But as Bora$ will be involved, the price will be way too much in terms of both dollars and years. Add to it the fact that the Yankees will probably be in the mix and the price will only go higher.

I'd rather Omar work his creative magic and come up with an unexpected alternative.

It's a tough decision. Do you trust him to stay in this form and make a push or do you sell high? I agree with Dirty's assessment - there's just too much history of inconsistency. In my mind, what it really comes down to is, if you don't think you can sign him in the offseason, might as well move him for something top quality. There's no reason why we can't pick someone up who can replace him and help the team...

unfortunately, there really is nobody that you can expect to replace him, and with the big lefties in the division, Ollie is a fantastic weapon. I feel like he is all but gone, but I think the Mets really do need to make a move on him.

I definitely agree on the Johan comments (you can tell the lack of offense in almost EVERY start is starting to get to him when he's interviewed), but I don't think Pedro is going to have another full season in the majors. I think offering him another deal would be burning up money. He hasn't actually played for a full season since 2005 and I just don't see him doing it again...

That being said, he'll go free agent, sign with the Marlins or something and win the Cy Young again.

I posted this in the other thread but I'll post it again here. Free agent, and possible free agent, pitchers next year, under 40.

Jeremy Affeldt (30)
Tony Armas Jr. (31)
Kris Benson (33)
A.J. Burnett (32) - can opt out after '08 season
Paul Byrd (38)
Matt Clement (33) - $8.75MM club option for '09 with a $0.25MM buyout
Ryan Dempster (32)
Chad Durbin (31)
Josh Fogg (32)
Jon Garland (29)
Mike Hampton (36)
Mark Hendrickson (35)
Livan Hernandez (34)
Jason Jennings (30)
John Lackey (30) - $9MM club option for '09 with a $0.5MM buyout
Jon Lieber (39)
Esteban Loaiza (37) - $7.5MM club option for '09 with a $0.375MM buyout
Braden Looper (34)
Derek Lowe (36)
Pedro Martinez (37)
Mark Mulder (31) - $11MM club option for '09 with a $1.5MM buyout
Carl Pavano (33) - $13MM club option for '09 with a $1.95MM buyout
Brad Penny (31) - $8.75MM club option for '09 with a $2MM buyout
Odalis Perez (32)
Oliver Perez (27)
Andy Pettitte (37)
Mark Prior (27)
C.C. Sabathia (28)
Ben Sheets (30)
Brett Tomko (36)
Josh Towers (32)
Steve Trachsel (38)
Kip Wells (32)
Randy Wolf (32)

How many of these guys would you rather have than Perez? Sabathia and Sheets are the only ones I think are a better bet and Sheets is always injured, which is something we don't need, and I can't imagine the front office carries two pitchers with Santana's contract, which is likely what Sabathia would ask for.

Exactly. I hope Minaya doesn't drink the Kool Aid and sign Ollie to a long term, big dollar contract (which will no doubt be demanded by Bora$). It's great that Ollie has been pitching well of late but I'm ready to get off the Olliecoaster.

Pelfry is coming into his own and along with Santana and Maine the Mets will have 3 good-to-excellent pitchers next year. If someone like Jon Neise can step up to be the fifth starter, Omar will "only" need to find a decent #3/4 pitcher during the offseason.

I have no problem with this idea, but I think there's 0 chance the front office does it. Especially if we're still only few games back.
