In a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton last night, Moises Alou had one hit in three at bats while playing five innings in the outfield.
According to the Norwich Bulletin, Alou said: “There’s a pretty good chance I might be up there Friday. There’s a chance I may wait until after the All-Star break, but my goal is to be back in New York this weekend.”
…i’ll believe when i see it, moises…
…as i said yesterday, i’ll be interested to see how Jerry Manuel manages alou’s health on a daily basis…
…perhaps alou should become a part-time player, splitting time with Endy Chavez, and become the team’s go-to pinch hitter when not in the starting lineup…

For what it is worth – I think the “Where are we going to play Moises and El Duque” conversation should have died when Willie was put out to pasture.
Put them on the bench and when/if someone starts to fall on their face, give the old goats a chance to EARN a job back.
This team has a better feel, and better confidence then they have had in a long while. Going back to Willie’s veteran first psychosis is not what a team getting on a roll needs.
I dont personally have a problem with alou coming back and playing outfield, but I think its gotta be in a situation where ryan church is gone (like now) or when/if endy cools off with the bat. Sitting endy right now to play alou, no matter how much of a hitting machine the guy still is, is stupid.
With Church out until at least 7/22 there is room for Alou and Chavez…but we’ve seen what happens when Endy gets overexposed.
Otherwise, I like what Tatis has done, but suggesting he’s earned starts over Alou is silly.
Can someone tell me what is going on with Angel Pagan? Is he coming back at some point?
I thought he was considering season ending shoulder surgery but I could be wrong. I know it hasn’t healed properly and he still can’t hit from one side and he’s not close to coming off the DL.
Thanks.
You have to sit Tatis for Alou, I’d much rather have Tatis available to come off the bench as a pinch hitter than endy.
Agreed on Duque…not so much of Alou. Has someone really ‘earned’ both corner spots over him?
As for Duque, yeah, we have 5 starters who deserve to stay put.
I agree to a degree. While we’re winning, who the heck wants to tinker. But on the off, off chance Alou can return and be somewhat durable, then you just cannot forego his wonderful hitting abilities. I mean, the man is a great bat!
alou is a better hitter than chavez in his sleep. it’s not like when he’s healthy, he doesn’t carry his weight. the guy makes the lineup work and you want to put him on the bench to keep endy in the lineup?
I think Alou starts his first game back in LF, then Tatis can replace him around the third inning when he goes down.
Perhaps if we use him a PH he’ll last a few games (rather than a few innings).
Finally, the notion that Alou and Chavez could share a position ignores the absence of Church. Chavez is our #2 OF right now, so if anyone would share a spot with Alou, it’d be Tatis (MA, NE, CA not up to task).
there is also a chance that he’ll be back on the dl on saturday
The more I think about it, the mose sense Lofton makes and the less I understand why Minaya is so dismissive. Lofton is NOT Barry Bonds. He can still play a solid OF, and with Church, Alou, and Castillo hurt he can fill in everyday for now, alternate with Alou if Church comes back, and can alot into that #2 spot in the order perfectly.
Compared to Aguila and co. how is this not even a possibility? Lofton is a winning ballplayer.
lofton is also a left-handed hitter. we have enough of them in the outfield. bringing him in means you’re more than likely taking away one of the bench guys who hit right-handed. there’s still something to be said for balance in the line-up.
Yeah, Friday sounds good. That way, he will save 3 games from his next DL stint due to the ASB.
I think they should just run him out there every day and dare him to perform. Also to suck it up and pop Motrin if he is sore. If he can’t handle it, then he is officially done, and should retire (or the Mets can just DFA him).
How come no official word yet on Church? a brief note that he went on the DL yesterday, but no actual information? Man, the team could use him for the stretch run.
Maybe Alou can make it until the end of July, and Church can come back to take over in August?
darn – your first line was what I was going to say…
I’d like to see Nick Evans back to B-Mets before the ML ASB, so he doesn’t lose more at bats this year. Colorado starts a lefty on Sunday, so activate Moises for that game and let him play; if he gets hurt immediately, he’s back on the list as of Monday and there’s enough time to get someone to Cincinnati.
Also, now that Aguila has rusted on the bench, maybe he should go back to NO and give someone else a chance for the major league paycheck for a week or two…all these guys called up from the minors are having a big payday this year, picking up about an extra $1600 every game they spend on the Mets roster. That’s equal to a week off in the winter for every day they’re in the bigs.
I, for one, would like to see Alou get back here and take over as the everyday LF – especially with Church out for who knows how long.
But I won’t be holding my breath on that becoming a reality for the second half….
I totally agree that Alou should be a pinch hitter. We have always heard that he can ‘get out of bed and hit’. He is a professional hitter. He is perfect for that role. We have a good situation in left field. While we don’t have much power, we have Endy and Tatis that gives the Mets some flexibility. Both guys seem to be gamers. Also, hopefully Pagan will come back and provide even more flexibility.
I also agree with the comment regarding making veterans EARN a role. I like having the young guys in there and playing hard. They are passionate and still have something to prove. For the most part, they have not earned the tens of millions of dollars, or fame yet and need to go out and get it. They are hungry for success. Manuel should feed that hunger!
What ‘young guys’ are you referring to?
To be honest it looks as if Church is done for the year, which is unfortunate. But concussions are very serious, and these “migraines” that he’s had his whole career is just cover by the Mets organization to say they don’t know whats wrong but he’s not better. If he is still suffering from headaches/dizziness he should not be allowed to play. And I’m saying this out of his own well being. If you read some of the stories about these guys who retired from the NFL and can barely feed themselves because they can’t stop shaking, you see how serious multiple concussions are.
Unfortunately, Alou is done as well (and you can add El Duque to the list too).
I don’t think Lofton would be a bad sign. A. Reyes and Aguila and Evans are not ready for ‘the show’.
Yes, and the thing is, among other skills, an OFer has to be able to track a ball and run full speed to catch it. If any of you have done this at HS level and beyond, you know what a challenge it is. Aching head and dizziness just don’t mix with playing this position.
Times piece on Church today struck me as sad. It’s clear there is no bona fide answer to the guy’s condition. It’s the brain people, and it ain’t a simple diagnosis. The last graph of the story quotes an eminent neurologist, who says that you only really no how bad a concussion is from lingering side effects, and the fact that Church suffers now is a bad sign, indeed.
I hope to hell he’s 100% with no more effects after this DL stint ends, but I’m not very confident.
absolutely. if he misses the rest of the season, oh well…it isn’t a readily identifiable/understandable injury, like a leg bone poking through, but it falls into the same category: injuries happen in baseball, and it sucks, and we have to move on. Bettter he gets healthy for next year than potentially sacrafice his well-being and livlihood permanently.
At this point, you just got to hope that his concussion is not career threatening. I say if he’s still dizzy after the DL, shut him down for the year. Totally sad.
There is a CHANCE I win the lottery tonight as well
Can we all just pray he stays in the line-up.
Keep in mind that Alou had over 200 ab’s last year in August and September. If he gives us the same production I will gladly take it
And during those he rattled off a 30+ game hit streak.
Alou is a huge bat, so he can take his time, as far as I’m concerned.
Agreed that Alou can only help if he plays however we just can’t count on it. Even if he is 100 % at his beat there is still plenty of playing time available for Alou PLUS an additional corner OF. (have to assume Church is not going to be available)
Tatis and Endy are doing fine now but our bench is very thin. Adding another OF bat will help the bench as some combination of Alou/Endy/Tatis will be sitting on a given day.
Tatis can spell Delgado agaist some lefties , give DW a day or 2 off between now and year end ,play some corner Of and pinch hit.
Endy can split playing time with Alou ,PH and be the defensive replacement when he does not start.
Alou in the outfield is a no brainer to make the team better, but Jerry has keep the rotation he has now and just plug him into it. There’s no sense is running Alou out there everyday when he’s just going to strain a ring finger or a sideburn and end up back on the DL. The guy can hit, we all know this, but the revolving door on the roster because of this man’s health needs to stop. When it looks like Ryan ‘pray for me’ Church is suffering from Troy Aikmen/Steve Young syndrome there is no better time than now to call around the league and inquire about a corner OF. Jason Bay? Matt Holiday? X? As well as the Tatis/Chavez combo has been doing they are still situational players playing everyday (Tatis wasn’t even in the Mets plans this year).
If Alou is healthy he plays and starts. No doubt.
Given what we have seen out of Manuel, I am sure Alou will rest at least once a series and will probably be taken out after the 6th or 7th innings if the situation allows for it. One fringe benefit of playing Endy and Tatis alot is that they have both started hitting and could fill in more regularly and produce more so than if they were cold off of the bench for a game.
I don’t even know what to make or expect from Church. I know some people are saying he might be done for the year- I don’t know about that, but at a minimum he is probably out for the rest of this month, if not more…
Please,,,,Moises,,,,just go away!!!!!! He wont last 3 days…Why freakin bother….go get fernandez or someone else in double A…This alou is a joke anymore,,,let it go and move on…
I don’t understand all of the posts on here saying that Alou needs to “earn” his way into the lineup or hoping he will go away. If he is in the lineup he is a major right handed presence and can provide protection to Beltran and Wright in a way that certainly Endy Chavez or Fernando Tatis can not do. Certainly a middle of the order of Wright-Beltran-Alou-Delgado is more potent than putting Easley 5th like last night.
Alou’s issue is staying healthy. When he is able to take the field the Mets have to take advantage of those opportunities. It is only a matter of time before he breaks down again, so you have to use him while you can.
Alou’s health will dictate how he is used so it is really pointless to try and analyze it. I do, however, really LOVE Easley in the lineup over Castillo!
I agree Easley needs to be in the lineup, Castillo now must earn his spot back maybe a little more than Alou but who is gonna bat second if Endy comes out. I really like him in the 2 spot especially with him hitting. I think we gotta keep the lineup as is until someone cools off.
maybe if alou is healthy enough to hit, put Beltran in the 2 for a little.
Any plan involving Alou is NOT a plan.
As for El WHOque, a spot in the bullpen awaits. If he gripes, and is healthy, ship him off to another team for a spare part or low level minor leaguer.
I tell ya…anyone who doesnt want Alou back everyday is on crack. Seriously. We have to hope he remains healthy the rest of the year..we have no choice. The man can flat out hit. With him in the lineup it changes everything. Whats the big deal…he comes back for 10 games then is out for 30. 10 games of Alou is better than what we got. Bunch of crackheads you guys are.
SO YES, when he gets back..bench whoever. period. There is no debate, Alou makes us a better team. just pray he stays healthy. And if we can get back Church?? They both stay healthy? Come on…that is a real lineup.
