The Mets (44–44) defeated the Phillies (48–41) by the score of 4 to 2 in 12 innings, including a 2.5 hour mid-game rain delay.

However, in case you missed it, Billy Wagner blew a 2–0 lead in the ninth inning, letting up a game-tying, two-out, two-run home run to Jayson Werth, pushing the game in to extra innings, but Fernando Tatis stepped up in 12th inning with a two-run home run of his own to give the Mets the win.
Additionally, the Mets had a runner in scoring position in each of the first seven innings, including bases loaded in the second, as well as second and third in the third, yet could only score one run on Carlos Beltran’s solo line-drive home run to right field; Oliver Perez, and his open-shirtedness, looked erratic at times, but remained effective and totally in command, letting up just four hits and no runs in seven innings of work; with Perez on the mound, Endy Chavez made a bizarre, full-extension, reach-back and to-the-sky catch in right field, which saved a run, while Brian Schneider made a glove-save stop on a wild pitch from Perez, which also kept a run from scoring from third; later in the game, on two different occasions, Jose Reyes hustled hard to stop a ground ball in the hole, also stopping a run from scoring; the Mets actually look pretty cool in the navy-blue hats; Ramon Castro has adopted the old Bash Brothers arm-bashing style, which I like; Aaron Heilman made things interesting in the eighth, putting the tying run on third, but escaped while protecting the lead; speaking of the bullpen, wow, hats off to Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis, Pedro Feliciano and Duaner Sanchez, and especially Joe Smith, who pitched four innings of scoreless relief; in fact, Smith ended the game with an outstanding play, picking up a weak ground ball up the third base line, hurling a side-arm throw to Carlos Delgado for the final out.
In the end, it was great to see this team keep fighting, after having their hearts ripped out in the ninth. Outstanding job, gentlemen. Now, dry off and get some rest, you have a series to win tomorrow.
The Mets complete their four-game series with the Phillies tomorrow in Philadelphia at 7:05 pm, with Pedro Martinez (2-2, 7.39 ERA) taking on Adam Eaton (3-6, 4.79 ERA).
According to the Associated Press, the Brewers have acquired LHP C.C. Sabathia from the Indians for Double-A OF Matt LaPorta and two other players.
Sabathia, who can be a free-agent at the end of the season, is 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA this season.
…good for the brewers…nice to see a small market club be bold enough to make a trade like this and go for it…
According to MLB.com, Mets LHP Billy Wagner was the only Mets player elected to the 2008 All Star Game that is to played at Yankee Stadium on July 15.
This is the sixth time Wagner, who is 0-1 with 19 saves and a 1.85 ERA in 33 games this season, has been elected to the All Star Game.
However, David Wright is one of five players eligible to be voted in as the final player added to the National League team, which you can vote for at MLB.com.
The Game:
The Mets (43-44) continue their four-game series against the first-place Phillies (48-40) tonight at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, starting at 1:35 pm.
The Lineup:
The Pitchers:

Jerry Manuel told reporters earlier today that Ryan Church will not be in today’s lineup, as he continues to suffer from a sever migraine headache.
According to Manuel, Church could have played today, but he would rather give him an extra day of rest.
Ryan Church told reporters that the pain is so bad he must avoid sunlight, adding that it typically lasts a day or two, after which he often feels like he’s been in a ‘car crash.’
Following last night’s game, Church explained to reporters that he has suffered from migraines for most of his life.
…if you have ever suffered a migraine headache, you know that this is nothing to scoff at…
Last night, a small but vocal group of readers left me no choice but
to ban them from posting comments to MetsBlog.com.
If you are suddenly unable to post comments, you may want to click here and here, and read what I wrote back in April – as it still holds true today.
If, however, after reading this site’s four-year-old comments policy, which was in effect years before my partnership with SNY, and you honestly feel you were wrongly banned, let me know.
