If the Mets win tonight, they can easily sweep this series with Ollie and Pelfrey going tomorrow and Sunday.

    LETS GO METS!!!

  2. dobo2519 says:

Nichols…..some nice commentary on this one “enjoy, as always Lets go Mets”……man of many words are we???

    • dontstopbelieving says:

That’s the classic pregame greeting here at Metsblog; has been as long as I’ve been following.

    • kingman 26 says:

Geez man, it is a wonderful, FREE website—if you don’t like Nichols’ posts, get a life and find something else to do!!!

      • mex84 says:

Let’s go Long John! No wins the last three starts, your better then that! Join in the streak. Let’s go Met’s!

      • VegasMet says:

Couldn’t agree more kingman 26. To take it a step further, this should apply to those who come here and criticize Cerrone on a regular basis.

These people supply the best one-stop source of info & buzz on our beloved Mets. People who feel the need to pan their work are truly sad individuals.

They should demand their money back!

  3. kingman 26 says:

Of course my response was to dobo2519…..

  4. JoseReyesForPresident says:

i dont like the line up why anderson nothing against but he more of a pinch hitter put in that reyes guy hes not doing bad.

    • mex84 says:

Lefty/Righy matchup i guess. But he’s only 1/12 career vs Arroyo.

    • mets484 says:

he has been the one Met who hasn’t been tearing it up lately… tonight is a great night to start

    • hyperion4 says:

I just think that it’s a good idea to get Marlon some ABs to give him a chance to get in a groove. We know he’s a better pinch-hitter than he’s shown this year and it would be great to have him be a dangerous weapon later in the year. ABs are the only way.

  5. bvaz says:

I don’t care as much on July 18th, but come September 18th, we can’t have Anderson starting in the field. of course, he will probably egt the game winning hit tonight but I hope the Mets can find a decent OF option at least before september 1st.

  6. This is why I like Jerry…Marlon had a hit yesterday, he’s been slumping, and Jerry put him right there at #2 to give him a boost.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

And that’s why he’s playing A. Reyes, tonight, too, because . . OHWAIT.

      • Going forward Marlon is going to be far more important than Argenis, and I have seen Jerry reward the kid with at bats, a start, and a place on this team.

  7. grotesmask says:

Look, Anderson ain’t ideal, but how the F___ about…

Let’s Go Marlon, Let’s Go METS!!

    SOme spirit people!

    We love our Mets.

  8. toomanyuniforms says:

If this team had any heart at all, they could win 11 in a row in their sleep.

    Yes, that’s a joke.

  9. bvaz says:

according to MLB.com, pedro is going to throw a bullpwen session saturday and if he is 100%, he may pitch tuesday. if he is not 100%, he will probably just skip oe turn int he rotation due to the off day allowing the other 4 starters to pitch on normal rest.

  10. ExileInLA says:

It would be great to keep the streak going, and to get some help from the Fish tonite.

I like the way Jerry has been working Nick Evans into things on a somewhat regular basis. If the organization is going to call him up, he needs to play. I also see that they believe that Chavez needs to rest regularly, and combined with his botching that ball last night, probably led to his day off.

I agree with the other folks who are fed up w/Marlon Anderson, and would rather see kids like Argenis play. BTW, I liked the comment this morning about the Mets’ record with Argenis Reyes on the roster…

    • hyperion4 says:

Sorry to repeat, but . . . it just doesn’t make any sense to me to just give up on Marlon Anderson. He didn’t just forget how to hit. We *need* him to be the off-the-bench weapon this September that he was last September. Jerry has to find a way to get him in a groove. Argenis Reyes has been fun to watch but he’s not the professional hitter that Anderson has been for several years now.

    • VegasMet says:

Fed up with Anderson? Has anyone noticed that we’ve won 10 games in a row? This is a time when you don’t get to be “fed up” with anything Manuel wants to try. He ( & the team) have earned that by their play of the last 2 weeks.

Beyond that, Anderson was our most dependable lefty bat off the bench last season, and if he’s going to contribute this year, he has to be given an opportunity to find his “comfort zone”. The only way to do that is to let him have some ABs. Besides, I think young Reyes has been given ample PT by Jerry since his call-up, and I have little doubt that he will be asked to contribute many more times in his stay with the club.

  11. Flushing_is_Burning says:

wondering if anybody here bought the MLB at Bats application for iPhone, if so, is it any good?

    • Nightlife says:

I’ve been wondering about that too. Planning on getting an iPhone by the end of the month myself.

  12. TeufelsNails says:

    let’s go…11 in a row!!!!!!!!

  13. the Straw says:

These Cinci announcers are so pro-Reds…i mean they are talking about encarnacion “keeping it rollin”. Keep what rollin? their whole team sucks…the mets are the team rollin…

    • Nightlife says:

Their play-by-play man’s voice kinda irritates me. The way he says “Tatis” is really grating.

    • The Slider says:

Brantley’s not bad. He’s pretty astute baseball guy. I liked him on ESPN.

      • VegasMet says:

Have to differ on the Brantley evaluation.

So far tonight he’s called our pitcher “George” Maine, and in his pre-game tips his first line was “keep the ball down.” It seems to me that John is at his best when he goes up the ladder and has them waving at the high heat.

    • gipper82475 says:

Ugh….I know. Had to mute them on Extra Innings and put the WFAN feed on my computer…..but Howie is on vacay, so it’s Wayne (ick) and Eddie C (not bad for Mets Extra, but no play-by-play man). Still…better than the Reds announcers.

  14. MetsFanInVegas says:

Why does Arroyo have one of those old hats with the gray underneath the bill?

  15. mex84 says:

Arroyo’s ERA hasnt improved much since last time we saw him. We need to pounce on this guy so Maine has some breathing room.

  16. Nightlife says:

Would have liked to have seen some more patience to start the game considering Arroyo owns a sub 2 ERA against us.

  17. The Slider says:

Kep! We hardly knew ye. We should have kept him. That was a bad trade.

    • Nightlife says:

Yeah, I really can’t fault that trade though at the time. Keep in mind Keppinger is, like, 28 now too.

      • The Slider says:

I didn’t get the point of that trade. Keppinger for Gotay? Why?

        • 911nafstem says:

I have a reason, but it won’t be too popular

        • Nightlife says:

Easy. Gotay was younger and showed more upside at the time, while Keppinger was losing prospect status and looking like a career minor leaguer.

        • The Slider says:

I know, I know. Willie didn’t like Kep as a second baseman. But he didn’t like Gotay there any better.

        • Nightlife says:

Yes, 911nafstem, because he was latino.

        • mex84 says:

He was a player from the previous regime. Start anew.

        • The Slider says:

I know NIghtlife, but the reason why he “lost prospect status” was because the team unjustly kept saying that bout him while he’d be hitting up a storm. That’s what no one around here could understand, especially since we had no one better around at the time – or arguably since – to play second.

    • mex84 says:

He’ll hit .300 over an entire season in this park someday.

  18. 911nafstem says:

The guy who said that Schneider is a great defensive catcher has gotta be the same guy who called Santana a fiery competitor

  19. Nightlife says:

Oh no!! Joe Morgan’s in the house!!!!!

    • The Slider says:

His plotting to work his way into the booth and take over the color commentary. Everybody run for your lives!!!!

  20. mex84 says:

    Long (at-bats) John Maine!

  21. 911nafstem says:

Could you imagine having season tickets next to Joe Morgan?

  22. 911nafstem says:

The secret to beating the Mets is clearly throwing out pencil thin awkward looking white guys to pitch. Just ask Tony Larussa

  23. Bogar says:

Phils up 2-0 in the 2nd. Howard a solo HR, Burrell 2b, Jenkins 1b.

  24. mex84 says:

No more Cy Arroyo! I jinx thee!

  25. the Straw says:

I think Gary Cohen should call Ron Darling “Pizzaman” and Keith Hernandez “Sailor”…..just like they call Brantley “Cowboy”….

    god i hate that.

    • gipper82475 says:

I’m telling you, man. Put the TV feed on mute, use MLB.audio for the WFAN feed. Sycnhronize it by pausing the TV feed using your dvr/TiVo….no worries.

      • the Straw says:

hahahaa but im watching on mlb.tv.

      • The Slider says:

You have less of a life than the rest of us.

        • the Straw says:

what happened “G”lider was taken away from you?

        • gipper82475 says:

Wow, Slider, so watching the Mets out of market and not liking craptastic broadcasters is having not much of a life?

Interesting. What kind of life does a guy have to take the time to comment on how a loyal fellow Mets fan follows the team from 2,800 miles away from Flushing?

          Projection much?

        • Tina says:

I’ve discovered that if the broadcasters are really driving you batty, you can open video in explorer and audio in firefox, or vice versa. They’re not in sync, of course, but for those times when you just really can’t take it any longer.

  26. gipper82475 says:

Um…there’s hustle, then there’s stupidity. that was stupid. Arroyo’s been untouchable. Make him throw from the stretch.

    • the Straw says:

i dont hate it…bottom of the order….why not test dunn.

      • Dafatone80 says:

        Worth a shot, I figure.

Apparently Dunn’s not quite as apathetic about baseball as we’re led to believe.

      • gipper82475 says:

If it were closer, I’d agree, but the guy was waiting for him with the ball at 2nd long enough to order a cafe latte at Starbucks, drink it and then drive back to the ballpark.

        • Dafatone80 says:

If nothing else, 7th hitter leading off isn’t a terrible situation for trying it. You’re clearing the pitcher’s spot either way, and you’re not exactly killing a rally at the top of your order.

But you are right that it wasn’t very close. Except that if you watch a replay of the tag, Tatis managed to make it close anyway. One of these days, I’d love to see a guy called safe even though the ball beats him to the bag.

        • gipper82475 says:

That would be nice (correct call, despite ball arriving early) but don’t hold your breath. Just look at the ASG 2nd base ump.

After the replays and thinking about it, it wasn’t utterly stupid…just a hustle play gone wrong.

Maybe Dunn is showing off for Omar?

          Aw, Maine.

  27. MetsFanInVegas says:

It’s offical: Keith Hernandez is in love with the St. Louis Cardinals.

    • The Slider says:

Why? What did he say? I’m listening to the Reds feed.

      • MetsFanInVegas says:

Nothing in particular they were just talking about the Reds being in the wrong division and Gary brought up how good the Cardinals have been and when Keith talks about them he just seems absolutely in love with them. Seems happy for them. Happy they’ll get back Wainwright & Carpenter. Praising La Russa, etc.

  28. The Slider says:

Boy, that didn’t look like it was going out when the ball came off the bat.

  29. 911nafstem says:

Well, that made up for the two cheapos the Mets got last night

  30. the Straw says:

This ballpark is officially a joke.

  31. teufelshuffle86 says:

This ballpark is worse than Philly. Guy barely swung.

  32. gipper82475 says:

    Jose has lost his mojo.

  33. khmustache says:

    nice poke

  34. teufelshuffle86 says:

Did they just start replaying the game? That swing looked awfully familiar.

  35. VegasMet says:

OK, some people on here owe Marlon an apology…

  36. 911nafstem says:

Ok, the Mets are long overdue to smash Prince Valiant here

  37. khmustache says:

    i miss arroyo’s cornrows….they ruled

  38. teufelshuffle86 says:

    Time for a Beltran bomb.

  39. Dafatone80 says:

This Jay Bruce fellow isn’t bad at baseball.

  40. Dafatone80 says:

    Oh come on. That bounced.

  41. 911nafstem says:

Come on, you gotta drive in another run in here.

  42. The Slider says:

I really like the fight we’re showing out the gates here in the second half. Earlier in the year, we would not have come back.

    • the Straw says:

two words for you: JERRY MANUEL

      • The Slider says:

You just love doing that regardless of how little connection it has to reality. Hope you got your little jolly out of it.

        • 911nafstem says:

I don’t think anyone knows how much of a connection there is. It does seem a little coincidental though

        • gipper82475 says:

Slider is right, it’s three words: No Willie Randolph.

        • The Slider says:

Sure. The players don’t have to play each day answering questions about whether their manager will get fired if they lose the next game.

You think that might have something to do with it?

        • 911nafstem says:

But they played dead since June of last season, so you really can’t use that excuse. I just don’t think that Willie connected with his players. Obviously I don’t know for sure, but just by listening to interviews you get the feeling that the players were tired of Willie’s act.

        • The Slider says:

I wouldn’t discount the Bernazard effect. I think some of the Latin players stopped playing for Willie.

        • Dafatone80 says:

Whether or not it’s Willie’s “fault”, by the time the Mets fired Willie, it was time for Willie to go.

Whether he got pushed out by a bad front office and a bloodthirsty media, or if he just wasn’t a good fit for the team, getting rid of him has helped.

        • gipper82475 says:

          Yes re: Bernazard.

Willie is a nice man, just not an intelligent one. As such, he could probably manage a veteran AL team.

All that said, let’s just enjoy the better play, no need to dissect the whys / continue to flay “Brains” Randolph.

        • The Slider says:

I agree. I wasn’t looking to go down that road. The Straw likes to tweak The Glider on Willie. That’s ok.

        • 911nafstem says:

Either way, he’s gone, thankfully, let’s just all move on

        • mex84 says:

Manuel to his players “Play good or i’ll cut you!”.

        • The Slider says:

You had to throw in the word “thankfully.” You couldn’t have made your point without it, huh?

        • 911nafstem says:

I just don’t think he was a good manager

        • The Slider says:

You entitled to your opinion. But I thought you didn’t want to go there and we all should just concentrate on where we are today and where we’re going tomorrow.
If so, then just drop it.

        • 911nafstem says:

You’re the one who brought up Willie

        • The Slider says:

No I didn’t. Read the thread.

  43. Dafatone80 says:

Uh oh, Delgado’s looking a little pull happy.

  44. The Slider says:

Phills up 3-0. Moyer is pitching a no-hitter through 3. Oooops. Did I just say that?

  45. Dafatone80 says:

    I’m not loving this ump.

  46. 911nafstem says:

Wow, Dan Uggla is seriously an abortion

  47. reyesnwright says:

Ugla just hit into a double play with bases loaded none out: 4-2 Phillies…I guess teh All Star game carried over.

    • Dafatone80 says:

On 3 consecutive pitches, he hit into an inning ending DP, then made an error, then another error.

      Ha Ha.

  48. The Slider says:

Ha-ha. Moyer lost his no hitter and shutout in the bottom of the 4th.

  49. Dafatone80 says:

And we’re back to the contemporary era extremely low strike zone.

  50. teufelshuffle86 says:

How is that scored a hit?

    • Dafatone80 says:

That’s an extremely difficult ball to come up with, and he didn’t have a play at 1st if he did.

So Wright has to get his footwork right enough to step on the bag as he picks it. Could have been an error, but very tough play.

      Damn.

  51. 911nafstem says:

    damn

  52. khmustache says:

    damn

  53. Dafatone80 says:

I like Maine. A lot. But he’s really not someone I like with bases loaded, especially once he gets behind in the count.

  54. The Slider says:

Oh-oh. This guy Phillips always seems to kill us.

  55. mex84 says:

    Fudge

  56. Gina says:

    Sheesh.

  57. wa2k99 says:

    Disgraceful

  58. 911nafstem says:

    That sucks

  59. gipper82475 says:

Starting pitching NOT starting the unofficial 2nd half very well.

  60. Gina says:

Is Maine getting squeezed or is he still having control issues?

  61. teufelshuffle86 says:

How do you let a guy get to 2nd base there? Jesus.

  62. 911nafstem says:

I guess when you have a 10 game streak stuff like that is bound to happen

  63. SuicideWatch says:

    Pitch count 104,457,921,754,163,334,765,843

    • The .500 Club says:

Learn how to pitch Maine… thank God I held off on ordering that Maine jersey.

  64. TeufelsNails says:

Maine throws too many pitches….watching him is absolutely excrutiating

    • Gina says:

Not to mention it can’t be good for his arm long-term. Maybe that’s why he fell off in the second half of last year so much. His arm was just tired.

      • SovereignRonnie says:

Maine needs a serious out pitch. He gets two strikes and then batters just found off pitch after pitch after pitch. His offspeed stuff misses badly often so it seems like everyone goes 3-2 on this guy.

With his high heat, he needs to develop a spLitter, not a spitter as someone mentioned on this board. But something down in the zone, change the eye level. Watching him pitch is miserable.

  65. gipper82475 says:

    Get the hoooooooook

  66. 911nafstem says:

    What next?

  67. TeufelsNails says:

GET HIM OUTTA THERE; HE STINKS

  68. Dafatone80 says:

    OH COME ON!

    There’s a rule about this.

you HAVE TO MAKE AN EFFORT TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF THE PITCH.

    • The .500 Club says:

Seriously… he moved his arms into that pitch.

I am so disappointed in Maine, he has been my favorite Met pitcher for some time now, but I always knew that the wheels would eventually fall off. You simply can’t fool big league hitters for 2+ years with only 90 MPH fastball. Also, he throws WAY too many pitches.

  69. mex84 says:

High pitch counts lead to walks Johnny. Maybe he should learn a spitter to be his out pitch. No one probably looks for it anymore.

  70. teufelshuffle86 says:

Maine can’t even get a pitch out close now?

  71. gipper82475 says:

Horrible performance by the starters these last two games against an abysmal team.

    • tengobotas says:

They’re not that bad, theyre about even with the Braves. They were even 7 games above .500 to start the series.

  72. wa2k99 says:

What the hell has happened to him? We’re giving the game away!

  73. SuicideWatch says:

Well, I don’t know what to say, Maine is just bombing out this season.

  74. tengobotas says:

I really though Maine was gonna come back this season and tear it up and hes just been sliding and sliding. Someone mentioned a while ago that hes statistically gotten much worse since the jacket is gone, can anyone here back that up?

    • i was thinking that, but i’m actually not so sure anymore.

      baseball-reference.com/pi/gl.cgi?n1=mainejo01&t=p&year=2008

peterson was fired june 17, so it looks like 3.87/.238 before he was fired and 4.33/.212 after. it sounds dumb but i could have sworn he LOOKS more than half a run/9 IP worse since the departure of the jacket, which, you know, not at all subjective!

  75. bringbackolerud5 says:

John Maine has been a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT this year. He is lucky to go 5 in any start.

  76. CaveManJoe says:

    Maine stinks

  77. teufelshuffle86 says:

Ranking the Mets starters right now:

    1. Pelfrey
    2. Perez
    3. Santana
    4. Maine

    • ImissPiazza says:

      This is a joke right?

Santana has one bad start and he’s the 3rd best pitcher? Good thinking buddy.

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

Right now I have much more confidence with Pelfrey out there than I do Santana. Just sayin’

      • SuicideWatch says:

        More like:

        Santana
        Pelfrey
        Open spot
        Open spot
        Open spot

Yeah and Ollie is our 2nd best right now??? He’s coming off a 6 walk outing.

      • tengobotas says:

It has to be because two weeks ago this whole blog wanted to crucify Perez.

      • Two-By-Four says:

He means the way they’re pitching right now. This is subject to change at any point and doesn’t take into account their performance over an extended period.

      • tengobotas says:

Reyes needs to go to the Ichiro Suzuki School of Lead-off Hitting.

    • mex84 says:

Who would have thought! I am sure that will change soon.

    • 911nafstem says:

I’d take Perez in a must win game over Santana right now.

  78. ImissPiazza says:

Im feeling this win streak come to an end.

Maine has got to rememer how to pitch. If not, you never know, he could be dealt.

  79. bringbackolerud5 says:

Gary Cohen makes excuse after excuse. Just shut up already! He was so much better on radio.

  80. teufelshuffle86 says:

Looks like this team will just have to rally again.

  81. SuicideWatch says:

5-2, can the pen keep it close????

  82. almar1965 says:

Looks like Maine left his testicles at home again. That’s the title of his 2008 season apparently.

He seems destined to back end rotation status at this rate.

  83. 911nafstem says:

Getting this freaking out, how much bullsht can happen in one inning?

  84. G_Lunt says:

Showy has to get this out…We fell behind 5-2 yesterday, to say we are out of this game at this point would be the dumbest thing you could ever say.

  85. VegasMet says:

C’mon, Show $ the Pen need to hold them here & the bats will answer…

  86. Gina says:

Hopefully good ollie shows up tomorrow. We’re going to need someone to eat some innings.

    • G_Lunt says:

I completely agree… at this rate our bullpen will be burned in a week..we got the Sillies next.

  87. Dafatone80 says:

The Reds are a strange team. At the beginning of the year, they were my sleeper playoff team.

Then I remembered they’re coached by Dusty Baker.

They have a very good offense. They haven’t really hit amazingly this year, but a good combination of veterans and young talent. Mostly young talent, but that’s not a bad thing.

Their rotation hasn’t been bad, especially when you consider how good Volquez has been. Cueto isn’t bad and should get better, Harang had a good third of the year, and Arroyo’s not terrible. I have no idea who their 5th starter is, and he’s probably terrible.

They have a good closer, if not a good pen.

This one’s not over yet, and I don’t want to sound like I’m making excuses or anything. But this Reds team really should be playing better than they are. Too bad for them that they have baseball’s worst manager.

Ridiculous fact of the day: The Reds have two walk-off homeruns hit on 0-2 counts after the batter fell behind trying to sac bunt.

    • Gina says:

That hiring made zero sense to me. For one, no offense to Baker, but I’m pretty sure he’s the last person I would want near a young talented team. Maybe an old team of players who basically no how to run themselves, but not players still developing.

I mean he wouldn’t make Votto a starter early the season because he walked too often and didn’t swing at enough pitches. Like he actually was quoted as saying he needed to swing at more pitches. And then he didn’t want Bruce called up because he has some sort of crazy man love for Patterson.

  88. bringbackolerud5 says:

Maine is a big time concern. With Pedro’s problems, the Mets need an arm.

  89. TeufelsNails says:

Whatever’s going on with Maine, it’s obviously mental; he’s got a good fastball….he almost throew a wild pitch on a pitchout for crissakes!!!!….and i don’t think he can be converted into a 40 homerun-hitting centerfielder if he can’t keep his head straight….

  90. bringbackolerud5 says:

Don’t forget David Wright’s wonderful defensive play on Keppinger. Yes, you can say it was a tough play, but this guy never makes that tough play.

  91. VegasMet says:

Way to go Scott! Now let’s start chipping at the lead…

  92. G_Lunt says:

It’s weird how Jose Reyes is in an 0-fer and the Mets have been playing so well. I hope he finds his stroke again.

  93. The Slider says:

We can get to Arroyo. Let go Mets! I don’t the Cincy’s bullpen is that good (is it?).

    • The Slider says:

      Never mind.

      • Dafatone80 says:

Good closer, though he got roughed up last night. Bray is a good lefty, other than that, I don’t think they’re that great.

I do believe they still have David Weathers.

  94. teufelshuffle86 says:

How many f’ing times is Reyes going to pop up today?

  95. SuicideWatch says:

Does anyone else find Arroyo’s leg kick and hair the most annoying thing???

  96. cousinrk says:

Wow, what the heck is Reyes doing. He’s hit 6 short fly balls to the outfield this series. Was he watching tapes of his September from last year during the break?

  97. mex84 says:

Lets not lose to a$$clown Aroyyo again, lets go guys!

  98. VegasMet says:

Even the Red announcers are raggin’ on Jose & his pop-ups…

  99. The .500 Club says:

Nothing is more frustrating than a seven pitch inning like that after a big half inning.

  100. teufelshuffle86 says:

That half inning lasted under 3 minutes.

  101. SuicideWatch says:

That was the weakest inning I’ve seen in a while.

  102. lil pelf says:

john maine and fernando martinez for matt holliday

    • the Straw says:

      booooooooooooooo

      • lil pelf says:

boo you, i don’t see john maine in our playoff rotation and prospect outfielder for proven outfielder is an automatic decision

        • the Straw says:

you dont see john maine in our playoff rotation?!?!?!

did game 6 of the NLCS not work for you when he pitched 6 innings of shutout baseball.

how about game 161 of last season, when the season was on the line, and he almost no hit the marlins???

you are crazy…maine is not going anywhere.

        • Gina says:

But you have no problem relying on crazy Perez injury prone Pedro, a guy who’s virtually a rookie and ????.

Really we need Maine and we need him to at least pitch like a solid number 3 pitcher the rest of the way.

        • lil pelf says:

i was at game six and he pitched great, but santana pelfrey perez are my top three and i’ll gladly have pedro as my fourth starter and matt holliday in left field for any playoff series.

    • The Slider says:

That’s an interesting proposal. I’m not ready to give up on Maine. I think he’s still going to be a very very good pitcher in this league. We can get Nady for much cheaper.

      • shiprdr19 says:

I agree with you about Maine. But Nady will not come cheaply. The Pirates will make us overpay to get him.

  103. miker94 says:

looks like reyes is back to his old self. popup after popup.

  104. the Straw says:

well we may not win tonight…but im not ready to lose faith just yet…

tomorrows story: the last team in MLB to come 3 runs behind to win a game has now done it two games in a row.

    • khmustache says:

wow somebody who’s not ready to jump off a bridge or trade/cut the entire team on metsblog?!!

      • shiprdr19 says:

I’m just as shocked as you, khmustache! The chatter on here during Mets games makes me laugh.

  105. teufelshuffle86 says:

Maine is the only guy I don’t trust as a starter right now (Santana is getting closer but I’ll give him more time). I like our chances the rest of the weekend with Pelfrey and Perez going.

  106. bringbackolerud5 says:

That makes a good poll question here……..Would you include Maine in a deal for Holliday? Realisitcally, Maine and F-Mart just might get that done…..I would have to do it……..other thoughts?????

    • the Straw says:

      No way. Never. Absolutely not.

      • Dafatone80 says:

        No. No No No.

No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No.

Holliday just isn’t that good outside of Coors.

I wish he were. But he isn’t.

    • Gina says:

      No.

IMO the only way we trade Maine is if for some reason we’re out of it and we’re getting a ridiculous package of prospects for him. We trade him and we’re looking at filling 3 rotation spots next year.

    • SuicideWatch says:

Who pitches for the Mets??? Relying on El Duque?? Pedro??? Claudio Vargas??

  107. SovereignRonnie says:

This 10 game streak is very nice. But it’s games like these that try my patience. There seems to be no approach at the plate… or maybe, the approach is “swing at everything.” The starting pitching was again awful. This is like April vs. the Braves all over again. They’re due a clunker every now and then… but games like this are frustrating, and the reason I was frustrated in April.

    • VegasMet says:

Man…trying not to get trampled as they jump off the bandwagon…

      • SovereignRonnie says:

Not bandwagon at all, just realistic. I realize, you’re never as good as you look during the bad streaks, and never as good as you look during the good streaks. I just don’t get how this team goes from looking great at the plate to looking lost at the plate in 1 game. That’s what’s frustrating.

    • shiprdr19 says:

Please calm down. The Mets are fine. Don’t overanalyze this one game. Remember, it’s not even over yet.

    • the Straw says:

in april these games were the majority of the time, not 10% of the time….just calm down will you.

  108. Can we get Peterson back and just stick him in Maine’s locker? I feel like Maine didn’t, well, suck when Peterson was around, but if so, he was pretty much the only one.

    • khmustache says:

it’s weird, everyone hates the jacket except maine and zito

      • lil pelf says:

because they throw too many pitches per inning and overanalyze every at bat just like peterson

        • Gina says:

I don’t know if his stats were skewed by earlier games in the season but Perez throws like .4 less pitches than Maine and Pelfrey throws like .8 less. Maine is second in the NL, Perez is 4th and Pelfrey is 6th. So it’s not just a Maine problem.

  109. the Straw says:

    Here we go….SUPERMAN

  110. lil pelf says:

    trade tatis! haha

  111. reyesnwright says:

Jeez…that 3-0 pitch was half a foot outside.

    • fongulalou says:

Not a foot but about half a foot. The beauty of baseball.
That one pitch might be the game. He walks Tatis and
      hes outta there.

    • Dafatone80 says:

This ump loves Arroyo. Called a strike on Easley that pretty much bounced.

    • SuicideWatch says:

It sure was and the only reason Easley struck out was because he had to chase garbage off the outside corner because the Ump is calling strikes on balls 2 feet outside.

      • reyesnwright says:

Yup..Makes it almost impossible to hit Arroyo for righties knowing that anything within a foot of the outside corner will be called a strike. He can just throw his slider out there with 2 strikes and they have to swing.

  112. Gina says:

I hate watching on yahoo’s gamechannel. I refresh, it’s runners on first and third, 1 out, Tatis is up with 3 balls and 1 strike. I refresh again Scho is pitching. I mean can I get an explanation at least.

  113. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Umpiring this year has been the worst I have ever seen it, not just against the Mets. Other games I have watched this year besides Mets have had bad umpiring in them.

    • khmustache says:

100000% agree, instant replay wouldn’t even be discussed even 10 years ago. the umpiring has been a joke this year

      • huge_mets_fan11 says:

You something else, replay MAY help with homerun calls but it is obviously not going to help with ball and strike calls which have also been the worst I have seen.

  114. Dafatone80 says:

Before we go through with hanging Maine, let’s remember that he’s shown up huge for us in big games.

He was our best postseason starter in ‘06. And last year, in the second to last game of the year, he delivered one of the best starts in Mets’ history.

    • Bogar says:

Yeah, but if he didn’t have so many bad second half starts last year maybe the second to last game of the year would have just been a playoff tuneup.

      • Dafatone80 says:

Definitely true. Just pointing out that he does come through in the big spots.

  115. Dafatone80 says:

Okay, I’m tired of being positive. Did we seriously fail to bring in Beltran after a leadoff triple?

  116. bringbackolerud5 says:

    Maine sucks!!!!!!!

  117. G_Lunt says:

    sucked

  118. capitalcitygoofball says:

    Dick Pole.

  119. Dafatone80 says:

Just like I thought at the beginning of the year, this is a good Reds team.

    Managed by an idiot.

    • Gina says:

I think everyone in here needs to step away from the ledge.

      • Dafatone80 says:

Don’t worry, I’m actually pretty positive with this team.

I’m just very, very negative when it comes to Dusty Baker.

  120. bringbackolerud5 says:

HEY JOSE REYES………….WAKE UP…..THE BREAK IS OVER……YOU USUALLY WAIT TIL SEPTEMBER TO GO IN THE TANK

  121. bringbackolerud5 says:

dude, 9 awful at bats with no approach, stop talking

    • Dafatone80 says:

You have no idea what his approach was.

Maybe it was “gee, this guy has good breaking stuff, I’ll swing at the first fastball I see.”

      • SovereignRonnie says:

Dafatone, I understand your prior posts, and that it’s really not time to panic after one game. But, Reyes swung at 2nd pitch slider (1st inning), a 2nd pitch changeup (4th inning), a 2nd pitch slider (6th inning) and a first pitch fastball (8th inning). That is a pretty weak approach.

But the entire team has come out swinging early and often, perhaps that was the team-wide game plan?

        • Dafatone80 says:

          Would be my guess.

Arroyo’s got great offspeed stuff, but hasn’t really had the success that should come with it.

  122. SovereignRonnie says:

Jose Reyes has seen a total of 7 pitches in 4 ABs.

    • fongulalou says:

You couldnt make it up,Reds ‘caster “that looks like it for
Arroyo,he just got a pat on the back and a big handshake
      from Dick Pole”.

  123. khmustache says:

    9 walks…dang

  124. reyesnwright says:

Ha, that missed somewhere for ball 4. It was outside but not nearly as bad as the calls Arroyo got.

  125. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Btw, I have said this lots of times but Dunn would be the most logical choice for us. Supposedly the Reds are not asking a lot for him and would come cheaper then Nady or Bay.

  126. Dafatone80 says:

Alright, maybe Cordero blows 2 in a row.

I’m getting killed in fantasy ball this week. I have Francisco Cordero, and Maine.

Hopefully I suffer a little more here.

  127. huge_mets_fan11 says:

The Phillies were recently working on a blockbuster with Colorado that would have netted them Brian Fuentes and Matt Holliday for something like Shane Victorino, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson. Those talks have stalled, and the added payroll might’ve been a problem for the Phillies anyway.

Found this on mlbtraderumors, hopefully that does not happen.

    • Gina says:

I kind of hope it does. It would effectively destroy their farm system without improving their team very much.

      • Dafatone80 says:

I’d love to see them pull the trigger there.

I know Carrasco’s their best prospect. I don’t quite know about Happ. Marson is also a big prospect, and losing Victorino will hurt.

Their pen has been very good this year, and Fuentes isn’t going to have a huge impact. Holliday won’t do a ton for them. One of Burrell and Holliday will have to play in right, and that’s a pretty weak defensive OF with Werth in center.

      • huge_mets_fan11 says:

That would actually improve their roster tremendously, Holliday in that lineup and ballpark would be devasting for us.

        • Gina says:

Eh, I’m still iffy on any Rockies player outside of Coors, even in a band box, it’s not the dimensions of Coors it’s the air. But regardless the Phillies offense is already great, the problem is they have horrible starting pitching, this trade wouldn’t fix anything. It would just rid them off a young highly regarded pitcher who could be in the rotation as soon as next year.

        • Dafatone80 says:

I really just don’t see Holliday having that huge an impact outside of Coors, even in Philly.

And Victorino is a TREMENDOUSLY underrated ballplayer.

He covers a ton of ground in center, can run, and isn’t bad with the bat.

        • SovereignRonnie says:

I agree with Dafatone here. Victorino is awesome in CF defensively, and the upgrade at the plate may not offset the downgrade in the field. That deal would kill their minor league system as Gina said.

Then again, with all the fly-ball pitchers we trot out there, I think the Phils would match up better against us with Holliday… just not necessarily the rest of the league.

        • fongulalou says:

Trades not gonna happen after they got Blanton.

        • John The Mets Fan says:

Not true. It could very well happen. Phillies needed to make a move to get a starter in the rotation. There are 3 prized prospects in the Phillies system, one of which includes Carlos Carrasco. The Phillies didnt give up one of them in the Blanton deal, they were lower level prospects and by all accounts 2-3 years away from being major league ready. They could move the “real” prospects including Carrasco for a bat. And Gillick has something to prove this year being his last year as GM……

Dont be surprised if the Phils make a move for Holliday

  128. khmustache says:

    man, arroyo owns the mets

  129. shiprdr19 says:

Oh no. The Mets lose. Let’s all jump to conclusions and say we are back to the “same old Mets.” If you would’ve told me back on July 4th that the Mets aren’t going to lose again until July 18, how many of us would have signed up for it?

  130. kd bart says:

Oh well. The streak is over. Turn the page. Start a new one tomorrow.

  131. Dafatone80 says:

And here I thought the mets would end the season on a 60something game winning streak.

That’s it, abolish the season, tear down Citi Field. Let’s all give up.

  132. tengobotas says:

It probably wouldnt be so bad but man does that guys hair piss me off.

  133. John The Mets Fan says:

Wow….Arroyo pitched like he was Johan Santana or something. And Johan Santana pitched like……er, well…….nevermind

  134. VegasMet says:

Well, thank God that’s over! Nobody would listen to my negative posts when the damn team was winning every day. Finally…Reyes sucks! Wright sucks! Beltran sucks! Delgado sucks! The bench sucks! The starters suck! The bullpen sucks! Wagner sucks! & Manuel really sucks!

Now pay attention dammit! We lost a game…

    Let’s go Mets!

  135. Koko says:

I have less and less confidence in John Maine. . .I figured the time off would do him good, but no so far.

And obviously I don’t trust Perez yet (and anyone that does needs to look at his history) and then there is Pedro. So basically 3/5 of the rotation are semi-question marks in terms of innings they can give in a given outing. Which leads to an extremely tired bullpen and we’ve all seen what that can lead to.

Mets pitchers need to go at least 6 innings consistently, if not 7. With an occasional 8-9 inning outing for the Mets to be truly successful this season.

    • KinersKornerman says:

Today was not entirely on Maine. A big run of 2-out bad luck in the 5th did him in. If he catches the bunt, he goes 6 easy. If Wright makes the play on Keppinger, Maine gets into the 6th. It was not our night. Maine did fine.

      • kd bart says:

And Phillip’s hit was a bloop that fell in. Not exactly a hard hit inning but he made his own trouble with the wildness.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Agreed. And the homer off Maine was a joke. Bruce flicked the bat at the ball, and it’s gone. Stupid stadium.

Maine was wild a bit, definitely needs to work on that.

        • Bogar says:

Don’t recall a lot of complaints when DWright hit a HR that just barely went out the night before…

      • patrick says:

If, if, if…the problem is John Maine routinely throws 5+ pitches to every batter he faces.

Maine did not do fine, he is a weak link that taxes the bullpen heavily.

  136. John The Mets Fan says:

    Mets starters since the break:

    0-1 with a 8.80 ERA

And the second half is Santana’s “best”…..

  137. Well, that’s how a .500 team goes. You win 10, you lose one.
