What happened to Jimmy Rollins’s power?  His doubles are in line with 2007, but he’s on a pace to collect half as many triples and one third the home runs.

The fastest Chipper Jones can get back to .400 is to rattle off twelve straight hits.

Sergio Mitre underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday and will likely miss most of 2009 as well as all of 2008.

Ronnie Belliard leads the Nationals with nine home runs.  They are one of three teams (Blue Jays, Giants) without a player in double digits in home runs.

    From the blog Thegoodphight:

For the most part, observers have perceived Jimmy Rollins’ 2008 season as mildly disappointing, and his numbers certainly are down compared to the MVP campaign he put up a year ago.

But better days might be coming: in 60 July plate appearances, Rollins has posted a .321/.400/.472 line, and his overall .274/.340/.438 line is a bit ahead of his career first-half averages: .269/.321/.421.

For his career, Rollins has hit .288/.346/.468 after the all-star break.

Maybe more to the point is that…Rollins has fared worse on balls in play this year even as he’s put up better walk, strikeout, and line drive rates. If a correction is forthcoming, the gains could be huge: the (Philly) Daily News noted… that the Phils are 21-7 this year in games when Rollins has scored, 67-34 last season, and 400-194 for his career.

Of course his slugging percentage will decline. He hit over 20 triples last year, even hitting just 10 triples is going to drop his slugging percentage. Last year he achieved career highs in homers and triples, odds were against him repeating that.

    • Ceetar says:

eh. Rollins had a career year last year. Return to form.

  3. 911nafstem says:

    steroids……

  4. Jon Karl says:

Rollins was hurt for about a month with an ankle sprain.

  5. chicagometfan says:

This is Roliins’ eigth full year in MLB. Prior to last year’s slugging percentage of 531 his highest total was 478. His lifetime slugging % is 441. His slugging % this year is 438. maybe (I hope so) this is where he will stay

  6. Dwright5kiddflushing says:

I’ve heard from non met fans that he was juiced….But who knows…He has missed time this year

    • Boscov says:

That certainly sounds like a reliable piece of information. I will now go and spread it around the world wide web promptly. I’ll start right here:

OH MY GOD!! ROLLINS JUICED LAST YEAR?!? WOW I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED IT!

  7. Bogar says:

Before steroids, every player had the same stats year after year after year…

  8. Dwright5kiddflushing says:

First off I know people who used to play professional baseball. Second, your sarcasm sucks. Third, I don’t think i’m changing the baseball world on metsblog. Its discussion.

    • Boscov says:

I know people who used to train Guatamalan spider monkeys. So who has the juice now?

  9. Nightlife says:

Still can’t believe a dude with an OPS+ of 101 won the MVP last year. Just pure ridiculousness.

    • Nightlife says:

Whoops, he had an OPS+ of 118 last year. Which, is still low, IMO, for an MVP.

      • Bogar says:

Well, his VORP was pretty good, and he’s a SS.

The runner-up, Holliday, was a LFer and not a good one, and his home stats boost him from an OK player to MVP level.

        • Dafatone80 says:

Playing in Philly sure helped Rollins, too. Added 50 points to his slugging, and he hit 6 more homers at home. Not Holliday splits, but Rollins’ home park was just as good a hitter’s park.

Statistically speaking, Wright had the best year last year.

  10. metsrbest says:

Maybe when his manager benched him for not hustling he started to sulk and go into a slump. ;-)

  11. PhillyMet says:

Rollins definitely has been sulking for awhile, and between him hurting his ankle and all of the acolades that Utley was getting this year, he didn’t handle it too well. I think after winning the MVP, he thought he would be more appreciated. No one signs more autographs than Rollins on that team.

IMO, it’s a combination of all that and him being worn down after the last few years. The guy hardly ever takes a day off.

  12. patrick says:

One thing is certain in regards to Utley, the contract they gave him and the snub they tossed Howards way is going to roost.

  13. StuckinGA says:

I know we were worried that Hampton was coming back after the break for the Braves, but he’s gone and “tweaked” his groin again. We’re all very lucky to dodge this bullet! Phew!
