News: Pedro To Miss Start
By Mike Nichols - Jul 17, 2008 4:28 pm

Speaking on WFAN a few moments ago, Jerry Manuel stated Pedro Martinez received an injection in his hip today and will miss his scheduled start on Sunday versus the Reds.

Manuel said Mike Pelfrey will start in Martinez’s place on Sunday.

    Too early for Jon Niese?

    • Omar did say in Spring Training that he wouldn’t hesitate to use him this year if he was needed. Put as much stock in that as you like, but my bet is that it won’t be necessary. Give him a cup of coffee in September.

    • Ametfan says:

A good time to perhaps slot El Dookey in and see what he’s got.

  2. so Johan, Maine, Perez for Philly?

  3. sheaheykid says:

    and so it begins…

  4. F***ing shocker.

  5. dominicanboy08 says:

    el duque time!

  6. bhill410 says:

did they happen to say what the injection was for? Groin or shoulder. Can you even get an injection on your groin?

  7. chicagometfan says:

Give Pedro all the rest he needs. Pitch Santana ,Maine and Perez against Philly followed by Pelf Friday against St Louis. We won’t need Pedro (or whoever) until Sat July 26TH

    • dominicanboy08 says:

agree perez should be pitching against the phllies

      • ravi3 says:

He has dominated them, but I’m just afraid of the Phills getting too many looks at Ollie…Though its been only 2-3 starts max, its compounded by seeing Santana earlier in the series who gives you basically the same look.

        • The same look? By virtue of what, the fact that they’re both lefties? They both have good stuff, and both are reputably very uncomfortable to face, but is that really a fair comparison? I’m asking genuinely, not in jest.

        • gameball says:

You’d rather break up the two lefty flyball pitchers, who have similar release points and movement (though Santana has better command, and of course that changeup).

They pitched back-to-back under Willie, as you know, and when Manuel took over he broke them up in the rotation first thing.

Pelfrey would be the perfect guy to put between those two, because he’s a righty and he has such a different style.

        • ravi3 says:

They both throw the same pitches, (FB, CH, SL), which each break similarly, given the left-handedness…Since they have the same arsenal, they both tend to attack hitters in a similar fashion (with Johan admittedly utilizing his CH more). Compare that to Maine who gets guys out with that rising fastball, or Pelfrey who uses the sinker.

In addition, Wagner also throws in a very similar manner as well.

    • Good call. Let’s get him healthy for the pennant chase.

  8. gipper82475 says:

    And it begins.

    • Danny1986 says:

dammit. I had “soreness” in my office pool. Also had ‘Personal Reasons” and “Rehab Start”. You know…..to hedge my bet.

      OK…what lucky b*stard had “injection”.

    • therealsince86 says:

Man I leave and everything changes except for one thing. I guess you can’t have everything.

By the way, did anyone miss me? ;)

      • Danny1986 says:

        where were you?

you missed all the fantasy baseball handjobs coming on here and trying to convince us that Adam Dunn is the answer to all our problems.

Really could have used you, my man.

        • therealsince86 says:

Sorry Danny I can’t agree with you there. He is not great but he would look a lot better in the OF than our current options.

        • Danny1986 says:

hey. How about you take another trip?

        • therealsince86 says:

LOL. If we start losing then maybe I am the jinx and will gladly step out again.

  9. hbean says:

    Go Big Pelf!

  10. sincekindergarten says:

Seeing that Pedro would be facing Edinson Volquez of the 12-3 record, I’d much rather have Big Pelf pitch against him.

  11. backinbusiness says:

In other news, Mike Hampton left his minor league rehab start Wednesday at Double-A with a groin injury.

It’s nearly astonishing that he isn’t on our current roster.

  12. patrick says:

I would not read too much into this yet, one it might be designed to move Santana up and squeeze in an extra start in the final 67 games, more so it keeps Pelfrey closer to his rythym.

  13. hockalo0gie says:

Wish I could go to that game…Volquez vs. Big Pelf. What a matchup that should be!

  14. CaseStreet says:

Welcome back to therealsince86 and gipper82475!

    • therealsince86 says:

Thanks, funny how I said that when I came back at the ASB we would be right back in it. Little did I know that I was telling the truth, LOL.

  15. GravediggerHebner says:

Well, they’re a half game out of first essentially without him so I don’t need to stay away from bridges or tall buildings just yet.

    • therealsince86 says:

At this point, honestly unless Pedro can be consistant I would just as soon to have Vargas out there. His numbers were actually pretty good.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

According to mets dot com the only Vargas on the Met 40 man roster is Jason. What happened to Claudio? I thought he was on the DL.

        • therealsince86 says:

No they optioned him and he went through waivers and back to AAA. I guess that clears his spot.
His ERA was high but his WHIP was 1.19.

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Aha, thank you. I think I may be confusing Vargas with Armas Jr., although there is no sign of him on mets dot com 40 man either. Maybe I should just order another drink.

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Does anyone else see this as good news?
He’s honestly been our least reliable pitcher all year…Kinda wouldnt mind seeing what El Duque’s got to give us anyway

      • therealsince86 says:

I would rather Elduque stay in the pen as the long man right now. I honestly think Pedro and Elduque could just share the 5 spot.

      • Tina says:

In the duque pool, I’ll take 3.1 innings.

  16. jstocks5 says:

hahaha the yankees agree to a deal with richie sexson… oh boy.. ny media is gonna have a field day with him

    • therealsince86 says:

Not a bad move as long as he NEVER sees a RHP.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Maybe Sexson and Pelfrey can help out the Knicks.

    • metsrbest says:

Actually the Mets could have used him. He rakes against lefties this year. .344 avg, .623 slg in 60 AB’s. Plus he could have spelled Delgado and given the Mets a power bat off the bench.

  17. stickguy says:

I’m too lazy to do the math, but if Pedro is going to miss his next start, wouldn’t his (theoretical) next one after that be pretty close to 15 days from his last one? Just thinking that they should just go ahead and put him on the DL to get another live body up. maybe when Church comes back? Or (yuck) Castillo.

    • therealsince86 says:

He should be put on the DL. I don’t think it would even cause another starter to pitch. If it did then bring up a AA guy for 1 start.

      • chicagometfan says:

Pedro’s last start was Sat July 12Th. If we go Santana,Maine and Perez against the Phils with pelf Friday against St Louis thent heoretically the Mets will need either Pedro or someone else to start sat July 26TH . If they DL Pedro he can’t start Sat the 26TH.
Since his year to date numbers are 44Innings pitched with a 6.25 era it seems to make sense to go ahead and DL him now and take our chance with whoever we can on Sat the 26Th. Gives Pedro plenty of time to rest. No need to rush him. we can bring up a body from now until the 26Th and then replace that body with the starting pitcher for the 26TH

        • therealsince86 says:

Agree, bring up Niese or Augilar for 1 start or even Elduque if he is ready to take Muniz spot.

      • kistics says:

I don’t think Mets and Pedro would want to deal with the headline of landing him on the DL.

    • Danny1986 says:

      Castillo is not coming back.

I’m personnally making sure of this.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

According to FOX news the Castillo threat alert is changing from yellow to orange (and blue).

      • stickguy says:

Thank you. I personally appreciate it more than you will ever know!

Honestly, has there been a player recently that was missed so little when he went on the DL? The true sign of a worthless roster spot: when you go away, the team gets better!

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Hey, it worked for the manager too!

        • therealsince86 says:

Yeh, it’s funny. I guess we won’t know until Castillo comes back which one was actually responsible for the problem.
The Mets are bound to cool off and you know it will be when Castillo comes back. That will really fuel the flames.

        • Danny1986 says:

Our dismal record with Castillo playing is not a coincidence, IMO. The top of the order will immediatly transform from the currently dynamic 1st-to-3rd philosophy to a station-to-station style.

In fact, this ‘Castillo Effect’ could likely be traced as far back as last year.

  18. MizzIKE says:

Did he say Pedro was gonna be skipped in the rotation or moved back to tuesday?

    • ucmetsfan says:

dammit im going to game sunday i was going to wear pedro jersey now i need to find something else

      • DontShakeAlousHand says:

I think they still let you in if your not wearing the starting pitcher’s jersey, so you should be fine.

  19. lonman1129 says:

DL Pedro now retroactive to last Sunday. Bring up a minor leaguer like Figs or Collazo and when they need a 5th starter on July 26 v. STL promote the Duke. You could go 4 starters for that week and then only need 3 v. Stros. They should totally baby Pedro and keep him on ice until mid August when they will really need him.

    • DK says:

I would love to see figgy get another shot…

    • ExileInLA says:

Lonman — look at the “This Week’s Rotation” post from yesterday, and my comment from yesterday morning:

I’ve got a different approach. Castillo is eligible to come off the DL on Friday, 7/18. The Mets have off days 7/21 and 7/31, and on 8/4, so the #5 spot only pitches 1x in the next 3 weeks. Then, they have 23 straight days w/o an off day.

I would do the following moves:

      1) Pedro Martinez to the DL, retroactive to July 13. Call up a bat – anyone; I don’t care who.
      2) Activate Castillo 7/18 (we play short tonite). Send down Robinson Cancel or the “Pedro replacement”.
      3) Pitch Santana-Maine-Perez-Pelfrey vs Cinci, and then with the off day 7/21, start them in that order vs PHL (2 lefties) & STL.
      4) On 7/22, activate Church, replacing Nick Evans, who won’t get any real time once Church is back.
      5) On 7/26, activate Armas or Vargas for the day to make the start, replacing the other spare bat (Cancel/the Pedro replacement).
      6) On 7/27, send down a pitcher (either Muniz or the spot starter) for another bat.
      7) On 8/5, activate Pedro to start, giving everyone else in the rotation an extra day’s rest.

Since Duque is starting today for B-Mets, his next start would be Tuesday 7/22 and then Sunday 7/27 — he’s not on sequence for when he’s needed.

  20. metsrbest says:

    Pedro Alou

  21. therealsince86 says:

Well looks like there will be Manny rumors at the end of the season. That’s never happen before.

  22. GravediggerHebner says:

Tonight’s lineup is at the Post blog. I tried to cut and paste it here but it went “poof.”

    • therealsince86 says:

      It’s our expected lineup.
Reyes, Chavez, Wright, Beltran, Easley, Delgado, Tatis, Schnieder.
Man Church needs to be back and healthy soon.

  23. Hubie says:

No shocker with Pedro. Rather see Vargas than Figgy.

  24. Hubie says:

For all you guys ripping on Castillo, remeber you were also ripping on Delgado a month ago. Don’t be so bleeping fair weather. Castillo is still a good player but he has obviously been playing hurt. We will need him at some point this year. Trust me. Easley will not stay this hot or healthy.

    • therealsince86 says:

I competely agree, as most know I would. He is an average player. However, assuming we don’t get a RF then bringing Castillo back gives protection if Easley or Tatis cool off. Easley can play RF when Castillo starts at 2B. I would also assume that Manuel will most likely only play him 3 games a week anyway.

      • Hubie says:

Agree. No sense playing Castillo every day. A platoon with him and Easley with Easley playing some 1B or the OF makes good sense.

    • Danny1986 says:

yes…b/c the playing styles of Delgado and Castillo along with the expectations we have of them are identical. Good comparison.

And if you are sold on Delgado after this small sample size, so be it. It’s great to see him in the midst of a transformation. But how about we see a bit more sustainablilty before declaring him cured?

      • Hubie says:

Easy danny boy. Did I declare him declare “cured”? All I said is the fair weather fans have stopped their criticism, now that he has had a hot streak.

Not a huge Castillo fan, but if healthy he is a serviceable 2nd baseman. He has proven that for 10 years. Unfortunately, our GM decided to sign a broken down player for 4 years. Hopefully, he can get his healthy, because we will need him at some point

Lastly, Delgado and Castillo are going to be on this roster for the remainder of the season. Love them or hate mind as well support them and not be so critical and cease the childish criticism.

        • Danny1986 says:

I’m really not seeing how we are going to ‘need’ Castillo. This team has certainly proven one thing this season, and that would be that they don’t need this guy.

Easily is a better hitter than Castillo. And whatever highly subjective increase in defense we get from Castillo is marginal at best, and not impactful to the comparison. Reyes is a better fielder. I would be happy with an Easily/Reyes Platoon for the remainder of the season.

The pro-Castillo argument is so incredibly weak. For all those who want to point to his above average obp (which is IDENTICAL to his SLG…that’s horrible) and his 10 years of experience…i have another stat for you….take a look at the most important statisitic, which would be the winning percentage of this team w/o him. And It is no freak coincidence.

I’m sorry, but when it comes to Castillo not playing, the argument is simply this: ‘addition by subtraction’.

        • Hubie says:

Winning % with Castillo in the line-up is such a weak argument. Like that has anything to do with Ollie and Pelf pitching lights out the last month. Gimme a break.

DO you really think Easley will keep up his current pace He is 38 and already nursing a sore quad. Trust me Castillo will be needed before the year is over.

  25. JoseReyesForPresident says:

talking about old ,yankees just signed richie sexson, just when i though i couldnt laugh harder..

    • therealsince86 says:

That’s actually a good move for them. He hits LHP well enough and he is free (almost).

  26. BaysideBillyD says:

Depending on how Pedro’s bullpen session goes over the weekend, he will start on Tuesday at home against the phillies. If not, Santana will get the nod that night.

  27. DontShakeAlousHand says:

Santana hasn’t been a dissapointment by any means, but can I get an ace-like game where its 2 hits no runs 10 ks tonight. The reds swing at everything ,10 ks isnt asking for much, dunn will give you 5 himself. Sure would like that to kick of the 2nd half of the season.

    • therealsince86 says:

It would be nice to see a completely dominant performance from Santana.

    • mex84 says:

Those two hits will probably be two solo homers in that sandbox. I see Dunn going deep with 3k’s. Lets go Mets!

  28. BaysideBillyD says:

I didn’t get that either, considering that Johan would be pitching on regular rest by going Tuesday.
And yes, I do see Santana going out tonight and giving us a Johan-esque performance.

  29. 911nafstem says:

Pedro is done for this season, and to the people who I got crap from when I said that this injury was worse than what the Mets were letting on, wake up, this is how the Mets do things, they lie about injuries, they act all coy, and then the truth slowly seeps out.

  30. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

pedro is not done, he will be back in time for his next start without a doubt in my mind, forget about niese, i mean he looks solid, but he is nothing more than a left handed brian bannister, k, hes not cy young, if that is what you are expecting, anyway, just let el duque go out there, i mean when he is out there, he pitched well

  31. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

ha ha comma battle. it could be, but i dont know. I never really notice that i write commas, it just sounds weird without one.
