Opinion: What’s on Second?

July 21, 2008 at 4:22 pm · 90 comments

by Ted Berg

I wrote a column today addressing this and some other concerns at SNY.tv, but briefly:

Among qualifying second basemen, Luis Castillo has the lowest Revised Zone Rating in the Majors, meaning he converts fewer plays in his fielding zone than anyone else. The only player with more than 100 innings at second and a lower RZR than Castillo? Damion Easley.

It’s hard to argue with success, and the Mets have had plenty of that since Castillo went on the DL and Easley took the second-base reins. But Easley’s impressive .322 batting average this month has been relatively empty — he’s not getting on base (.339 OBP) or hitting for power (.390 SLG) in July.

Castillo still hasn’t been cleared for baseball activities, but once he does, Omar Minaya has some decisions to make. Do you part ways with Argenis Reyes, the best defensive second baseman on the club, to make room for Castillo? Or do you carry three second basemen, none of whom is particularly good on offense?

It doesn’t seem like the Mets are in the market for second sackers, so they might have to get creative to get the best production out of the position for the rest of this season.

Another, more positive statistical tidbit from the column on SNY.tv: The Mets’ bullpen was 7-11 with a 4.10 ERA under Willie and Rick Peterson. Since they’ve swapped Tuscan tile for the parquet floor, the bullpen is 8-2 with a 3.23 ERA. Could be a coincidence, for sure, but could also be a byproduct of Jerry Manuel’s dedication to defined bullpen roles. The biggest improvements? The recovering Duaner Sanchez was at 4.71 under Willie and has a 0.61 ERA under Jerry. Also, getting rid of Jorge Sosa and his 7.06 mark has probably helped a bit.

Yunel Escobar’s injured rotator cuff is better and after six days off he’s clear to play against the Marlins Monday night.

Pat Burrell voiced displeasure with Charlie Manuel’s strategy of removing Burrell late in the game.  He came out with a 2-1 lead, and the Phillies ended up losing.  He was not disrespectful, just angry.

The Marlins credit Cody Ross’s hot streak (.360 BA in 27 games) to his spraying the ball to all fields.

July is the first month this season the Nationals reached double digits in runs scored twice in a game.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports the Mets have expressed interest in A’s RHP Huston Street, but does not believe the Mets matchup up well with the A’s.

Rosenthal also suggests the White Sox, Dodgers and Brewers are interested in Street.

Meanwhile, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Mets still continue to be a ‘prime suitor’ for the Pirates OF Xavier Nady.

Kovacevic reports the Pirates continue to seek two prospects each for both Nady and LHP Damaso Marte.

In a report for the Daily News, Adam Rubin reports Mets prospect Daniel Murphy recently asked to switch positions, from third base to second base.

According to Rubin, Murphy, who plays for the Mets Double-A Binghamton affiliate, has committed three errors since making the move 15 games ago, but is receiving positive reviews for his play.

In 82 games this season for the B-Mets, Murphy is batting .306 with 11 HR and 57 RBI.

Quote: Command Was Off

July 21, 2008 at 8:54 am · 11 comments

by Mike Nichols

During yesterday’s win over the Reds, Mike Pelfrey pitched seven innings, allowing five runs on six hits (3 HR) and one walk, while striking out four.

Pelfrey, on having the confidence to pitch through a tough outing:

“I feel like i’m getting better. Not pitching in nine days, my command was a little off. Especially with the sinker. My sinker wasn’t very good today. That is my out pitch and it wasn’t very good and command wise it was a little off.”

Pelfrey, on pitching deep into the game:

“As a pitcher you always want to at least go six. Giving up two-to-three runs, but giving up five is not a quality start, but the bottom line is, we won.”

In four starts this month, Pelfrey is 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA.

Quote: We Didn’t Play Good Baseball

July 21, 2008 at 8:37 am · 25 comments

by Mike Nichols

With yesterday’s 7-5 win versus the Reds, and the Phillies loss to the Marlins, the Mets are now tied for first place in the National League East.

Jerry Manuel, on yesterday’s game, speaking with reporters after the game:

“Very big win today. We were facing a very tough pitcher that we got a high pitch count. Mike Pelfrey was really outstanding, for the most part. He gave up a couple homeruns there or whatever, but he was very good. We can’t afford to going in there and not playing winning baseball. We didn’t play good baseball, but we won. Hopefully we can keep it going once we get home.”

Manuel, on Mike Pelfrey’s performance:

“His location versus those lefties early on where he was dotting that outside corner with power sink. That was very good stuff.”

…manuel is right, the Mets did not play very good baseball this weekend, especially with their situational hitting, leaving 30 men on base in the last two games…
