Quote: A-Reyes is Talented on Defense

by Matthew Cerrone on July 11th, 2008 at 10:32 am

In his 13 at bats since joining the Mets on June 3, 2B Argenis Reyes is batting .308 with three runs scored.

He has yet to draw a walk, making his On Base Percentage the same as his batting average.

Jerry Manuel, on A. Reyes, while speaking to reporters following yesterday’s game:

“I did not realize that defensively he was as talented as I see now. We were trying to consider him as a utility player. Second base seems to be a place he’s very comfortable with and plays very well.”

…in short, he’s sort of like Anderson Hernandez Redux…

Quote: F’Mart would have been Here

Fernando Martinez missed 60 games last season because of a fractured  bone in his right wrist.

In a report about the future of Jerry Manuel for Newsday, David Lennon quotes Mets Asst. GM Tony Bernazard as saying of Martinez:

“If he didn’t miss that time, he’d be in the majors this year.”

This season, despite missing five weeks with a hamstring injury, Martinez is batting .298 with 18 extra base hits, four stolen bases and 21 RBI, while striking out 48 times in 51 games for Double-A Binghamton.

Quote: Battle a Little More

by Regis Courtemanche on July 11th, 2008 at 7:40 am

In last night’s win against the Giants, John Maine lasted four and two thirds innings and allowed three runs on two hits while walking five and striking out eight.

Maine, on his outing:

“It was just an all-around bad performance…The only positive that came out of it is we won. It was just a bad performance…Things are going to happen. I know you’re not always going to go out there and be perfect. There are times where I think I should battle a little more probably. It doesn’t happen sometimes.”

…maine is always hard on himself which probably helps to make him better, but last night was a weird game for him…eight strikeouts is great, but not indicative of how erratic his location was…but hey, a win’s a win…

Quote: Manuel is our Boss, but also a Friend

by Regis Courtemanche on July 11th, 2008 at 7:31 am

The Mets are 14-9 since Jerry Manuel took over for Willie Randolph as manager of the Mets.

The team has scored 69 runs in their last 10 games, during which the are 8–2.

Prior to yesterday’s game, Billy Wagner told reporters:

“He can be your friend, but he’s also the boss. You don’t got to like him, but you’ve got to respect him. That’s exactly how I think we look at it.”

Speaking of Wagner, in his recent Rumblings & Grumblings column for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark quotes him as saying:

“I don’t want to bash Willie, because I liked him. But before, it was more of The Yankee Way. It wasn’t The Mets Way. There was no facial hair. You could never have music in the clubhouse. You couldn’t have kids around. Believe it or not, some of us in here actually like kids…We’ve found out it’s pretty easy to play when you stop playing for stats and just go out and play hard and play to have fun.”

According to Stark, “Manuel has loosened all those reins and told his players to ‘play hard, play fearless and have fun.’

Following yesterday’s game, David Wright told reporters:

“We’re getting that attitude back, that swagger, that confidence back that we haven’t had all year.”

Yesterday, as Manuel left the podium following his post-game talk to reporters, the team’s spokesman announced that Omar Minaya would be entering the room with news.

“He’s going to sign me to about a 10-year deal,” Manuel said, while walking off the stage with his booming laugh.

For more, check out Dan Graziano’s column for the Star Ledger, and David Lennon’s report for Newsday.

…leave it to billy to reopen closed wounds…i can’t deny that the team has played much more inspired ball of late and the coaching change is probably a factor, but although i don’t disagree with him, billy should have just left well enough alone…
