Buzz: Teams are Interested in Nelson Cruz
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 9, 2008 11:15 am

According to TR Sullivan from MLB.com, teams are expressing interest in trading for Rangers OF Nelson Cruz.

Cruz, 28, is hitting .343 with 26 HR and 73 RBI in 80 at bats in Triple-A this season.

within reason, i am always a fan of trying to acquire these type of players, i.e., guys who were once highly-touted prospects, but who fizzled and just could not get it together early in their career

In Sullivan’s opinion, “Cruz could be of help to a team looking for an outfielder but not willing to give up big-time prospects for a big-name player.”

The right-handed hitting Cruz has played mostly right field in his three major-league seasons, while batting .231 in 442 at bats.

When Sullivan said “Cruz could be of help to a team looking for an outfielder but not willing to give up big-time prospects for a big-name player” he pretty much said “Hey Mets, look over here!”

They also implied, “Hey Omar, you used to work for the Rangers, maybe you know some guys over there who’d help you out!”

I tend to doubt the 80 at bats part. He’s not Toe Nash in the Sugar Cane Workers Beer League.

i was just about to ask if that was a misprint. if it’s 26 hr and 80 freakin AB’s, then YES, go get him. but of course thats too good to be true

So basically though, this guy is the hispanic Val Passuci.

Honestly, if they are going to give him up for say Emmanuel Garcia or a Jeff McKnight baseball card, okay, worth a shot, but this guy has historically STRUCK OUT two to three times more than he has walked with in excess of 120 ks per year, which says, I can’t hit a curveball, an offspeed pitch or a slider to save my life.

If he can play defense, he’s already far more realistic than Pascucci. (On that note, maybe the Rangers would want Pascucci in a package. They do have DHs in the AL. . . .)

Since it’s clear that Val Pascucci would have to ‘eliminate’ 4 or 5 guys on the 40-man to get a shot, does he have any value as trade bait to an AL team seeking a righty DH/OF platoon?

I believe Val Pascucci’s value is two-fold: to sell tickets to New Orleans Zephyr games; and to make a AAA team look marginally attractive to a north east city looking for a AAA team (I’m looking at you Syracuse).

I am aware of the Syracuse Chiefs of the Blue Jays system, but I have read that their lease is about up and that some big NY politician has been talking with the Mets about bringing the team there.

It is more or less a given that the Mets AAA franchise will be in Syracuse within 2 years

That’s a lot of homers and RBI for 80 at-bats.

given the reported dire straights of the Mets farm system, and the major holes to fill next year, getting a player like this is probably what Omar can do. Or a pure salary dump.

Of course, the big question with Cruz is (are?), can he play good D, and is he a K machine?

If the answers are no and yes, in that order, might s well call up Pascucci!

But, if they like his tools, and he can handle the OF ok, might be worth a shot. Some guys just do develop late. And, maybe he has a 1B glove too?

Now, what do you trade for him? A pitcher like Parnell? Maybe Carp, since he supposedly has DH written all over him?

28 though is kind of young for Omar though…

If they trade either Carp or Parnell for this guy, the mistakes continue to mount.

The guy we should get is BILL HALL. He was a masher before and is unhappy in Brewer town. Check out his spilts vs LH. He is hitting .369 with a 1.080 OPS against MLB LH. He can play the IF and OF. What’s not to like?

Plus he would be a pure salary dump as he is signed through 2010 and the Brewers don’t want him that long for sure. Great thing for us is although he is signed that long, it’s not terrible money and he can play 3B, SS, 2B, and OF including CF. That’s an insurance plan. I am sure he could play a little 1B too.
I know he was unhappy because of playing time but right now for us he has a starting position in either LF, RF or 2B. Imagine against a LH you could have Alou, Easley and Hall in the order.

he has 84 at bats against Lefties, so what is not to like?

his 172 at bats against righties in which he is hitting a lowly .157 with .297 SLG.

Bill Hall is a useless major league hitter and a worthless pickup.

Why bat him against RH? Useless, Aguillia, Nixon, Evans, Phillips, Valwhatever, and Cruz are useless. We need a RH bat that can play multiple positions. That’s what he is and he does not cost what a Nady would.

I have no idea why you are bringing Nady into the conversation.

Hall is a garbage hitter who k’s a ton with two more years on his contract.

Please… can we stop signing minor leaguers who we plan to incorporate into a significant role on our club? Please……..

I’m bound to have more confidence that we’re a true contender if we do.

This guy was a big prospect when the Rangers got him in that Carlos Lee deal. He was supposed to be the replacement for Lee after he became a FA. Why not give him a shot. Those are big numbers… even for a guy in AAA.

The same goes for Dallas McPherson.

.305/ .412/ 31 homers/ 68 rbi

McPherson is obviously a 1b/3b and a lefty (and a Marlin), but he is another fallen star who is tearing it up in the minors.
