Last night, Carlos Beltran quickly set the tone as he hit a three-run homer off of the Giants’ Tim Lincecum in the first inning.
Beltran was 3-for-4 on the night with four RBI and a run scored
Jerry Manuel, on Beltran’s offensive performance:
“If Carlos Beltran swings that bat the way we feel he’s capable of swinging the bat, in the position of the order that he’s in, it could be very, very damaging for the opposition. Like tonight, he got a big hit but then also got a base hit after hitting a three-run homer. Those things are important.”
…i don’t want to jinx anything, but is it possible that the team is finally firing on all cylinders…
…it has been much more fun watching them in the last week or so, but then again, winning is always more fun…

I attended last nights game and the crowd was hot the whole evening. From beginning to end, the Mets finally played like a co-hesive team.
And for those who purchased the Mets Home Opener pack (i.e., me, among others), we finally witnessed a Mets victory (five games into pack-lol).
good to hear — i was wondering how the crowd would react after so long on the road (only the three lowly Seattle series and a mixed Yankee crowd in the past 20 games)… hopefully the boo-birds are behind us?
The boo-birds are gone…as long as the winning streak continues.
Beltran is having a good year i know his homers are down but he is getting alot of doubles extra he has been a solid threat to back out all season.
Was a good one to watch. Pelf got out of first inning jam, Beltran gave him a nice cushion and he just rolled. I am very excited to see Pelf pitching this well.. Lincecum who?????????????/
Credit Pelfrey. He was dominant.
As for hitting, yes recently hot. “All cylinders” hot, I am not so sure.
Look, we start, generally with a death gap in 7-8-9, with “LFer”, “Schneid”-er, pitcher.
Sure Tatis has had a couple of good game at the plate, and he had great attitude and emotion, but I just do not think he is the solution.
I still believe we need to bring in an every day OFer, Tatis and Chaves everyday will not cut-it.
I think they are on their way to “firing on all cylinders” and may be almost there. I agree on the OF situation now more than ever as it seems from a few reports that church may be gone for the rest of the season. Man this team has some tough luck 06 with sanchez and now this…Omar better have his blackberry on and dont do anything stupid.
agreed, saying that they’re firing on all cylinders is a bit of a stretch. they’re playing well because their bench guys are coming through. expecting this to continue is an unfair expectation to place on the likes of chavez, tatis and easley. we’re still missing two regulars and have a very iffy #8 hitter against righties.
it’s nice to see they’re playing well while philly continues on their long ball or nothing offensive woes.
Currently 9-4 at games I have been to:
Starter:
Pelfrey 3-0
Figgy 2-0
Perez 2-1
Maine 1-0
Santana 1-2
Pedro 0-1
as long as the bench players stay hot until guys come back from the DL this team will continue to be win, or at least be competitive daily.
however, if we brought up Val Pascucci this team would be WS bound guaranteed!!!
Wrong, they will be WS bound if they sign Baseball’s been Barry Barry good to me Bonds.
Should it be a concern that this team is finally starting to go on a roll, and the all star break is going to stop the momentum?
im not…i expect them to have a monster second half..espeically where they are at in the standings should be motivation enough.
True. And Johan will start the first game after the break, so he should set the tone off right. I have a feeling he is going to have a monster second half too.
Yea. They will probably switch the rotation around as well to give the order we wanted going into this season
Santana
Pedro
Oliver
Maine
Big Pelf
Kind of a full roster when ya think about it if ollie can continue his sucess.
If Ollie can continue his success? I think we should be more worried about Pedro not leaving each game with an era of 5.00+ and pitching past the 5th/6th inning.
I think pedro will get better with the weather but thats my opinion…im more worried about an ollie regression than pedro.
The weather is fine – but so will be Pedro. He’s had a history of pitching well. I’d be worried about Ollie more than anyone as well…
No it should not be a concern. It will be a blessing that the whole team will get solid 3 days off, at no other point in the season do they get that long of a break. The only one without the break? Billy, but he’s going to suck and choke anyways, regardless of tired or not, so he doesn’t count anyways. Kunz can’t get here any quicker. If they finish up strong here against SF and COL (say win 4 of the remaining 5) that would put them at winning 9 of their last 11 going into the break. They’ll rest up and come back with the confidence that was so sorely lacking in the first half of the season. Meanwhile, the Phils are showing NO signs of turning around their swoon.
No, the MOJO is back. Yeah baby.
U know, I know no one on this thread is ripping beltran…but i must say, i DESPISE the beltran haters…
the guy plays consistent gold glove D, has i think 8 Rbis fewer than wright, and like 4 HRs fewer…he has over 60 runs scored, is wise on the basebaths in general, and is just overall one of our top 3 or 4 players…he doesnt get nearly as much fan fare..which is fine…but i hate the haters….
that being said, do you think Nicky Baseball will spell him in the field a few times if there’s a blow out now that he’s been called up for church???
thats right…i called nick evans NICKY BASEBALL
Beltran has more RBIs than any player on the Shankees, he’s always the best defensive CF in baseball, whats up haters?
a friend of mine on myspace, who is probably the dumbest mets fan i ever met, but thinks he knows everyhing RIPS him all the time, says he’s the worst CF cuz he plays back and lets things drop….but anyway, he made a bulletin on my space saying, and i quote
“beltran…why is this guy on my team? Makes me miss the days of Robbie Alomar”
so i deleted him…he’s currently teaching ESL in South Korea, other wise id drive to his house and slappp him
A – you’re on myspace.
B – you deleted a friend because he doesn’t like Beltran?
C – I feel sorry for your life.
lol good one
no, i didnt really delete him
and i got hooked on it 3 years ago when i found a TON of my old college buddies whom i never thought i’d see again…
but ur missing the point here, he said beltran makes him miss robbie friggin alomar…good God man..
he is a very very very very good CF but not the best…for a decade it was Andruw Jones hands down, no comparison and now Torrii Hunter or Coco Crisp. Sorry, I love Beltran as much as you do, but cmon…
The same Coco Crisp that lost the game for them last week when he was running back towards the fence and blindly threw his glove up in the air without even turning his head and making a legitimate attempt? Coco Crisp that has AS WEAK of an arm as Jonny Damon? Defense has more to do than just running and diving for catches, your arm is as big of a factor if not more. Please dude… Torrii Hunter? Isn’t that fool taking roids? C’mon bro.
The one hidden benefit of Pelf ande Ollie’s new-found consistency has been that they are also eating up some innings and the team is not leaning on the pen as much lately.
I like it that Pelf threw 113 pitches, but why was Johan pulled after 90 pitches last Friday and Ollie pulled after 7 innings on Sunday? I thought all along that Manuel would stretch these guys out more…
Ollie also threw about 115, Santana was pulled after 8innings 90 pitches because he just gave up 2runs in the previous inning, Manuel may have thought ht was losing it, it’s awful hard for a pitcher to make it around the lineup 4 times unscathed. Wasn’t a terrible decision.
As the saying goes, “Winning cures all.”
Trying to add levity to this overly-positive forum:
- You have to feel good about the way Heilman and Sanchez have been coming around, but Heilman’s propensity to give up gopher balls is still a bit troubling.
- Is Wags in another bad stretch here?
- teams scoring a ton of runs like the Mets are covers up problems at times.
- bench guys contributing, but we all know that guys like Endy get exposed when they start playing everyday. In the long haul, we really need Church back…keep Alou in a part-time role.
