News: Alou has Torn Hammy, May have Surgery

by Matthew Cerrone on July 10th, 2008 at 4:43 pm

Following today’s game, Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters that Moises Alou has a torn left hamstring.

According to Minaya, Alou will most likely decide to have surgery, and, in either case, will realistically miss most, if not all, of the remainder of the season.

well, look, if you are shocked by the fact that alou could be gone for the season, you just haven’t been paying attention…

…it’s a shame that he’s out of the mix, but, at the same time, at least Omar Minaya can now operate knowing alou is out of the mix

postGame: Mets 7 Giants 3

by Matthew Cerrone on July 10th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

The Mets (48–44) defeated the Giants (39–53) by the score of 7 to 3 today, completing a three-game sweep.

The Mets have won six in a row, and eight of their last 11 games.

For a boxscore, recap, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

  • The Mets left men on first and second in the second inning.  But, in the same situation one inning later, Carlos Beltran drove home Argenis Reyes, which was followed by a bases-clearing double from Fernando Tatis.  The best part of the play was Beltran, totally blowing off a stop sign from third base coach Luis Aguayo.
  • In the fifth, John Maine, who was wild all day, erased his previous 105 pitches by letting the game become tied at three.  It’s a shame, because he was striking batters out left and right.  However, he had no command, and continues to go full on every batter, then goes through a foul-ball parade, thus jacking up his pitch count to a point where, even if he’s doing well, he must leave the game after five innings.  I’m a bit worried about Maine, because he just doesn’t look right, mechanically speaking.  Hopefully getting a few days off during the break will help.
  • Reyes, Argenis that is, nearly drove in a run with a hit in the gap during the sixth inning, but Randy Winn ran it down for an out.  Nice catch.
  • Speaking of nice catches, he made a nice pick up on a potential bunt, then flipped the ball with ease to Carlos Delgado for an out.
  • Following a lead-off double by David Wright, Fernando Tatis tattooed a fastball in to the bleachers in left-center for a two-run home run.  As my friend Johnny G said in a text message, ‘Tatis is partying like it’s 1999.’
  • Thank you, Jose Castillo, for throwing away an inning-ending ground out beyond first base, allowing an insurance run to score.  Reyes, Jose that is, then knocked home Brian Schneider to further expand the lead.
  • Lastly, Carlos Muniz, Scott Schoeneweis, Duaner Sanchez and Billy Wagner each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.  The bullpen did not allow a single run during the entire three-game series with the Giants.

The Mets start a three-game series with the Rockies tomorrow at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm, with Oliver Perez (6-5, 4.62 ERA) taking on Aaron Cook (11-6, 3.66 ERA).

Buzz: Mets and Others interested in Fuentes

by Matthew Cerrone on July 10th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

According to the Denver Post, the Mets are among five teams who have expressed interest in Rockies LHP Brian Fuentes.

however, the buzz from denver suggests that the Rays are most likely to grab fuentes, a) because they really, really need him, and b) are willing to part with type of high-quality, major-league ready prospect that colorado is seeking…

…frankly, i do not think the Mets have the type of expendable prospect that colorado wants…from what i can gather, tampa bay is interested in a pitcher like Yankees RHP Ian Kennedy or Rays RHP Wade Davis, which seems like an awful lot to me, especially considering that a left-handed reliever is far from the Mets biggest hole right now

In 40 appearances this season for the Rockies, the 32–year-old Fuentes is 1–4 with a 3.50 ERA, while striking out 35 batters in 36 innings pitched.

He has a 3.12 ERA in 20 appearance away from Coors Field.

Fuentes will be a free agent at the end of this season.

Note: Shea Breaking Down

by Regis Courtemanche on July 10th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

During last night’s rain delay, I took cover under the upper deck overhang.

Aside from the leaks happening everywhere, a guy in front of me, who couldn’t have been more than 100 pounds, collapsed through his seat.

It is sad how dilapidated Shea Stadium has become. Nearly every seat I occupy is either tilted or loose. I wonder if they even try to maintain it anymore with Citi Field looming in the distance.

by Matthew Cerrone on July 10th, 2008 at 1:04 pm

Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that he still expects to see Moises Alou contribute to the Mets at some point this season, regardless of the outfielder’s latest setback.

According to Manuel, “One thing about the Alou name, with that family, is that you never give up on them, regardless of what they go through.”
