postgame: Mets 7, Rockies 0
By Jordan Zakarin - Jul 13, 2008 11:03 pm

The Mets (51-44) defeated the Colorado Rockies (39-57) by the score of 7 to 0 in Shea Stadium.

The win gives the Mets nine wins in a row heading into the All Star break.

The Phillies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, keeping the Mets and Phillies tied in the loss column for first place in the NL East.

  • Mike Pelfrey was again fantastic, moving his record to 8-6 and lowering his ERA to 3.63. He tossed eight more shutout innings, and did not walk a batter. Including the last inning of his July 3rd start against the Cardinals, Pelfrey has now not allowed a run in sixteen straight innings, and just one in his last 24. He has lowered his ERA a shade over a full run in the past month.
  • Pelfrey looked absolutely dominant, using his devastating sinker to induce 15 ground ball outs and firing his newly rediscovered 95 mph 4-seam fastball to change the eye level of the confounded Colorado hitters.
  • Carlos Beltran hit a big three run homer, his 15th of the year in the bottom of the first, setting the tone for the team’s offense. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.
  • Later, in the fifth inning, Carlos Delgado hit a monster two run shot, his 17th, to right center.
  • Damion Easley made an awesome play at the pivot, scooping up a bounced throw from David Wright, dragging his foot across the bag and firing a bullet to Carlos Delgado to complete a big double play.
  • Jose Reyes was the subject of a big segment by Peter Gammons, who outlined just how important he is to this team, and Jon Miller brought up the fact that, for a guy hitting over .300 with 20+ doubles, 10 triples, 10 homers, 63 runs and 32 SBs, it’s strange that he’s not on the All Star team. I think it’s mostly to do with the temper tantrums and the residual effects of his public struggles the second half of last season, but either way, he should be in the Bronx… for just one day, of course.
  • I know the All Star game is at Yankee Stadium, but sheesh, did anyone tell Joe Morgan, Jon Miller or anyone else at ESPN that this was a Mets game, being played at Shea? if I had to hear one more reference to the House that Ruth Built, I was going to be sick.

The Mets now head into the All Star break, with three days off before they take go to Cincinnati to take on the Reds. David Wright and Billy Wagner will represent the Mets in Tuesday’s All Star game at Yankee Stadium.

…having won nine in a row, the All Star break is coming at the worst possible time… let’s just hope they take a quick breather and continue on this hot streak…

    Pelfrey is 8-6, not 9-7.

    • gowrightgo says:

Pelfrey is doing more than coming of age or turning a corner on his development etc etc. Whatever the cliche’s are…toss them out.

Anyone else hear the comments from Manuel about Pelfrey on SNY?

to sum up it was basically, “Pelfrey is finding it and is slowly jumping over not only other guys on this team but is working toward becoming one of the top pitchers in the league”

I paraphrased it from memory but the gist was he is jumping over Pedro Maine and Ollie and similarly…with this kind of consistently very good performance, Pelfrey is working himself into a top level pitcher

I think I see it also. He ripped off a 96mph fastball in the 8th inning last night after 115 pitches have been thrown. He has gas, power sink, playing around with a curve. Love what he is becoming.

I honestly can see him developing into a Brandon Webb type pitcher.

  2. GravediggerHebner says:

Well, as a sports fan with no particular love for the All Star game I find these next 3 days to be the worst 3 days of every year. I guess I better check the Liberty’s schedule.

  3. njmetfan11 says:

I would like to not see the AS break, but I doubt it will impact this team greatly.

    • ridethesnake says:

      ONCE AGAIN:
I’ll keep posting this until it stops being ridiculous…

Since June 5, the Mets are 7-15 when Luis Castillo plays, and 14-1 when he does not play.

  4. curiojeff says:

Miller also made the blatantly inaccurate comment that the Beatles played their last-ever live concert at Shea Stadium. Uh… WRONG! That was at Candlestick in S.F. in ‘66. Do these announcers just make sh*t up?

    • Mets R Best says:

did really that HR by Delgado flew over Mount Everest?

    • Mookie1986 says:

Miller was more awful than usual tonight. Blunder after blunder after blunder.

He needs to just get out of that booth and take a vacation for a couple of months. Just recharge the batteries.

    • bhill410 says:

actually it was on top of the apple record building before the police shut it down. Neither here nor there tho

    • gomets6091 says:

wasn’t the Shea concert important b/c it was the first major outdoor concert, like, ever?

      • dave27 says:

No, it was important because it was the Beatles. I’m pretty sure in the history of mankind that someone performed music outdoors before 1965.

        • m00kie says:

not just important because it was the beatles.. from wikipedia:

“The Shea Stadium concert on August 15 was record breaking and one of the most famous concert events of its era. It was the first concert to be held at a major outdoor stadium and set records for attendance and revenue generation — promotor Sid Bernstein said “Over 55,000 people saw the Beatles at Shea Stadium. “

        • gomets6091 says:

oh, snap. Thanks for the backup mookie.

  5. Danny says:

There’s no excuse for Reyes to not be an All-Star. No reason to try and justify it.

    • chicagometfan says:

Pelfery’s streak of shutout innings go back to the cardinal game of July 3 not the Yankee game you refernced

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I certainly can’t justify it to myself, but apparently the millions of fans who didn’t vote for him and the manager, coaches and players who elected not to include him could.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Re: the fans, it’s not rocket science. He started slowly, and Hanley Ramirez didn’t. The Mets were hardly energizing fans to vote, either.

Re: the players, I’d imagine they aren’t as up on the day-to-day fluctuations in numbers unless it’s their next opponent, and I’d imagine there’s resentment of Reyes’ popularity and his . . . flamboyance.

  6. Mets R Best says:

    9 in a row !!!!!
    damn this break

    • gowrightgo says:

Agreed. It would be awesome if we could just keep playing and not interrupt this streak with the AS break. But maybe the guys need a blow and won’t lose the charge.

Omar gets a lot of grief for not anticipating Alou’s pathetic lack of health and Church’s concussion and mismanaging it. He also gets a ton of grief for not having tossed Willie earlier or for signing slappy mchappyton to a 4 year deal (Castillo).

But he should get immense credit for the things he has done this year alone.

      1) Got us Santana and did not give up Pelfrey, Maine, Reyes or Fmart to do it

      2) Brought in Easley who has performed brilliantly to date taking over for the injured Castillo

      3) Brought in Church who clearly has the potential to be our Paul Oneil if he can stay healthy

      4) Unearthed a done Tatis who has already this year hit 5 GW hits in his limited duty. Tatis may not be able to keep it up but his production in the recent weeks have been a big part of the growth of the team

      5) Not done anything yet with Delgado. Delgado is not all the way back but his numbers at this point in the season are not worth us fans continuing to push for his outright release. In fact, if he keeps this up and he leaves as a Free Agent next year, we can conceivably get Type A comp for him. Projecting his numbers out through the end of this season, he will get 25 – 30 hrs with 90 – 100 rbi. THat is not terrible and is a far cry from a guy who should be given his outright release as many here have promoted.

Omar is the reason we are a competitive team. From his player moves to the eventual timely release of Willie…it is his moves that have produced the possibility for these results. I realize we are feeling good having ripped off 9 in a row and it seems easier to say good job now than it was 2 weeks ago. But credit should be given to the guy at the helm.

I’m a fan Omar. Now please go get us one decent stop gap outfielder and possibly another reliever for the second half of the year!

  7. dominicanboy08 says:

just read on mets.com that castillo may not play everyday if easley continue to play this well….I like that!!!

    • stickguy says:

he can play every other neverday.

      Or FT in New Orleans.

    • mets484 says:

      easley all the way!!

    • Ceetar says:

Don’t believe everything you read, especially if it’s something Manuel said.

      • mattwalsh says:

ceetar all you do is talk negative nonsense every day.

        • ridethesnake says:

Ceetar’s comments defend Willie because he believes that managers have little to no influence on the team (”Managers are virtually worthless.”) and then is in total denial about how they started winning (”It’s freaking unbelievable the way this team has been playing, it’s like they suddenly turned a switch and started working. I don’t know what happened, maybe it was just they finally stopped west coast trips”) when the rest of the world knows it has been the change of manager.

        • ridethesnake says:

          Ceetar:
When you make a change, it should be a clean change and not just promoting this hack cause he’s there.

          Ridethesnake
Forget that the team is playing better, the strategies are sounder and the black cloud seems lifted, Manuel is 2 games over .500, and other than Seattle at home, Manuel’s Mets have played Colorado, Philly, Cards, Yanks, Angels and has played 14 of 20 of those games ON THE ROAD. Manuel can really create a distance from Willie’s sub-.500 numbers when he finally gets home against lesser teams this week.

  8. Reyes N Wright says:

buster olney just said on espn that he is curious to see what happens in the second half with our pitching staff cuz they are old. im pretty sure we have one starter over 30 which is pedro. such a yankee homer and an idiot

    • MyaGirl says:

His name is should be changed from Buster to Bozo.

      • SunsetParkBK says:

Doesn’t Buster Olney kind of remind you of Spence from “The King of Queens”……. He obviously made a mistake with his comment about the Mets starting rotation being “old”. I don’t know what he was thinking.

        • Two-By-Four says:

If I remember correctly (and at my age that is an accomplishment) didn’t Ken Rosenthal infer on the Fox Saturday Telecast that the Mets winning streak should be taken with a grain of salt because except for the 3 games against the Phillies the wins have all come at the expense of the weak NL West teams? If he had done his homework he would have known that the Mets had been losing to even woebegone teams such as San Diego. People that do these things for a living should do a little research before flying off at the mouth.

        • m00kie says:

as always, rosenthal is spouting off according to his version of “the narrative”. This guy talks and talks but never actually says anything worth hearing.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

That’s why I only turn the ESPN broadcast on at the actual game starting time, not the top of the hour, and why I shut it off as the final out is recorded.

    • ditas says:

The only person that has the pulse of baseball on that channel is Peter Gammons. As evidence, after the Sabathia trade, there were two blog headlines: “Cubs will move quick to acquire pitcher” written by Gammons and “Cubs will not respond quickly to answer Sabathia trade” written by Olney.

Hmmm, I wonder who was right? Gammons of course, as the Cubs made the Harden trade the day after the Sabathia trade.

ESPN is another reason why fans get so caught up with the trade deadline and then disappointed when no big trades happen. They hype it up as if it were the NFL draft and then not much of anything happens.

I don’t watch any baseball on ESPN unless its the only way to watch a Mets game.

      • m00kie says:

ESPN has completely F-ed their baseball coverage. Sunday night is actually a pleasure compared to listening to Steve Phillips and Orel Hershiser and that idiot play by play guy they put on mondays. Those guys think a baseball game is an opportunity for them to discuss every baseball issue in the world, and they’ll go 3 or 4 batters without commenting on the game. Then they cut to the booth to show the idiots not even watching, but engaged in their own conversations. Their “game breaks” make it even more intolerable as they cut, mid at-bat, to news that happened hours before.

ESPN’s attention span is just not long enough for baseball.

        • bittergreen says:

While having to listen to ESPN’s announcers isn’t the pleasure of listening to Gary, Ron and sometimes Keith. It’s not the pure pain of having to endure Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Hear, hear. Buck and McCarver have destroyed postseason baseball for me. (Oh, and I actually like Hershiser.)

    • QnsNative718 says:

I remember that comment Olney said on Baseball Tonight.. I had to play what he said over again.. His exact words when referring to the pitching staff ass was “too old”… huh? Every started other than Pedro is under 30…

  9. Tina says:

They said on the FAN broadcast that Jerry thinks the break is coming at an excellent time, because they’ve been pushing so hard. On all cylinders, knowing the break was coming.

  10. boozermetsfan says:

    GO BIG PELF!!!

  11. cdinero says:

damn pelfrey leads the staff in wins…

    • Mets R Best says:

just couple of innings short of going 13-0 ughhhh

    • ExileInLA says:

No – tied w/Santana & Maine, but Pelf & Maine have one fewer loss vs Santana’s much better ERA.

This is the Pelfrey that they always thought they had. He really put it together, and since he’s had less than 1 year in MLB before this year, he’s probably not arbitration eligible til after 2009 and he’s under Mets control thru 2012.

      • k-mets says:

I believe that I saw on one of SNy Mets game that he is over 1 year and 56 days in the MLB. Can some verify this? Thanks

  12. dominicanboy08 says:

if pelfrey continue to pitch like this, I will not be suprise to see a 17-11 record,,,who saw that coming,,amazing!!!

  13. Mookie1986 says:

I know this aint Coors, but this Rockies line-up has some solid bats in it. And yet the Mets pitching staff just completely picked them apart piece by piece.

What an absolute gem by Pelf! This was one of his most dominating performances as a professional, and even though I understand why he did not come out for a chance at the CG in the 9th, I kinda wish he would have been given a shot.

He handled Holliday and Atkins as if they were little leaguers! A thing of beauty.

Man is this a bad time for an AS break! No breaks! Keep playing!!!

    • Gina says:

Actually, as a team, they’re pretty sorry away from Coors. 2nd to last in average, last in slugging, 5th from last in obp.

      • Mookie1986 says:

Which is why I said I know this aint Coors.

Besides, you can’t think that way on the mound. They are still professional hitters, and if one day the Rockies decide to wake up and start playing up to their potential, certain guys in that line-up can do some serious damage.

    • beltran the warrior says:

he was around 125 pitches after the 8th. upset pelf didn’t get a chance at the cg? blame omar quintanilla. that guy had two brilliant at-bats with 10 or more pitches against pelfrey.

      • Mookie1986 says:

At a certain point in the at-bat, ya gotta just throw one high and tight and knock him on his rump. Sure the way the game is played today, Quintanilla would get all macho and start yelling at Pelf, the ump would warn both benches, and then Quintanilla could go right back to work knowing that the umpires have his back because pitchers are no longer allowed to brush guys back.

But at least he would have put a little fear of god into that pest. Not to mention the fact that it would have made that entire stadium roar.

Too bad Pelf is such a nice guy! :)

  14. brooklynmutt says:

It just dawned on me that Billy Joel will bring with him to Shea Stadium on July 16 more “hits” than Mets pitching has allowed in their last six games… nice

  15. SunsetParkBK says:

It feels so good to see all the “sports analysts” jumping on the bandwagon. Isn’t it funny how everyone seems to be running away from the Rays all of a sudden? Now all you hear is the ” I told you they wouldn’t keep it up”

    • gomets6091 says:

so is that blog gonna switch back to being a Mets blog again (I forget the name of it)

      • BernazardSucks says:

Metsgeek. They switched back about a week and a half later. It was a complete joke, that’s actually a great site for mets analysis/discussion with a statistical bent to it.

  16. SunsetParkBK says:

I’m so freaking sick of ESPN with their garbage. Who gives a sh*t about Titletown USA?

    • jimmyk456 says:

last i checked titletown was greenbay anyway why do they need a new one

      • toomanyuniforms says:

        Which titletown is more “now”?

        • BernazardSucks says:

LOL. That was the worst piece of garbage I’ve ever seen. the Who’s Now and Titletown are such crap. please just stick to reporting about sports news and spare us the fluff.

  17. Steven Hirsch says:

The only thing I can think of that Jon Miller is saying Bel-TRON, is to tick all of us Met fans off!!!!!

    • BernazardSucks says:

that’s actually how it’s supposed to be pronounced in spanish (with an accent on the “A”). Miller for the most part pronounces latino names very well for a white man.

  18. MetsFan21 says:

I have to say that this is the Mets team I have been expecting see play for all season, and having won nine straight games to head into the All-Star break seven games over .500. My wish is that the Mets continue this momentum once the break is over. With Mike Pelfrey and John Maine at 8-6; Johan Santana at 8-7 (who i think should be 11-4 with the lack of run support) and Oliver Perez at 6-5 (who I hope will be more consistent and less Jekyll & Hyde) – every start will be important because the second half only gets tougher with Philadelphia (8 games), Florida (12 games), St. Louis (3 games), Atlanta (9 games), Milwaukee (3 games) and the Cubs (3 games). Regardless of whether the Braves are out or not by September, the Mets will have to play by my estimates .680 ball (no worse than .590). Minaya will have a lot of pondering with the baseball people to determine what steps will need to be taken to improve the ballclub, especially with acquiring a corner Outfielder and pitching.

    • dominicanboy08 says:

I think our pitching is good enough to win the division, we need another power bat

    • metsfanmurph says:

Remember the furthest the Mets travel in the 2nd half is Houston. They have gotten all of the west coast trips out of the way.

      • mets484 says:

but that also hurts us, because the west coast sucks and we didnt get to take advantage of that because we also sucked back when we travelled there…. now the phillies get to feast on the weak NL West

although, of course its a big positive also obviously

        • Ceetar says:

I think part of the Mets struggles _was_ the travel.

The Phillies aren’t that good, and if anything the NL West can kinda pitch, which trips the Phillies up every time.

        • metphan says:

          4 games vs the cubs

        • mattwalsh says:

it’s interesting… i really have no idea what to expect. the energy level of this team was anemic for 80 or so games and now this.

can we play better than philly in the second half? i really think so. i really think we’re a better team. their lineup is incredible but their starters suck except hamels. if pelf and ollie can hold it together we are going to be *very* tough. especially in the playoffs.

  19. jimmyk456 says:

this is the first time all season we have beat up on the teams that we actually SHOULD beat up. we were always playing decent against other good ballclubs this season.

  20. kowalski69 says:

    Section 18 REPPED today.

8th inning Pelfrey chant was ECHOING through Queens.

You coulda heard it in Laguardia.

Anyone notice that there was only like 25,000 people there today? They place looked empty to me. I saw entire SECTIONS empty

    • 4eyeJoe says:

i think less people came to the game because it was a night game instead of a day game. people have to go to work tomorrow.

    • mets484 says:

lol i was in section 20 and heard your “section 18″ cheer with cowbell man…. idk why but it sounded like you guys were saying “lets go yankees” when you were really saying “section 18″ …. people actually started saying “yankees suck!!” in between your cheers lol

      • kowalski69 says:

ouch i hope we didnt get the wrong message out.

we dont endore yankee love/hate in section 18.

Thanks for your help with the lets go pelfrey chant. I did it twice and it caught on. the whole stadium was at it in a matter of seconds. greatest moment of the year so far at shea for me

cowbell man gets a kick out of section 18 :P

    • m00kie says:

was on the road last night and found the FAN coming through, 4 states away, and heard the 8th inning .. the pelfrey chant was coming through loud and clear.

  21. metsfanmurph says:

I actually think this is a great time for the All Star break. The Met players and us neurotic fans will go into a three day break feeling great about this team.

    • Bobby Bo says:

i hate how steve f’n phillips is jumpin on our band wagon now saying that were gonna win the division, when just a month he was talkin about how our organazation is a joke

      • ravin108 says:

I’m a Phillips hater too, but in fairness, the organization was a joke when they fired Willie

      • BernazardSucks says:

steve phillips should not be allowed to utter the name of our beloved organization. he’s right up there with scott layden and isiah thomas of Knicks fame in terms of horrible NY sports GMs.

  22. amazin92 says:

being in second right now is the best thing for the mets right now
it means they still have to fight and can be the underdogs

  23. ou812jay8 says:

After they way the Mets are streaking with their piching staff, I wonder if Rick Peterson’s phone has stopped ringing. “The Jacket” doesn’t seem like the genius anymore.

  24. GregB says:

    Shut up Joe!
    Shut up Joe!
    You’re a moron Jon!
    Shut up Joe!

What? The game’s over? Oh, Thank God!

I hate listening to those two.

ESPN, I’m begging you…PLEASE, no more Sunday night Met games!

  25. ou812jay8 says:

In regards to Jon Miller with the telecast, I firmly believe he is either playing dumb because he doesn’t want Joe Morgan to look like more of an idiot, or, after years working with Morgan, he just simply gave up.

    • Bobby Bo says:

what do u think willie randolph is doin right now…. hes gotta be sick!

      • ou812jay8 says:

I think Willie is in front of the mirror right now trying to do his best “gangsta” routine, saying things like, “I’ll cut ya!”

      • 4eyeJoe says:

i think willie is probably sitting in his sofa in front of the tv watching the mets game and thinking ” those are my guys out there, those are my guys out there”.

        • MetsGuy says:

Good for him. I don’t wish ill upon Willie. It was just time for a change. We all need to move on.

        • Ryn05 says:

          Pretty much.

It’s sad how some of you want Willie to suffer, I’ll always remember him as a part of that 2006 team.

        • irish_eagle says:

I still like Willie. I’m glad they made the move, but I can’t see wishing ill on him. I half wonder if they’d ditched Peterson before the season if Willie might still be in his job.

      • dave27 says:

        Counting his money.

      • Genesis Does says:

They finally got on that “nice little roll”

  26. Jay says:

Pedro Martinez is our FIFTH starter… Wow. How cool is that??

  27. ou812jay8 says:

I want Joe Blanton and Matt Murton from Oakland. Make Pedro the spot starter.

  28. Mr. Mets Butler says:

Anyone catch Morgan’s comment about the Easley double play?

‘He DRUGGED his right foot across the bag.’

Please Joe! Go get an education.

It’s horrible having to listen to these two tools on ESPN. No more Sunday night games please.

  29. dykstraw II says:

not to piss on anyone’s parade, but just as people said “it’s still early” when this team sucks, it’s still still early, and we still need some outfield help.

    but this sure is nice.

    • MetsGuy says:

Agreed. I would go light to start with unless Dunn can be had early. I would get Rivera now and give him about 10 games and then decide at the deadline if we need another hitter.

      • fongulalou says:

forget about rivera. hes no improvement over what we
have now. if omars gonna do something, heres hoping
its significant.b/t/w, right on w/ the anti-espn posts.
as someone whos seen them from the beginning,
they have become so bad its impossible to watch.
and this is w/o the likes of patrick, scott& “boomer”.

      • patrick says:

In ten games you will be able to predict the resurrection of a once prospect gone bust…do you do stocks too?

  30. uppertank says:

I prefer the ESPN guys over McCarver any day!
    Great game.

  31. dominicanboy08 says:

we may have 4 home grown players in 2009 (niese, pelfrey, smith and martinez) I like the young movement

  32. dave27 says:

Judging by his photo, we should all congratulate Jordan on completing summer school and being promoted to 9th grade!

  33. TenTonHammer says:

It’s not early. Over half the season has been played. It was early in May.

  34. dominicanboy08 says:

did you guys see the video of f-mart in yankee stadium? that kid will be something special. its on mets.com

The defining factor on whether he’ll be something special is whether he continues to add power as he fills out.

He hit a ground ball through the infield…

        • TenTonHammer says:

He’s talking about BP. He was bombing them off the face of the second deck according to Keith Law.

Fernando has plenty of power potential, and power doesn’t usually peak until 25 or so. Plus he’s got a frame to grow into.

I think Manuel is right by saying the break is coming at the right time. They need the rest because the second half is going to be huge. I think when the Mets get to Cincinnati Thursday, Manuel will call another one of those pre-batting practice, on-field meetings to get the team focused again. No reason why they shouldn’t take 3 of 4 from the Reds. The winning streak is nice, but as long as they keep winning series’, they’ll be in good shape.

    • bittergreen says:

Reds are a different team at home then they are on the road. The series at Cincinatti is going to be tough.

tonights game made me want to get to the stadium real bad. cant wait for that phils series

  37. The King of Queens says:

Has anyone else noticed Jon Miller wears the same yellow shirt every Sunday? Is it his only one or does he have a closet full of them. Also Joe Morgan may be one of the most arrogant men on television. The only guy worse then these two is Joe Buck that guy calls every sport like its golf.

  38. D-Day says:

great streak we are on. lots of credit to go around and i love that different guys are stepping up every night but one guy we have to give BIG props to is Dan Warthen. since hes taken over as pitching coach and gotten to know the staff the starters and bullpen are LIGHTS OUT!!!! yeah the pitchers are the ones who go out and perform but common, you have to admit this is a HUGE turnaround from when peterson was at the helm. lets keep it up after the break! LETS GO METS!!!!!

  39. PhillyMet says:

    A nice little rythym….
    BIg Pelf pounded he zone…
Carlos y Carlos are really focused…
    As Jose goes, we go…

I am so glad I don’t have to hear these cliches anyomore and I can enjoy baseball again! Is this fun or what?!

    • patrick says:

How long will it be for you to tire of…

      “That’s a very good question…”

“We need to find an answer…”

      “Well tonight see, he battled…”

not advocating the more was not good, but lets stop pretending these cliches are not born of insane over exposure and poor play.

If you are winning, Fans would tolerate the stupidity of Art Howe.

  40. lawgotham says:

I agree…I was tired of them yakking about Yankee Stadium, however i’m sur eit’s because they wanted to make sure you were watching the Home Run Derby and All-Star game

  41. That’s weird…my last comment didn’t post, and I didn’t even swear.

    • Holy Sht!!!!

ESPN is doing a feel good story on Hank Steinbrenner. I though my coffee was going to come back up…

There’s one moron on there that said he was right about Joba Chamberlin and about the DH in regards to the NL.

      What an effin joke.

BTW, I can’t stand ESPN’s Sunday & Monday Night Baseball Crew, Tim McCarver and Joe Buck

  42. bittergreen says:

Mets did what they were suppose to against bad teams. The end of July is going to see some big series vs. Philly, St. Louis and Florida. Should be lots of fun.

  43. irish_eagle says:

I hardly ever get a chance to watch the Mets. However, we get all the Sunday night games. Uggh. If I could match up WFAN (mlb.com audio) to the t.v. picture I’d mute Jon & Joe and go with Howie & Wayne. Cannot stand ESPN’s coverage.

Anyway, one thing I’ll point out is that back early in the year I posted a comment here on Pelfrey. I was only repeating what I’d heard on Baseball Tonight – might have been Olney. Anyway, I posted the comment which was that tall pitchers need more time to develop consistency. He was talking about Andrew Miller, but I posted here that Pelfrey might just need a bit more time.

I’m not genius, but whoever made that remark on Baseball Tonight sure seems like one to me now.

  44. MetLifer says:

Reyes should definately have made the All Star game. Because of the way the voting is set up, if you have a slow start you are definately screwed. Voting starts on May 2! The season just started! MLB is just encouraging the vote to be a popularity contest… and about what the player has done in the past because that’s what you’d be voting for on May 2! If you have an especially hot start, you’ll get a lot of votes early. I think the only fair way is to make voting start at the midway point… That’s like 3 weeks before the All Star game.

pelf couls easily be 12-4, and i could explain easily, k, look, against cincinatti, when he ditched the mouthpiece, went 6 innings allowed 2 runs, but got no run support, next, against the nationals, he went 7.2 innings with 1 hit and 1 run, and they lost 1-0, and pelf got the lost so so far 0-2, and then against the dodgers when he went 7 innings allowing 2 runs, ended up getting a no decision but the mets won it against jonathon broxton, but he couldve got the win, and remember in arizona when he went into the 9th and would have definitely won but billy wagner gave up a 3 run home run to mark reynolds with 2 outs and an 0-2 count. so take away 2 losses, 8-4, add 4 wins, and you end up with 12-4, all star caliber if i do say so myself.
