News: Armas DL’d, Muniz Up
By Mike Nichols - Jul 9, 2008 5:03 pm

The Mets have placed Tony Armas Jr. on the 15-day disabled list due to a pulled adominal muscle.

Carlos Muniz has been recalled to take Armas’ spot on the 25-man roster.

…jeez, muniz is racking up the frequent flyer miles on the Heath Bell Express

nooo. where the hell is vargas? he pitched fine for us

    • gamblor says:

Vargas and Figueroa were both DFA’d and taken off the 40-man roster so the Mets would have to take someone else off the roster to bring one of them up. Muniz still has options so he’s been the easiest choice of reliever to run back and forth.

      • Nate W. says:

well considering that Jason Vargas, Ambiorix Burgos, and even El Duque could all be moved to the 60 day DL they have no restrictions on who they want to call up.

        They chose Muniz over them.

        • wnymetsfan says:

He hasn’t been that bad. He has given up 8 runs in 11.2 innings but 4 came in one game where he pitched 1.2 innings. You remove that one game and he has a 3.60 ERA and a sub 1 WHIP. He seems to have a live arm and is worth a shot. Plus he has more RP experience in terms of pitching multiple days in a row which not sure Vargas can do as well.

  2. SantanaCYYOung says:

keep muniz up here until elduque is ready, which maybe never

  3. tical1334 says:

How about calling up Figueroa for the long relief spot? He’s been pitching pretty well for New Orleans

    • MetsFanInVegas says:

      I forgot about him.

      • ebfnyc says:

        Muniz …

Do you keep a separate toothbrush in N.O. and put one in a travel bag?

They don’t travel that well. You know they are moist etc. So I am just curious about your system.

When you get back from your trip if you do have two, don’t forget to air the travel one so it dries, then put it back in the bag.

        goodluck.

  4. Santana57 says:

Figgy has no business being on this team.

  5. djstue says:

They got a real passion for this scrub Muniz.

    Where’s Danny Graves?

  6. sherlockcollector says:

Last year I thought he might do OK but this year he’s gotten wacked around almost every time he’s pitched. I was looking at the Mets minor league teams, especially AAA – pretty much a vast wasteland. Can anyone tell me what’s with Angel Pagan?? The guy has fallen off the ends of the earth. Are the Mets hiding something here?

    • DK says:

Last week they said pagan might have season ending surgery…

I would give figgy a shot at long relief.

    • Ceetar says:

He’s still hoping to avoid surgery, but has been having issues with his shoulder.

I do kinda like Muniz, anyway, he’s done more travelling than Bell, who only had to go to Virginia, not Louisiana.

  7. metsthebest says:

c’mon Muniz isn’t bad he’s still very young. You trade this guy and watch him grow up to be another Heath Bell. El Duque will probably take his spot when he is healthy again. I think the best option would’ve been was bringing Vargas. Why don’t they bring up Fernando Martinez, instead of Nick Evans?

    • guierllNO MOta says:

because bringing up OF prospects too early leads to diminishing returns, case in point, both Millege and Gomez. before Gomez came up we could gotten Santana for him straight up.

    • Gasface77 says:

      …key word there being “grow.”

    • grotesmask says:

FIne, but I don’t want to see him pitch in tight situations yet. Smith is proving he can handle them.

I think Heilman will have his typical second half surge for us, so he’s restoring my confidence somewhat. Muniz simply hasn’t pitched enough to be worthy of condemnation, right?

  8. JINBK says:

Figueroa proved that he is NOT a major league pitcher.

However, I felt we were fortunate not to lose Vargas when he was DFA’d last time. There are a lot of teams that could do worse, and do send out worse every five days. Where the hell is he??

    • dontstopbelieving says:

Wasn’t Vargas a FA when we picked him up? So any team could have had him then, and I don’t think there was a real bidding war for his services.

It would be real nice if El Duque could come back and settle into the long man role.

  9. garykeithron says:

do the mets lead the league in players on the DL?

    • guierllNO MOta says:

maybe the NL, the Yankees gotta lead the ML, they got 3 SPs on the DL…that team would be in Nats territory if not for Mo Rivera……we got the wrong sandman…but the right 2005 draft choice…ha

  10. Where is Turk Wendell

  11. dykstraw II says:

can players be placed retroactively on the 60-day DL like they can on the 15-day DL? if so we should do this with jason vargas, wise and pagan. so there should be no 40-man roster rule we can’t bring up figgy or claudio vargas.

    • Nate W. says:

yes they can, and yes the Mets will do that if they need the spots for others.

Vargas, Burgos, and Duque should be the first to go on the 60 as they are not going to be seen this year.

  12. ebfnyc says:

I need to speak with Muniz. He must have a creative system for always having a bag packed.

  13. zen says:

the mets have the best medical staff in the history of team sports

  14. ebfnyc says:

    Dear Fan,

I’m Carlos Muniz. Right now I’m up again but soon I’ll be down again and then up again.

I would like to turn this into a song. The more money I make is nice for me and for you is nice (to know).

    Warm Regards,
    Carlos P. Muniz

  15. GregB says:

Paging El Duque…El Duque to the bullpen please…Paging El Duque…your seat is now available.

  16. cver says:

Man, what a bunch of old scrubs we have! But, in the spirit of the Even-Steven 2008 Mets that has been discussed some spots including on It’s Mets For Me (referring to that Seinfeld episode), Armas can go down and eventually Old Duque could come back from the shadows of the infirmed.

  17. nyj01827 says:

Honestly, who really cares that Tony Armas Jr. ended up on the DL? He should have been demoted by now. He wasn’t pitching well. Vargas is better, especially as a spot starter. So is Figueroa. They gave Tony Armas his shot at a start and he got good run support that Johan could have desperately used, but the point is he’s just another stopgap guy.

Kind of like Trot Nixon. And Matt Wise. These guy’s aren’t even on the disabled list. They all aren’t even good enough to be on the team. Originally, Smith was supposed to be in the minors for Wise, but he’s having a solid year. Obviously El Duque will slot into that Armas/Muniz role. El Duque probably won’t be a starter. I don’t see why he’d have to yet. Oliver’s coming around a little, but he can crunch against crappy teams. Pedro has to show more too before we’re able to rely on him down the stretch. This will mean the Mets may not have to trade prospects for a starting pitcher like Vicente Padilla, because they’re more in need of an outfielder or a right-handed reliever in my opinion.

Are they going to run out of options with Carlos Muniz too? Don’t you get like 7? It feels like they’ve done it at least five teams bringing him up and down this year. If they’re buyers in the market, it’s possible they could try to use him in a trade I’m taking it.

Right now the Mets don’t need any negative influences, such as seeing Alou get taken out of a game in the third inning. Hopefully Alou and Castillo are ready fresh right off the DL next year. Last year they did the same exact thing with Lastings Milledge and he played decent. They may activate Nixon around the same time too, but that’s only because Aguila and Evans really are useless to this team right now.

  18. nyj01827 says:

beginning second half of the season* (not next year – although that may be a predictable time too lol)

  19. anrst says:

it’s the same thing with heath bell … how much can you expect from a guy who is up and down and thrown into random situations with no set role?

  20. nyj01827 says:

Yup, exactly. They did the same thing with Royce Ring too. It’s like they have set in their mind when ever someone isn’t doing well or gets hurt, Muniz is going to be the guy coming up. He had a great year in AA ball a couple years ago and his stuff isn’t even bad, but it’s hard for him to develop. I know they had him in the closer’s role in AAA, but it screws up the rhythym when you’re continually promoted to throw in blow out situations.

They made the same mistake with Jorge Sosa, Dave Williams and Nelson Figueroa. They don’t give these guy’s any experience in long relief roles (or short relief in Sosa’s case) that would be been mentally valuable. I understand they’re out to win games down there too, but the major league team is obviously the top priority. Overall though, they still have some depth to work with. They should have recalled Claudio Vargas because it’s likely there will be teams interested in him come the deadline.

They probably wouldn’t get a lot back for him, but a couple lower level prospects wouldn’t hurt. Maybe they could swing them in another trade for a corner OF. With Orlando Hernandez coming back, they won’t really need him. El Duque should do well in that role, but there’s really no shot of him coming back beyond that. Same thing with Alou and Delgado. The only free agent’s the Mets will likely try to bring back in the offseason are Easley, Tatis and possibly Oliver Perez and Pedro Martinez if they develop enough consistency.
