Oliver Perez let up just four hits and no runs, while walking two and striking out six, during seven innings in a win yesterday against the Phillies.
Perez, on Citizens Bank Park:
“It’s tough to keep the ball down in this stadium, but I fought through it and did my job. I wanted to put my team in a good position, and I did that.”
Jerry Manuel after the game:
“Perez was awesome…He pitched extremely well. His last inning might have been one of his better innings of the night…So, that tells you he may have the endurance to even go further.”
In his last two starts, since making an adjustment to his windup, Perez has pitched 14 innings, during which he has allowed just one run and 10 base runners while striking out 14.
The Mets are 4–1 in his last five starts.
…albeit a small sample size, it’s fair to say that perez has become more consistent which was always my biggest problem with him…hopefully the perez that showed up yesterday shows up more often…

guess dan fixed him up in 10 minutes because ollie looked great..not dominating but great. He was able to pitch himself out of trouble the whole night and was able to pick up his teammates in the process(marlon). I believe ollie demands that endy play in whatever game he is pitching lol. Great outing by OP and i hope he can continue this because we are going to have a monster 2nd half….and i want him to be a big part of it.
Speaking of Marlon Anderson, good god is he horrible this year or what?
UMM, MATT: Perez didn’t get the win. The way you’ve written your opening sentence, it’s implying that he did. Just sayin…
u mean regis??
ooooooooooo burned….
sample size is way too small, Perez looked awfully well fixed under Peterson last year at times.
Exactly. I hope Minaya doesn’t drink the Kool Aid and sign Ollie to a long term, big dollar contract (which will no doubt be demanded by Bora$). It’s great that Ollie has been pitching well of late but I’m ready to get off the Olliecoaster.
Pelfry is coming into his own and along with Santana and Maine the Mets will have 3 good-to-excellent pitchers next year. If someone like Jon Neise can step up to be the fifth starter, Omar will “only” need to find a decent #3/4 pitcher during the offseason.
unfortunately, there really is nobody that you can expect to replace him, and with the big lefties in the division, Ollie is a fantastic weapon. I feel like he is all but gone, but I think the Mets really do need to make a move on him.
But as Bora$ will be involved, the price will be way too much in terms of both dollars and years. Add to it the fact that the Yankees will probably be in the mix and the price will only go higher.
I’d rather Omar work his creative magic and come up with an unexpected alternative.
It was the best pitching performance I’ve seen from the Mets this year. After the first inning Ollie was almost unhittable. Too bad he doesn’t figure into the decision. Definitely deserves a game ball, along with Tatis.
Now, please stay somewhere close to this for a few more games and don’t go haywire on us like so often happens.
So is Perez a met in 09?
To early to tell imo. Id wait till the seasons over and evaluate him then..to much baseball left….but hes only helping his chances with performances like this
I’m just thinking anyone we sign in free agency isn’t going to be that much cheaper and is likely going to be over 30 and less effective. Unless it’s Sheets he’s just over 30 and always injured.
I hear ya gina and your probably right. If this kid really did correct his problem then we go a gem on our hands in regard to age/stuff. That said we gotta hope he gets consistant and figures it out. If that happens i would not be opposed to having ollie for a few more years. But given his history of being great for a few games and then regressing…I want a bigger sample size of ollie under dan werthen before we keep him longterm. With CC gone to the brew crew..no doubt another team will be interested in the services of perez..
I say you ride the wave and if he has 2 good starts in a row sell him off if you can get some top notch prospects. If he puts together a streak of 8 straight quality starts there may be a few teams that will turn into believers with this guy - if there was ever a time to sell high, this may be it…
I have no problem with this idea, but I think there’s 0 chance the front office does it. Especially if we’re still only few games back.
I agree. I dont see the HO moving perez especially now since it appears he has found his stride.
It’s a tough decision. Do you trust him to stay in this form and make a push or do you sell high? I agree with Dirty’s assessment - there’s just too much history of inconsistency. In my mind, what it really comes down to is, if you don’t think you can sign him in the offseason, might as well move him for something top quality. There’s no reason why we can’t pick someone up who can replace him and help the team…
agreed
No chance in my opinion.
Reason being, he is too unfocused too often. I think he’s a constant headache to manage.
Bottom line though, especially if he finishes the season well… he is going to get some serious money - more than he is worth. And the Mets are already paying 3 SPs more than their value:
Pedro (love him, but it’s true)
Santana (I’m sorry Johan - you signed that contract to win games, not just “give the guys a chance to win”. He’s way overpaid… and just will decline)
El Duque (I want his job)
Also, when John Maine’s contract comes up, he will demand what Ollie Perez will, and I think he’s worth it more than OPerez is.
I agree with you that the mets are paying guys more than their worth but next season i would not be opposed to offer pedro a decent contract(that is if he doesnt retire) if pedro can stay healthy the rest of the year. I think pedro can be a reliable back of the rotation guy at this point. Duque has to be gone after this year. And ollie i mean lets say he finally figures it out and goes to win 15 games this season…why wouldnt you sign him back up. Hes young and a lefty with great stuff. We have seen what ollie can do when hes on the ball and if he finds it this year then i want him back. One less hole we have to worry about.
And a note on santana..A pitchers job is to give their team a chance to win. A pitcher does not win a game a team does. IMO he is doing his job and out of all the pitchers he gives us the best chance to win and thus his pay is in accordance to that belief.
Agree with you on Santana. He has a ERA under 3 but the team can’t win with him on the mound. What was that last stat - something like 10 runs of support in the last 5 games? I don’t think it’s fair to expect anyone to win like that…
My vote is split on Perez. I really doubt that the Mets will give in to the kind of money that Boras will demand for him. So if we’re talking the best value, it may peak over the next 2-3 weeks if he has another 3-4 good starts. If he does have those good starts, I’d deal him, but for top-notch grade-A prospects, nothing less. It’s good that Sabathia was traded - makes the market that much thinner and Perez’s value that much higher…
I definitely agree on the Johan comments (you can tell the lack of offense in almost EVERY start is starting to get to him when he’s interviewed), but I don’t think Pedro is going to have another full season in the majors. I think offering him another deal would be burning up money. He hasn’t actually played for a full season since 2005 and I just don’t see him doing it again…
That being said, he’ll go free agent, sign with the Marlins or something and win the Cy Young again.
The Mets can afford it.
Pedro and el duque make nothing next year.
Even if Pelfrey is awesome, we still need two starters for next year, no reason not to keep Perez around.
I would certainly like to see it. Boras the banker is certainly going to have a big influence over the situation.
I posted this in the other thread but I’ll post it again here. Free agent, and possible free agent, pitchers next year, under 40.

How many of these guys would you rather have than Perez? Sabathia and Sheets are the only ones I think are a better bet and Sheets is always injured, which is something we don’t need, and I can’t imagine the front office carries two pitchers with Santana’s contract, which is likely what Sabathia would ask for.
I unforntuely was driving from NY to Cincy during the game. So I heard the XM Satelite Radio broadcast which was the Phillies home broadcast. Harry Kalas has an amazaing voice… but what a homer!!! He was talking like Perez was pitching aweful and the gettting all this help from the umpires.
I can’t stand Kalas. I live in Pa and have to listen to that ass clown. He gives no credit to the opposing team, and always complains about the strike zone.
he sounds so boring…The mobile alert I got on Friday for Schneider’s go ahead double had no emotion whatsoever…
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…the Peterson firing will benefit Perez the most. They just never seemed on the same page.
The verdict on that is still out…. There is no question, Perez was better with Rick Petterson than he was with the Pirates
IMO, Perez is able to be a little more relaxed now that he is out from under the Jacket. I think that being able to have a dialogue with your pitching coach is a bigger deal that some realize. Instead of him trying to improvise mid-game more, the pitching coach allows him to do these improvisations in his bullpens so they can actually work on them. i.e moving to the middle of the rubber…
Agreed Cuban.
Warthen coming in with a philosophy of working with a pitcher’s strengths rather than the Pitching Coach’s framework really seems to be working wonders with Ollie. But, as has been pointed out earlier, Ollie has shown flashes of absolute brilliance in the past only to come crashing back to earth.
Let’s hope he continues to flourish under Warthen…. when on, he is a beast.
Maybe it was Peterson who brought him crashing back to earth. maybe the flashes were him trying to assert himself and learn his strengths, rather then pitching to Peterson’s.
