because when the Mets do hit, they hit a lot, like against the Yanks and Cards, but couldn’t against the Yankees later in that series, as with the Cards and not the Phils.

The Mets are exactly what they’re record is. Anyone could tell you a team with that record with the roster they do is either inconsistent, injury-prone or lack in a department. For the most part, that’s hitting. However, the pitcher can be a problem too with guy’s like Pedro and Oliver.

  328. nyj01827 says:

Also, with Delgado, I know he’s picked up a little bit lately and Sanchez has thrown well, but these two guy’s just didn’t get the job done tonight. Chris Aguila can’t play. There’s a reason why he didn’t last with Florida who usually gave young guy’s the shot to develop.

The injuries have killed this team too though. Moises Alou is a great hitter. He takes his injuries to heart, but so do the Mets. He should retire. He’s embarrassing himself by continuing to think he can play. Angel Pagan’s fallen off the face of the earth to the point we’ve relied on Nick Evans, Trot Nixon and Chris Aguila too.

Church does need his rest, although tonight wasn’t the night. Definitely not when your age is on the mound. You want to make a dent in game one. Endy’s done alright, but the Mets have to revamp their line up. This may mean Church bats second. I just can’t stand Carlos batting 5th though. He sucks. There’s no other way to say it. Batting him sixth you can get away with, but this guy can’t protect Wright and Beltran. I agree with playing Castro a little more, but I don’t think using guy’s like Aguila and Marlon Anderson (great pinch-hitter, not so good every day player) out there will make this team win.

  329. DAK442 says:

Relying on Alou was incomprehensible. He and Castillo being starters mean way too many ABs for AAAA players and bench guys who are bench guys for a reason. We’re toast unless the serious WC contenders go totally in the crapper. I mean, like Pujols missing the season kind of crapper.

  330. nyj01827 says:

Any of you guy’s notice Schoenweis and Feliciano have the same exact statistics with wins, losses, innings pitched and ERA? lol Kinda weird. I looked quick and noticed it while looking at the web-site.

Remember though, with the Phils, Lidge is a cruncher under pressure. Apparently not against the Mets, but let Pujols have a little more of him again. The Mets just don’t got it. They’re going one win, one lose for like the past week and a half now. Before than, it was even worse. They were going like 1-7 and 7-2. Maybe the all-star break will help with a little rest, but this series is the time to get things done or just prevent damage.

I don’t think the Mets are depending on Alou anymore, but they simply haven’t gone out there and pulled the trigger. With Church back it’s not as bad, but part of the reason why the Mets declined was because they had a LF and RF every game that was a reserve or AAA type player. They need to go out there and make a trade to stay competitive. They barely got a farm system to do it though.

  331. nyj01827 says:

Next year, I think the Mets will have a breath of fresh air. First off, Jerry Manuel probably won’t be back. Secondly, if Minaya doesn’t get us into the playoffs, I don’t think he will either.

From there, we won’t have Alou back simply because he’s useless and will probably retire. We may re-sign Easley if he wants to keep playing, but the bench will still be solid. Still a good back up catcher and lefty pinch hitter under contract with a good 4th and 5th OF. Church will likely continue to develop.

No more Pedro. Even if he is okay. He’s not worth the burden. We need to get younger. No more Oliver. Lack of consistency. Really the truth is with the exception of Luis Castillo, all the perfect guy’s are becoming free-agents for the Mets in the offseason. Hopefully, they’ll be able to land a couple good starting pitcher’s while replacing Pedro and Perez.

From there, there’s a few decent outfielders. I like Pat Burrell and Raul Ibanez. Burrell’s a much healthier version of Alou who’s killed the Mets in the past. Although he strikes out a little more, he doesn’t get hurt like Alou. He’s played in at least 144 games every year since 05′, he’s got good power and would be a great steal from the Phillies who you know will be cheap considering how they handled the Aaron Roward situation. They wouldn’t give him 5 yr/60 mi, even though that was at baseball market value or lower. Sadly, Andruw Jones got 2 yr/36 mi. The Mets could have probably even picked him on that. Ibanez is from NY, so that may help if the Mets try to get him.

I know Dunn sucks at what ever position he plays, he doesn’t hit well for average and strikes out a lot, but he’s got amazing power and sadly is still versatile enough to use out there for when until Martinez is ready if they wanted to get a 1B. New stadium, younger team, new GM, new manager and you get a new look. They haven’t hit rock bottom like they did in 02-04′, so now’s the time to make sure thing’s stay fresh.

I don’t want to get down on this season, but there’s just nothing the Mets are showing us. Same old, same old. The should be called the New York Mediocres instead of the New York Mets.

  332. nyj01827 says:

Also, the Mets schedule next week compared to what the Phillies will have to deal with is nothing. Sometimes the Mets let the weaker teams get to them though like the Giants and Rockies who they’ll be playing. Philadelphia has to deal with St. Louis and Arizona.

If the Mets can take two out of three, it’d do two things. One, leave them right where they were before they started. Two, prevent the Phillies from continuing the momentum they’ve developed in this four game win streak following their 3-10 span.

So let’s not get to down on them. I remember cursing like a trucker a little bit after Monday night’s crappy loss on Monday, but they came back and took care of business 7-4 the next night. They lose a tight game the next night, win the following by a large margin. Sadly, hopefully the same pattern plays out.

In my opinion, the Cardinals are a better team than the Phillies. They Mets have lacked both competence home and away, so being on that road isn’t even the reason why they can’t get on a hot streak they so desperately could use, if it didn’t follow a sudden five game losing streak. John Maine should be feeling good for tomorrow. Delgado’s handled Moyer well in the past, although that might not mean anything in 08′.

Oliver should be on a thread again versus the Phillies, because they need to start seeing competence out of him. Unfortunately, that same watch could be placed on Pedro soon too if he doesn’t get it together. Guy’s like Armas can’t be the guy’s we rely on either. July’s a month for trades.

    LGM! LGM!

    I can’t stand this sh)t!!!

    Let Johan Pitch, JM!

  334. nyj01827 says:

Listen, it could be worse. At least Duaner is a man. If there’s one guy who was going to go out there, I’d want it to be Duaner. He usually doesn’t crunch. He threw Carlos Muniz out there in the bottom of the 9th against St. Louis which was a pure mistake.

Willie would have been dumb enough to use Aaron Heilman in the 9th inning. He would have seen it as ”rewarding” him for his recent success. Jerry is better, although not completely, at knowing Heilman’s capabilities. Although Schoewneis has been pitching well this year, it really bothered me seeing him so emotionless in that loss to San Diego when he hit a guy with the bases loaded.

And honestly, Philadelphia tears Billy Wagner a new one every time they see him. Do any of you remember that game the Mets put their hearts into to take the lead 8-5, only to have Billy give up 5 runs in the 9th inning? Five freaking runs. How sad is that?

Sometimes it feels like you can give Billy all the run in the world and he’ll still crunch. Lately, he’s been alright, but he just isn’t good against the Phillies. Especially in Philadelphia. It’s like they have an extra motivation to beat him or the fans really do get in his head.

Wagner’s actually better at saving games than coming into tied games though. Especially in the 9th inning. For some weird reason, he’s actually better in extra innings in tie games. If there’s a guy going out their in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game, I want to see Sanchez or Feliciano. Joe Smith could be nerve wrecking to watch at times and Tony Armas Jr. just shouldn’t be thrown into those situations.

The Mets bullpen is about as good as their team. Just average. The spots where they are stronger is their defense. Especially when Castillo isn’t in. Those are the kind of thing’s that really help when you’re actually winning though. Defense doesn’t mean anything when you can’t hit. You have to at least score a few to give your pitcher’s and defense some leverage.

Santana and Maine have held up well too. Pelfrey’s really began to settle in well since nearly losing his spot too. The Mets simply need to make some trades. Get a decent right-handed reliever. Get a legitimate corner outfielder who’s more than a stop gap. Get rid of Delgado or allow Tatis to get in there as a significant platoon guy.

Three of four is asking for a lot. It can happen though. It’s got to be out goal. If they can take 2 of 3 and make this series a split though, I’ll be happy. Hopefully from there, we can pick up one or two on the Phillies. It’s hard to believe this can be possible, but the Mets can look like two completely different teams two different nights.

  335. phillieInNewYork says:

So the Mets lose the first and all hell breaks loose..you dont look so cocky now as when you guys nabbed Santana.Back then it was time to reverse the collapse and stick it back to the cheap Phils.
