Jerry Manuel was ejected from the game in the seventh inning for arguing a Ryan Howard home run which was initially ruled a ground rule double due to fan interference.
Manuel, on watching the game unfold from the locker room, where he was forced to watch the game after being ejected earlier in the night:
“I was a fan, man. I was a big-time New York Mets fan, going like, ‘Wow.’ I was just running from place to place trying to find a place where I could get an out (laughing).”
Following the game, Manuel told reporters, even after watching the replay in his office, he holds that it was not a home run.
…i agree with manuel, no homer…if not only because a fan interfered which was quite apparent…
…added to by Mike Nichols…
…what gets me is how the umpire, Dan Iassogna, closest to the play, who clearly made an immediate decision, had his call overturned by umpires farther away from the play…i’m curious what occurred in that huddle by the umpires to convince iassogna to change his call…clearly, whatever it was, was not explained to manuel…

The Mets are just 12-10 since Jerry Manuel took over as manager.
That said, in that time, they have picked up four games in the standings – and so, obviously, I’m feeling very good about the Mets today.
What’s more, I am ready to admit that I have a Man-Crush on Manuel, or, as Faith and Fear in Flushing once referred to their admiration, ‘a Manuel-Crush.’
That said, if Mets actually continue to play well and make the playoffs under his management, I will honor Manuel’s service by wearing a version of his trademark eyeglasses in October.
Pedro Martinez pitched 5.1 innings last night, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out six to earn the win.
Jerry Manuel on Pedro’s performance:
“He had a high pitch count, but he made some pitches when he had to…I thought he pitched well. I think that pitch-count thing, in the span of five innings, is something that we need to watch. Because, what that tells you is, he might now be getting a certain pitch and they’re fouling it off, and they’re having enough at bats to foul pitches off and not quite getting it where he wants. But, he’s healthy, he feels good and that’s a good thing.”
…pedro was good last night, and didn’t need to stay in with an eight run lead…you would have thought that would be a comfortable enough cushion, and it was, but barely…
By winning last nights game, the Mets took the series from the Phillies and are now above .500 and 2 games out of first place.
After last night’s dramatic win, Jerry Manuel commented on whether he’s happy to pull out the victory:
“That’s an understatement. Any time you put 10 runs on the board and you feel confident in your pitching you expect it to not be that difficult. But, we won the game, we won three out of four, we’re back in the mix and we’re moving above .500. So, all this is just a part of building character and strength and letting them know that, ‘Hey, this is going to be a diffilcut task. We have to be ready to do it. We’ve got to Man Up and keep pushing.’”
Carlos Beltran, who went 1-for-5 with a run scored on the team’s performance:
“Well, we’re playing better. I don’t wanna say that we’re right there yet, but playing a lot better and we’re doing things right…Right now, we’re happy with where we are and we’re looking forward to continuing to move on…We are fortunate to be where we are…But, it is the way it is and we’re happy where we are.”
…although i’m very happy the mets won last night, the game was almost the death of me…it seemed to be a microcosm for the roller coaster ride this season has been for me from a fan’s perspective…
Tagged Regis Courtemanche |In the ninth inning, with two outs and the Mets up two, Carlos Beltran fielded Pedro Feliz‘s single and attempted to throw out the runner going to third.
Jerry Manuel, on team’s overall defense last night, as well as Beltran’s play:
“We made some fundamental mistakes, no question…I think he probably honestly felt that he had a legit shot, that’s the only reason.”
Manuel then agreed that, even if Beltran had a legitimate shot at throwing out the runner, it’s not a play he should make given the situation.
Beltran, on the play, speaking with reporters in the clubhouse after the game:
“I felt I made a good throw. It just, uhh, David was trying to tag the guy and the ball went by him.”
It was then pointed out to Beltran that ‘some people’ think it is a play he should not have made, with his team up two runs with two outs, to which he said, “Well, you’re not a baseball player, that’s why…I felt that if he would have caught the ball, the guy wouldn’t have gone to second.”
…beltran is suggesting that by throwing ahead of the runner, it would have kept the batter from advancing from first to second, i think, which makes no sense…

Tagged Mike Nichols |In the ninth inning, with the Mets up 10-7, Billy Wagner let up two runs on two hits, but rebounded to get Jayson Werth to fly out to right field to notch his 20th save of the season.
Wagner, on the team’s play in Philadelphia:
“We were picking each other up. I think that’s how we have to approach this season, picking each other up, and continue to play like that. I mean, Jose Reyes, he hit a routine ball to second base and he almost beat it out. That’s how we have to play. We have to beat teams to where, when they’re done playing us, they’re tired, they’re exhausted.”
…the ninth inning of last’s night game made me sick to my stomach, between wags’s inexcusable walk to Eric Brunlett and Carlos Beltran‘s ill advised throw to third, the Mets did everything possible to let this game get away, but they got the win and that’s all that matters…
Over at his blog for Newsday, Ken Davidoff wonders if the Mets have replaced Wagner with Armando Benitez.
