Prior to tonight’s game, Mets GM Omar Minaya confirmed that he had been approached by Indians GM Mark Shapiro regarding RHP C.C. Sabathia before trading the pitcher to the Brewers.
According to Minaya, Shapiro felt the Mets had the necessary players to make such a deal, but he declined.
…from what i understand, shapiro would have required Fernando Martinez and a pitcher like Jon Niese or Eddie Kunz, as well as another mid-level pitching prospect…
Sabathia, who is 6–8 with a 3.83 ERA, will be a free agent at the end of this season, during which he will likely seek a contract similar to the seven-year deal signed by Johan Santana.
…personally, i’m glad the Mets did not bite on sabathia, who will almost certainly sign with a different team after the season…right now, the Mets problem is not pitching, it’s a consistent offense…

The Mets (45–44) defeated the Phillies (48–42) by the score of 10 to 9 in Philadelphia.
For a boxscore, stats, recap, etc., go to SNY.tv.
Jose Reyes started the game with a single on the first pitch, and it didn’t stop there - as the Mets jumped out to an 8–0 lead thanks to a whole bunch of two-out hits, including two by Endy Chavez, one by Damion Easley, David Wright and even Pedro Martinez.- Pedro Martinez started the game throwing more fastballs then he used in previous starts. In fact, in his first at bat against Chase Utley, he threw seven pitches, all fastballs, on which Utley popped out. He looked strong and locked in all night, while using his fastball and other pitches and all with solid control.
- Wright hit a home run off a high, arching eephus pitch by RJ Swindell, ripping it down the left-field line.
- Ramon Castro put a gum bubble on John Maine’s hat.
- Jerry Manuel was ejected from the game for arguing a call that ended up giving Ryan Howard a home run, pulling the Phillies to within five runs.
- Geoff Jenkins, who had been in a 2–for-40 slump, clobbered a pitch from Aaron Heilman to deep right to bring the Phillies to within three runs, after having trailed by as many as nine, at which point I found myself getting very sick to my stomach.
- Billy Wagner put two runners on with no outs to start the ninth inning, thus putting the tying run at the plate – but he struck out Ryan Howard with a slider in the zone and got Pat Burrell to pop out. However, Pedro Feliz ripped a ground ball up the middle, which brought home one run, then Carlos Beltran air-mailed a ball from center field to try and peg the runner going to third, but the ball sailed beyond the bag allowing yet another runner to score, bringing the Phillies to within one run.
- Naturally, after giving me a full-blown stomach ache, Wagner got Jayson Werth to pop out for the win.
- I can’t stop shaking my head, exhaling and saying, “Jeez.”
- Seriously, nobody said this was going to be easy. Enjoy the drama, folks.
And so, finally, the Mets have pushed above .500 for the first time since June 5, to move within two losses of first place.
What’s more, the Mets took three of four in this series against the Phillies, against whom they are 7–3 this season.
The Mets begin a three-game series with the Giants in Shea Stadium on Tuesday, with Mike Pelfrey (6-6, 4.23 ERA) facing Tim Lincecum (10-1, 2.49 ERA).
Ryan Church had an MRI today on his head and neck, the results of which were negative.
Church is listed as day to day.
Church has not played since Saturday, when he left the game with a headaches and dizziness, which he told reporters stem from chronic migraines.

…to say this game is huge would be an understatement…although the game does not make or break their season, it is the biggest game of the year so far for the Mets…a game, in which will result in essentially a two-game swing in the standings…
…a Mets win would give them confidence going forward and would send a message to the Phillies, perhaps planting a seed of doubt in their minds…
…enjoy, and as always, Let’s Go Mets…

From what I can gather out of Philadelphia, Ryan Church traveled to New York early today to visit with a neurologist, as the Daily News suggested might happen in a report from this morning.
…i would expect actual news to come out on this soon, as people begin to trickle in to Citizen’s Bank Park and start asking questions…
…the word from the team and from church, so far, is that this current situation is strictly from a migraine and not related to the concussion…but, how can that be…i mean, he misses tons of time from post-concussion issues, then, all of sudden, totally out of no place, he gets a wicked migraine that forces him out of action…

I’m trying real hard not to be excited for tonight’s game, but I can’t help myself.
It seems like every time the Mets are faced with the chance to push above .500, like
they are tonight, they lose – and I’m tired of getting my hopes up, only to have them dashed.
Of course, I am a total optimist, always hoping for the best, which is why the idea of winning tonight and moving beyond .500, all while taking the series from the Phillies and advancing to within two losses of first place, is just too much to ignore.
Mets Walk-Offs and Other Minutiae asks which Sports Night character he resembled at the time of Fernando Tatis‘ go-ahead, two-run homerun during yesterday’s game.
Robby O’Daniel of Hot Foot takes a look at the confusing timeline of when the player’s ballots for this year’s All Star Game were distrubuted.
Over at the Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano thinks it’s time to relieve the player’s of their voting duties for the All Star team reserves, writing…
“The rosters for next Tuesday’s All-Star Game came out yesterday, and they were a total mess. Players who don’t belong in the game are going. Players who do belong in the game are staying home. And the culprit in almost every case was a player ballot fraught with ignorance, jealousy, personal grudges and outright neglect.”
Graziano also points out that theses reasons are also why writers vote for MVP awards and the Hall of Fame.
Tagged Mike Nichols |At New York Magazine, contributing writer Will Leitch, formerly of Deadspin, explains why Jerry Manuel with his charismatic style fits in with the legacy of Mets managers from the past more than former manager Willie Randolph ever did.
Leitch writes:
“Jerry Manuel might only be the Mets manager for the next few months, but already he has proved himself a rightful heir to Shea’s legacy in a way that Willie Randolph never was…Whereas Randolph had that Yankees’ corporate, We’re All Professionals Here attitude they prefer in the Bronx.”
…i’ll admit, i was very skeptical once manuel was named the interim manager…i thought nothing would change, as i heard manuel had very much the same demanor and style that randolph had…
…surprising, manuel is much different…setting defined roles in the bullpen, not being aprehensive with the media and making bold in-game moves…it’s quite refreshing…
Tagged Mike Nichols |David Wright, an All-Star each of the last two seasons, was not selected for this year’s game which takes place at Yankee Stadium on July 15th.
Wright, on the All-Star voting:
“It is what it is, there’s a lot of deserving guys, but it’s all about winning. The All Stars has been something special the last couple of years, if I’m there, great. If not, regroup and try to make a run in the second half…It would be quite an honor, but if not I’ll get some rest and go get ‘em in the second half.”
David Wright is one of five players eligible to be voted in as the final player added to the National League team, which you can vote for at MLB.com.
…i’m sure david is disappointed…to make it last year and to not make it now would make me feel like i had declined in some way, but hopefully he knows that isn’t the case…obviously, everyone needs to go stuff the ballots to make sure that Pat Burrell doesn’t make it over wright…
