postGame: Mets 7 Reds 5

by Mike Nichols on July 20th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

The Mets (53-46) defeated the Reds (48-51) by the score of 7 to 5 in Cincinnati today.

With the Mets win and Phillies loss to the Marlins, the Mets are again tied for first in the NL East standings.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

  • Mike Pelfrey, like the Reds’ Edison Volquez, seemed a bit perturbed by the home plate umpire Paul Schrieber’s small strikezone. Despite giving up 3 HRs over his seven innings pitched, Pelfrey looked in control and never seem to lose confidence in his stuff.
  • Jose Reyes finally stopped hitting pop-ups and had a big day, going 4-for-6 with a triple. Reyes’ 63rd triple of his career broke the Mets franchise record of 62 triples set by Mookie Wilson. Congrats Jose.
  • Carlos Delgado continues to rake, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. He is batting .419 during the month of July.
  • Despite the Mets getting the win and scoring seven runs, they continue to squander opportunities to score runs be leaving a total of 30 men on base in the last two games, including 14 during today’s game.
  • Speaking of squandered opportunities, I like that Carlos Beltran is being aggressive on the base paths, but he must use a bit more judgment when trying to steal third. It might have cost the Mets, but luckily it didn’t.
  • Reds C Paul Bako looks like Andrew McCarthy from the Weekend at Bernie’s films.
  • Marlon Anderson may be the worst outfielder in the league.
  • The Reds’ Brandon Phillips and Edwin Encarnacion sure do love to showboat when they hit homeruns. Karma got them both in the 10th when they blundered a possible double-play that lead to the go-ahead run scoring.
  • Billy Wagner was dominant picking up his 24 save of season. Even though he waived off the trainer and breezed through the inning he didn’t look comfortable on the mound today.

The Mets resume play on Tuesday against the Phillies at Shea Stadium with Johan Santana facing Joe Blanton.
