According to TR Sullivan from MLB.com, teams are expressing interest in trading for Rangers OF Nelson Cruz.
Cruz, 28, is hitting .343 with 26 HR and 73 RBI in 80 at bats in Triple-A this season.
…within reason, i am always a fan of trying to acquire these type of players, i.e., guys who were once highly-touted prospects, but who fizzled and just could not get it together early in their career…
In Sullivan’s opinion, “Cruz could be of help to a team looking for an outfielder but not willing to give up big-time prospects for a big-name player.”
The right-handed hitting Cruz has played mostly right field in his three major-league seasons, while batting .231 in 442 at bats.

Can we give our owns guys a few chances first? Or no?
Oh wait. We did. And they stink too.
Get healthy Church? Please?
When Sullivan said “Cruz could be of help to a team looking for an outfielder but not willing to give up big-time prospects for a big-name player” he pretty much said “Hey Mets, look over here!”
They also implied, “Hey Omar, you used to work for the Rangers, maybe you know some guys over there who’d help you out!”
Pick em up. Can’t hurt.
do it, omar.
I tend to doubt the 80 at bats part. He’s not Toe Nash in the Sugar Cane Workers Beer League.
You win the all-time LOL award.
80 games 289 ab’s according to milb.com
i was just about to ask if that was a misprint. if it’s 26 hr and 80 freakin AB’s, then YES, go get him. but of course thats too good to be true
So basically though, this guy is the hispanic Val Passuci.
Honestly, if they are going to give him up for say Emmanuel Garcia or a Jeff McKnight baseball card, okay, worth a shot, but this guy has historically STRUCK OUT two to three times more than he has walked with in excess of 120 ks per year, which says, I can’t hit a curveball, an offspeed pitch or a slider to save my life.
If he can play defense, he’s already far more realistic than Pascucci. (On that note, maybe the Rangers would want Pascucci in a package. They do have DHs in the AL. . . .)
Since it’s clear that Val Pascucci would have to ‘eliminate’ 4 or 5 guys on the 40-man to get a shot, does he have any value as trade bait to an AL team seeking a righty DH/OF platoon?
I believe Val Pascucci’s value is two-fold: to sell tickets to New Orleans Zephyr games; and to make a AAA team look marginally attractive to a north east city looking for a AAA team (I’m looking at you Syracuse).
I am aware of the Syracuse Chiefs of the Blue Jays system, but I have read that their lease is about up and that some big NY politician has been talking with the Mets about bringing the team there.
It is more or less a given that the Mets AAA franchise will be in Syracuse within 2 years
That’s a lot of homers and RBI for 80 at-bats.
given the reported dire straights of the Mets farm system, and the major holes to fill next year, getting a player like this is probably what Omar can do. Or a pure salary dump.
Of course, the big question with Cruz is (are?), can he play good D, and is he a K machine?
If the answers are no and yes, in that order, might s well call up Pascucci!
But, if they like his tools, and he can handle the OF ok, might be worth a shot. Some guys just do develop late. And, maybe he has a 1B glove too?
Now, what do you trade for him? A pitcher like Parnell? Maybe Carp, since he supposedly has DH written all over him?
28 though is kind of young for Omar though…
If they trade either Carp or Parnell for this guy, the mistakes continue to mount.
The guy we should get is BILL HALL. He was a masher before and is unhappy in Brewer town. Check out his spilts vs LH. He is hitting .369 with a 1.080 OPS against MLB LH. He can play the IF and OF. What’s not to like?
Plus he would be a pure salary dump as he is signed through 2010 and the Brewers don’t want him that long for sure. Great thing for us is although he is signed that long, it’s not terrible money and he can play 3B, SS, 2B, and OF including CF. That’s an insurance plan. I am sure he could play a little 1B too.
I know he was unhappy because of playing time but right now for us he has a starting position in either LF, RF or 2B. Imagine against a LH you could have Alou, Easley and Hall in the order.
he has 84 at bats against Lefties, so what is not to like?
his 172 at bats against righties in which he is hitting a lowly .157 with .297 SLG.
Bill Hall is a useless major league hitter and a worthless pickup.
Why bat him against RH? Useless, Aguillia, Nixon, Evans, Phillips, Valwhatever, and Cruz are useless. We need a RH bat that can play multiple positions. That’s what he is and he does not cost what a Nady would.
I have no idea why you are bringing Nady into the conversation.
Hall is a garbage hitter who k’s a ton with two more years on his contract.
Please… can we stop signing minor leaguers who we plan to incorporate into a significant role on our club? Please……..
I’m bound to have more confidence that we’re a true contender if we do.
This guy was a big prospect when the Rangers got him in that Carlos Lee deal. He was supposed to be the replacement for Lee after he became a FA. Why not give him a shot. Those are big numbers… even for a guy in AAA.
The same goes for Dallas McPherson.
.305/ .412/ 31 homers/ 68 rbi
McPherson is obviously a 1b/3b and a lefty (and a Marlin), but he is another fallen star who is tearing it up in the minors.
Ask yourself, why are these two 28 year olds stuck in the minors?
Is it collusion due to performance enhancing drug use allegations?
easier answer = not good
Ahh, sorry. I was cashing in some Bonds to go on a Cruz to Bermuda and I momentarily became confused.
I hate to agree with you Patrick, because it’s you, but I do. 28 year old who are really good don’t tend to play minor league baseball. They play major league baseball. Especially if they once wore the “star prospect” badge.
Adam Dunn would be a tremendous addition – and supposedly he’ll come cheap. I have no idea why we wouldn’t pick him up. Despite his batting average, he hits 40 homers and walks 100 times. He won’t hit into double plays. He can platoon with Alou and give Delgado off days. And in a few hours when Alou gets injured again, he can be there full time.
I seriously cannot see why we wouldn’t be trying to pick him up. Maybe he’s not a #1 slugger, but he’s a heck of a complimentary player. Baseball America suggested he could be an incredible #2 hitter because of his OBP and his ability to take pitches. Really, he could bat #2, #4, #5, or #6 and add a lot in any slot.
Aaron Heilman alone could probably get it done. If not, then a AA bat and someone like Nathan Vineyard.
I have not seen anything where he will come cheap, I would love to have him for this season and beyond but I don’t see it being cheap.
According to mlbtraderumors there’s not much interest in him, but they also say it might be because he hasn’t become available. But then they say the reds are worried if they offer him arbitration he’ll except so they’re demands in a package back won’t be as high as they might otherwise be.
ive seen that he can come cheap, but i DOUBT Heilman alone will get it done…HOWEVER, i do feel that heilman and a decent prospect would get him…i’ve been signing praise to Dunn for a while now. I think he’s a very very good player. Yes, he K’s a lot, but that means he doesnt hit into DPs….high obp, lot of walks and runs scored, 40 hrs and about 90 rbi every year. Plus, he traditionally steals about 10 bases…get him now, sign him, he’s ur 1b next year or the LF if we cant get a corner OF.
side note while his name is mentiond…My friend also told me he read or heard that the mets might consider making heilman a starter again next year, since it was peterson leading the “heilman isnt a starter” march..we’ll deff need startin pitching next year…
You mean like Heilman and Carp?
im not too sure how other teams feel about Carp, but I was thinking one of our top 5 prospects. I think teams still feel heilman can produce, so we can include him in our “trade bait” talks
Who are our top 5 prospects? I know F-mart, and then probably niese, but after that I have no idea.
he’s also a lefty. we don’t need any more of them.
I think we should just get Bill Hall. Adam Dunn would be kind of nice, but he strikes out too much. Bill Hall would be very nice on this team, he is only 28 and can essentially play any position. He has good power and in the right situation can raise that ba.
Hall is slugging .414 he slugged .425 last year. I wouldn’t really call that a power hitter. And he’s slugging a whopping .275 outside of Miller.
Not for nothing but Dunn is year in and year out an underwhelming run producer for a guy who walks so much and has so much power.
Four time he has hit 40 plus HRs and each time he struggled to have more than 100 RBIs.
again, im a dunn fan as u can see above, but you are correct. I believe his CAREER avg w/ runners in scoring position is something like .220
HOWEVER, he has been shuffled around the lineup MANY times. THe former reds mgr changed lineups more than bobby v…
if we did get DUnn, i beleive you bat him 2nd or 4th and LEAVE HIM THERE. The rbis will come with more consistency that way
100 runs and 100 RBI for four straight years, plus or minus five, with 40 HR and 100 walks. I’d much rather have a K than a GIDP in a big situation. Dunn plays for the REDS – of course he’s not driving in a million runs. if you have Reyes, Beltran, Wright before Dunn, he will drive in more. But even if he doesn’t – even if he drives in fewer runs – how many players do the Mets have driving in just 90? Oh, right, just TWO – Beltran and Wright. Why is adding 100 Runs and 100 RBI a bad thing in this lineup?
Reyes, Beltran, Wright, Dunn, Easley, Delgado, Castro, Chavez – that’s a killer lineup.
i agree. Ive been posting “we should get adam dun” for like 2 years now
the new york media would eat dunn alive although i wouldnt mind his big bat in the lineup
I’d trade another 10 double plays for another 15-20 sac flys or hits combined over ks
Is it his fault that his teammates are never on base?
nady baby
would LOVE to get nady back…really, for what our needs are, ALL signs poitn to nady
right handed power hitter that can play a solid defensive OF and can play 1b, who is signed thru next year so he can be our full time starter at either position
i’d LOVE to see Omar be able to get nady back
I really think Jason Bay would be a better fit for this team. He hits for average and power plus his salary is much lower than Dunn’s. And I agree–We don’t need another lefty.
Bay: .292, 17hrs, 45 rbis, 70SO, 6 million
Dunn: .225, 22hrs, 52 rbis, 94SO, 13 million
You know who’d be a good fit? Albert Pujols! And Ryan Braun! And Hanley Ramirez! Let’s call up the Cardinals, Brewers, and Marlins, and TELL them (don’t ask, TELL) that we need those guys. Teams really enjoy giving their best players to other teams – caring is sharing!
If we could actually get Dunn for a package like Heilman and Carp/Murphy I would jump on it.
It looks like it wouldn’t even take that much – he’s very, very low value right now. With Krivsky on board, I’d be pretty surprised if the Mets didn’t go for it – he’d completely change this lineup.
Here’s an interesting tidbit…we were the first team to sign Nelson Cruz. However, in typical Steve Phillips fashion, he was sent to the Oakland A’s in 2000, netting the immortal Jorge Velandia (who went 11 for 74 in his Mets career) in return.
What would it take to get Kendry Morales from the Angels? He hits for power from both sides of the plate and the Angels are overloaded with 1B.
Does anyone know what needs they have? Can the Mets fill them?
I realize morales is only 25, but you do realize he is in the minors, and he has ops’d a whopping 717 in the majors while hitting 9 hr’s.
Next!
We have plenty of guys like this. If you look at Cruz’s stats, he’s already 28 years old. Before this year, the max he ever hit was 20HR in a season. He’s shown that he can’t hit ML pitching with 3 cups of tea in the Majors. What’s so great about him besides a fluke year?
If I was Minaya, i would seriously start throwin Heilman’s name around a package of some mid level prospects to improve this team. We have plenty of guys in the minors to replace him, namely Muniz and Kunz (who should be up here already). And what with El Duque probably going to the pen, I think we have more than enough to lose the awesome power of Heilman and still be able to move forward as a team.
Cruz seems to be one of the AAAA players that is too good for AAA, but not quite good enough to hit in the majors.
Then again, that may be better than the spare parts we’ve been throwing out in left field for much of the season (Anderson, Evans, Aguila, Nixon, Clark). If he can be had cheap, why not?
I’d be happy with Beltran, Chavez and either Alou or Church every day. Who knows if we’ll ever be see either of those two for an extended period. Better come up with a backup plan Omar.
Why not? Because we have similar guys in AAA. The only reason they’re not up here is because they’re not on the 40 man roster. We should trade for this guy and guarantee him a spot on our roster?
bad news he was already a met
