Note: Church Migraine Not Related

by Mike Nichols on July 7th, 2008 at 10:36 am

Ryan Church missed yesterday’s game, while continuing to experience severe pain and dizziness from a migraine headache, which he, the team, and his neurologist insists has nothing to do with the concussion he suffered in May.

However, according to the Daily News, Church had been scheduled to fly back to New York on Sunday to be re-examined, adding, “and now he’s poised to miss even more time.”

Since returning from the the disabled list on June 29, Church is batting .333 with 2 2B and 1 RBI in 21 at-bats.

…take your time to get well and get right, ryan…

Health: El Duque Update

by Mike Nichols on July 7th, 2008 at 10:27 am

Orlando Hernandez tossed 62 pitches, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out six in four innings yesterday during a minor-league rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast League Mets.

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, the Mets are preparing El Duque to be a starter.

…el duque doesn’t deserve to be added to the starting rotation, not with Mike Pelfrey gaining confidence and Oliver Perez pitching well…

Note: Mighty Joe Smith

by Regis Courtemanche on July 7th, 2008 at 8:58 am

In his last night’s win, Joe Smith retired Carlos Ruiz to end the 10th inning with a runner on second, then pitched a 1–2–3 inning in the 11th, including a pop-out by Chase Utley.  Smith then went on to pitch a scoreless 12th, including a pop-out from Ryan Howard.

Jerry Manuel, on Smith:

“Joe Smith did a tremendous job for us.”

In 41 appearances this season, Smith is 1–1 with a 3.22 ERA, during which right-handed batters are hitting .205 against him.

…phenomenal job joe…just what the team needed at just the right time…

Quote: Pick Each Other Up

by Regis Courtemanche on July 7th, 2008 at 8:50 am

In the 12th inning, with one out, Carlos Delgado on first and the game tied, Fernando Tatis hit a home run to deep center field for the game winning run.

Billy Wagner, after the game:

“Church said he was gonna hit a home run. I mean, I think knowing that guys believe in each other, knowing that guys are pick each other up when they’re having a tough day, I think that’s how you start to build. Guys are starting to believe that guys are picking them up, that you don’t have to go out there and have your A-game every day…And that’s exactly what it was today.”

Jerry Manuel on Tatis’ clutch hit:

“Big, big hit by Tatis…It showed that we didn’t quit.”

…it was obviously great to win such a hard fought game…good job by tatis to pick billy up…

Quote: Perez Was Awesome

by Regis Courtemanche on July 7th, 2008 at 8:44 am

Oliver Perez let up just four hits and no runs, while walking two and striking out six, during seven innings in a win yesterday against the Phillies.

Perez, on Citizens Bank Park:

“It’s tough to keep the ball down in this stadium, but I fought through it and did my job.  I wanted to put my team in a good position, and I did that.”

Jerry Manuel after the game:

“Perez was awesome…He pitched extremely well.  His last inning might have been one of his better innings of the night…So, that tells you he may have the endurance to even go further.”

In his last two starts, since making an adjustment to his windup, Perez has pitched 14 innings, during which he has allowed just one run and 10 base runners while striking out 14.

The Mets are 4–1 in his last five starts.

…albeit a small sample size, it’s fair to say that perez has become more consistent which was always my biggest problem with him…hopefully the perez that showed up yesterday shows up more often…

Note: Wagner’s Blown Save

by Regis Courtemanche on July 7th, 2008 at 8:30 am

In the ninth inning, with the Mets up 2–0, Billy Wagner let up a single to Shane Victorino and with two outs and two strikes on Jayson Werth, he hung a slider that Werth hit for a home run to tie the game.

Wagner then rebounded to retire Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins to force the game in to extra innings.

Wagner, on the blown save:

“That’s going to happen. I’d like to have bounced that slider, but I hung it and Jayson hit it. But, we came back and won it, the guys did great, they picked me up and we won and that’s fantastic.”

…true, a win’s a win, but i was watchin this game while on vacation and it brought back all of  the stress i had worked so hard to remove…

Quote: Battle and Win

by Regis Courtemanche on July 7th, 2008 at 8:22 am

After last night’s extra inning win over the Phillies, Billy Wagner tried to look ahead, saying:

“We’ve had to grind it out and battle and win and we’ve found ways to do it, and we’ve got to be excited to come in here Monday and try to really make this a good road trip.”

David Wright, on the game:

“It’s a win. There’s only so many of these stepping stones, we’ve got to put it together and play a few good games here before the All-Star game. But, we’ll take it, it’s a win.”

Manager Jerry Manuel on how the team played:

“They were resilient today…It’s very large for us. Hopefully, this will be a springboard for us to take off. Monday is another big game for us.”

…i think it’s safe to say that every game is a big one from here on out…the mets have surely had to battle so far in this series, and hopefully they can close the series out on a high note tonight…
