Health: Church has Migraines, Pagan on his Way

by Matthew Cerrone on July 12th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Prior to today’s game, Ryan Church told reporters that he recently spent time at the Cleveland Clinic, where doctors confirmed that his recent headache, fatigue and dizziness were primarily caused by migraines, as he suspected.

Church, on his timetable, while talking to reporters, said:

“I’ll be back sooner than a lot of people are saying out there, sooner than I’ve been reading…I won’t be sitting the rest of the year out.”

Also, Omar Minaya told reporters that expects Angel Pagan to return to the Mets in Cincinnati during their first series after the All-Star break.

Health: Pedro will Make his Next Start

by Matthew Cerrone on July 12th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Following the game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Pedro Martinez will, ‘no doubt,’ be able to make his next start.

According to Manuel, Martinez may have ‘tweaked’ his groin or hip while running the bases recently, and, as such, must have been putting added pressure on his shoulder, which, typically, has a ‘click,’ at times.

Martinez, following the game, told reporters:

“It was strictly precautionary.  The doctor already checked my shoulder.  The flexibility is there, the strength is there.  There is nothing bothering me.  I was fine, except my groin is a little sore…In my way I asked to stay in, in an educated way, I tried to fight him, and [Manuel] said, ‘No.’  I said let me warm up, and he said, ‘No.’  I said, ‘I’ll be smart about it,’ and he said, ‘No, you’re still coming out.’…He can be tough, even with an old goat like me…It’s nothing to panic about and I have plenty of time to get my groin rested.”

Manuel described the incident as, ‘No big deal,’ saying Martinez was essentially removed for precautionary reasons.

postGame: Mets 3 Rockies 0

by Matthew Cerrone on July 12th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

The Mets (50–44) defeated the Rockies (39–56) by the score of 3 to 0 in Shea Stadium.

The Mets have won eight games in a row.

The Phillies lost today to the D-Backs, meaning the Mets and Phillies are tied in the loss column for first place in the NL East.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

  • Pedro Martinez left today’s game after the fourth inning with tightness in his right shoulder.  To that point, he had allowed no runs and just one hit.
  • The game ball, however, goes to Carlos Muniz, Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis and Billy Wagner, who pitched five innings and did not allow a hit or run, while striking out four batters and walking one.  The bullpen has been outstanding the last week.
  • In the fourth inning, Carlos Beltran reached second base on a double and then stole third.  Fernando Tatis knocked him in with a single.  Interestingly, stealing third didn’t just advance the runner, but it forced the defense to play in on the infield, and, sure enough, the ball Tatis just skipped beyond the infielder’s glove and Beltran scored.  It’s always the little things.
  • In the fifth inning, Jose Reyes hit a solo home run, and looked totally pumped up when walking the dugout.
  • In the sixth inning, Carlos Delgado singled to right field, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice, the scored on a double by Brian Schneider.
  • In other words, ‘Get ‘em on, get ‘em over, get ‘em in.’
  • Matt Holliday, do you like Shea Stadium?  Just curious.
  • David Wright made a fantastic, leaping grab to pull in the game’s final out.

The Mets end their three-game series with the Rockies tomorrow at Shea, starting at 8:05 pm on ESPN, with Mark Redman (2-4, 7.07 ERA) taking on Mike Pelfrey (7-6, 3.93 ERA).

One player Manny Acta seemed to change is Cristian Guzman. Since the start of 2007, he’s hit .320 with a .356 OBA and a .441 slugging percentage. For his career those averages sit at .268/.305/.383.

Charlie Morton faces Braves legend Greg Maddux in San Diego tonight. With a 6.84 ERA, Morton can take some solace in the fact that Maddux’s ERA was over 5.50 his first two seasons.

Phillies starter Adam Eaton owns the highest ERA in the majors, 5.87, since the start of 2007 among pitchers with at least 200 IP.

Hanley Ramirez increased his OBA and Slugging Percentage in each of his Major League seasons. He needs to raise his batting average another 20 points to .333 to raise all three averages this year.

Buzz: Mets have most Interest in Ibanez

by Matthew Cerrone on July 12th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

According to Anthony Rieber in Newsday, citing ‘a baseball official,’ Mariners OF Raul Ibanez is on Omar Minaya’s radar.

In the New York Post, Joel Sherman writes that Ibanez is Minaya’s ‘most likely target.’

According to Sherman, “The Mets believe if they are willing to take on money that they might be able to use a Double-A corner player such as Mike Carp, Nick Evans or David Murphy to complete a deal.”

As Rieber points out, “He’s a Manhattan native and friend of Carlos Beltran, a teammate from their Kansas City days.”

Sherman also lists Tigers OF-1B Marcus Thames, Giants OF Randy Winn and Brewers OF-3B Bill Hall as also being on Minaya’s radar.

Sherman also lists five teams who continue to express interest in Aaron Heilman, all of whom believe he is miscast as a reliever and should be given a shot to start.
