Carlos Beltran is batting .269, and is on pace to hit roughly 25 HR with 115 RBI and 25 or so stolen bases, while playing a Gold Glove-caliber defense.
He hit .276 with 33 HR and 112 RBI last season, and .275 with 41 HR and 116 RBI in 2006 when he finished fourth in the National League MVP voting.
Beltran hit just .200 in April this season, while averaging one home run every 40 at bats. Since, he’s batting .290 while averaging one home run every 22 at bats.
He is hitting .286 with runners in scoring position, however just .158 with men on base and two outs.

B is for Beltran
Delgado is hitting now as well, so it makes the middle of the order that much more dangerous now that both Carlos’ are hitting at the same time. Delgado and Beltran just need to stay consistant. I know they’ll make outs, all baseball players do but if they can just stay out of a week long slump, the offense will be fine.
Everyone talks about how long can a combination of Tatis, Chavez and Anderson playing more than they should would last but if the middle of the order produces and the bottom of the order produces somewhat than they won’t look like a stagnate offense that can’t score runs.
It is incredilbe with the dreck that Beltran has had behind him this season that he is even hitting at all.
Yes but that dreck has been hitting as of late, so let’s cool it for awhile.
Beltran has been that dreck for a good portion of the season.
I gave Wright a C (no B- available), so I sure as hell aint giving Beltran nothing higher than that.
D is too harsh, so he gets a C.
I gave Carlos a B.
He started the year awfully, and his lack of productivity nearly killed the team. Beltran, however, has really turned things around. That being said, I know a lot of Mets fans hate him or view him as a dissapointment, but I’m not sure what they expect…. His numbers as a CF are impressive:
(1) He leads all CFs in runs scored
(2) He ranks 2nd in RBIS
(3) He’s 2nd in walks
(4) He’s 5th in OBP (he’s within 4 points of the #2)
And on top of all that, he’s played excellent defense this year.
He’s a phenomenal defensive outfielder, with a canon for an arm.
I personally didnt even mind the throw to 3rd the other day, if Wright had caught the ball at the very least he wouldnt have scored…maybe he would even have been out.
It reminds me of another throw he made…lets see if anyone else rememebers it: It was the first series of the season last year (2007) against the HATED Cardinals. There was a runner on second, single up the middle, Carlos comes up throwing to Home, guns him out, inning over. After the game LaRussa went on a tirade about how in the MLB you just dont make that throw, it was a bad decision, a bad throw wah wah wah. It wasnt a bad throw cause he threw the guy OUT at home. Now, back to the other day, it turns out that was a bad decision to throw to third, but only cause of the result, had he gunned him out, no one would be talking.
Anyway, long story short, i like Beltran’s risk taking attitude, you need that sometimes. He wont dive for balls (he doesnt have to most of the time, if he cant get to the ball, no one could) but he will occassionally make a throw that saves a run, or a game.
B for Beltran cause of his streaky hitting. I agree he needs to be in a different spot in the order.
I think the throw was a good thought; it was a little off, but Wright should have caught it first and tried the tag second. The only reason it went for an error was that Wright tried to do too much.
Met fans hate Beltran over one strikeout…
It was a big strikeout…Im over it but im sure people will hate beltran forever for that one ab
on a curveball that was absolutely pristine from wainwright. no one was touching that. classic 12-6. give the pitcher his due, he made a clutch pitch.
for real…he just got beat. it happens.
NO ONE could hit that pitch. nasty.
Yes, BUT even I knew that pitch was coming, at least take a stab at it….Beltran loves to just watch pitches, although he’s been coming alive lately…….B
He had a better chance of it being a ball then one he could actually hit.
And if he even got wood on that pitch, it would ended in a ground ball to short for the final out.
I don’t care about that strikeout anymore, 2006 passed and is over with. We can only look at the present team and hope they can maintain this hot streak.
exactly!…. you live in the past, you die in the past
B for me. Beltran plays a solid defense. I think hes out of position at cleanup but overall a B is fair
B … and that’s because he’s not hitting well.
Except for the brain fart at Philly the other day, he’s a force out there at center field. Best CF in MLB right now.
We really need a B+ rating here. Its too tough otherwise…
I hate these, he’s on pace to hit numbers. It’s very difficult to account for the fact that some players are better in the second half than they are the first and sometimes the other way.
Beltran will finish somewhere around his stats from last year all while playing great defense. He is the best ALL-AROUND CF in MLB.
i give him a B only because the HR’s are down…but honestly .. we all know that… like last year, hes gonna have a week in which he hits 4 or 5 and he’ll end up with 30 dingers…
honestly i dont know why he gets such a bad rap… the guy hits with no protection … and hes steppin up as a leader as well.
plays the best CF in baseball. drives in runs. walks a ton. scores a ton of runs. makes solid contact most of the time.
funny thing is..when hes gone, and replaced by a scrub… everyones gonna then realize …HEY, WE HAD ONE OF THE BEST CF of his time. GOD WE MISS HIM =]
BELTRAN – my favorite player.
I’m sort of surprised by all the B’s, considering that he was working his way past surgery in both knees at the beginning of the season, and despite that he’s still having an excellent year.
and hes pretty much healthy now && playing everyday. his numbers will def pick up. =]
What can you say? It’s tough getting A’s in New York and the fact that he didn’t tear off his uniform to reveal an S and do superhuman things like hit homeruns every AB, get a hit everytime and catch every baseball, I pretty much expected the B’s and C’s. lol
Here is what I mean. Check out these stats. Beltran is acutally doing better this year before the ASB than he did last season.
2007 Before ASB. .264 BA, .340 OBP, .477 SLG.
2008 Before ASB. .269 BA, .367 OBP, .478 SLG.
2007 After ASB. .293 BA, .372 OBP, .596 SLG.
2008 After ASB. ?????
And for those who say his HR’s are down, he had 16 HR last year before the ASB. Who’s to say he does not have that total this year as well?
In fact he has more, RBI’s, SB’s, and a lot more walks than last year at this time.
I never understand the hate for Beltran, it was happening before the SO. I think it’s contract jelously and the fact that he is a quite guy.
MEDIA.
portray him as a BALL PLAYER who has not lived up to the hype. Which is UNFAIR its own right.
yet they never knock a certain SS. in the mist of his worst season, making MORE money then BELTRAN. && BELTRAN’s numbers take a huge DUMP on JETERS
But Jeter is a spokesman.
Again, it’s a big story to the media because the fans allow it to be. I will never understand it. Who cares how much money he makes? He is the best player at his position in the game, why shouldn’t he be overpaid?
It’s probably the low batting average and streakiness. He goes through periods where he can look plain bad. That’s the issue.
He has a career .280 BA that’s not that low.
Besides, as I have shown above it’s not even that he is streaky. He just hits better in warmer weather.
Agony:
Stop blaming the media. That gets old.
But I was wondering why Jeter gets such a free pass.
You are right, the media is doing a job. The only reason it’s an issue is because the fans allow it to be. The media would not print it otherwise.
Me either. Other than Sizemore, he has been the best CF in the game for several years.
Sizemore is a better hitter, he is not a better ALL-Around CF.
Beltran has been fine so far this year. In terms of runs created he has 63, which makes him 2nd in CF this year to Nate McClouth who has 67. After those 2 the closest is Rowarnd with 49. His OPS is a little down from his career because his SLG is down from his career average, but on the other hand his OBP is currently 14 points than his career. I expect the slugging to come around in the second half and he could wind up having a better season than last year, just don’t expect a 2006.
His slugging is not down for his career before the ASB. It’s right on line. He is a 2nd half hitter. Check out his numbers, he is a CAREER .474 SLG. guy BASB and has a .524 AASB.
I believe you. I was just using career stats over a season, not before and after the All Star break.
All things considered (defense/offense/baserunning) Beltran is the best CF in baseball. I defy anyone to name a better CF. That said, he is not a cleanup hitter. he is a 2 or 3 hitter at most. very high OBP and good speed and pop. Can you imagine how many runs this team would score if we had a Big Papi hitting behind Reyes, Beltran, and Wright?
Anyway, I gave him a B because of the low batting average, but otherwise, I am more than thrilled to have him on my team.
We saw how potent this offense was when Delgado hit like Big Papi back in 2006. That is the biggest reason this team hasn’t been the same since – Delgado not being Delgado.
I would love to see him batting 2nd or 5th, especially 5th behind a good slugger.
I gave him an A (though B+ would have been appropriate) mostly b/c he is the best CF in the National League (sorry, he’s better than Hunter and McClouth at the end of the day). I still think he has a Houston Astro postseason or two in him for the Mets, as long as Delgado protects him.
Then wouldn’t he be the best in the MLB?
I agree. I too would have given him a B+ but since it’s not an option, gave him the A.
I also do not understand the Betran haters/traders on this blog. I would hate losing him and especially seeing him in another NL uniform….
I thought it was very uncharacteristic that Beltran basically called out David Wright for the mental error Beltran himself made in that last phillies game. why’d you do that, carlos? you’re usually a stand up guy.
I agree with you, I thought that was weird. But I chalked it up to him being a little defensive to the media finger-pointing in the aftermath of an almost disastrous comeback by the phils.
Regardless of whether Beltran’s throw was justified, Why does Billy Wagner get a free pass on not backing up 3rd????
it might irk beltran that he plays gold-glove defense all year with perhaps one or two mistakes and those mistakes are magnified where as wright can be a butcher at third costing a few games a year and gets very little flak along with an undeserved gold-glove last year.
no slight on wright who is a great player and has improved defensively.
I think that he was just trying to say that the throw was justified. He wasn’t really blaming DW, he was just saying that if it’s caught, it’s an out, not a bad throw.
Unrelated to Carlos Beltran (who rules, by the way),
As of today, The Mets now have the best PECOTA-adjusted postseason odds in the NL East.
Mets – 52.4
Phillies – 48.5
I do think if a hitter on the caliber of Moises Alou (notice I didn’t say Moises because when I see it I’ll believe it) was hitting behind Carlos his numbers would be much better.I mean if you had to pitch to Beltran or Delgado you would pitch to Delgado.
I like Carlos- He has a quite hustle. He is not loud outspoken brash. That’s just his personality.I wish Joe Begnino would shut up about Beltrans passion.he plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played-Smart
All I ask for is just one WFAN personality who is a rational, stat-oriented type. Maybe one of the Fire Joe Morgan guys can join The Fan.
We have the best centerfielder in baseball and that’s that. Name one guy you would rather have. Almost every game Beltran does something on D that makes my eyes pop, even if it is just cutting a ball off in the gap, or making an impossible play look like a routine fly ball. We knew when the Mets got Beltran that he wasn’t going to put up A-Rod numbers, most centerfielders don’t. He is what he is. He is a great ball player and I for one am glad he is on the Mets. I give him a B for this year and maybe even a B+ for his defense. He has also come up with some big hits, but Mets fans have short memories, unless it goes back to 06.
At a 4th of july bbq the other day I was talking with a friends father about baseball and he went off on how beltran was one of the bigest busts of all time (guess what team he roots for…)
I countered that, that sounds like someone who doesnt know anything about baseball and to name me 1 OFer that you would rather have.
He told me he doesnt know anyone else and to give him names.
I hate yankee fans.
Matt are we going to get a ‘report card’ listing all of the grades? I’m really interested in what everyone on this team got…
he’s a high B. More homeruns and it’ll be an A
