In a report for the Daily News, Adam Rubin reports Mets prospect Daniel Murphy recently asked to switch positions, from third base to second base.
According to Rubin, Murphy, who plays for the Mets Double-A Binghamton affiliate, has committed three errors since making the move 15 games ago, but is receiving positive reviews for his play.
In 82 games this season for the B-Mets, Murphy is batting .306 with 11 HR and 57 RBI.

Could be the best decision this kid has ever made. If he’s any good, he can have a shot at starting, eventually, at 2B. Where as Wright has 3B locked up…forever.
Ofcourse 3B is a much more powerful position where you’re less likely to get hurt and more likely to earn a big contract. Not like he’s blocked by 5 other second basemen on the team…
This kid definitely knows what goes on in Flushing. Smart.
Most people are aware that David Wright plays 3B for the Mets.
He must have seen Castillo play.
He must not have seen Delgado play.
This is an obvious move, assuming the kid can play second base.
Argenis Reyes look pretty good there but I agree, Murphy did the smart thing switching posiitions. He’d be blocked at that position.
what does this mean for reese havens? someone is trade bait.
i doubt it as reese i believe can play other positions besides 2b. Good to have depth though.
Reese is still in A ball! just because someone is signed at a position doesn’t mean that they’ll stay in that position. They almost never do.
Reese is a Shortstop by trade, not a second baseman, although because of Reyes people obviously project him to eventually move. And Reese Havens is at least over a year away. Not a large concern right now. We’ll worry about that when the time comes. If Havens can hit, his value will carry anywheres the Mets want to put him.
I’ve read more than once that Havens might even become a catcher. He seems to be really versatile. He’s not like Ike Davis who projects as a 1B because they’re just trying to stick his bat somewhere. Havens is purportedly a good natural defender all over the diamond.
Ike is also an outfielder and if neither of those two positions work out for him he can probably pitch out of the bullpen
I think Davis is more likely to end up in the of than first base.
Havens is probably 3 years away. It means absolutely nothing.
3 years away? Everything I’ve read said he could be ready by the beginning of 2010.
Well, so maybe he will be ready in two years. That’s assuming a perfect progression through the minors, and even then, it’s unlikely that he makes the team out of ST, unless he’s absolutely tearing the cover off the ball.
I like Reese Havens and think he’ll be a good player. We just need to remember that prospects rarely ever shoot through the system and perform at the ML level in the best-case scenarios we all like to think about.
3 years is a stretch. the man has already played and excelled in big time d1 college baseball. i’d say he’s at worst 2 years away.
He had two sub-par seasons before breaking out at 21. He’ll likely start at Hi-A next year, and if he performs well he could see AA. The next season, I imagine he’ll start at AA or AAA, and could get cups of coffee or even a longer look. At best, IMO, he’ll be primed to be a starting IF at the ML level by the 2011 season.
Again, I’m talking about when he’d be ready to assume full-time starting responsibilities. It’s entirely possible that he’s on the roster at some point in 2010.
How about first – wonder if he would consider trying first base as well?
He doesn’t hit enough to play first. And if he for some reason did move there, he’d still be behind Evans and Carp on the depth chart.
Murphy’s played 1B a handful of times already this year.
He doesnt really hit with the power to be a big league 1B, but if he could be a superior defensive 1B maybe it works. They would need some more production out of LF/RF if Murphy was going to be an everyday 1B. He seems to be turning into Ty Wiggington v2.0 for the most part.
“if he could be a superior defensive 1B maybe it works” – do you remember Doug Mientkiewicz? It doesn’t work. 1B is a position where superior offense overwrites superior defense. Besides, there are enough “defensive” guys on this team – the Mets need people who can drive in runs…
…the defensive guys on this team arent very good on defense…
I know it doesnt work, just trying to give his idea some credit. It didnt work with Zeile, or Wiggy, or Mientky, etc… so yea.
Just thinking, why wouldn’t the Mets just have moved him there? He shouldn’t have had to ask right?
Good point. Maybe it was suggested to him in some fashion, and he agreed, as opposed to him asking out of the blue.
Also, I remember hearing something about this several months ago, even maybe last season. Maybe I’m imagining things.
Should the Mets minor league teams just not put fielders at 3B and SS? _someone_ has to play there!
Welcome to about 10 days ago, really, this is old news ;)
Early results haven’t been so great either, I think he had 3 errors in his first week there, but you figure he’s inexperianced and needs to learn the position and all. But it makes too much sense not to try him there, better then relegating him to a Corner OF or First Base because of Wright blocking him where he is.
Don’t get onthe poor guy. He is just a replacement. You can’t expect him to preform up to Matt’s level here in the Major Blogs.
I know its premature as we do not have enough of a sample size yet on argenis and Muphy is still a while away from shea(citi) but i think omar is going to have to bite those last 2 years on castillos contract if these kids keep producing. At least we have good options to keep the youth movement going. I believe easly is gone after this year so we may see castillo and argenis as a platoon in 2b at citifield. Idk but i like that this kid took initiative and gave himself a better shot at making the show.
argenis is a switch hitter, right? Is Dan a righty?
Argenis Reyes has a career .676 OPS in the minors, and just a .641 OPS this season with the big club. His .308 average looks nice, but it’s an empty average for sure. This guy is actually less productive than Luis Castillo offensively, and based off of his track record it would be unreasonable to expect him to even match Castillo’s career .724 OPS. He’s a bench player, a defensive replacement and nothing more.
Argenis Reyes is going to become the new Ruben Gotay around here.
At least he plays good defense. Which is more than you can say about Castillo or Gotay. Agreed that he’s not likely to be more than a utility infielder.
Yeah, he’s definitely a nice guy to keep around. Speedy and excellent with the glove. I’m just afraid that people are expecting wayyyy too much of him now.
Fingers crossed for Church’s evaluation today. Regardless of the results, the Mets still need to make a move for a corner OF. Rather than trading the whole system, I vote for obtaining Casey Blake, who, as a right-handed bat, is on pace for almost 100 rbis this year.
If Church is cleared to play and we made the move for Blake, I’d love to see this lineup:
Reyes
Easley / A. Reyes
Beltran
Delgado (hopefully he can continue to hit)
Wright
Church
Blake
Schneider / Castro
Blake also has experience at 3B, so he could be used to give Wright some rest at times.
I would have preferred:
Reyes
Easley
Wright
Beltran
Nady, Bay, Holliday, or Guillen
Delgado
Church
Castro
Pitcher
How sick would that be?…….New Phillie Mr. Blanton..meet new Met Mr. (fill in the blank). Last I read the Royals wanted 2 prospects for Guillen so he too is over priced. I don’t know how Omar can pull off a trade for someone to “MAN!!!!!” LF. It would have just been great to dwarf the Phillies (so called) thunder with Blanton with an even bigger move. I hope Omar pulls one of these “where did that come from” moves to finally put us over the top.
Until further notice…In Omar we trust!!
Is Blake a competent outfielder?
While he’s not a goldglove OF, he’s definitely an upgrade over Tatis. In 238 games played as an OF, Blake has 11 errors.
Murphy’s numbers as a second baseman would not be bad at all assuming he can field the position. Castillo’s days are numbered even with his contract, I don’t believe the guy will ever be 100% health wise.
Agreed. His time away from the line-up has proven we can do without him. Specially in the years ahead.
Our year end prospect rankings are going to look so different this year.
Hope you’re right. The verdict is still out on whether Carp, Evans, Murphy, Niese are legitimate solid big-league prospects. None of them have a lot of upside, and none of them were ranked higher than like the 80th best prospect at the beginning of the season.
And I hope Martinez can stay healthy and really start tearing up AA…
Anyone know what our prospect rankings are? I thought they were all like 80-120 except for Martinez but not really sure.
Last time I saw any list, which was about a month ago, the only one, other than F-mart, who was even on the radar was Niese and he was like in the 110’s. Most scouts seem to think he’s a back-end of the rotation starter.
Projections seemed to have kicked up to mid-rotation starter, since he’s young, excelling against advanced competition, and has maintained a solid K-rate while inducing a lot of ground balls.
The only younger pitcher in the EL with a better ERA than Niese is Chris Tillman. He’s also second in IP.
Prospect rankings are good to know in the aspect of evaluating the “overall” strenght of a team’s minor league system but you shouldn’t go crazy and use the rankings as the end all. How many first round picks and totted prospects actually went on to become “Great” major leagueres? I’m sure you’ll be surprised that it’s not as a sure thing as you would expect.
Take Mike Piazza. He was one of the lowest ranked propects and thanks in part to Tommy Lasorda’s relationship he made it to the bigs. I’m sure there have been many, many low ranked propects that have gone on to have great major league careers and some even Hall Of Fame careers. You can’t just say, “well, he’s ranked number 84 so he’ll never be that great at the major league level.”
Take the rankings for what they’re worth but don’t use them as a “Bible” to predict majore league careers.
I agree in general, that measuring potential and ranking prospects is a very inexact science. But it’s easy for Mets fans or even members of Mets organization to be subjective and overrate prospects. I was just curious to see some objective measures of our prospects…without subscribing to Baseball America or whatever.
Another very interesting thing from that article: Brandon Knight, who the Mets signed in May. — 11 games (5 starts), 1.60 ERA and 49 Ks (and only 10 BB) in 39.1 IP.
Such a small sample size, but it would be really nice to continue.
Dylan Owen had a great 78 innings last season, but hasn’t really repeated.
Well, Owen also jumped from rookie ball to Hi-A. For a guy like Owen that relies on command and pitch variation rather than pure stuff, a drop off is to be expected against more advanced hitters. The good news for him is that he continues to develop a solid 4-pitch arsenal, while maintaining a solid K/9 and excellent K/BB (4.0). The true test for him will be against AA hitters, either toward the end of this season or the beginning of next.
the thing is carp is overrated. his defense sucks and this is not just a small slump anymore, i prefer delgado for three years and then ike davis taking over, as for reese havens, whoever says 3 years, just to clear it up, he will be in high a or binghamton, and then he could be called up or something, then in triple a, and called up in 2010, playing full time in 2011, anyway, i think that if they really want dan murphy, they make reese havens a cather, then you have a catcher like russel martin and a gun for an arm.
He really is overrated. We’d be better off signing a FA for 2 years to play 1B. Or trading for a Chad Tracy type guy and plopping him at 1st. (just an example)
Why not try out Nick Evans at first?
I’m not sold on Evans. He needs some more work. Great plate discipline, but still can’t hit major league hitting.
But I mean over Carp. it seems like people only consider Carp when it comes to options at first base.
That’s foolish of those who only consider Carp. Evans has posted excellent numbers at AA and he’s really yet to learn to pull the ball- most of his XBH are to the opposite field. If he fills out and increases his bat speed a bit, he ought to be able to turn on pitches and boost his power accordingly.
But then again, if he could give us a .250-.270 average and 15 hr’s I’d be happy.
Trade him for Keppinger! :D
Kepp is so overrated around here. His OPS+ sits at a less than stellar 93 right now, which is actually only 4 points better than Castillo. Unless Keppinger learns to take a walk or develops some power (both unlikely at 28), he’s a replacement-level IF.
