Quote: Building Character

By winning last nights game, the Mets took the series from the Phillies and are now above .500 and 2 games out of first place.

After last night’s dramatic win, Jerry Manuel commented on whether he’s happy to pull out the victory:

“That’s an understatement. Any time you put 10 runs on the board and you feel confident in your pitching you expect it to not be that difficult. But, we won the game, we won three out of four, we’re back in the mix and we’re moving above .500. So, all this is just a part of building character and strength and letting them know that, ‘Hey, this is going to be a diffilcut task. We have to be ready to do it. We’ve got to Man Up and keep pushing.’”

Carlos Beltran, who went 1-for-5 with a run scored on the team’s performance:

“Well, we’re playing better. I don’t wanna say that we’re right there yet, but playing a lot better and we’re doing things right…Right now, we’re happy with where we are and we’re looking forward to continuing to move on…We are fortunate to be where we are…But, it is the way it is and we’re happy where we are.”

…although i’m very happy the mets won last night, the game was almost the death of me…it seemed to be a microcosm for the roller coaster ride this season has been for me from a fan’s perspective…

Regis: Turn off the game a bit early, did you? It was 10-9, not 10-1!!!

    • Haha. Must have thought… “ahh I can go to bed; no way they are blowing this lead”

    • Mookie1986 says:

Now that, my friend, is some major revisionist history!

I turned off the game when it was 10-2 and at 10:30 or so I turned it back on and it was 10-7 with WAgs on the mound and 2 men on base ! I was nervous to say the least and when they scored 2 runs and it was 10-9 I was getting flashbacks to Armando Benitez. But, Wags pulled it out and we won. I hope this game is like our season, That would mean that we made it through some tough times and came out on top. GOOD GAME and nice win. It was also cool to see Jerry get thrown out , We seem to have found a spark that was missing. Lets keep it going and stay above 500. LETS GO METS !!!!!

Once Howard’s hit was ruled a home run, I had a bad feeling. As far as blaming the bullpen, Tony Armas deserves most of the blame. He let them back in the game by giving up those 3 runs and opened the floodgates. He gave the Phillies the momentum. I hope Manuel learned something and that is to only use Tony Armas to retrieve loose balls during pregame warmups.

    • nomoredelgado says:

Armas was the pitcher we all thought we were getting last night.

      • stickguy says:

blame it on Manuel for thinking the game was locked up, and not going to Schoe to face howard.

Alomar did it again later when heilmann faced Genkins, but that is a bit more defensible, since it wasn’t howard, and Heilman is supposed to be able to get out lefties!

Character? Phooey. I just want Wagner to stop blowing saves. He almost blew another one yesterday. If he continues to blow them, they need to start mixing up the closing duties a little more. Have a closer du jour. At his age, he’d probably welcome that. On back to back days, he’s probably a little shot.

    • Johan4prez says:

There is no way Wagner is ok with a closer by commitee.

      • VCarver says:

Is that why in 2006 he went to Rick/Willie and asked them to let Heath Bell close some games instead of him? I think he was actually giving them a message then — Like, hey, I’m getting up there in age and you guys need to start thinking about the future.

So if he was OK with it in 2006, I don’t see why he wouldn’t be OK with it now.

What he doesn’t like is to be used in blowout situations.

    • nomoredelgado says:

actually, if manuel went to a closer-by-comittee, wagner would put up signs all over the clubhouse bashing the manager anonymously.

  4. the_other_matt says:

From here on out #13 will be referred to as “Billy Benitez.” (Armando Wagner will also suffice).

    • Xavier22 says:

Yes, Wagner made us all age at least 5 years last night. But in fairness to him, the game never should have been that close to begin with. Aramas and Heilman deserve some blame for letting the Phillies back in.

The largest portion of the blame however should be assigned to the bandbox known as Citizens Bank Park. No wonder Utley leads the league in HR playing in that little league field.

    • vino says:

      Nice. Could not agree more.

  5. meatloaf says:

On a good note, it appears Alou will make some “rehab” starts this week. What? Isn’t that what he was supposed to do last week. Those rainouts were an excuse for the Mets to feed us more BS. What is up with the BS injury updates? There are not gaining any advantage by lying to the public about this stuff. Does Bill Bellichik work for the Mets? This is so frustrating and I think they better look long and hard for a replacement for Alou sooner rather than later.

  6. fortleemets says:

Lets just be happy that they won. Maybe the tide turning means that we actually win these games. Maybe 1 month ago we would have never scored those 2 extra runs in the 6th and actually lost 9-8.

  7. Dirtysanchez says:

Well this was a tight one…definatly woke me up since being up 10-1. Crazy finish but we came out with the win. Im sure i lost a few years of my life with that game but imo not only did we win but we hit the phillies mentally. They came within one run of making a 9 run comeback to tie a game at home and it ended by pop out. Im sure that will hurt (as we have had many games end in similar fashion) the phills and its only a matter of time before we take over 1st. We should do well in the next two series and we will be in good position at the ASB for a monster 2nd half..LETS GO METS
    p.s. Vote Wright

  8. Johan4prez says:

What is up with all these reversal calls going against the mets? That was at least the 4th instance where the original call was correct and then reversed incorrectly! Seriously 4 or 5 times this season alone. The instant replay cannot come soon enough.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      agreed..cant wait for instant replay

    • ravi3 says:

We did get one in our favor, in Atlanta where a trapped ballw as initially ruled as a catch by an Atl outfielder, but Willie had it overturned….Of course it cost us a run which the team needed.

  9. Andrew says:

The nice thing about the win is if you look at it from the Phillies fans perspective — that basically the team teased them by coming back, coming back, coming back, and then falling just short.

Remember, the Mets always seem to do that when they’re strugging.

    • ridethesnake says:

      like the loss to Texas

    • Johan4prez says:

I think it had the reverse effect. They were down big all game long and fought back to within 1. That is a positive for phil fans. Had Philly been up 5-0 and wound up giving back the lead 10-5 and then coming back to within 1 that would have been even worse for them. Since they were down and out and had nothing to lose anyways coming that close shows they never give up and no lead can be safe enough.

      • ridethesnake says:

no, mets were never winning the Texas game… it was 8-2 Rangers going into the bottom of the 8th inning. Mets scored 3 in the 8th, 2 in the 9th and left the tying run on second base. Very similar to last night’s game. I remember not feeling too good about the team at that point, and not feeling any good came from coming close, Willie was fired that weekend and the doors fell off.

I’m not saying the Phillies don’t grow from the comeback, time will tell. But in the end I think the Mets get a win-win — they take 3 of 4 but learn a lesson and get stronger. Again, time will tell this week on the Mets and how they react to what happened. I can see a 10-1 final and then they get cocky against the Giants and Rockies (and at Reds after ASG). Now maybe a wake-up call. Two ways to look at it and the only way to find out is to watch the next week’s worth of games and see if they go 4-5 and sputter, or go 7-2 and take off.

We will also see in the next week or two when the Phils take on tougher teams — if they win 7 of 9, you are right, they grew from the comeback. If they go 4-5 or worse, it did nothing for them.

      • mr.gee21 says:

No. Go and read the comments on the Phillies blogs. They are all demoralized after the loss.

I’m not saying the players’ feelings definitely reflect their fans, but I don’t think Philly was feeling anything good after that series.

  10. ridethesnake says:

I think this is worth repeating, heading into home series vs lesser teams:

Manuel has had 14 of his first 20 games ON THE ROAD, all against TOP TEAMS and we are two games over .500 in that stretch.

  11. VelvetFoot says:

Gotta focus on this guy (on a “lesser’ team):
    Tim Lincecum (10-1, 2.49 ERA)
