News: David Wright is an All Star
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 11, 2008 1:39 pm

David Wright will replace Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano on the National League All-Star Team.

…thanks to superstar Jeff Goldman for the information

MLB.com reported earlier this week that Soriano is expected to miss at least six weeks after suffering a broken bone in his left hand on Wednesday night.

…unreal, after all of that voting wright gets in anyway

    Way to go, Kid!

  2. zer09 says:

Yay that makes me so happy…oh wait, i got nothing invested in this…hmm..

well anyway, congrats david…i hope you don’t strain yourself too much at the game…but you do get a cool jersey…

  3. AzMetsFan says:

    Congrats David!

I hope you go in there with a chip on your shoulder and knock some balls out of the park!

  4. shea1012 says:

    I don’t see this verified anywhere…

  5. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

    Congrats David!

Now we just have to get Reyes and Santana in the game (it’s a joke neither of them are on the team and Wagner is)

  6. Just stay out of the HR Derby.

  7. Hubie says:

I hope so. The Mets needed to have another rep with the game in NYC this year. Anyway, its totally awesome.

  8. murpheeee says:

personally I would rather not go than sneak in the back door like that…..but then its probably worth a big fat bonus so he’s probably delighted

    • The front door is equally a joke. Wright deserved to be on the roster by any means.

    • nice15gamesAlou says:

congrats David! Now I WILL tune into the game!
Go get our home advantage for the WS

    • jimyager says:

I don’t really care about the All-Star game. I don’t even watch it and it menas nothing to me. I dont want to watch the Phillies, Marlins and Braves play on the same field as the Mets. I could care less about any other team or players. I think its over rated and the way the team is selected s a big joke. They team should be picked based on stats from the end of one All-Star game to the next and forget this one player from every team thing. If the Yankees, Red Sox Cubs or Mets have 5 or 6 players leading in stats then GREAT put them on the team. I think that Varitek is a joke, he is batting .219..heheheheheheh

  9. nomoredelgado says:

    fine

  10. SheaSantana6408 says:

Im glad our boy got in! Especially after voting for him 25 times yesterday.

  11. QueenOfQueens says:

    I can’t find info on this either…

  12. njmetfan11 says:

If he goes in the Home Run Derby, he better get traded. David, in life you say no to 2 things: Drugs, and the Home Run Derby.

    • He said on the radio a couple of days ago that he doesn’t want to do the Home Run Derby

    • metsfan227 says:

People have to get past this. Since 2006 he has said over and over that he thought it was a one time thing for him.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

they already announced who is in it…pay attention more

    • starz31 says:

You need to clarify that statement. “In life, PROFESSIONAL athletes say no to drugs…”
Don’t drag the rest of us into it. lol

  13. AngryFan says:

Good, can all the hysteria over this “snub” go away now please

  14. njmetfan11 says:

Although I am very happy for David because he was really down on not making the team, I would be interested to see how David’s play would be affected after he didn’t make the team. I thought that he would have a chip on his shoulder in the second half and elevate his game. Oh well, I guess that is me to think. Good luck Davie, I can’t say I’m not happy for him, I know how much this meant for him.

    • metsfan227 says:

Well, considering how well he played last year after playing in the ASG I don’t think he needs any *chip on his shoulder* to do well in the second half.

    • LGNYM says:

I don’t think motivation has ever been an issue for David so I don’t think he needs a “chip on his shoulder” or that not making the All-Star team would really give him one.

Good for him, he wanted to go, and he deserved it! Hope he has fun and a great 2nd half like he did last season

  15. Joebaby says:

Oh geez, enough of this all-star crap.
We couldn’t leave Wright alone and let him have an extra day off?

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

hes not doing anything, the game is in ny and he probably only play an inning or two…get over this “rest” garbage…HES 25 not 45 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Nightlife says:

Pretty sure Soriano broke his hand like a month ago and not on Wednesday.

  17. QueenOfQueens says:

    Here it is:

    Wright takes Soriano’s All-Star spot
Mets third baseman ends up on third straight team
    Major League Baseball

Alfonso Soriano was elected to start the game in the outfield, but a broken hand will keep him out. (AP)

Third baseman David Wright of the New York Mets will replace fan-elected starting outfielder Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs on the National League All-Star roster. N.L. All-Star manager Clint Hurdle of the Colorado Rockies made the announcement today in conjunction with Major League Baseball.
Soriano, who is currently on the disabled list, is unable to play in the 2008 All-Star Game but will attend the festivities. Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday, the All-Star reserve outfielder who received the highest vote total on the Player Ballot (461 votes), will replace Soriano as a starting outfielder for the National League.

Wright, who had been a candidate in the Monster 2008 All-Star Final Vote, will be making his third consecutive appearance in the Midsummer Classic. Wright (.288, 17 homers, 70 RBIs) was a fan-elected starter in 2006 and 2007.

  18. Agees Catch says:

How can you be down on the all star game? It’s the only game where the defense actually shows up!

  19. SheaSantana6408 says:

Another thing how does the brewer fan base (Corey Hart) out vote the Met base??

Wisconsin’s Population is 5,556,506 while New York’s is 19,306,183. I know you have the yankee factor in NY but come on, NY is 3.4 times more populous!

    • MizzIKE says:

Not to mention when you compare census MSAs, New York City’s has over 18million people where Milwaukee has only about 1.5million people.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

But they have a lot more time on their hands out there in Wisconsin to sit on the computer and vote all day, every day.

    • sincekindergarten says:

But . . . their fan blogs probably made pacts with an AL team’s blogs to get Hart there. Let’s face it, the Mets have more haters around the league than fans. According to the figures above, there’s damn near 280,000,000 fans that may not like the Mets.

  20. stumped1 says:

the game is a joke and if it has to be played, it should be played after the season anyway. players should be focusing on their teams, not this fiasco.

  21. MizzIKE says:

    This is good to hear.

As much as I’d like Wright to get the extra day off, the game is in NY and it would be ridiculously sad if Wagner was our only representative.

  22. metsfan227 says:

I don’t think this is all that *unreal* given that both managers said that they would wait until after the *Final Vote* results to announce any replacement players.

It sems to me they were waiting to see who came in second, etc. to make replacement selections. Therefore, I don’t find it all that surprising that Wright was ultimately selected.

  23. dave27 says:

Ugh…so the announcement yesterday was that Hollday was replacing Soriano as the STARTER and was already on the roster? How did everyone get this wrong?

    Alot of annoyance for nothing.

    Good, he belongs there.

    • metsgirl212 says:

nobody got it wrong dave, people just panicked and didn’t read it carefully and missed that detail

  24. ninohernes says:

I am SO happy that Dave made it!

    WAY TO GO DAVE!!

  25. MetsFan4Decades says:

I don’t understand how some can say the All Star game is a ‘joke’…

Only thing I can figure is you’re not really a fan of the game itself, just your team. Must only be interested in any game that has an impact on the standings – i.e whether your team gains/losses a game in the standings.

I, for one, enjoy watching the All Star game, no matter if ‘my team’ is well represented or not.

And good for DWright – especially since he really wanted to participate.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      *gains/loses

    • Nightlife says:

I like the All Star game from an entertainment perspective (I usually watch it every year), but in terms of who and how the players get on the team is an utter joke.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

‘in terms of who and how the players get on the team is an utter joke’

        No doubt about that.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

It tends to be a “joke” in my view because players are trying not to get injured and are shuffling in and out of the lineup in a very “unnatural” way. It’s just not particularly good baseball, and then there’s the ridicu-hype and marketing mess that insults your intelligence.

  26. mrBill aka DWright says:

I guess all the begging on this site, mets.com, Shea and from Wright himself worked . The whole thing is embarrassing.

    • metties1 says:

Don’t forget the people with usernames that have DWright in it…

I think the point is that he deserved to be there more than others that were already in… So this is kind of apropos

      • mrBill aka DWright says:

Don’t forget the people with usernames that have DWright in it…….. haaaa, obvioulsy you don’t know what this username means. ha ha ha

        • metties1 says:

I guess I don’t, but my real point was downplay the promotion of him being named to the all-star team as being embarrassing. There are much more embarrassing scenarios for this team to find itself in, as they have demonstrated on multiple occassions…

Besides, it’s not like they had the American Mustache Institute pleading with fans or having fake mustache promotions at the stadium. They merely encouraged fans to vote one of their players in who deserved to be there, which is no different than a manager expressing he felt his player should be there, which happens all of the time…

        • toomanyuniforms says:

I think his name means “troll.”

    • LGNYM says:

Embarrassing? What the Mets did paled in comparison to other teams. DW said he wanted to go when asked, hardly an all out campaign, Hart was on a bunch of national radio shows campaigning for a spot. And the Phils were having all their employees vote for Burrell, while the Brew Crew had logos on the field about voting for Hart, and the Yankees handed out mustaches for Giambi. With all that, I don’t see how a few announcements at Shea qualifies as embarrassing.

  27. metties1 says:

Off topic, but since this post is newer, I’ll put it here. Juan Rivera is hitting .221 in 35 games after last night. So to all of the people saying they don’t want a .194 hitter (and completely ignoring his career stats), you’ll need to revise your comments

I think he is the perfect solution. Would I like a marquee player in the outfield? Of course, but it is not a viable option for this team. They knew when they emptied the farm for Santana, they were preventing themselves from being able to do it before the trade deadline. Juan Rivera is perfect because, he won’t cost you much. He is the type of aquisition who has us coming up with phrases “In Omar we trust” A perfect Change of Scenery candidate, even though his current funk is only a culmination of 77 AB’s.. Go get him today

    • MetsGuy says:

I agree, get him now and let him start in LF. Give him a couple of weeks if he does nothing you still have time before the deadline.

  28. GravediggerHebner says:

After all the outrage and uproar over who was or was not voting, and if they were, how many times they were doing it, and what # of times voting constituting whether one was or was not a Met fan, for him to get in on the whim of a manager as an injury substitute is a fitting end to a week of high comedy and unnecessary bickering.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Clint Hurdle probably took the second place finisher to Corey Hart. So if we didn’t vote, Pat Burrell could have finished second and been selected to go instead of Wright.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

        Or, he could have taken a quick look at his roster and thought “I have 6 OF, 3 C, 3 1B, 3 SS, 2 2B & 2 3B, I should ‘probably’ pick a 2B or a 3B instead of a 7th OF.”

  29. TenTonHammer says:

Just for the sake of numbers, this is David’s 3rd All Star selection.

Do you think he’ll finish with 10 or more?

  30. metfan435 says:

I think David should thank Clint Hurdle by taking a couple out tonight and over the weekend.

  31. Prismo says:

    Way to go Wright!!!!

  32. zen says:

reyes is having a better year, but it’s nice to see wright make the team :)

  33. VCarver says:

Wonderful! He should have been named to the original squad but at least this rectifies the error.

Congrats David and do us proud!*

*Wright will come up in the ninth with the game tied and hit a game-winning HR for a NL win!

    • CaseStreet says:

I said that earlier to my co-worker, except the HR comes off of Mariano after Jeter and A-Rod go 0-8 and one of them drops a foul ball that could’ve ended the game.

  34. commentswontnestbelowthislevel says:

ugh….was hoping he’d get the time off.

    Anyways…congrats to David

    • TenTonHammer says:

Well, he’ll still get time off, just not the full four days.. And there’s no travel involved this time.

  35. CaseStreet says:

I was listening to Cal Rikpen on the fan this morning talking about how he went to the All-Star game 19 times. Would be great if Wright had a similar career. Anyway, he was saying that being at the game is a far greater benefit to the player than getting three days rest. Congrats David!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Careful with that. I keep envisioning Peter Angelos giving Wright a massive contract when his current Mets’ contract expires (admittedly far, far in the future, but he’ll still have plenty of good years left.) His boyhood hero (Ripken,) the legacy of Brooks Robinson, it’s (kind of) close to home, shorter fences, etc., etc., etc.

  36. metslover5 says:

He gets to have a chip on his shoulder by not getting in at first and gets to go. =)

  37. ebfnyc says:

I said this exact thing on the blog — he would replace soriano.

    look it up.

    • Danny1986 says:

      please post your address.

There’s a cookie with ebfncy’s name on it that I need to FedEx.

  38. toomanyuniforms says:

Way to go Rest Fascists! Now he goes ANYWAY, and was snubbed by the fans. Great move!!!

Actually, good move by Hurdle. It puts MLB and Hurdle in a weird spot, because just about every year, one or two guys are going to be dropped off at the last minute. If you go for the next two guys in the “Final Vote” tally, it does tend to diminish the import of that vote. But, on the other hand, if you let Hurdle pick, say, Reyes, you wonder why the heck Reyes wasn’t in the “Final Vote” group. I guess if you already had too many guys at a given position, you could dip into a different well, but . . . anyway, it doesn’t take a genius to see that whole thing is tangled up in its own cross-marketing BS.

  39. swirlywand says:

can we not all JUST BE HAPPY FOR DAVID!??!?!?!

    argh.
    Let’s go Mets!

  40. roman411 says:

David Wright’s statement was just released:

“Know what? Keep your **** pitty admit! I’m going to watch the game on TV at home with a super model, thanks!”

    :P

    D-dub! FTW!

  41. cver says:

Congratulations to David Wright. A little sad that he had to go in the “back door” to the All Star Game, now just don’t get injured.

  42. Danny1986 says:

    Good Job, young man.

  43. DAK442 says:

I know it’s supposed to be cool to say you don’t care, but I’m excited and happy for David. Now I can wach the game and at least have something to carry me through the vomit-inducing Yankee Stadium Goodbye hype.

And I guess I won’t bring a Corey Hart Sucks banner to Shea tomorrow.

  44. KFS says:

Biggest loser on this news: Dianna Russini. She was probably looking forward to a nice little extended weekend away with DW after he lost the vote…

  45. cmac says:

hey david, if you are reading this, i won the geico dream seats for wednesday night’s game, give me a wave!!!!!

  46. bittergreen says:

Dang. That’s commitment. I thought I was hardcore for voting 15 times in a row.

  47. sincekindergarten says:

I think I hit 125 votes in the few days the contest was open. My employer won’t be pleased, but . . . a lot of the higher-ups where I work are Mets fans.
