postgame: Mets 7, Rockies 0

by Jordan Zakarin on July 13th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

The Mets (51-44) defeated the Colorado Rockies (39-57) by the score of 7 to 0 in Shea Stadium.

The win gives the Mets nine wins in a row heading into the All Star break.

The Phillies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, keeping the Mets and Phillies tied in the loss column for first place in the NL East.

  • Mike Pelfrey was again fantastic, moving his record to 8-6 and lowering his ERA to 3.63. He tossed eight more shutout innings, and did not walk a batter. Including the last inning of his July 3rd start against the Cardinals, Pelfrey has now not allowed a run in sixteen straight innings, and just one in his last 24. He has lowered his ERA a shade over a full run in the past month.
  • Pelfrey looked absolutely dominant, using his devastating sinker to induce 15 ground ball outs and firing his newly rediscovered 95 mph 4-seam fastball to change the eye level of the confounded Colorado hitters.
  • Carlos Beltran hit a big three run homer, his 15th of the year in the bottom of the first, setting the tone for the team’s offense. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.
  • Later, in the fifth inning, Carlos Delgado hit a monster two run shot, his 17th, to right center.
  • Damion Easley made an awesome play at the pivot, scooping up a bounced throw from David Wright, dragging his foot across the bag and firing a bullet to Carlos Delgado to complete a big double play.
  • Jose Reyes was the subject of a big segment by Peter Gammons, who outlined just how important he is to this team, and Jon Miller brought up the fact that, for a guy hitting over .300 with 20+ doubles, 10 triples, 10 homers, 63 runs and 32 SBs, it’s strange that he’s not on the All Star team. I think it’s mostly to do with the temper tantrums and the residual effects of his public struggles the second half of last season, but either way, he should be in the Bronx… for just one day, of course.
  • I know the All Star game is at Yankee Stadium, but sheesh, did anyone tell Joe Morgan, Jon Miller or anyone else at ESPN that this was a Mets game, being played at Shea? if I had to hear one more reference to the House that Ruth Built, I was going to be sick.

The Mets now head into the All Star break, with three days off before they take go to Cincinnati to take on the Reds. David Wright and Billy Wagner will represent the Mets in Tuesday’s All Star game at Yankee Stadium.

…having won nine in a row, the All Star break is coming at the worst possible time… let’s just hope they take a quick breather and continue on this hot streak…

Note: Davey Johnson in a Mets Hat

by Matthew Cerrone on July 13th, 2008 at 1:19 pm

Davey Johnson is wearing a Mets cap while serving as manager of Team USA in this afternoon’s Future’s Game.

Johnson told reporters that he chose to wear the Mets hat because, being that the game is in New York, ‘It just seemed right.’

…that’s very cool…of course, it’s the black cap with blue brim…but, nevertheless, still cool to see davey rocking the blue and orange

Note: F’Mart in Futures Game on ESPN Today

by Matthew Cerrone on July 13th, 2008 at 9:03 am

Fernando Martinez will represent the Mets on the World Team during today’s MLB Futures Game at Yankee Stadium, which will air live on ESPN at 12:30 pm.

In 218 at bats for Double-A Binghamton this season, Martinez is hitting .294 with four HR, 21 RBI and 48 strike outs in 52 games.

He missed nearly five weeks with a hamstring injury earlier in the year.

…i have been sent e-mail of late suggesting i am anti-martinez or too tough on him, which is ridiculous…i am super excited for The Teenage Hitting Machine, and hope the Mets do not trade him…in fact he’s the only player i would describe as untouchable…that said, and what i had been saying over the last few weeks, is that, i believe his value may have dropped of late, because, despite his young age, he has yet to meet the hype by being hurt so much and not stringing together a dominant run in the minor leagues…that’s all

either way, i am really excited to see him play today

By the way, hats off to our friend Jonathan Mayo, author of Facing Clemens and minor-league guru for MLB.com, who will be a sideline reporter for ESPN 2 during today’s game.

Stat: Three Hits or Less

by Regis Courtemanche on July 13th, 2008 at 8:19 am

In their past five games, the Mets have only allowed four runs and 13 hits to their opposition.

They have also pitched three shutouts and the bullpen has not given up a run in 18 1/3 innings.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Mets are the first team since 1900 to allow three or fewer hits in five consecutive games.

Carlos Beltran, speaking about the team’s pitching, following yesterday’s win against the Giants:

“Our starting pitching has been great.  We know we’re going to get six, seven strong innings and our bullpen is coming in and shutting the door on the opponents.”

…what hasn’t been going right lately…the team is having more fun, their confidence is back, and the vibe at Shea has certainly been much better these days…

eight game winning streaks will do that of course…

Read: Today, In the NL East

by David Pinto on July 13th, 2008 at 7:39 am

Marlins SS Hanely Ramirez slightly injured his shoulder on a throw and had to leave the game Saturday night. Ramirez told reporters that he’s OK.

The Nationals grounded into four double plays Saturday night, extending Baseball Musings Logotheir lead in the National League to 98. Only Toronto, with 101, has more in the majors. Lastings Milledge leads the team with 13.

The Phillies are talking to the Rockies about reliever Brian Fuentes. With Eaton’s blowup Saturday, however, it appears Philadelphia needs starting pitching more than they need bullpen help.

Braves 3B Chipper Jones broke a 1-for-18 slump with a 3-for-4 night on Saturday, raising his batting average to .378.
