postGame: Mets 10 Reds 8
By Regis Courtemanche - Jul 17, 2008 10:54 pm

The Mets (52-44) beat the Reds (46-51) by the score of 10 to 8 tonight in Cincinnati, increasing their winning streak to ten consecutive games.

For the first time since April 19th, the Mets are in first place, even if they do share it with the Phillies.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

  • It was smooth sailing for both starting pitchers until the fourth inning when Carlos Delgado hit a two-run homer literally out of Great American Ballpark. In the bottom of the frame, Adam Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion hit back-to-back solo shots off of Johan Santana who apparently hasn’t been told that the second half has begun. Santana allowed a total of five runs in the fourth, his final inning.
  • In the fifth, David Wright had a two out, two-run base hit to make it five to four.
  • Fernando “Superman” Tatis strikes again, belting a two-run homer to give the Mets a one run lead in the sixth. In his last twelve games, Tatis is batting .432 with four home runs.
  • The Reds pitching coach’s name is Dick Pole.
  • With two outs and none on in the seventh, Aaron Heilman, one of six relievers used tonight, loaded the bases, and Scott Schoeneweis cleared them by allowing a double to Jose Valentin’s brother, Javier.
  • With one out in the ninth, David Wright hit a two-run homer off of Francisco Cordero to tie the game up at eight. Wow.
  • Carlos Delgado, who had three RBI on the night, drove in Carlos Beltran to give the Mets the lead for good. Billy Wagner then pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to earn the save.

The team showed a lot of fight tonight, and is continuing to find ways to win.

Game two of the series begins tomorrow at 7:10 pm with John Maine (8-6) facing off against Bronson Arroyo (7-7).

  1. 1st place feels great.

    • jimyager says:

WOW!! What a win, the MAGIC IS BACK!!! For those of you old enough to remember that was the slogan for the 1980 METS that featured All-Star Lee “Mazz” and Joel Youngblood. Great win for the Mets, I think we are onto something here. What is the deal with Santana? He is NOT living up to his hype, not even close. He gives up like one HR every game or something like that. 13 HRs is 15 games? He needs a chill pill or something. I have more faith in Wags during the ninth in a one run game that I do in Santana. You would think moving to the NL with the weak bottom of the order he would be blowing these teams away. So far he has been a major let down. I hope all the talk about him being a second half pitcher is true. The team really did a great job of picking each other up and Sanatana can add yet another ND to his record. LETS GO METS !!!

      • diehard says:

I agree santana has not been that good BUT TO SAY YOU HAVE MORE CONFIDENCE IN WAGNER?!?!?!?!? THATS JUST BEING CRAZY!! THERES NO ONE IN BASEBALL I HAVE LESS CONFIDENCE IN THAN WAGNER!!!! BRING BACK ARMANDO!!!!!

    • QnsNative718 says:

Dick Pole.. haha.. I thought I was the only one who did a double take when I heard that name last night.. Ned Yost is no longer my fav. coach/manager name.. Now its Dick Pole. Oh yea.. 10 in a row..

  2. After all the tough luck santana’s been pitching into nice to see the offense bail him out

  3. Skyhigh980 says:

fastest postgame ever, yea first place feels nice, great comeback by the mets

  4. mrose says:

btw..its not Oli vs Josh Fogg..
Its John Maine vs Bronson Arroyo

    LETS GO METS!

  5. Jaded1983 says:

does anyone else feel like some of that 2006 magic is back?

  6. ravin108 says:

Whatever Dick Pole is telling his pitchers, I like it

  7. MetsFan4Decades says:

    First place. No looking back.
Even with the pitching not good, the offense came back large to putt that one of the hat.

    Let’s Go Mets !! 10 in a row. 11, here we come!!

  8. teufelshuffle86 says:

Like I said earlier, no way this team wins a game like this a month ago. Love the fight this team shows. They never give up anymore. This is the kind of team I became a fan of almost 30 years ago.

    LETS GO METS!!!!!!

    • patrick says:

You mean like when Wagner gagged Pelfrey’s gem vs. the Diamondbacks and the Mets lost in the 13th on Beltran’s walk off….oh wait

  9. el_giacomo says:

Amazin’ come-from-behind victory and one of the most exciting games of the season!

    Let’s Go Mets!!!

  10. JessMets says:

    Woooohoooo…. Feels like 2006 again

  11. khmustache says:

this feels like a different team. it hasn’t been like this in 2 years. the clutch guys are clutch, they pick each other up, and they’re showing a lot of heart…life is good

    • KHERUB VON KHERUB says:

let me finish this post for you…..”life is good….(WITH OUT WILLIE RANDOLPH!!!)”….

      K ~

  12. adam900 says:

This is arguably the best win we’ve had all year. Santana pitched TERRIBLE, we come back, bullpen blows a late lead, and we STILL rally to get 4 in the ninth.

  13. I love the way the offense bailed out santana after giving him no support for 2 months. Its great to have 5 good/great pitchers. We got Maine, olli and pelfrey coming up

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Great point. As little run support as Johan has received recently, the team owed him one of these games.

  14. GravediggerHebner says:

The offense owed Santana big time, payback is a mother for the Reds.

  15. Mookie1986 says:

DW with TWO clutch hits in one game?!?

    Somebody pinch me!

What a win! What a win!

They keep it up even after the All-Star break. Just spectacular.

So disappointed in Santana’s start, and the pen fared no better. But just like in the previous 9 games, when one segment of the team can’t get it done, another comes in and picks up the slack.

    Now that is solid.

  16. alphamet says:

    Big win for the boys…
I gave up on the game earlier in the 8th, feeling they had a loss
coming their way( which they do)…
    Lets go Metropolitans!

  17. mr.gee21 says:

“The Reds pitching coach’s name is Dick Pole.”

    Awesome.

  18. teufelshuffle86 says:

Was this the first 3-run defecit the Mets have come from behind to win?

  19. domosnacks5 says:

Whereas last month, every loss was seemingly deemed the “worst of the year”, now every win is seemingly becoming the best win of the year. I love the complete 180 this team has made. I’m glad I’ve honestly stuck with them through it all.

    LET’S GO METS!

    • ridethesnake says:

Oh, every Met fan in America has stuck with them — not one of them ever doubted this team, and every one of them was at Game 6.

  20. sellitman says:

I hope Santana can pick it up next time out. Have we really won 10 in a row? Pinch me.

    No …….not you Dick Pole.

  21. mr.gee21 says:

The pitching carried this team so far, and the hitting picked up the slack tonight. Amazing.

  22. Mookie1986 says:

The Reds pitching coach’s name is Dick Pole

Way to sneak that smack in the middle of the wrap up.

    F-ing brilliant!

  23. MetsFanInVegas says:

Love the win. Love the feeling I’m getting from this team. Yes it’s starting to feel like ‘06 again … but … as much as I wanna believe Tatis is for real and his production is here to stay it’s hard for me to do that. I wish we could keep him out there but with Church iffy, not knowing how long Tatis and Chavez can keep up this pace, I think we need to get an outfielder.

  24. TobeRinkler says:

“The Reds pitching coach’s name is Dick Pole.”

Did he ever work with Putz?

  26. alphamet says:

This ain’t like the 2006 Mets.
This year they’ve been tested. They’re showing resilience.
    2006 was a cakewalk.

    • MetsFanInVegas says:

True. I like this team even more than the 06 version.

    • patrick says:

oh relax their pal, that team was tested they lost 3/5’s of their starting rotation and their LF, their best reliever and were to be pasted in the first round of the playoffs by the Dodgers as I recall.

They won the division, don’t be silly just yet.

  27. kendychavez says:

not nearly enough dick pole jokes on metsblog. i want that note in the postgame every time we play the reds.

  28. metsfan807 says:

“The Reds pitching coach’s name is Dick Pole.”

HAHAHAHAHA when keith said there’s reds pitching coach dick pole i said o boy his parents hated him

Good win boys keep it up

  29. teufelshuffle86 says:

Haven’t the Mets made up about as many games in about the same amount of time as the Phils did to us last year?

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I believe the Phils lost their lead more quickly, but they couldn’t wait til September to do it. They don’t know drama.

    • stickguy says:

probably. That, IMO, was the point often overlooked in the hysteria about the “collapse”.

All year, teams have hot and cold streaks. It just happened that the Mets cold streak coincided with a Phils hot streak, and it was the last 2 weeks of the season. So obviously, much more noticable.

The same thing happens now, and it is just part of the ebb and flow of the season.

      • bittergreen says:

“The Collapse” wasn’t “hysteria”. Losing 6 of the last 7 to teams which were all sub .500, when the the post-season on the line, is more than just your run-of-the-mill cold streak. There was nothing worse than the back-to-back loses to Nats when they were up big, and then getting absolute shut-down the next night by Joell Pineiro.

The Mets seemed to be in pretty good position after taking 3 of 4 in Florida over the weekend series, and then they came home and did that.

    • therealsince86 says:

While it seems like it, we were 7.5 games out on June 10th that’s 30 some games.

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

I thought we were about the same distance out a week later. I could be wrong. Most of the made up ground came during this streak.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

True, but over the course of the Phillies last 9 games, they have lost a 5.5 game lead. Isn’t that worse than a certain team losing a 7 game lead over 17 games? Percentage wise it certainly is.

  30. SantanaCYYOung says:

I had a feeling about tonight, it kind of went away when jose struck out, but argenis, wright, beltran, easley, delgado (who is amazing lately) and then tatis

    • khmustache says:

i gotta believe that delgado was hurt or he really really really hated willie…the guy has been incredible lately

      • metsin080910 says:

Remember, he had that surgery on his hands. Someone pointed out that his hands are getting stronger after the surgeries.

        Delgado in 09!

        • nomoredelgado says:

i will be changing my handle at some point this weekend. crow has never tasted better.

    • bittergreen says:

Well Delgado has certainly picked up his performances, nobody has been better than Tatis.

  31. beltran the warrior says:

    phillies get blanton.

figures. overrated pitcher for an overrated team.

can’t wait to see the mets tag him up in the next series because you knooooow cholly is going to make sure he pitches in one of those games.

    • geoff hayton says:

      bad record, great stuff.

I bet Rick Peterson could fix him in 10 minutes.

In all seriousness though, dude’s dangerous.

      • bkfitz says:

“great stuff” is not how Joe Blanton would be described by scouts. He’s a younger version of Livan Hernandez.

      • KinersKornerman says:

“In all seriousness though, dude’s dangerous.”

        Dangerous?
Only if you are a jelly doughnut.

    • sincekindergarten says:

According to MLB’s website, Blanton has pitched 15 innings against the Mets, and never given up a run. Then again, he’s never faced the Mets in a bandbox.

  32. stickguy says:

tomorrow would be a good day for Maine to get his groove back on, and pitch a nice solid 7 innings. Make it a laugher to take the pressure off!

Can’t afford a lot of 4 inning starts if you want to keep the pen alive. Certainly not by Santana!

  33. Longest streak since 1991. Next stop 1986!

  34. FlyingDadBomb34 says:

“The Reds pitching coach’s name is Dick Pole.”

    XD times ten

But seriously, now that you mentioned it, will the baseball world someday be embraced by a player with the name Dick Nutt? I can see it now…

    • therealsince86 says:

How about the classic Richard Head. Why on earth if your last name was Head would you name your kid Richard?

  35. SantanaCYYOung says:

BTW: Did you guys notice the excellent double switch with chavez and muniz???? remember willie abd his double switches?

    • TheIcon says:

Ok, well if that would have blown up in Manuel’s face with an error by Tatis in right, everyone would have been crying about a bad move.

  36. Salz says:

Yeah there’s def a different feel when I watch the games now. Every time we were down, I just felt like we’d comeback. I don’t know if I have more trust in the teams resiliency, or just the offense… but I feel a lot more confident now.

  37. SantanaCYYOung says:

santana was to throw a bullpen on monday and couldn’t cause of the billy joel concert preps at shea…i live a mile from shea, i’d have played catch with him!

    • khmustache says:

lol…true…i know about 50 guys in rego park who would quit their job to catch him

  38. SantanaCYYOung says:

one month anniversary of the willie firing? old news but interesting where this team is now…AMAZING!

  39. metmania says:

I love the fight this team has developed

  40. mets484 says:

“Pole’s name is often treated in humorous fashion by sports columnists and pundits because both his first and last names could be considered euphemisms for ‘Penis’”
    - Wikipedia

    • mr.gee21 says:

Oooooh, I was wondering why everyone was laughing. :)

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

Leave it to wikipedia to have to explain to us why Dick Pole is funny.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

there are two gentleman who perform in a different sport who have similarly hilarious names, but when I tried to post those names here the post was removed. Ah well, I guess only 50 or so “Dick Pole” related comments are allowed.

    • khmustache says:

      i totally get it now!!!!

  41. therealsince86 says:

For everyone getting up in arms about Blanton, guys he has given up 12 HR already. Imagine how many he is going to give up in Philly. And to add to that he puts so many men on that the HR’s hurt a lot more than Santana’s.
    Bring him on.

    • Ryn05 says:

You’re an idiot if you’re up in arms over Blanton.

      Blanton ERA+ 77
      Eaton ERA+ 77
      Myers ERA+ 76

Phillies also shipped off their #1 prospect for a below average innings eater (a fatter Eaton).

    • KinersKornerman says:

TRS86, welcome back. Some of us missed your erudite commentary. Let’s not get too cocky (subliminal Dick Pole joke) about Blanton.

Recall he went 8 shutout innings on the Mets last June 23. We won 1-0 in the 9th inning, but still. He can be effective.

      • therealsince86 says:

So CAN anyone. I just don’t think that is what pushes them over the edge.
By the way, thanks it feels good to be back. Especially considering how things were going when I left.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

I’m not going to get too cocky because I expected Lidge to implode in CBP and unfortunately it hasn’t happened (yet), but I’ll be watching closely and hoping for Blanton to crack.

        • therealsince86 says:

Lidge just needed anyone to show confidence in him. He was pretty damn good before the HR.

        • patrick says:

Lidge is not going to run the table in 2008 and not allow a homerun.

  42. Tina says:

This is how 2006 felt, after some hard years. You don’t have to turn it off when they lose a lead, thinking there’s not a hope in hell of them coming back. They won’t win every game, but they’ve got a chance at every game.

  43. RockfordMetsFan says:

Wow. What a game. The Mets are too legit to quit, despite the implosions by Santana, Heilman and Schoeneweis. You gotta believe.

    • KinersKornerman says:

Best use of MCHammer in a Metsblog post ever.

      • RockfordMetsFan says:

I’m actually more of a 60’s and 70’s music fan, but I couldn’t think of any Disco era phrases to use.

Just think, the Mets still have a chance to go 118-44. They only to win 66 more games in a row.

        • KinersKornerman says:

          How about these:

That’s the Way I like It, Mets are Staying Alive in the pennant race and I Imagine they are Gonna Fly Now. It’s Too Late for the Phils. We will break their Heart of Glass and there will be no Escape (the Pina Colada Song). Can you hear the drums, Fernando Tatis?

Oh, and You Ain’t Seen Nothing yet.

  44. 2NYCE says:

After the 8th inning I left my girlfriend’s house and didnt bother putting on WFAN for an update in the car. I came home and checked this site and saw the score……..

…….I think I woke up the neighbors lol.

    Ya Gotta Believe!!!!

    :)

  45. D. WRIGHT is once agian king

  46. Tatis is this years Jose Valintine

    • therealsince86 says:

Possible, I just don’t see him playing lights out defense too.

    • Mookie1986 says:

Not yet. If he continues to play well over his head for the entire season the way Jose did in ‘06, then yes, he is this years’ version.

  47. teufelshuffle86 says:

Somebody needs to update the standings on the left hand side of the page. It’s about 4 games behind!

  48. Joe Blanton couldn’t crack our rotation if he took Barry Bonds size dosage of steroids

  49. Paperboy says:

Does anyone else totally believe this streak could go 13…or even 15 games? I do!

I feel confident about John Maine vs. Bronson Arroyo.

I feel confident about Ollie vs. Fogg

I feel confident about Big Pelf vs. Volquez

I feel like Damion Easley always gives ya a quality AB.
I feel like David Wright comes through more often than he doesn’t.
I feel like Delgado could hit one out at any given moment.
I feel like Beltran will catch anything within his ZIP code.

And even after tonight’s…unpleasantness…I still feel confident about Johan vs. anyone in the league.

    REFUSE TO LOSE! YEE HA!

  50. NY Cuban says:

It took a while, but its good to be back in first. Lets keep this ball rolling!

What a difference a manager makes…LETS GO METS!!!

  51. Eggman says:

If my name were Richard Pole I certainly wouldn’t go by Dick. If my name were Richard anything I’d be “Richie” for that matter.

Remember when the Twins had Randy Bush and Rusty Kuntz on their roster?

  52. gomets6091 says:

Feels like 2006 all over again. By the way, the Phillies have blown a 5.5 game lead in 13 days, 3 of which were the all-star break. But right, ours was the “worst collapse ever.” F that.

I was at a bar tonight getting hammered and they kept flashing the score across the ticker: when I saw the Reds took the lead in the 7th, I cursed under my breath, and then said “you know what, they can still win this.” A month ago, I would have been convinced it was over, but tonight I had some faith, and sure enough, by the time I stepped off the Metro, the Mets had come back and won it. I believe in this team, and it feels pretty good (or maybe it’s the alcohol talking, who knows…)

  53. D-Day says:

with pedro’s start pushed back does anyone know who the starters will be for the philly series?

  54. TheIcon says:

Let’s take a step back here. This site wants to be taken seriously and has banned user for inappropriate language, but one of its writers makes a lewd comment himself. Might seem harmless, but it goes against what Matt has said in the past. There was no need to make that comment. It has nothing to do with the game.

  55. EliPorter says:

this is too good to be true

    • ucmetsfan says:

i was there tonight. nice mets crowd. some lets go mets chants at the end in the 9th.
people threw peanuts at me i guess standing and clapping after every run for mets was obnoxious but it was great game.
btw the guys i was with said they never seen anything like delgados homerun out of stadium

    • FlyingDadBomb34 says:

Which part? Dick Pole or the winning streak?

  56. randytate says:

Doe Matt Cerrone stll work here? 4 days since his last entry.

    • Tina says:

You people are getting hilarious. I’m pretty sure he’s not dead. Howie was not on tonight. I expect the all-star break makes a good time for people who work the whole season to get away for a vacay.

  57. D-Day says:

this is the type of win we couldnt dream of in the first half. even going into the 9th i knew they could come back. BIG WIN!!!! david is clutch again. delgado got his swing back. and we are tied for FIRST!!!! its been said before but never more true than now. the rest of the season starts TODAY. were even with the sillies just like on day 1 of the season. now LETS GO METS!!!!!!

  58. Wright88 says:

oh wow..baseball tonight only talks about Santana’s poor pitching..and how Blanton is a great pickup for the Phils.

  59. G_Lunt says:

Long time reader, don’t post much…but I had to talk to someone after this awesome win.

Man this team looks good. The feel to them is that they are way better than the 2006 version. That was a team that had a great chemistry and mold to it but hadn’t been through the trenches with each other. They came out with a 10-2 record and dominated the entire way all the way until the NLCS. They came back the next year hungry, and played well most of the season, until things started to get slow and inconsistent, and Willie could not get them motivated. He had that annoying arrogance about him that wouldn’t admit when things were bad..i.e. “The champagne will be that much sweeter” …He was a joke coming back this season because no matter what they said to the media, the team did not believe in his ability to lead them.

Jerry Manuel has been such a breath of fresh air; being honest with the media, removing the no-facial hair policy, changing up practice times, having team meetings outside, doing drills…he has brought the team together and they feel like a family again. Yes, like in 2006, but this time the core of the team (Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Delgado, Wagner, etc.) have battle experience with each other… having gone from the dominant team in ‘06 to the ultimate embarrassment in Sept ‘07 …it has given them humility. They know how it feels to be at the top and know what its like to have it taken away.

I think that now that they are back in first they are going to take it by the throat and dominate the rest of the way. There is no way that the players, having been part of a streak like this, will let this season get away. They know they can be the best team in baseball if they continue to click. The starting pitching is solid, the bullpen is solid, the hitting is unstoppable right now.

    Let’s get 11 tomorrow.

    • therealsince86 says:

No wonder you don’t post very often. It takes a long time to write a novel.
But in all seriousness, I feel the same way. Lets see how the Phillies respond to this one.
Look at it this way, we forced them to go out and try and make a big trade.

      • G_Lunt says:

Blanton could be good for them, you never know..that trade irks me for some reason. But either way, these Mets are too good.

        • therealsince86 says:

Could be. I still just don’t think his HR problem is going to go away in Poprun Field.

        • G_Lunt says:

The thing is, even if he is good for them, the rest of their rotation not named Hamels is horrible. They are preying big time that Myers is above average.

      • FlyingDadBomb34 says:

What the hell are you talkin’ about? Writing a novel would’ve taken a shorter amount of time than to write that entire comment. I mean no offense, G_Lunt.

    • khmustache says:

thanks stephen king…seriously i agree completely…i haven’t been this excited about the team since that season. i hope it continues

    • Danny1986 says:

so you know, one of the guys who is busting your nads is notorious for doing just that, busting nads and acting as the all-knowing truth police on this site. He loves being argumentative, barely comes up with an original thought, and has never come up with something as analytical, poniant, and detailed as the ‘novel’ you just wrote.

It was a pleasure to read. Looking forward to reading more of your stuff.

I wonder if the Phillies and their fans are reeling from the greatest collapse in the history of the last 9 games?

    • therealsince86 says:

      Nope they got Blanton.

      • D-Day says:

they can have him and his over 4 ERA. eaton and blanton have almost the same ERA so not much of an upgrade

      • GravediggerHebner says:

If my fave team had lost a 5.5 game lead in the last 9 games it would take more than the acquisition of Joe “Pedestrian” Blanton and his career record of 47-46, ERA of 4.25 and WHIP of 1.33 to make me feel better about it.

        • D-Day says:

          AMEN! blanton=overrated!

        • GravediggerHebner says:

If there is anything that does worry me at all it’s that Phillie still has chips left, they can at least try to make another move if they want to.

        • Two-By-Four says:

If any of you had taken the time to watch Blanton pitch you would have seen that he is not Steve Trachsel out there. He has a lot more talent then Adam Eaton. He has the ability to be effective and keep them in games. He is a good pickup and could help them in what will probably be a close race.

  61. m00kie says:

I too about gave up heading into the 9th, thought it would be over quick .. but when wright stepped to the plate I had a feeling… and here we are! nice win.

  62. cousinrk says:

Everyone has left out the important question from tonight.

Why would Dick Pole’s parents name him Dick with a last name of Pole? And if his real name is Richard, why would he go by the nickname Dick, instead of just staying with Richard? That is what we need to discuss and find out.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Dare I say that it would take balls to shove a microphone into Dick’s face and ask him that question?

  63. playmaker3128 says:

Even if we had lost this game it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal. We would have still been only a game out. However to come back and win like we did today. As a previous poster said, a couple months ago this team would have been done when the reds took the 5-2 lead, but we fought back.

Baseball is really an amazing game. July 5th we were in philly, after losing a heartbreaker the night b4 with santana on the mound we gave up another lead. Down 4-3 in the 8th we were staring a 6.5 game deficit in the face, we came back and won. Now on July 18th were back in first. Amazing.

By the way, alot of credit to argenis reyes. great ab in that 9th inning. Right now if castillo was here he might be the 3rd best 2nd baseman on the team. As keith said during today’s broadcast, easily is the starter the rest of the way. if castillo wants his job back he’s gonna have to earn it.

  64. FlyingDadBomb34 says:

Does anybody see a potential YouTube hit coming real soon regarding Dick Pole?

LEAVE DICK POLE ALONE!!!! LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!!

    XD

  65. The King of Queens says:

Mets need to make a trade for Dunn the just flat out spanks the ball. He is on pace to hit 45 HR and seriously would his defense in LF be any worse then the elderly Moises Alou.

Also to jump on the Dick Pole joke band wagon maybe a little blue pill could have revived Dick Poles career.

    • khmustache says:

moises hasn’t played in a month and a half…also who do you want to trade for him? yeah the guy has a lot of hrs but he’s hitting 220 with 58 rbis, plus he’s a huge liability in the field. i think chavez and tatis have proven that they can play, and church should be back in a few weeks. why take a chance on another aging slugger with a bad glove?

      • The King of Queens says:

I don’t think we should give away the farm for Dunn but I have heard rumors the asking price is fairly low. If we could get him for a couple of midlevel prospects maybe one pitching prospect why not. The chances of getting Holliday are slim and it would take a ton of prospects to get it done. If the price is good for Bay or Nady I say go for it but if we can’t land one of them then Dunn might be our best bet.

  66. markzila says:

    dick pole…

  67. X-Man says:

Great win, Manuel is pushing all the right buttons and the players are playing more loose and with a sense of urgency we didn’t see with the previous “Leader”.

This line-up with Tastis and Chavez is averaging over 10+ hits per game and over 6+ runs per game…………………..and especially with………………….NO CASTILLO!

When and IF Church comes back (I really hope he does) this will only lengthen the line-up further from 1 through 7 and even down to the 8th spot on days Castro plays. Again, the party will be over when Luis comes back and you know it’s inevitable.

  68. FlyingDadBomb34 says:

Rumors are flying that the Reds have traded Dick Pole to Wawa for a pack of condoms and the latest edition of Maxim magazine.

    Anyone confirm this?

  69. X-Man says:

Just out of curiosity, is everyone on here something like 12 years old? Not trying to piss anyone off but I just scrolled up and there is something like 50 posts about Dick Pole! Yeah, I get it, it’s a funny name and all, but on a night that the NY Mets won their 10th straight game and move into a tie for first, I mean come on guys, we can do better than that on here can we? Gees.

    • Bobby V says:

after a big win, everyone’s in a good mood, looking to have a few laughs…and a name like Dick Pole is just a gift that keeps on giving for those who enjoy puns – im not 12 years old, but sometimes i wish i were again

      • X-Man says:

I hear you, god knows we haven’t had much to joke and laugh about until just recently. I guess I came on here to read some good commentary on tonight’s game and all I can find is cracks on Dick Pole, just a little disappointed I guess. But by all means, continue! LOL.

      • DavidDog says:

It is way too easy, but it’s too funny too:

“Dick Pole always had a quick release”

“That looked like a strike! Dick Pole really got squeezed here”

        etc.

Someone save this forum discussion, one of the best ever, we’ll get back to talking baseball tomorrow (well you guys will, I’ll be out of town for a few weeks)

    • KinersKornerman says:

Hey we’re giddy with excitement. Betcha if there was a loss, there wouldn’t be as many inches of jokes.

Seriously tho, Jerry Manuel is showing great in-game skills. The early double switch looked like baseball poetry. He put the right guys in the right situations. Show didn’t help, but that’s they way it goes.

What was really impressive was 6 hits in arow AFTER Jose strikes out in the 9th. Mets are clearly on a roll, so keep up the joy.

      • X-Man says:

The key to that ninth inning was A. Reyes getting on base in front of Wright for the 2-run home-run to tie it. I have a funny suspicion that if it were Castillo up in that situation, we wouldn’t be as “Giddy” as we are now.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Agreed. A-Rey has done very well in his role. Nice glove too, so far. There’s a lot of fear that Fernando Tasty, A-Rey and Endy are playing over their heads, but that’s what good teams have. Guys doing things above their averages. We know what Luis is, so when the hot guys get cold, Jerry Man will get back to him. Just not quite yet.

        • X-Man says:

I know, but unless Easley goes down due to an injury, I’d rather still see a ‘Cold” Easley in the line-up than “slap happy” Castillo anyday. And if castillo has to play to give Easley a “Blow” once in a while, he definitely does not belong anywhere near the 2-hole.

        • KinersKornerman says:

X, if we learned anything is these last 10 ganes, it is to trust the Jerry Man. He actually odes know his players and seems to have a knack for putting the right guy in the right spot to succeed.

I feel your animosity towards the $6 million Slapster, but he can produce in the 8-hole or off the bench to move a runner over. Give Jerry a chance to figure this noe out.

        • khmustache says:

i know this isn’t the topic tonight but i am excited for the infield of wright and reyes and reyes (and maybe carp) i like mini reyes bat and i love his glove. the guy came up huge tonight. btw, assuming pedro is out for awhile and duque is gone for the season, are we gonna see figgy again?

        • KinersKornerman says:

Figgy would be nice to see again, but I think Claudio Vargas is still our #6 starter. I’m ok with either one of them.

        • jws366 says:

Figgy would be phenominal as the #5. Remember when we were talking about him being our second best guy behind Johan?

        • rogasm says:

          This is a joke right?

      • Bobby V says:

most impressive – we scored 10 runs and jose never reached base

    • Tina says:

They’ve been punchy since before the game. It’s the ecstatic happiness of having our team back. Just embrace the silly.

  70. Two-By-Four says:

Let’s duplicate what the Rockies did last year!

    • KinersKornerman says:

I’d rather not lose to the Red Sox in the WS

    • X-Man says:

      That would be Nice!

I’m also starting to believe in the ‘Tatis” fantasy! I mean, all I keep hearing is that “He won’t keep this up” or “He’s not an everyday staring LF” but who’s to say the guy really can’t?

Out LF fielder everyone keeps saying we have to trade for might just be right under our nose. There is no one out there that we could trade for that is performing as well as Tatis is, no one. I was one of those people saying tatis is not the answer, but man oh man, the guy’s been so clutch and is actually one of our best hitters now, similar to how Church has surprised everyone this season.

What I see in Tatis is a ball player that really “Appreciates” this second chance he’s gotten and he is busting it all out every single day and every single at bat, this inner drive is something we shouldn’t take too lightly or take for granted.

  71. jws366 says:

It seems clear to me that we should all be praising Omar Minaya for assembling such a talented team! God bless him!

    • WestCoastMets_since86 says:

Hahaha. How even more unbelievable is it looking back now that they brought WIllie back to start the year. I mean it took like a week days under Manuel for the guys to start a 10 game win streak.

Team is lookin good. Keep up the timely hitting

  72. lawgotham says:

For the record, Dick Pole was an original Seattle Mariner.

    FInally we’re in first place.

  73. terpz06 says:

I find it highly hypocritical that this site, which professes all the time to be family friendly, went out of its way to enunciate the fact that Reds coach Dick Pole is an unintentionally humorous combination of names. And that the comments ‘discussing’ (read: trying to come up with funny spins on) this are allowed to stay. That’s a very poor job by Courtemanche and Cerrone…

    • mrose says:

      you are joking right??
Family friendly? There is a large difference in finding someone’s name funny and calling a user on this site a name or swearing AT them.
This site is family friendly, and I highly doubt there is a 9 year old surfing the comments who’s gonna go back to mommy and daddy and say “Moooooooooooom, why is the name Dick Pole funny???”

      Loosen up

  74. Mingo says:

“This is how 2006 felt, after some hard years. You don’t have to turn it off when they lose a lead, thinking there’s not a hope in hell of them coming back. They won’t win every game, but they’ve got a chance at every game.”

Well even last year when they were getting beat they were in those games. The first half of this year they were in most of those games. In other words, they haven’t really been blown out of many games. The difference is they used to give up their at bats and they used to try to nibble against batters. Now they challenge hitters. Now they work the count. They don’t give their walks away. And with two outs, they are not trying to all hit home runs.
Also, Tatis is for real. He has always had power, just not given the playing time. As far as Delgado, he looks at his peak right now, and with him playing that way, he has been our MVP during this streak.

  75. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

The only thing sillier than this group’s brief comic obsession with the name of the Red’s pitching coach is the assertion by a couple of people that this spate of Dick Pole jokes is somehow tantamount to the Decline of Western Civilization.

Surely anyone old enough to be interested in reading the commentary here is old enough to not have his or her fragile psyche injured by some slightly (and I mean very slightly) racy humor.

It’s been a long, difficult journey up to this point, so if people want to blow off a little steam at one in the morning with a couple of jokes in slightly bad taste, what’s the big deal? And if you don’t think Dick Pole heard plenty of this from classmates going back as far as the sixth grade…

Of course this site is still family friendly. How can humor that juvenile be anything but? :)

And oh yeah, great come from behind victory last night. Let’s go Mets!

  76. SlowRoller86 says:

I am really surprised to see over 200 comments and very little love for Delgado. how about some credit when credit is due?

all of the people who wanted to release Delgado (especially that Lard A** Francesca) are being revealed as the pea brains they are.

No wonder he doesnt like playing here, he struggles and gets crucified and when he is scorching hot, total silence.

    unbelievable

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

If you go back and read the in-game commentary from any of the last few games, you’ll find a lot of love for Carlos. Heartfelt apologies, even. And he deserves them.

But he’s also still, no matter how you look at it, at the tail end of his career. Maybe not this year, maybe not next, but first base is still going to be a long term problem for the Mets, and no amount of Delgado love is going to change that. I think even Carlos would admit that.

But his production at the plate of late has been outstanding, and there have been plenty of comments to that effect; they’re just not in this thread…

  77. GravediggerHebner says:

They both used to drive stock cars with Dick Trickle and Jimmie Johnson.

  78. KinersKornerman says:

    is that you, Eliot Spitzer?

  79. KinersKornerman says:

  81. Bobby V says:

nothing can compare with brian suksomwong (real person, no joke)

  82. FlyingDadBomb34 says:

Oh God, how could he still be alive with that name?

    But what about……Willie Washer?

  83. sincekindergarten says:

    How ’bout Pat McGroyne?

  84. MEX says:

I knew a Richard Bidoff. Give him the nickname and say it fast.

  85. khmustache says:

    gotta love the moral majority…

  86. Bobby V says:

  87. Bobby V says:

Dick Pole – a name too good, you just have to play with it

  88. Tina says:

    I do love that line.

  89. X-Man says:

I knew as I was writing that what the next reply would be! LOL. I originally wrote “He won’t keep it up” but I quickly changed the “It” to “This” trying to avoid the obvious implication but it didn’t work! LOL.
