I’m trying real hard not to be excited for tonight’s game, but I can’t help myself.
It seems like every time the Mets are faced with the chance to push above .500, like
they are tonight, they lose – and I’m tired of getting my hopes up, only to have them dashed.
Of course, I am a total optimist, always hoping for the best, which is why the idea of winning tonight and moving beyond .500, all while taking the series from the Phillies and advancing to within two losses of first place, is just too much to ignore.

Huge game. Unlike the All-Star game which is stupid now.
Why does Keith and Gary think that the Phanatic
is so great? He blows. Mr Met rules!
Would love to see that too, Matt…. My enthusiasm is tempered a bit though. We have been down this road several times before.
Yes, but we’ve usually been down that road with Castillo playing 2b.
Since June 5, Mets are 14-16.
7-1 when Castillo does not play
7-15 when Castillo does play
The Mets have also not played a game yet this season with Castro, Alou and Church in the same lineup, which is to me, the best offensive lineup they can field with the core three of Wright, Beltran and Reyes.
Agree with you 100% ride. I’ve been saying the same thing till I’m blue in the face. Castro, Church and Alou along with Wright, Reyes and Beltran is an EXTREMELY difficult line-up for an opposing pitcher to get through. That is a line-up that will average over 5 runs per game, no doubt in my mind. It’s a shame Church is down again because when he was in there, the Mets averaged 7 runs per game! And that not even with Alou in the line-up yet. With Church and Alou both in there it really, really lenghtens that line-up all the way down to the 8th place hitter (especially with Castro there). Throw in there also Easley (rather than Castillo) and you have this………..
Reyes
Beltran
Church
Wtright
Alou
Delgado
Easley
castro
Picher
That’s extremely tough for an opposing pitcher to pitch around. You can swap Betran, Church and Wright any way you want
to maximize lefty/righty combinations but the effect is the same………………no breathing room for opposing pitchers. The problem is that we just can’t get these players all healthy and playing at the same time to put that killer line-up together.
I also agree,……………..Castillo has no place on this team and if and when he comes back I hope manuel doesn’t automatically just put him back in in the No. 2 hole because the Mets will NOT win with Castillo batting second. We already witmessed waht a “Legitament” Hitter can do batting behind Reyes (Reyes gets on – Church hits a hard single = men on 1st and 3rd, no outs). castillo will never hit the ball out of the Infiled. It’s a mazing how a “Grown” man can’t muster enough strenght to hit the ball more than 60 feet especially since the pitcher provide most of the monentum with the speed of the pitch. I remember back in High school when I was facing a pitcher that was throwing 88-90 mph, all I had to do was just stick the bat out and meet the ball and it would travel at least to mid outfield. This clown takes “Full” swing and the ball barely gets to the SS!!! LOL. I don’t get it.
hahahah yeah i know the pitcher supplies the power.
Need an update on Church. I know he won’t play tonight but the doctor’s visit today will be a significant impact on the season.
The doc’s visit is just precautionary. He seems to have had migraines his entire life. If that’s the case then he’ll be OK in a day or two.
Migranes following two concussions and two DL stints are nothing to brush off. Plus the Mets FO has been pretty bad at judging these injuries and even worse at handing news out to the media. I truly hope that this is nothing, but it could be something more than just a migrane.
Think about it, if it would’ve been the same as he’s had his whole life, I doubt that they would send him back to NY to see a doctor…
Let’s take this series and never look back! LET’S GO METS!!!!
I too am excited about tonight. I will always root for the mets to come out on top and move closer to the phills. We are in good position to be in at the ASB and im expecting a strong second half for this bunch. It would be nice to win this series though and use that momentum at the homestand against Giants and Colorado. Lets Go Mets
Don’t you just love high spirits? It’s unfortunate that I have to be realistic and say that the Mets are going to lose tonight. It’s just murphy’s law. when all signs point to a win, with the Mets it’s going to be a loss.
the mets will be in 1st place by July 15
Me too Matt, I have the same feeling. History says that the Mets will lose today, and considering it is against the Phillies it will be a tough loss, but I am really looking forward to for the game today and hopefully we can win this one and I am feeling very optimistic today.
I hear that Matt! Im amped up personally…
Going above .500 is going to be big, also beating the Phillies of course, lets not forget actually winning a SERIES, in general that would nice.
GO METS
plus Petey pitching well…
We’ve been through this too many times and your hopes SHOULD NOT be up, not for the fact that we can’t put together a winning streak BUT for the fact that Pedro is on the mound. He is FINISHED. Until he and the team both come to grips with this reality, we will continue to pretend that “tonight is a big game” or “he’s a big game pitcher” or “his velocity is there, he’s going to turn the corner” or “he’s due for a win.” When a pitcher has given up 5+ ER in 5 consecutive starts a red flag should go up. Why it has not and the fans, mets brass and even the SNY broadcasting booth consistently say that he is one start away from turning the corner is beyond me. Last night was a HUGE win because tonight is an automatic loss with Pedro on the mound. We can’t win with him anymore, I love everything the man has done for this team, he revitalized a losing ballclub and helped to bring superstars to Queens, for that we should forever be thankful. That being said, enough is enough, it’s about winning now, breaking the 500 threshold and taking the NL East. If we continue to call games that Pedro pitches in “big games” or “must wins” we will be sadly mistaken as we have for just about all of his starts this year. In his statistically highest quality start of the season he still gave up 8 hits, the man is getting hit hard. If he has too much pride to retire he should as least accept a bullpen role, maybe he can become a one out pitcher and we can begin to stretch out Joe Smith to 1+ innings. If Pedro remains anywhere near our rotation for the rest of the season we’re in for a lot of trouble and heartbreak.
So who is a better alternative???
Tony arms JR??
Vargas or Niese.
The point of my original post wasn’t to campaign for an alternative to Pedro, it was simply to state why we shouldn’t get our hopes up when Pedro is on the mound. We have no choice who is going to pitch, but we should not get our hopes up. The best we can hope for is to turn it into a slug fest like we did for his last outing, however we were still on the losing end of it.
I’m not buying this ‘Pedro is finished’ talk. His fastball is up to 92mph, which to me, was the only concern for him. I thought he started to put it together after that first inning in St. Louis. I expect a big game out of him tonight…
100% wrong!
pedrolovespacman: We know already you think Pedro is washed up and can’t pitch anymore, and his record and stats this year back up your statements. But come on, give it a rest for a little while, and I mean that respectfully. Do we have another altermative at this moment? I also wish we did, but the fact is the Mets are probably going to ride him out till the end of the season in hopes he will somehow, someway find a way to tap into all his years of experience and pitching knowledge and learn how to get hitters out again. Let’s play devil’s advocate and say Pedro goes out there tonight and throws a 4-hit, 1 ER into the 6th or 7th, would you still say he’s washed up? Would you say that it was a “Lucky” start? or “One good start means nothing”?
I know you are a Die hard Mets fan just like the rest of here and at the end your criticism and conclusion about Pedro will most likely (you see, I happen to agree with you) bare out, but the Mets are just not going to throw in the towel this early regarding Pedro’s career as a NY Mets. So, all we’re left with is ‘Hope” that he finds a way to figgure it out and become an effective pitcher again. For the Mets sake, I hope he does, tonight will go a long way if he can give us a decent performance. Fingers crossed.
Hey Matt, any chance you can ban pedrolovespacman? Nothing that vulgar or inappropriate; his opinion just happens to annoy me. Can you ban him please?
As long as he doesn’t get into name calling by using terms like “Idiot, Moron, retard , etc” then the man is entitled to his opion just like the rest of us, whether we agree or not. It’s a free forum. Name calling and insults will not be tolerated though as Matt has proven by permanently banning many already. I happen to agree with him that Pedro seems to be washed up, I just don’t bring it up every other post! LOL
I don’t understand – last year Pedro came back and did a fine job and everyone was happy. This year he gets injured, comes back, has a few bad starts (HELLO – he is NOT in mid-season form) and the same people who were cheering to sign him to an extension last year are not screaming that he’s washed up and done. don’t you think he deserves to take the ball and work on his mechanics and make some adjustments? Do you really think that a guy with his resume *just* loses it? If Pedro is healthy, he’ll be a good pitcher. Certainly better than Vargas or Niese can be in 2008. We just have to be patient and let him work out the kinks – guys like Pedro don’t just fall off the radar…he’s not a one-year wonder fellas…
Here is the post I posted below but it directly answers your question…………………………….
I’ hoping that it’s just taking him some time to figgure what his game plan should be as far as which pitches to throw in which situation and also getting better command of his location. You’re right, his velocity is certainly there which is very, very encouraging! If the radar showed only 86-87 max, then I’d be worry, although there are many pitchers (Great Pitchers) that don’t need to throw hard (Maddux, Glavine, etc.) Since it’s all about knowing “HOW” to pitch and setting up hitters,……………..then Pedro is definitely not lacking in that department. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he went on a 5 or 6 game winning streak. Nothing about Pedro will surprise me actually.
Good use of reverse psychology! Now LET’S GO METS!
I am looking forward to it also. Despite the loss on Friday night, which was ridiculous considering how well Johan pitched, I feel like the Mets have shown more fight lately than they have all season. Even the games they lose they are still coming back and making a game out of it. If I’m optimistic I would say that you don’t just go from .500 type play to winning every game; it’s a gradual process that hopefully the Mets are now at, a point to get their confidence back and get into a rhythm. Of course, the pessimist in me says, how many times have we been here before, on the eve of what appeared to be the start of a season changing swing, and they come out and play like a little league team.
What can you do but hope for the best. Let’s go Mets baby
A question for the posters here, how do you guys feel about Willie Bloomquist? He is a blue collar player who has skill and can make significant impact. He can play any position in the field and he is a right handed batter which is much needed in our lineup. Seattle will probably look to rebuild and get some prospects. Willie Bloomquist does not even start in Seattle so it might not even require as much for him. Only problem is that I don’t know how willing Seattle would be willing to give him up. But I would love for Omar to get Willie…Bloomquist.
Devid DeJesus >>>>>>>>>>>> Willie Bloomquist
Nobody named Willie is necessary on this team!
Bloomquist is a .260 career hitter with 6 home runs total in over 1,000 at bats. Might as well ask Rey Ordonez to come out of retirement instead.
.312, 9 HR, 43 RBI 6 SB, .370 OBP
.315, 9 HR, 45 RBI
i think we would all love to get dejesus (esp me bcuz he is a hometown hero in my area, coming from central jersey) but do you really think the royals would give him up? i dont see the mets trading too many more prospects and thats what it would require to get him. I wouldnt mind bloomquist tho, if the mets could get him for something cheap. LETS GO METS TONIGHT!!!
Two things about tonight’s game:
1) I hope Hojo sits down with the hitters and goes over tape of our recent godawful at-bats against this clown, and they come up with an approach for tonight’s game and stick to it.
2) Pedro has been getting lit up early and often recently. The first 6 at-bats will tell us if he has it or not.
This game, I feel, is our defining moment thus far this season to draw a line in the sand (vis-a-vis where we stand one-on-one with the Phillies and with getting over and staying over .500).
If we win, we have capitalized on the past 2 victories. If we lose, we have turned them into another tease/
for the record, have you looked at Eaton’s stats against us this year? 5.73 ERA 11 hits, 7 runs in 11 IP
But we never beat him. Not ever. He pitches to the score. If our starter throws up a zero, so does Eaton. If our starter gives up 6 runs, Eaton will give up 5. He always keeps the Phillies in the game (against us).
Well we already busted through the “Grand Slam” Wall during the Yankees series…
We did something this year we had not done all of last year…
Next up: Win more than 5 games in a row.
Bottom line, there is simply no reason to not beat Adam Eaton. Enough is enough. He is a horrible pitcher, plain and simple. His control is nothing special and he is not overpowering. Every other team kills him. If he throws a 6 inning 1 run gem tonight, it will be a disgrace. It’s time this team puts an L on his Mets career record.
Don’t you believe the Phillies are looking at Pedro’s numbers and thinking the SAME EXACT THING?!!?
But Pedro has a track record of being great. Eaton is and always was garbage. Big difference.
yeha a track record many years ago
No!
“there is simply no reason to not beat Adam Eaton”
You’re talking about a team that nearly got swept by the Marlins and got shut out by RA Dickey….AT HOME!
Please…….you’re setting yourself up for a let down. And oh yeah, Pedro’s pitching tonight….
This is also the same team that blasted Chien Ming Wang out of Yankee Stadium when he was 6-1 2.90 and being hailed as the best pitcher in the AL. Look, it’s OK to lose to Adam Eaton, but they’ve done so so many times already and have never won a single game. I think it’s about time that changes, that’s all.
As I wrote this morning, “A Win Tonight Is Essential For The Mets”
Why do we hear that so much? Why is THIS particular win SOO essential? So much so that it makes it stand out more than other wins vs. Philly or Atlanta or Florida or Washington. It seems to me like every time there’s a game played in which a series can be won, all you see is “essiantial” or “must win” all over the blogs. Don’t you think the team already knows that? Don’t you think every single series-deciding game is approached as a must-win?
There’s no point of over hyping something that’s already 10 times over hyped (in a 162 game season). In all reality, until there are 10 games left in the season, no one game is “essential” or a “must win”. Sure, they’re important, but losing or winning one game does not set a tone for the remainder of the season – a string of games maybe buys that argument. If you really think about it, the only sport where a non-clinching regular season game can be labeled as “essential” or “must win” is football. In any other sport, you live to see another day…
Who’s pitching today? Pedro? uh oh….. can’t be too optimistic based on his performance lately.
shut up willie, u were already fired, wasnt that enough
Well said. Get behind your team Willierocks, or get off the ship.
I would be excited if it wasn’t Pedro on the mound.
It’d be great if he took it like a man and retired before tonight’s game. Niese or another option at double A would give us a better chance to win.
I hope your not really serious about that.
You don’t think Niese could go 4-5 innings with 5ER? Because that’s exactly what Pedro has done his past 5 outings.
Even Heilman would give us a better chance to win… haaaa
How quickly we all forget how excited we as Mets fans were last year every time Pedro took the mound in September when he came back (note he is not the furutre hall of famer who gave up all those runs in 1/3 of an inning against the Marlins). The electricity in Shea when he started against the Astros (and pitched well I might add) was palatable. Between now and then, has he really lost all of the skill he had? I find that hard to believe.
I am excited about tonights game as i too believe that the Mets have been a little more resilient of late. Hopefully they can start winning more of the close ones and gradually build confidence which can then lead this team to a 5+ game win streak we all have been waiting for. I think Pedro can be a contributer to this team but he will have to start showing us something starting with tonight because i am sure all of our patience is running thin. This is the type of game we all have gotten excited about over the last few months only to be let down, lets see if this team is slowly turning the corner and can actually give us a reason to be so optimistic…GO METS!
Any word on Church? Alou?
-Ken
Pedro has a lot to offer, he is not finished yet.
Sarcasm? Tell me what you have seen from him this year that tells you so. Don’t tell me velocity when his fastballs have no bite and no movement. Don’t tell me his offspeed and breaking pitches as they hang like they are sitting on a tee. What have you seen? The man has given up 5ER or more in his last 5 starts so what can he offer other than giving the outfield a good exercise?
CC Sabathia had an era over his first 35 innings of over 7. Pedro is okay. His arm is in better shape then it has been in like 5 years. This is his sprint training. His curveball and changeup didn’t just go away. He will be fine, and you will all feel stupid for doubting the best pitcher of this generation.
Hey Lets go Mets!!!
Please don’t compare CC Sabathia and 2008 Pedro Martinez in regards to how to lower their ERAs ever again. CC may have got rocked his first four starts, but how many double digit strikeout shuts out starts has Pedro or will Pedro put up this season? Thank you and goodbye.
This is his spring training? Really? I don’t know too many pitchers who get to go through spring training healthy, then get injured in their first start, come back, make another 7 starts and it is still considered “spring training.” Give it a rest, he’s finished. Doubting the best pitcher of our generation? He was the best pitcher of the late 90s/early 2000s, it is nearly 2010. Pedro is among the best 30 starting pitchers in baseball. Some of you never let legends die, you’re the same ones that were clamoring for Scottie Pippen to sign with the Knicks last year. Just stop.
That meant to read “Pedro is not among the best 30 starting pitchers in baseball today.”
We’ll take your word for it that Pedro is finished, since you’re an esteemed scout and abseball mind.
You’re a loser posting on metsblog.com like everyone else here. You know absolutely nothing about baseball and your opinion is valued by nobody. Do everyone on here a favor and never post again.
To be totally fair, Pedro was absolutely dominant in 2004. That’s mid-2000’s. And we’re not even close to 2010 yet – what twilight zone are you living in? You make it sound like it’s been 10 years since he was effective, when in effect, it’s been 2. You want to voice your opinion, fine, but don’t push it on people with that garbage…
pedro best is now a 4 or 5
I agree Joe. He has to stay away from the 1 inning syndrome he has had. He is still getting his feet under him.
But since Old School has been on a few times recently, here is my message for Pedro. We need you now tonight, we fu**in need you more then ever.
hopefully tonight is the night the Mets and Pedro turn things around.
Maybe I am being too optimistic but we are only 3 games back in the loss column and have yet to play anywhere near our best. With any bit of luck and slightly better execution we would be on a six game winning streak right now . I know we can’t go back and count the two one run blown lead losses as wins but at least we are finally on a run of good games played. A win tonight will be huge
Pedro has a lot to offer: a lot of walks, home runs, singles, doubles, triples, etc….that is before he gets injured again.
He will get TAGGED! all night.
Happy Birthday Willie!!
Because of his age, and his lack of competitive pitching for almost 18 months, I expected some bumps along the road on his comeback trail.
He has a lot of pride, and I believe that it will translate into a more effective Pedro as he continues to work his way back to form.
I’ve seen enough of this guy throughout his career to know that we shouldn’t count him out just yet. he recently said he’s not going out like this, and that when he does retire it will be when he’s riding high again. I believe him.
Pedro’s mental focus is gone. He blamed his last shelled outing on the rain delay, he said it was a “message,” he’s saying anything now to make people still believe, point is when he steps out on the mound it’s clear he’s finished. He has no confidence. It’s hard to regain confidence when you’ve got a 7.39 era in 7 starts and get rocked every start.
I think the Mets are screwed up Mentally, they are not enjoying the game like they should… Everybody is worried about “Doing too much” or “If I dont contrubute today we will lose” or “The Bullpen will blow the lead anyway”.
This team will look fine and as soon as the pitching hits a bump in the road they look depressed and sapped.
I dont think we will hit any large winning streak untill the entire team or at least most of it starts enjoying the game again and stop worrying.
Matt, I’m geared up to for tonights game too.. but having my heart ripped one too many times leaves me a bit doubtful…. I still believe don’t get me wrong, but these damm these guys kill me!! I still need to see some more of Pedro to give up on the man.. remember this guy has not pitched in a long time and has probably realized he needs to adjust his game again, which I feel confident he can. Pedro will come around!
I feel the same exact way Matt, I’m looking forward to this game as if it were a playoff game, and I know I shouldn’t cause the Mets have lost every time i’ve felt this way.
i am also glad that our manager feels that this is a huge game as well
Let’s Go Mets!!!!!
Huge game tonight. Hope they play like it.
Let’s Go Mets!!!
I know they won the World Series last year but why are the Red Sox always on national TV? They are on it literally 2 times a week. I mean switch it up a little bit. Mets vs. Phils is a bigger game tonight then Twins vs. Red Sox.
ummmm ESPN commentary? no thanks!
I know they are terrible, I was just saying that we see Boston way too much on national TV
Guess it’s a choice: national forum with annoying announcers, or friendly context & GKR…I’ll take the latter every time (although Jon Miller is indeed flaky enough to be interesting, Morgan always ruins the broadcast in some way…although he’s nowhere near as bad as McCarver or Buck)
Well, for us out of towners that have Directv, but not a 5 LMB Directv dish, it’s the only way to see a met game in HD. I just synch it to mlb.com’s broadcast of WFAN’s feed.
thank god mets r hardky on espn.. can u stand those fools on eppn and sunday night baseball is the worst. how can u listen to joe morgan that thinks somethinhg happened but never happened
I dont understand why so many of you can’t just relax and enjoy this amazing pennant race before us. So many of you have been jaded by the last time the Mets won a WS in 1986 and dominated from start to finish. Wake up! That was a rarity, most championships are hard fought like this year’s will be.
Because the Mets aren’t playing well as a team so far this year, that’s why I can’t “enjoy” the pennant race. If the team was 10 games over .500 it might be a different story.
i agree. a hard fought pennant race with the phillies would be great.
They’ve suckered me more than a few times this year. Tonight I am going to be a sucker again. But if they win tonight, the next test will be the next 6 games against Shea, against two awful teams. If they can win tonight and then take at the very worst, 4 of 6 against the Giants and Rockies, then I will really be a believer. If not, then it’s time to give up the season for real this time.
If they can take the game tonight and go on to win the remaining series before the break with the Giants and Rockies they would be 3 games over .500 and in nice shape to make a second half run.
Though what will probably happen is they win tonight and lose the next two series and go back below .500.
This probably is not the right thread to be posting this on, but I saw above that a poster wanted David DeJesus. While he would be a good pick-up, the Royals might ask for something for him.
I think, and have thought for a long time, that the ideal guy for the Mets to target is Raul Ibanez.
1) He is a middle of the order bat
2) He is a proven run producer
3) He is a left fielder
4) He has an expiring contract
5) The Mariners will look to dump their players sooner or later to try and restock and fill some organizational holes.
Maybe the Mets can get by giving them a couple of minor leaguers (maybe a AAA reliever to help their shot pen) to get this guy.
Ibanez is not the best guy out there, but we do not have much to give up, and he will probably not cost us a lot.
Also, is there any chance we can try to work out a deal where we get Dontrelle Willis and 5 million dollars. The Tigers have him pitching in the minors, and his value could not be any lower. I have always thought that he belonged in Queens, and I still feel that way. Even during his bad season last year, I still felt wary about the Mets having to face him. If we can get him for a reliever, that would be a nice gamble to take, especially with 1/2 of our rotation going to free agency after this year.
If Church is out for any extended period of time, i think we can expect to see him on the mets roster before long
Ehh.
Ibanez’ OPS is always much lower than you’d expect from a guy who consistently puts up .290 20 95 or so.
He doesn’t walk very much, and I don’t believe he hits a ton of doubles.
He also really, really sucks in the OF. He’s probably a little worse than Alou, at 50,000 years old.
He’d be an upgrade over Tatis/Anderson, obviously, but I think he’d cost a lot more than he’s actually worth.
When Castillo comes back, if he hasn’t been outright Wally Pipped, Easley would provide close to the same offense and defense in left.
See that is where I think that you are wrong. I think Ibanez is underrated. He is going to have 55-60 rbi at the break. That puts him on pace for nearly 100 this season. Over the last two years, he has driven in over 100 runs.
Damion Easley is not a 100 rbi man.
Ibanez is not a good left fielder, but we need pop in the line-up. He should come cheap and he is a perfect bat to either protect Delgado or even bat before him.
I would even be comfortable batting Beltran in the 2 hole, Church in the 3, Wright in the 4th spot, Ibanez in the 5th, and then Delgado 6th.
If ANYONE but Pedro was pitching tonight, I’d be a lot more pumped. However, he is, and he’s showed no ability to pitch to a good hitting lineup. I’m very concerned. Pedro Martinez is as close to finished as you can be and the only hope is that the Mets wake up and realize that Adam Eaton is Adam Eaton and they take part in a shootout that’ll be decided by both team’s bullpens.
I’m really sad that I have to miss most, if not all, of tonight’s game. This is one of the must-watch games of the season!
I really want to be excited about tonite’s game, and as it gets closer to first pitch, I likely will…However, getting punched in the gut during each awful performance in these must-win type games has got me a bit gunshy. Also, Pedro’s season thus far has been a bit unsettling. I would have loved to see Pelf get the nod tonite…that would certainly get me a bit more pumped…Either way, LETS GO METS
I can tell you’re anxious–why else would you be counting losses back instead of games back?
Well, losses back you can NEVER make up, games back …………..you can. There’s the difference.
u can always make up losses back…see the last two games
Unlike some of the pessimists I’ve read on this thread, I’m not giving up on this game before it’s even started – no matter who is pitching.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed – Let’s Go Mets !!
Same here my man. Baseball’s a funny game. If it was that easy to know ahead of time who is going to win, bookies would lose their shirt, and trust me………………..they don’t.
People try and look at pitching match-ups and think they know for sure who is going to win and guess what, it never trurns out the way you expect. If we used that logic to figgure out who is going to win when Olie is scheduled to pitch, you’re better off just flipping a coin! LOL
Lets Go Mets!!!!! Come on Pedro!!!!!
I am too hyped for tonight myself.
I’m with you Matt… I’m very excited about tonight’s game… which also means, of course, that if they lose, I will be completely miserable.
I do think they are about to turn that proverbial corner (you know, the one Willie kept alluding to?) and will have a big second half.
I want Philly to feel the pain of a collapse almost more than I want oxygen.
it will be a good sign if pedro gives up 3-4 tuns on 6 inngins of work
Im gonna bag my pessimism for the night.
LETS GO METS~!
I am sitting here hoping th eweather clears (just finished pouring at my house), since I am going to the game tonight (I live in SJ). At least the weather map looks like there should be a clearing for the game.
couple of points:
1) are all the same posters screaming that Pedro is done, get rid of him, etc. the same ones that until recently were screaming that Pelfrey was garbage, get rid of him, trade him for a rosin bag, etc.?
2) this is a huge game, if the Mets really expect to get back into the race. Not a must win, but very big. They win tonight, and it isn’t impossible that they could be in 1st by the ASB (if the Phils decide to cooperate!) Heck, if the Mets win, the Phils will only be 6 over .500, not exactly setting the world on fire.
3) I really can’t believe Pedro is done, since his arm seems to be stronger thn it has in years. Hey, maybe that is why he isn’t getting the movement on the pitches? Too much life in the arm? In any case, he is too smart of a guy not to make adjustments, especially if he has a nice new arm to work with.
I’ hoping that it’s just taking him some time to figgure what his game plan should be as far as which pitches to throw in which situation and also getting better command of his location. You’re right, his velocity is certainly there which is very, very encouraging! If the radar showed only 86-87 max, then I’d worry, although there are many pitchers (Great Pitchers) that don’t need to throw hard (Maddux, Glavine, etc.) Since it’s all about knowing “HOW” to pitch and setting up hitters,……………..then Pedro is definitely not lacking in that department.
Tonights game is huge… but i still think we gotta be happy with atleast a 4-4 tough road trip
Happy…………………………NO. acceptable……………………….maybe…..
Relieved……………………………….YES!!!!!!! LOL
why are people such haters on here? Yes, we are all well aware that the pitching staff haven’t been on their game lately… but baseball is extremely unpredictable game and things could surprise you. I don’t get it pedropacman, why even bother wasting your energy away insulting Pedro before tonight’s game?
He’s a compulsive Pedro Hater, he can’t help himself! LOL
Is there a Pedro Haters Anonymous? LOL
PHA?
I just wanted to make one quick comment about Pedro. I still believe Pedro can help this team. He still has enough stuff to win and he is smart enough to find a way to win with that stuff. All of you who insult Pedro and want him gone better hope you are wrong about him because if you are right then the Mets will not win this division. We are all Mets fans here so insulting a pitcher who is essential to this teams success and ability to go where we all want them to go is beyond baffling to me…deep down i know you all want Pedro to succeed…we need him to…GO Mets.

boscov is my hero!!
yesterday’s game was the big one. i’ll be rooting as hard as anyone, but they can lose tonight and will still be okay. if they had lost last night (and they tried very hard to lose last night!), tonight would have been a MUST win. now, chill out everyone. we are guaranteed a split, after splitting with the cards, all on the road, and we come home to play two sub-.500 teams. don’t make every game a must.
They really have to take this series…if for nothing else to prove to themselves that they belong at the top of the division. I think a split here is very disappointing, especially since they had all the chances in the world to be up 3-0 in this series, instead of 2-1. By splitting the series, its as if they are driving a car thats stuck in the mud…the wheels are turning, but you aren’t going anywhere. It will certainly help their confidence level coming back home 2.5 out of first, especially considering the fact that this team has been known recently to play down to its competition.
Yup, and Phillies typically struggle after the let down of facing the Mets(because they’re such gamers and all right?), so a win tonight and a strong finish could put us in first at the break.
I’m going tonight….just wondering who was there a CBP during rain delay on Sunday. Someone on Philly radio (WIP) relayed a ridiculous story about a streaker (wearing only a phillie jersey) out sliding on the rain-soaked tarp. Security ran out, and the guy bolted into centerfield and hid in the tarp tube!!!!!
It took security about 10 minutes to fish the guy out….now that’s crazy!
I just hope that Pedro proves to people that he is not yet DONE…last time I saw Pedro at CBP we most 16-2 and Pedro lasted one inning (when he injured his calf)……UGH!!!!
sorry guys but I am the eternal pessimist. there is not a shot in hell we win tonight. it’s the prototypical Mets letdown game. As long as I remember that, I won’t set myself up for a letdown.
So you’re a “Glass half Empty” kinda guy huh? hat’s like saying “I won’t go ask that girl if she want to go out with me” because you don’t want to be set up for a let down. Life is short my man, just go for the Gusto!!!
Mets Win!!! Pedro Wins !!!!
Alright, alright then………………..enough Pom-pom waving. Gees. LOL
LET’S GO METS, LET’S GO METS, LET’S GO METS, LET’S GO METS
Taken from the beer league blog:
don’t want to sound like a blood-thirsty ignoramus, but I’d like to see the Phillies send a message in tonight’s game.
It was tough having to watch the Mets prance around during and after yesterday’s game like a bunch of cocky p***You know if Jerry Manuel told Pedro to set the tone for tonight’s game he would send a message real clear.
Jackass cause you guys never jump around on home plate
Yeah, his ranting about Pedro being washed up is getting really old, hard to take him seriously when he keeps ranting and raving about Pedro’s last 5 starts. I will say this though, I tend to be in his corner as far as what I think Pedro will, beable to give going forward, but at the same time, I’m hoping both myself and Pacman are wrong. As a mets fan since 1968 (yeah, I go way back) I always hold out for the positive and this game has taught me one thing, and that is……………..never count a savy, smart ball player like Pedro. He’s forgotten more about pitching than most pitchers today know.
