Note: Wagner To Have MRI
By Mike Nichols - Jul 20, 2008 8:05 pm

Speaking with reporters after today’s win against the Reds, Jerry Manuel said Billy Wagner was experiencing cramping in his shoulder, which began while Wagner was warming up in the bullpen.

Wagner, who will have a precautionary MRI on Monday, told reporters his shoulder has been bothering him for the last two weeks, but is not worried about his condition.

…as i wrote in the postgame, despite waiving off the trainer and striking out the side in the ninth, wagner did not look comfortable out on the mound, especially after throwing a breaking ball…

..cross your fingers…

    sweet

  2. dontstopbelieving says:

If this is how he pitches when he’s cramping, is there a way we can induce a daily pregame cramp?

    • Steviefan84 says:

I didn’t think it was anything and that’s why when Manuel and the trainer came out, I thought they made a mistake because afterwards Wagner was laughing about it and his command wasn’t all that bad. I hope he is ok though, Mets need Wagner down the stretch along with Sanchez and Heilman.

  3. MetsFanInVegas says:

I don’t think this is anything to joke about. If anything happened to Wagner who closes for us? Sanchez? Who is reliable enough to take the 8th inning? It would just open another hole and this team needs a bat, it can’t afford to need a bat AND a reliever capable of closing/closer.

    • Burn0820 says:

Better get the chips together for Brian Fuentes if this ends up being a long term problem

  4. chicagometfan says:

I certainly hope wags is OK. He sure looked sharp in his two outings in Cincy.
Just in case ….at least Kunz has been looking real good lately in AA.

    • MetsFanInVegas says:

No way do I want Kunz coming up closing in the middle of a three team pennant race. Pitching in New York, the pressure of making the playoffs, let alone the pressure that would be there in the first place, wouldn’t wanna put him in that situation right away.

      • chicagometfan says:

Just to be clear I was not advocating Kunz closing nor do I want to HAVE to bring him up but if Wags is hurt you go closer by committee and add Kunz to the front end of the bullpen mix

  5. skylog says:

how many people can go down? this is starting to get scary. think about all the injuries.

  6. bvaz says:

no need to worry until there is a reason to worry.

  7. Andrew says:

Wagner will be fine. Cramps happen.

  8. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

billy the kid will be fine, he is resilient, and he was great today, he wont get injured, and dontstopbelieving, whats the deal, i mean that was uncalled for and that is not funny, if he gets injured badly, then you dont have a closer, GOT IT, so cross your fingers and hope he is ok.

    • Kellman says:

This is a joke right? If not, wow, lighten up. That guy’s post above wasn’t a big deal at all. It wasn’t in bad taste and it isn’t anything that anyone should be sensitive too. Seriously? Wow.

      • MetsFan1976 says:

Agreed. Billy, himself, said something along the lines of that he should be hurt more often.

  9. JavaJoe says:

I would venture to guess his shoulder was bothering him for quite sometime now.

After his great season start he went cold blowing those games…..maybe that’s the start of this?

  10. NYCESQ says:

If anything happens to him, we are in HUGE trouble. Even if Duaner could take the closing job, we would HAVE to deal and overpay for another setup man.

    Sad.

  11. Kunz can be the new Wainwright!
    or not.

I guess I’m OK with Dirty closing.

  12. chicagometfan says:

Better to use Sanchez as the closer and give Kunz a chance than to overpay for a marginal closer. That said, please be OK Wags

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Maybe Billy is just making this up, to silence all of his critics. You know, the ol’ “you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone,” sort of thing–except this time it’s a “you don’t know what you’ve got until there’s a threat of it being gone” sort of thing. :)

  13. MetsFan4Decades says:

I am not a one of Wagner’s critics, even when he had those blown saves earlier….but have to ask. If he knew his shoulder was bothering him, cramping up for 2 weeks, why didn’t say thank you, but take a pass on the ASG, give it at least 3 full days rest???

The fact that he didn’t, I’m keeping my fingers crossed he knows his own body and thinks this is no big deal…..

    • Tina says:

He said the way to deal with it is to keep pitching. Which may be him being all manly, or maybe he’s familiar with it, and it just needs working through.

    • fsolomon75 says:

That’s a great question… that’s why I’m hoping this isn’t a big deal. Wagner wouldn’t jeopardize his season just to pitch in the ASG, right?

Why am I getting flashbacks to his back spasms acting up in Florida again?

  14. Flushing_is_Burning says:

Jeez!!! Another one??? Who’s their conditioning coach?? Humpty dumpty??

  15. casey s. says:

In the Star Wars tradition: I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

  16. stickguy says:

if this really is a problem that he needs to work through by pitching, it might explain some of his troubles earlier. Didn’t he have a long stretch where he hardly pitched, just before he pitched like crap?

I know, reaching here! Hopefully he is OK. For all the grief he gets for some of his big game exploits, the pen still needs him.

If he does go out, just use a committee approach. Sanchez, even heilmann can fill the role. Heck, Muniz has lots of closer experience.

THeir really isn’t much difference to coming into the 7th or 8th inning with a small lead to hold, or the 9th.

  17. Flushing_is_Burning says:

pitching probables for the phillies series:
    Blanton vs Santana
    Myer vs Maine
    Moyer vs Ollie
We need Wagner more than ever. Those could be very close games

  18. The King of Queens says:

If Wagner goes down long term I think Joe Smith could close he really proved he can handle pressure in the game in Philly. If not him we might have to make that Fuentes move. Best case scenario wags is fine Fuentes comes in to strengthen the bull pen sign K-Rod in the off season.

  19. sincekindergarten says:

Maybe this is Billy trying to sow the seeds of something in the Phillthies’ minds. Don’t know what it is, but it sounds as if “Ol’ Country Billy” is playing some sort of mind game. He obviously was able to pitch through this, else we’d be screaming about his string of blown saves since the ASB. Hopefully it won’t be something big.

If, God forbid, Billy has to go on the DL, bring Kunz up and do a bullpen-by-committee thing. Wags said that Heilman could take over for him (early in the season, then Heilman was horrible). Maybe so. Duaner could close a game or two.

    No MRI scheduled for Wagner
Just woke up Mets pr honcho Jay Horwitz (sorry, Jay). Contrary to a report today, closer Billy Wagner is not scheduled to have an MRI today on his throwing shoulder.

Wagner felt better on the plane last night after having some trouble getting loose yesterday before striking out the side in the 10th inning of the Mets’ 7-5 win over the Reds.

If Wagner wakes up today and feels tightness again, he may go see the Mets’ doctor. That’s the latest as of 7:40 a.m.

  21. MetsFan234 says:

If Billy Wagner misses an extended period of time, it wouldn’t surprise me if the mets give up players to bring in Brian Fuentes to New York.

  22. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

fuenetes would be a huge mistake, he is an overrated, lefty with an era of like 3.5, and i dont like his delivery, plus you give up prospects, i would rather have duaner as your closer and heilman setting up
