The Phillies failed to acquire CC Sabathia due to a lack of power hitting Baseball Musings Logoprospects.  So, their GM Pat Gillick is switching to plan B.

The Braves are 4-9 over their last 13 games, scoring just 38 runs. 1B Mark Teixeira is hitting well during the streak, however. The combination of poor team play and his fine hitting is making a trade for the first baseman look more likely.

Marlins RHP Josh Johnson’s rehabilitation progressed extremely well and he’ll start on Thursday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Nationals LHP Odalis Perez pitches against D’Backs RHP Brandon Webb tonight. The Nationals are 4-4 in games in which Perez allows two runs or less.

The phils have NO chance of acquiring a guy like Berdard.. their best and only option is a mid rotation guy like Jarod Washburn….

    • Agbayanitodeepleftcenter says:

all i can say is thank god the phillies didn’t have the chips for Sabathia. Him and Hamels would probably have won them the division by themselves.

    • Gina says:

They have two pitching prospects in baseball America’s top 100, one in the top 50 who’s expected to be in the rotation as early as next year and if they’re willing to part with one of their outfielders, and/or take back a bad contract, I could definitely see them getting Bedard or maybe Burnett.

In other news whats up with the servers? Does anyone else keep timing out?

I think that Heilman’s improvement has more to do with Dan Warthen than Manuel.

  3. DK says:

Package heilman and go get Fuentes… Only a matter of time before Heilmans next meltdown streak begins… actually looks like it started…

    • shea_guevara says:

Fuentes isn’t exactly meltdown-free either. Or injury free. Plus, he would make the bullpen very lefty-heavy.

If the Mets make any trade at all, it should be for a legitimate everyday outfield bat. Tatis is a great story, but it can’t last.

    • dwright012 says:

I own Fuentes in my fantasy league.. he is far from a sure thing… gave up 5 runs in a 1/3 of an inning last week… he’s an even wash at best with Heilman

  4. stickguy says:

I think the Phils should gut the farm of their few good prospects (a couple of SPs) for Bedard. He has a shoulder problem right now, and will probably have a complete meltdown in CBP and under the pressure of the race! Then he can go on the DL after pulling a Myers.

Actually, Myers is their wildcard. Either he gets his act together in the minors and comes back to shore up the ortatin, or they trade him to a team that needs a closer and wants to move him back into the job he wants.

Hey, Myers is the anit-Heilman! Wants to be in the pen, but they force him to start!

    • dwright012 says:

After what Seattle gave up for Berdard.. they can not sell low on him.. esp since they still control him…

The phils will not land Berdard

      • Gina says:

Yes they can. They really don’t have any other choice, no one is going to give anything like the package they gave up. Either they sell low, or they keep him. I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep him though.

        • dwright012 says:

he’s signed through next season.. why would they sell low now?

The Phils will not get him

        • Gina says:

Because of the injury issues surrounding him, his back his hip now his shoulder, and the fact he hasn’t been able to go longer than 6 innings consistently and why he’s topping out at 100 pitches. His value has seriously decreased. There’s to many questions surrounding his long-term effectiveness. If they trade him it’s not going to be for anything near what they gave up for him.

I’m not saying they’re definitely going to sell low because they might keep him, but if they trade him it’s going to look like they’re selling low compared to what they got for him.

        • Gina says:

Also his k’s are way down and his walks are way up. His k/bb ratio has gone from 3.88 last year to 1.95 this year. He’s on pace to walk 30 more batters this year than last. And his K/9 has gone from 10.9 to 8. Which is still good but it’s a pretty big decrease. When you couple all that with all the health questions he’s like one big walking red flag.

        • beltran the warrior says:

all that said, why would the phillies bother then. you take his history and then watch it become exposed ten fold at cbp. that’s akin to handing over the division to the marlins and mets and waving the white flag. they may as well just keep myers and put him back into the rotation because he’ll give you the same production as bedard.

  5. flynnpsu says:

    forgot all about Josh Johnson.

  6. Steviefan84 says:

I don’t know what a 2nd tier guy in the rotation can do to scare the Mets. Bedard can be good but he hasn’t exactly been shut down dominate either this season.

I agree about Heilman. While he has pitched better. This is the time to trade his punk azzz. Heilman is the biggest choker in ny sports history. And chokers always choke. That’s what they do.

Its not like Heilman will go out there and become a cy young pitcher.

Heilman needs to be shipped out, Brian Fuentes is a good idea. If anything else. It fits Heilman is white, going to white colorado. And Fuentes well you know is a met last name waiting to happen.

Regardless, I dont care if Heilman became Orel Herschiser and pitched 50 scoreless innings. The bottom line, is given a chance he will lose. He will choke and he will always do so, because its in his blood. Hes a loser.

Mets need to forget about getting Nady. Its not going to happen. Bu they should consider trading for Randy Wynn of the SF giants(hes got comparable numbers). Hed come pretty cheap and is a doubles machine. Hes a veteran right handed bat and wouldnt cost much. I dont trust Alou at all. And the Mets need another even better Damion Easley on this team desperately.

Those 2 trades alone make the Mets a playoff team. Trading for Matt Holiday makes them an NLCS type them

I wouldn’t state it quite so harshly but while I think Heilman has superb pitching skills and his rexcent record has improved, he is still wild and has been lucky. The problem is this:
A star gets better when the pressure is turned on. Heilman gets worse.

He is fun to watch though and he’s also very likeable but his trade value is good right now and we need tough heads for the stretch.

      • deloid says:

        Forgot to add this-

Nolan Ryan and his “Ryan Express” was a hoot to watch and his wildness caused him to be traded (mistake obviously). The difference with Ryan”s wildness and Heilman’s was that Ryan didn’t get worse with pressure…he was wild all the time and probably a little better under pressure.

I know its the the thread to post this but does anyone know how to find out what the final vote tally is for the All Star game? I’ve been voting for DW feverishly and would like to know where he stands.

    Thanks,

    • domosnacks5 says:

I have been too, and I can’t say I’ve found a tally either. I’m assuming it’s just shady business where the MLB won’t give you a final tally, and on Thursday they’ll just announce Wright and Giambi as the final 2, regardless of how the votes ended up.

Call me delerious but I’m convinced that the MLB has a hand in who’s selected and who makes these “magical comebacks” in votes in the final days of All Star voting every year.

    Guys we should consider
Jerry Hairston Jr from Cincy. .397 with a 1.049 OPS vs LH can play IF and OF.
Ty Wigginton, we know all about him. .327 with a 1.030 OPS vs LH and obviously can play many positions.
Randy Winn, even switch hitting OF.
Rich Aurillia, one of my favorites for this team, can play OF and 1B and his even against RH and LH.
Ryan Spillborghs, unbelievable that this guy is not starting for the Rockies.
