  1. Good, not great, move for the Phils…Blanton is an innings eater who has a chance to get back on track in the NL…good back end of the rotation guy..

  2. acraane says:

I spit on Joe Blanton! *spits*

  3. Nightlife says:

Not really a move that puts any fear in me. The Philies definitely needed another starter and I guess acquiring even a very average pitcher such as Blanton helps, but I don’t see this making them favorites in the division at all.

Though, Blanton has shut us down in his 2 career starts to a tune of 1-0, 8 hits and 0 runs. His career ERA is one run higher away from home and is 7-5 with a 4.09 ERA in interleague play.

    • It’s all about the innings….230 for Blanton last year…he can help a bullpen a ton.

That said–no fear from me–but he does help them potentially.

      • The King of Queens says:

the bullpen has 40% of thier wins might be a good thing to keep them out of the game.

  4. Knuckler says:

This move is not enough for them. They needed another big gun to pitch after Hamels and Blanton ain’t it. This move doesn’t scare me one bit.

  5. Desperad07 says:

Dumb move, especially if they gave up Carlos Carrasco for him (still unknown). A hot shot young pitcher for a guy with 12 losses? Is Duquette running the show over there? Either way, this does nothing for the Phils but put a body in the rotation.

    • Billy Beane is the master….he gets more young studs for crap than anyone in history.

    • John The Mets Fan says:

A dumb move? LOL….I guess thats why we blog and THEY are general managers.

How is this a dumb move? The Phillies needed a starter desperately and they went out and got one, WITHOUT trading the prize of their farm system, Carlos Corrasco.

This move benefits both clubs. Billy Beane knows what he’s doing and Gillick needs to re-load for his last campaign as GM. Please think before you post….

  6. Adrian Cardenas, pitcher Josh Outman and outfielder Matthew Spencer for Joe Blanton

    • dykstraw II says:

      these guys worth anything?

i don’t think that much of blanton but this move makes the phils much better.

  7. The Slider says:

This deal scares me a little only because a new pitcher to the NL always has the advantage until he’s been around the league once or twice – which means that he COULD help the Phillies immensely for the rest of this year.

But I hope you guys are right.

  8. Cardenas is a nice young player in high A….very good speed.

  9. Remember–Joe Blanton in that Philly bandbox is a recipe for disaster.

  10. cousinrk says:

Much better? I don’t think so. He’s an innings eating average pitcher. Remember he’s going to a major league hitters park, so that 4-5 ERA will only go up. And even better this probably means the Phils aren’t getting AJ Burnett, who despite his injury problems and history has electric stuff and if he got it together would worry me. Blanton is who he is. He’s a better version of Adam Eaton. Nothing to worry about

  11. zbelair says:

baseball america has Cardenas as their best prospect and has him overall right after F-Mart so legit player, but at 2b he was only really there as trade material. Also has Outman as their fourth best prospect.

  12. KFS says:

Trachsel was an inning-eater too. There’s a reason Beane traded this guy when he’s still 2 years away from FA: he’s not that good.

  13. whenslydale says:

    blanton…can you say Walt Terrell?

never underestimate the value of an innings-eater.

you can hate on traschel all you want but he threw some gems for us when no-one was expecting them. If our bullpen wasn’t so spent
at the end of last year we were a few outs away from the post season.

I still think we should have signed El Duques fat brother
years ago for just this reason.

  14. dave27 says:

Panic move by Philly. A mediocre pitcher in Oakland’s spacious yard is a disaster waiting to happen in Philly.

  15. ou812jay8 says:

You have to respect Billy Beane. Even though his team is contending, he has a long term plan and is sticking to it. So many times teams overperform and the front office strays away from their original plan and it blows up in their face(hello, 2004 Mets). Blanton will help the Phillies just for the fact that it gets Adam Eaton out of the rotation when Myers comes back. Eaton may be good against the Mets, but he sucks against everyone else. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Beane spins Murton to the Mets for a Nick Evans/Mike Carp prospect and a lesser prospect. Might be a good option for the Mets. Murton wouldn’t cost nearly as much as Ibanez, Dunn, Nady, etc.

  16. teufelshuffle86 says:

    TATIS!!!!!!!!!

  17. Hubie says:

To all you know it alls who are claiming this is a bad move, you don’t have a clue. Great trade for the Phils. Got a big time innings eater and a sinker baller for their park. Fits in nicely and gets Eaton out of their rotation. Add to that Blanton has thrown 2 gems agst us in ‘04 and ‘07

  18. AngryFan says:

Can Matt unearth all the comments left here in praise of Blanton when the rumor mill had the Mets going for him?

    Because there were MANY.

Folks, this is a nice move for the Phils. They get a guy who is an upgrade over what that had. Myers goes to the pen if necessary and helps there.

Is it enough for them? Dunno, but don’t sit here and pi$$ on my leg and tell me it’s raining. This is a plus move for them

    • the Straw says:

UM blanton looked like a much better pitcher when the mets were showing interest….but 5-12 later, and he isnt such a hot commodity!

      • AngryFan says:

Point taken, but just because he was having a lousy season doesn’t mean that he’s untalented and won’t help the Phils.

        • the Straw says:

he may help them…but i dont think it makes them a whole lot better than they were before they had him.

He is not CC or Bedard or even Burnett….and thats the kind of pitcher they really need.

        • AngryFan says:

Fair. I was worried they’d get Burnett, who could be just sick sometimes

  19. the Straw says:

Um blanton really may not be that much of an upgrade over eaton. eaton stinks, but blanton will probably stink pitching in Citizens Bank.

Unless Myers can totally turn his season around, they still dont have a solid #2 or #3 pitcher…..

And if you think this blanton really makes a difference, would any of you right now replace anyone in our starting rotation for blanton for the rest of the year???

    I SAY NO WAY!

    • AngryFan says:

LOL I can probably find loads of comments of a similar nature earlier in the year about how Lidge was gonna be a disaster in that ballpark, etc etc

    • AngryFan says:

PS- Would Blanton be an upgrade for US? Probably not, but the point is that he’s possibly an upgrade for PHILLY

      • the Straw says:

        an upgrade- yes
make them NL East favorites – no

      • ou812jay8 says:

I would take Blanton over Pedro. I hate to say it, but at least you know Blanton is going to go out there every fifth day and give you some innings. Unfortunately, that is more than what Pedro has given us in the last two years.

        • 2NYCE says:

          Blanton over Pedro??

          Never!

You will see…Martinez is going to surprise alot of folks in the 2nd half

    • mets hater says:

look at the park dimensions of both parks
we got an inning eater and he will shut the mets DOWN!!!
mets r on a roll but
with every hill there is a valley the bigger the hill the bigger the valley

  20. Ceetar says:

Was this post written in Central Time or what? 5:45? It wasn’t up when I check the lineup just before first pitch..

  21. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

anyone who is worried take a deep breathe, compare the dimensions of CBP vs Oakland Collisium, then keep in mind that Blanton is a fly ball pitcher.

  22. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

ou812jay8, not to sound rude, but…HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU TAKE A THREE TIME CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER OVER A 4 STARTER, ha ha lol, anyway, joe blanton is somewhat of a serviceable starter, he went 14-10 in 230 innings, allowed 240 hits, and had an era of 3.97 i think, the year before 16-10 in about 200 innings, and a 4.89 ERA, and he is a sinkerball pitcher, it seems like the perfect commodity for the phils for the plain fact that citizens bank ballpark is a small park, thus you need a groundball pitcher, who or is it whom joe blanton is, and to win he needs run support, and the philleis are a good offensive team, so yeah, it is a good pickup, i am just that AJ burnett is not back in the rotation, because if he is healthy, he can blow you away with his stuff (like against the yankees), anyway, i think pedro will turn heads in the second half, i mean he is the one that got this era of great winning baseball started when they signed him in december of 04, and i still think he can be that pitcher, i mean he didnt throw hard in 05 either, he just had his cutter working, something that he has not yet grasped, but i really thought that before he got injured, pedro was really turning the corner, as the 4 shutout innings, so yeah, if you ask for a prediction, is say that he will 9-5 with a 2.97 era and strike out say 103 in ther est of the second half.
