preGame: Mets vs. Phillies (Game One)
By Mike Nichols - Jul 22, 2008 6:00 pm

The Game:

The Mets (53-46) begin a three-game series against the Phillies (53-46) tonight at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm.

The Lineup:

…marlon in left field makes no sense…he is terrible defensively and blanton is better versus lefties than righties…although, anderson has two hits in three career at-bats versus blanton…

The Pitchers:

LHP Johan Santana (8-7, 3.10 ERA) starts for the Mets. In three career starts against the Phillies, Santana is 1-0 with a 2.75 ERA.

RHP Joe Blanton (5-12, 4.96 ERA) starts for the Phillies. Blanton is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two career starts (15.0 IP) versus the Mets.

How To Catch It:

Tonight’s game can be seen locally on SNY and heard locally on WFAN.

The Bleachers:

For a live chat, head over to The Hot Foot Bleachers.

…without question this is the biggest start of santana’s short tenure with the Mets…santana has pitched well, and has been no better or no worse than i expected, but like many Mets fans, i’m still waiting for that signature performance from him, let’s hope tonight starts a string of those performances…

…just as santana needs to step up, the bullpen needs to do the same…the Phillies have dominated the Mets pen since this rivalry began to take shape in 2006…in my opinion, the Mets bullpen is the key to this series…

…enjoy, and as always, Let’s Go Mets

Ugh, I can’t agree more. I looked at Marlon Anderson’s name and just let out a big sigh.

Let’s hope he ends up hitting three home runs so we all look stupid.

  2. ASod1975 says:

I’ll take a couple singles and no balls hit his way for 500, Alex.

  3. chicagometfan says:

Tatis was 17 for 40 with 4hr’s and 12 RBI to start July. Then he went 0-4 and has been benched the last couple of games. That makes no sense at all.

  4. Displaced Mets Fan says:

Agreed — funny to be saying this (never thought I would have been saying this three months ago), but would much rather have Tatis in there…. or maybe even Evans

    • miker94 says:

agreed, as much as i like anderson, he is the worst bat off the bench, other than cancel or evans of course. really should be tatis. i just don’t get it

  5. miker94 says:

i hate to be the hater, but i’m most worried about santana. yeah i said it…he has yet to show that he is THE ace of this staff, and tonight is the night he must do just that. and i’m a bit worried that he won’t. it’s just the mets luck that he cant. it’s just always been that way for the Mets. hope to God I’m wrong!

  6. scooter says:

does anyone know where cerrone is? he hasnt posted anything in a long time

  7. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Here we go….

    LET’S GO METS !!

    • MyaGirl says:

This is what baseball is all about!!! This is what we have been waiting for all year. Remember on those cold January nights when we couldn’t wait for these types of games?

      Johan Vs. Blanton
      Phillies Vs. Mets

      EVERYBODY ALL TOGETHER NOW!!!!

      LET’S GO METS
      LET’S GO METS

  8. 911nafstem says:

Why in the hell is Marlon Anderson starting?

  9. EliPorter says:

you just cant throw out marlon anderson in a game of this magnitude… does anyone remember how much chris aguila’s defense burnt us in the july 4 game vs the phils (santana started). i guess endy and carlos cover a crapload of ground and compensate for marlons below average defense, and the phils have a bunch of letfies, but i think tatis makes so much more sense tonight…. lets hope marlon surprises us with a nice 2-4, 2B, and 2 rbi’s

  10. PeterDragon says:

I agree that I don’t get the Marlon Anderson start, unless its the feeling he still has issues with Phillies. His bat has been slow, but more importantly his defense, especially in the outfield has been awful.
I guess there is little choice.

  11. anonymii says:

Finally.. i hate off days before a big series.

  12. MadMike5 says:

Why the hell does Manuel start Anderson at LF? He can’t field to save his life. It’s a surprise every time the ball is hit to left. Tatis is clearly the better player here. Marlon Anderson should never play the outfield every again. He is a good pinch hitter. THATS IT! He defends himself playing first base. But in the outfield he is atrocious. I really hope that he shuts me up in this series against the Phillies making some good catches and hitting a few homeruns or key hits with runners on base.

  13. ReyesSteals says:

How is Marlon starting tonight he cant hit and hes a butcher in left field. Did Manuel watch the game on sunday and see that marlon cost the mets two runs?

  14. meatloaf says:

Understand the whole leftie righty thing but is this a joke with Marlon in the lineup again? Does he really give you a better chance to win than Tatis or Evans? Why is Evans even up here if he never plays. You better be right Jerry or I swear………….actually I will do nothing but I’ll be pissed.

  15. mex84 says:

    Lets go Mets! Pennant fever!

  16. 911nafstem says:

I’m not even worried about Marlon’s bat, it’s his defense, he may be the worst outfielder in baseball. The Mets don’t need to give Santana an excuse.

    • syphilis says:

Any word on who will be acquire to play corner outfields so we can stop with these fill ins and holding our breathe?

  17. chicagometfan says:

Sometimes even stupid moves work. Like taking a card with an 19 in blackjack and getting a 2. The move worked but it was still very low percentage and dumb. I also hope Marlon does something great tonight but Tatis is clearly the better move right now for defense average ,power and RBI’s

  18. rM teM says:

Hey, how come Ramon’s name isn’t highlighted?!

  19. scooter says:

haha awesome replies for cerrone MIA, any one of them could be true

  20. sincekindergarten says:

Why is Anderson starting? Perhaps this sentence by Mike can explain it . . . “although, anderson has two hits in three career at-bats versus blanton…”

It’s nowhere near a decent sample size, but it’s all I’ve got to possibly explain it.

    • chicagometfan says:

I’ll take Tatis with 4 HR’s,12 rbi’s and a 377 average in July with no career at bats versus Blanton over Anderson’s 2 singles in 3 at bats no rbi’s against Blanton

  21. syphilis says:

    Anderson OWNS Blanton!!!!!!

  22. khmustache says:

    mex dresses like my grandpa…

  23. hyperion4 says:

I can’t believe the Nats practically gave away Jon Rauch to the D-Backs. The Mets weren’t going to get him, but the D-Backs are a postseason threat. Jim Bowden’s days have got to be numbered . . . he’s retaliating for his impending dismissal by giving the team away . . .

    • ASod1975 says:

I agree there, especially Colorado seems to be wanting more for Fuentes, who is older and a free agent after the season. Bowden is pretty clueless. I believe he wanted Pelfrey and Milledge for Chad Cordero last season (or something like that), and now he gives Rauch away for a bag of magic beans.

  24. wa2k99 says:

Burrell batting third for them. Hmm

  25. rM teM says:

What’s with Keith? someone goofing in his ear?

  26. wa2k99 says:

    2 down.

  27. khmustache says:

    man i hate burrell

  28. miker94 says:

how bad is it that you can already tell that santana is not on his game tonight? gonna be a long night

  29. miker94 says:

has santana EVER had a 1-2-3 inning for the mets? i don’t think so.

  30. khmustache says:

    damn

  31. KL15 says:

One run down and the pitch count is going up.

  32. miker94 says:

i know 1-0 is nothing, but santana is the worst pitcher on this staff lately. in a tough game, i’d rather have anyone but him pitching. he gives up more hits than my grandmother. unreal

  33. I don’t have television, did those hits look like cheapies that found holes or were they solid?

    • khmustache says:

solid…howard had the best one, but the other two were nice groundballs through the holes

  34. wa2k99 says:

    Great already down 1

  35. dwright57 says:

3 two out hits?? how about santana throws some pitches up and in??? stop throwing over the plate bro

  36. mex84 says:

    Lets blast Blanton!

  37. gipper82475 says:

    Our non-ace continues his mediocritude.

  38. KL15 says:

I’m so worried that the Mets are going to start hacking at everything.

  39. wa2k99 says:

They were very cheap, Howard had a decent liner.

  40. KFS says:

Santana stanks, trade him for a bag of balls.

  41. skylog says:

i hate this start. johan getting hit. reyes popping up.

  42. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Endy found that hole…..

  43. 911nafstem says:

The Mets are due to hit the Dough Boy. I think he has a 17 inning scoreless streak or something against them.

  44. kevinmets31 says:

Santana better step it up and earn the 25 million a year he’s making to be a DOMINANT ACE and win some big games.

  45. skylog says:

can they just crush this guy, come on. he has been getting hit all year long, i don’t care what he did in two starts over a few years. do they want it or not? show something and get all over him.

  46. 911nafstem says:

I hate Shane Victorino, he has the face of someone you want to punch

  47. KL15 says:

My God, this man is paid how much money?

  48. EliPorter says:

will the real santana please stand up? or has he been up for the last 20 starts?

  49. skylog says:

the crowd was so jacked at the start. johan had to come out and go 1-2-3. instead, he doesn’t, gives up a run on three two out hits. mets go down quickly. johan now getting behind people. this is not the way this game needed to be started.

hopefully, they can all get it going, need that 1-2-3 with the bottom up. lol, i spoke too soon. another 2 out run? i sure hope noe.

    • gipper82475 says:

For the life of me, I dunno how this hack won two Cy Youngs.

He better get his act together before the Shea faithful get ugly.

      • skylog says:

i just don’t think we got, or are seeing, the johan we have seen the past few seasons. i remember watching him just school people for a whole game, and to be honest, i just have not really seen that.

i am hoping there are some things going on that will figure themselves out, but it does seem, and i am worried, that his fastball is down.

  50. kevinmets31 says:

Santana serving up meatballs you got to be kidding.

  51. dwright57 says:

Santana needs to throw some pitches besides strikes……he needs to “waste” some pitches……..i dont mean change ups either…..These guys just pick a pitch change or FB and wait on in……throw something up and in!!!

    • Gina says:

This is like the story of our pitching staff. Do they know you’re allowed to throw more than 2 pitches.

  52. HangingSlider says:

Does anyone know why the first baseman switches baseballs on the way to the dugout everytime he records a putout? Always see that, but never know why.

  53. kevinmets31 says:

Yeah they surely haven’t looked fooled at any pitches so far. This scares me because although he’s only given up 1 run, the Phils are hitting the ball hard off of him.

  54. jimyager says:

TYPICAL SANTANA!!! Unless the METS can get something going against Blanton, we are in trouble. LETS GO METS !!!

  55. KFS says:

Until Santana throw 20 shutouts in a season, he’s not worth whatever he’s paid!

  56. mex84 says:

Seems like Johan is trying to hard to be a LH Pedro, circa 2008!

  57. 911nafstem says:

Can we wait for the Mets to lose before we hang Santana?

    • skylog says:

not hanging, i still am hoping and rooting.

man, can they hit something hard somewhere, not in the air?

  58. kevinmets31 says:

We’ll give him a couple more innings before we decide to hang him.

  59. 911nafstem says:

This better not be like the start against Ponson when the Mets continued against all odds not to hit him.

  60. skylog says:

    go ramon, show that speed!

  61. khmustache says:

that might be he first time i’ve seen shrek get an infield hit

  62. KL15 says:

Sorry everybody, I can’t watch. Santana is throwing up meatballs and the lineup is getting owned by JOE BLANTON!!! My heart just can’t take this.

    • khmustache says:

didn’t you give up on the last game too?

      • KL15 says:

I didn’t think they could come back, but I kept watching. The Reds aren’t quite the power threat the Phillies are. Besides, I really wanted Santana to do well because I fear Maine will get rocked tomorrow because of his control problems lately. Don’t get me wrong, I still want this team to win, but I have to eat something for dinner and don’t want to throw it back up.

        • khmustache says:

i know…just giving you a hard time, i get games like that from time to time as well

  63. Dafatone80 says:

Look, Johan’s going to be here a long, long time. He’s been very good this year. If he had even poor run support, he’d be 11-5, and look quite good.

And if you’re not happy with his performance so far, Minnesota to New York is quite an adjustment. Look at how Beltran fared his first year with the Mets. He flat out sucked. Since then, he’s been at worst, very good. And great in ‘06.

We’re going to have to give Johan more than half a season before we make judgments.

    • mex84 says:

Good point, they seem like the same personality type. It might take him some time to lose the jitters and start pitching with some cahones!(spelling)

  64. metsforever says:

The Mets should have picked this guy up just so he couldn’t pitch against them again. He absolutely owns them, no matter who the hitters are. And he pretty much sucks. Go Figure

    • therealsince86 says:

I would have never traded that kind of talent for him.

    • Dafatone80 says:

He’s decidedly mediocre, and a flyball pitcher. He’d do well in Shea.

Not sure how he’d do in Citi Field, which is the important part.

Actually, that’s a concern of mine. Citi Field’s going to have the wind blowing out, right? Santana, Ollie, and Maine are all fly ball pitchers. Not sure if Ollie’ll be back next year, but this could be interesting, to say the least.

  65. Steve in DC says:

    2 out HR.

  66. wa2k99 says:

Well done. Now we have to solve Blanton

  67. 911nafstem says:

    Don’t get picked off Jose

  68. kevinmets31 says:

Reyes needs to reach home this inning.

  69. 911nafstem says:

I wouldn’t steal, it’s not like they’re facing John Smoltz here

  70. gipper82475 says:

    Utley just pulled an Uggla.

  71. kevinmets31 says:

    Let’s go D-Wright

  72. 911nafstem says:

Wouldn’t it be amazing if the Mets got, you know, runS here?

  73. gipper82475 says:

Nice David, dunno about sending Endy there with no out.

    • almar1965 says:

It was the right move with a speedy Endy. You have to make the other team make a perfect play. They just happened to make a perfectly executed relay throw.

      • gipper82475 says:

I guess, but 2nd and third, no out aint bad. – Heck, he’d have scored on Beltran’s grounder to Howard.

        • therealsince86 says:

We are back to agreeing there Gip. There is no way with Blanton in trouble that you send him. In fact there would have been more pressure on him and he may have pitched Beltran differently.

        • almar1965 says:

I understand, but you have to be aggressive early in the game. It is not like Castro was running. Late in the game it would have been a horrible call.

        • almar1965 says:

          Guess it doesn’t matter. LOL!

    • Dafatone80 says:

If you’re going to err, err aggressively.

That being said… I agree. Blanton hasn’t gotten a man out this inning. Don’t help him out.

      • therealsince86 says:

exactly. The guy had pressure on him with giving up the hits and nevermind. GO DELGADO.

  74. 911nafstem says:

    good try

  75. Hernandez_1B says:

These 3rd base coaches for the Mets are killing me. You send him with 2 outs…..NOT 1. jeez

  76. therealsince86 says:

Who the hell sent a guy with 0 outs? If you have you 8 hitter coming up then send him but with your 4th hitter?

  77. dwright57 says:

F that……lets try and score as many runs as we can…..pound them!!!

  78. therealsince86 says:

Yeah and wors case you have 2nd and 3rd with no outs. That run WOULD have most likely scored on that play to Howard.

  79. Now lets see that 400 footer pull a little bit to the right field, Delgado.

  80. skylog says:

so frustrating. we haven’t been sending runners when we thought we should have. then we send a runner, finally, and he gets gunned…..only to see a ground ball that would have made it 2-1

    blast.

come on carlos, get him home.

  81. dwright57 says:

    Blanton is fat…..I hate him…….

    I hate him because he’s a philly……..

  82. khmustache says:

    DELGADO!!!!!!!

  83. dwright57 says:

Hahahahaha………………….who wanted to cut Carlos Delgado???

Most of you on here or morons

  84. el_giacomo says:

    YEAH! DELGADO! YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  85. I shall name my baby Carlos!

  86. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Carlos Delgado is the MAN.

Woo-Hoo! I just knew after that frist at bat, he was gonna send one out tonight….

  87. mex84 says:

    Delgotit again!

  88. 911nafstem says:

Carlos, you are really making me eat my words, and they taste delicious

  89. skylog says:

yes! just imagine a month+ ago, who would have thought. great job carlos!

now….that said, johan MUST MUST make quick work of them next inning. none of this letting them right back garbage.

  90. fsolomon75 says:

Great at-bat, coming back from being down 0-2. Let’s hope Santana can make it stick.

  91. Prismo says:

    DEL-GONE!

  92. ninohernes says:

    Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    LETS GO METS!!!!

  93. 0h the ag0ny says:

    ON FIRE!!!

  94. el_giacomo says:

Uh-oh. Just realized that Angel Hernandez is one of the umps for this series. Not good. Worst ump ever, IMO. He’s on 1B tonight…which way do they rotate? Will he be the home plate ump tomorrow, or 2nd base?

    • khmustache says:

crap…i really really hate that guy

      • el_giacomo says:

Yeah he’s the worst. Always seems to stick it to the Mets…for years….hope he doesn’t get home plate this series….if he rotates to 2B tomorrow, then he won’t get behind the plate…otherwise, he will be the HP ump tmr…scary to think about…

  95. BlueCapsOnly says:

    That was a nice little 9-iron Carlos…Yesssssss!

  96. metsfanatic says:

Now Santana has to STEP UP!

  97. 911nafstem says:

Come on Johan, don’t pull a Glavine here

  98. el_giacomo says:

Gameday is saying there is an On-Field Delay…anything major?

  99. bvaz says:

man, he is so locked in. I hope this lasts.
blanton has junk. only took one time through the lineup to figure him out. let’s keep the pressure on.

  100. mex84 says:

Whats the delay on the field?

  101. almar1965 says:

Now let’s see Santana hold the lead and not give it back.

Any thoughts on whether he gives those runs up for a tied game?

  102. Nightlife says:

Man, WTF is up with Delgado? I didn’t think he had months like this left in him.

60 pitches for Blanton through 3.

    • mex84 says:

Whats crazy is he only a few RBI’s off the ‘06 pace and actually hitting for a higher average.

  103. Darth Manuel says:

If he continues producing like this he deserves to get his option picked up…

    Delgado in 09

    • skylog says:

going to be interesting for sure. it is a lot of money and you have to think tex is going to be on their minds.

    • 911nafstem says:

I think they should count their lucky stars and move on

    • bvaz says:

ha. I was thinking about that too. a little early but after him and giambi, there is not much left.

      • ExileInLA says:

Nothing wrong with calling his agent and saying “We won’t pick up the option, but Carlos is high on our list after Texeira — let’s talk about what he’d want to stay…”

        • skylog says:

i would love to see tex, but i think it is a done deal. i think the yankees are going to overpay and overpay to get him no matter what.

  104. Career strikeout #1500. Love this.

  105. 911nafstem says:

The Phillies lineup seems a lot shorter with Burrell batting 3rd

  106. khmustache says:

classy move by victorino…letting santana soak up the ovation a little bit…i still hate philly though

  107. nysportsfan16 says:

    Congrats Johan

  108. jimyager says:

    OH MY DELGADO !!!!!!

  109. appleinahat says:

why did charlie manuel get ejected?

    • bvaz says:

delgado had a check swing with 2 strikes that was called no swing. probably should have been strike 3.
manual argued between innings and got tossed.

    • nysportsfan16 says:

      he argued a check swing

      • khmustache says:

only after the homerun though, and in between innings…i don’t understand it really

        • Dafatone80 says:

Charlie Manuel is a terrible, terrible, awful, horrible, miserable excuse for a manager.

He’s played Victorino in right and Werth in center.

That alone should be a firing. Best part of last year’s collapse was watching the Phillies reward Manuel with an extension.

  110. Two-By-Four says:

Delgado bailed out the third base coach there. There is one thing being aggressive but it’s another thing being foolish. You must be aware of the situation. There is no one out and you have Beltran and a hot Delgado coming up. The play at the plate wasn’t even close. It was executed well but even if it wasn’t there was some leeway for the Phils to throw Chavez out. You also have to take into account that the play was coming from left field and Rollins has a strong arm and the catcher is facing the runner so he can block the plate. But you have to love what Delgado did.

  111. Two-By-Four says:

I hope Marlon can get going and be a potent bat off the bench again.

  112. Nightlife says:

Nice hit by Johan. Now keep making him work Jose.

    • Nightlife says:

      Jinx.

      :(

    • skylog says:

i agree, but i would almost rather jose just lead off in the next inning there. would have loved that hit in his first at bat though….but i just want them to blow this up

  113. nysportsfan16 says:

where was Johan’s hit I missed it

  114. nysportsfan16 says:

I cringe every time David Wright makes a throw from 3rd

  115. khmustache says:

i love dwright, but his arm makes me nervous sometimes…at what point in his career do the mets move him to first i wonder

  116. wa2k99 says:

    DOUBLE PLAY!!!

  117. nysportsfan16 says:

double play right as Kevin Burkhardt was talking how Rollins can hit Santana, I love it!!!!!!!!!

  118. Steve in DC says:

    5-pitch inning?

    LETS’S GO METS.

  119. Nightlife says:

    YES!

    Johan looked pumped!

  120. almar1965 says:

A complete game domination by Johan would be a nice gift to Mets fans. LOL!

  121. Darth Manuel says:

whats so special about this Blanton kid. Average everything. looks like a 3rd starter at best

    • AlouIsNasty says:

there is nothing special about him, no one describes him as special. he is described as a workhorse/innings eater

  122. nysportsfan16 says:

I love when Keith does the Sovereign Back 5th inning recap

  123. skylog says:

didn’t dig that inning. don’t want to have the middle of the order go so quietly in these games.

  124. Prismo says:

“Santana has now thrown 12 straight strikes…” -Gary

    *Santana throws a pitch*

    “And there’s a ball.”

    Oh Gary, the living jinx!

    • khmustache says:

death, taxes and the cohen jinx

    • Nightlife says:

The way his voice changed between saying “Satana throws a pitch” to “And there’s a ball.” was hilarious.

Speaking of Santana, he’s throwing pretty great.

  125. wa2k99 says:

    Johan pitching like we want.

  126. MetsFan4Decades says:

Santana settled down nicely after that first innning.

Note to all you Santana doubters who were down on him after the top of the first…..

    • tengobotas says:

Id like to see stats on his first inning vs everything else because it seems like every game i see him pitch im always biting me nails in the first.

  127. 911nafstem says:

I hope Santana stays in for at least 8 innings

  128. Nightlife says:

How the hell do you do that if your Blanton? Hopefully they take advantage of this.

  129. khmustache says:

    SHREK!!!!!

  130. gipper82475 says:

    SHREK!

    Huuuuge insurance.

  131. Steve in DC says:

    BLASTRO!!!!!!!!

  132. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Ramon, baby! It’s outta here….

And if they hold this lead, won’t have to worry about the health of Wags shoulder tonight…..

  133. wa2k99 says:

    OH BABY!!!!

  134. el_giacomo says:

    SHREK! SHREK! SHREK!

  135. KFS says:

How about Jerry with his gut feeling going with Ramon against a RHP?

  136. Hernandez_1B says:

Blastro strikes again. Man is Burrell a horrible outfielder. Any average ourfielder makes the jump and catch

  137. ReyesMets says:

Quite honestly, I understand that Castro is not in the best shape (and, therefore, part of his incredible production is a result of the fact that he only plays when fresh and against pitchers that suit him–lefties, etc.), but he is SOOOO much better than Schneider that he should be playing at least 4 out of every 7 games…

    Thoughts?

    • Steve in DC says:

      I concur. I’d like a 5-2 split.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Castro has arthritis of the back. Playing him better than 30% is a recipe for the DL. That’s what happened end of last season…

Castro was also quoted as saying he’s perfectly happy with his 2M a year to be the backup catcher. Doesn’t want to platoon, per say, doesn’t want to be a starting catcher for anyone.
      I guess he likes those 4 or 5 days off a week….

      • ReyesMets says:

True. That’s why I was cautious in saying he should be the “starter” in the traditional sense. But his production is light years beyond Schneider’s and I, at the very least, think he should be playing against select righty starters that suit him (Blanton types) and obviously against lefties

    • tengobotas says:

I thought the reason he didnt play more was due to back problems.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

That’s one reason. Second is what other reason I stated. Gary talked about that the other night…..

  138. wa2k99 says:

Whoa!!!! He better not have done that on purpose

  139. X-Man says:

This guy just doesn’t cease to amaze me! Every time you put him in the line-up the guy does something to help this team win. Too bad he can’t stay healthy long enough to play full time.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Oh yeah. Best backup catcher in the league.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

And actually, I was agreeing with you. Looking at my comment, that could have been taken otherwise…

  140. 911nafstem says:

Could you imagine if Castro was in shape? He probably wouldn’t be on the Mets.

  141. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Keith ‘Pitch count, Gary’?
    Gary: ‘78′
    Keith: ‘Go nine’

Wouldn’t that be the answer to the question:

When are we gonna see the dominant Santana we all expected???

He’s just looking better and better as he goes along. Changing up his pitches, executing them….

  142. khmustache says:

    keith calling out the ballboy…nice

  143. wa2k99 says:

The only Phillie to get a hit since the third inning is the pitcher!

  144. 911nafstem says:

    I HATE Shane Victorino

    • Dafatone80 says:

There was that rumor that the Phillies would trade Victorino, Happ, and two big prospects for Holliday and Fuentes. I want them to do it. Victorino’s a fantastic ballplayer.

      • khmustache says:

don’t know if i want holliday calling cbp home though

        • Dafatone80 says:

To me, worth it if it means an OF of Burrell, Werth, and Holliday. Werth is okay in center and Holliday’s not a terrible corner OF, but that’s still a pretty weak defense.

Also, if the Phils have to give up three big prospects in the process.

        • khmustache says:

agreed, but you’re looking at rollins/burrel/utley/howard/holliday/werth as 1-6…that’s pretty scary

    • el_giacomo says:

I hate Ace Chutley more, but Victorino is up there…

      • Steve in DC says:

        I actually don’t hate Chutley. Dude’s a fantastic player. It’s the a-hole players I hate.

See: Penny, Brad vs Green, Shawn.

    • 911nafstem says:

He just looks like a guy who would always owe someone money

  145. wa2k99 says:

He’s coming out for the eighth!

  146. foul bunt strikeout says:

boy, Victorino really brings it against the Mets.

Someone please give him sweet chin music

  147. Backman_Backer says:

Totally off topic but can someone tell what kind of necklace does Jose Reyes wear?

  148. MetsFan4Decades says:

Nice swing, Endy……but would have like to see that triple.

  149. tengobotas says:

3rd base coach is killin me.

  150. MetsFan4Decades says:

    How is that even possible.

  151. 911nafstem says:

Okay, NOW I’m having a problem with the 3rd base coach

  152. khmustache says:

    son of a…

  153. skylog says:

    unreal…..why?

  154. Dafatone80 says:

Make that decision going home once… shame on…

    Yeah, stupid call.

  155. gipper82475 says:

    Is aquayo on crack?

    TWO runs he’s cost us.

  156. therealsince86 says:

Ok this is completely stupid. Fire the 3rd base coach. You don’t have to be agressive here.

  157. 911nafstem says:

Is it really that difficult to be a competent 3rd base coach? Where’s Cookie Rojas?

  158. EV says:

Seriously what the hell is this third base coach doing.

  159. kendychavez says:

so, so dumb. flat out incompetence.

  160. Nightlife says:

Aguayo kind of sucks at coaching 3rd base.

  161. wildgeneral says:

Why, why, why are we trying to score with ZERO outs and the heart of the batting order on deck?!?!

Aggressive = good. Stupidity = bad.

  162. skylog says:

that is horrible coaching there fellas. you can run wright, maybe they bring the infield in, there are so many reasons, but most of all……he was out by a mile.

  163. 911nafstem says:

That 3rd base coach better pray the Mets win this game.

  164. therealsince86 says:

Those 2 runs could come up huge with either a bum Wagner or a non closer closing.

  165. 911nafstem says:

    D. 3rd Base Coach

  166. Backman_Backer says:

He is having a bad game tonight but I would much rather have a risk taker than a lame duck third base coach

    • therealsince86 says:

I would take Donald Duck over this guy right now.

    • 911nafstem says:

I agree with the first time, it took a good throw to get the out, but the second time was pure stupidity, that one run was big

      • therealsince86 says:

Never agree with it with less than 2 outs and the middle of your lineup coming up. There are too many ways that you can score easy.

        • 911nafstem says:

True, but I’m not going to kill a guy for being aggressive early in a game. This time it was needlessly reckless.

      • Two-By-Four says:

Even the first time made no sense and he was out by five to ten feet. It wasn’t even close. In fact neither was close and the there was no one out with the big hitters coming up. Perhaps he was exercising his arm or trying to generate electricity.

    • skylog says:

well, that is the kicker….he has been overly passive when it seems the runners would score and now it looks like he is trying out for the olympic swimming team his arms are turning over so quick

  167. therealsince86 says:

LOL, that was a SOLID popup.

  168. EV says:

Oh come on backman he’s cost us what could be two big freaking runs with NO OUTS.

  169. VelvetFoot says:

The radio guys really don’t like it.

  170. teufelshuffle86 says:

The last two pitching coaches the Mets have faced are Dick Pole and Rich Dubee.

  171. skylog says:

    big run, come on d

  172. wa2k99 says:

Guys, there’s more to being a base coach than send him or keep him.

    • skylog says:

but when you are having trouble (not just tonight) with the runners going home, that should be somewhat paramount i would think

    • EV says:

I understand that but you have to be a little SMARTER when you have no outs and you decide to send a guy home.

  173. MetsFan4Decades says:

Easley = Ron Hunt this game.

    Bases loaded for Tatis here……

  174. wa2k99 says:

Man, that was a solid shot. I’d pinch hit Tatis here

  175. wa2k99 says:

How bad is Charlie Manuel? He doesn’t have a righty going in the pen!

  176. 911nafstem says:

Come on Tatis, you’ve done it twice in an inning, just do it once.

  177. time for some tatis magic

  178. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Sigh…….

  179. that ball was ripped

  180. 911nafstem says:

    damn

  181. wa2k99 says:

    AWWWW!!!!!

  182. 911nafstem says:

Good luck Johan, you’re gonna need it this inning.

  183. therealsince86 says:

    Nice play.

  184. tengobotas says:

I dont dislike Utley(i know i know) but that dive was showboating

  185. teufelshuffle86 says:

    Great play by Utley.

  186. wa2k99 says:

Why am I nervous after that play???

  187. khmustache says:

reyes should’ve dived for that one

  188. dominicanboy08 says:

    santana should complete this game

  189. wa2k99 says:

Is he going to come in for the 9th??? Could it happen???

  190. 911nafstem says:

    of course

  191. MetsFan4Decades says:

    That looked foul to me……

    • metsforever says:

It was, but you cant’ argue too much. Ump doesn’t get super hi def slo mo

  192. wa2k99 says:

    Let him just face Howard

  193. I think ENDY SHOULD RUN THE CATCHER OVER!!!!

  194. teufelshuffle86 says:

    FOUL BALL!!!!!!! COME ON!!!!

  195. metsforever says:

Delgado has to catch that ball. You kind of knew Burrell would do something with the 2nd chance. Bad omen

  196. 911nafstem says:

    WHEW!

  197. MetsFan4Decades says:

That was a solid performance from Johan.

  198. khmustache says:

    whew…nice

  199. Jay says:

    Nice game Johan!!!!!!

  200. Nightlife says:

    Great game by Johan.

Is Wagner going to come in?

  201. wa2k99 says:

I think that’s good with Werth and Feliz leading off. Bring in a righty.

  202. 911nafstem says:

    Who closes?

  203. teufelshuffle86 says:

    There ya go Johan!!!

  204. EV says:

    Yea Johan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  205. metsfanatic says:

Let’s not blow it now boys.

  206. therealsince86 says:

Have to let him come back out

  207. metsforever says:

I wonder if Giuseppe Franco can play corner OF? After all he’s

    GIUSEPPE FRANCO

  208. Koko says:

105 pitches – he should go out for the 9th. . .Manuel talked about a 120 pitch limit for his pitchers not the 100 that Peterson liked.

    Do it. Complete game.

With Wagner ’spasming’ it makes even more sense.

  209. metsforever says:

Could use some tack ons here.

  210. VelvetFoot says:

    Will Santana stay in?

  211. teufelshuffle86 says:

Another run would be nice here.

  212. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Apparently, Wagner not available.

So who comes in to close? Scary….

  213. 911nafstem says:

Burrell runs in the outfield like he’s just been shot

  214. Paperboy says:

Huge stand-up statement game from Johan, even though he didn’t go 9 innings.

8 IP, 2 R, and totally looked in control all night. THIS is what we sold out the farm system for!

LET’S GO METS! THE TEAM TO BEAT!

  215. Koko says:

Not letting Johan pitch the 9th is a mistake. 105 pitches isn’t a lot. Well it is if you are Rick Peterson, but in reality Johan should be able to pitch 120 every so often.

Save the pen and give the team a boost by trying to get a complete game.

    Oh well.

    • 911nafstem says:

I agree, the Mets ace with a complete game win. That’s a statement.

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

With two RH hitters coming up it’s a good move letting dirty pitch the 9th.

      • Koko says:

For Santana it shouldn’t matter if it is a right or a lefty. He’s the ace.

And so much for a righty vs righty advantage Sanchez is supposed to have.

  216. MetsFan4Decades says:

    So it’s Duaner coming in.

  217. wa2k99 says:

Duaner works for me. And keep A-Rey in at second

  218. EV says:

I have no problem with D Sanchez coming in either.

  219. wa2k99 says:

    That was Strike 3!

    • 911nafstem says:

      high

      • Dafatone80 says:

Once upon a time, it was a strike.

For some reason, today’s strike zone is ankles to belt.

Consider the phrase “letter-high strike”. Then look at where the letters are. That’s way higher than any strike zone these days.

        • 911nafstem says:

But the point is everyone knows that it’s not a strike now, so don’t throw it there expecting a strike call.

  220. skylog says:

ugh. of course lead off guy gets on.

  221. wa2k99 says:

We knew it wouldn’t be easy

  222. 911nafstem says:

Johan should’ve completed this game. The Phillies are very resilient and Duaner isn’t used to closing out.

  223. skylog says:

    must get him

  224. metsforever says:

This team just doesn’t freakin go away. What other NL team brings constant worry until the 27th out?

  225. khmustache says:

    crap

  226. skylog says:

throw some junk for at least one. god.

  227. therealsince86 says:

Anyone who said that they trusted Dirty more than Wagner. You got what you wanted.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Like Duaner, but would rather see Wags in the 9th anytime.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

thereal, thats exactly what i was thinking too. There arent too many closers better than Wagner. bottom line!

  228. teufelshuffle86 says:

    Come on Sanchez!

  229. metsforever says:

Santana has to be there to finish this game. No closer. Manuel had to know that. The 9th isn’t the 8th.

  230. wa2k99 says:

    7, 8, 9 coming up.

    • therealsince86 says:

Much rather it be the 6-8. One more hit and we see the top of the order.

  231. metsforever says:

Phils will get 3 this inning

  232. Rauch would have been a nice addition for the mets,

  233. 911nafstem says:

Yup, this is why an ace stays in the game.

  234. wa2k99 says:

He’s trying to get the grounder.

  235. metsforever says:

    Bad times ahead

  236. wa2k99 says:

Uh, maybe Johan should have stayed in

    • el_giacomo says:

right now the only people who would disagree would be the phillies and their fans….

    • therealsince86 says:

MAYBE? This would be heartbreaking. Johan should have stayed in until HE was in trouble.

  237. el_giacomo says:

    craaaappppppppppppppp

  238. ReyesMets says:

    why why why

  239. Rauch didn’t even cost that much

    • wrightstuff08 says:

well, well, well, closing out a game isnt as easy as people think. This should show everyone that Wagner’s job isnt as easy as perceived.

  240. 911nafstem says:

You knew Endy getting thrown out twice wasn’t going to have ramifications.

  241. Arsenal13 says:

I’m glad we paid Johan all that money for us to be babies and not let him pitch more than 105 what a joke

  242. EV says:

Damn Sanchez, don’t know what I was thinking that it would be all right if he came in the ninth.

  243. ugbmets21 says:

wow i seriously want to jump off a bridge. maybe ill just crash my car into a cab!

  244. HangingSlider says:

    Two things:

    1. You cant kill JManuel for making the move, but i would have kept Santana in because he had a short outing his last time out, and the bottom of the lineup was coming up. He can throw more than 100 pitches

    2. Does anyone miss Billy Wagner yet?

  245. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Well, at least we’ve got Smith, who I think stands a much better chance of getting out of this inning than Feliciano.

  246. skylog says:

really, dominate the game, more or less….to have this? if they lose this game, killer.

i was looking for that one johan start and pretty much got, but i think he has to go out there to start the ninth. put a stamp on it, lead us into the rest of the series. now we have this.

if smith gives up the slam, i can almost smell it, i am going to freak

  247. Eggman says:

Why? Because Santana couldn’t pitch the damn 9th! This is insane. Take out your ace who’s cruising, you don’t have your closer available! Ugh, I’m disgusted.

  248. Arsenal13 says:

I still like Smith here he’s been solid all year cleaning up messes by the rest of the bullpen

  249. 911nafstem says:

    This one’s gonna hurt

  250. wa2k99 says:

He’s staying in until Utley comes up.

  251. MetsFan4Decades says:

You have got to be kidding me….

  252. 911nafstem says:

Wow, the Mets are going to lose this game. Un-fcking-real

    • skylog says:

at this point, i will be shocked if they don’t. nah, who cares about those two run?ners who got gunned? or the fact that johan got taken out?

i am so ticked off now, i keep getting messages from all my friends.

  253. Arsenal13 says:

What a joke of a team I’m so disgusted by Manuel right now

  254. khmustache says:

    COME ON!!!!

  255. wa2k99 says:

    We’re done

  256. ReyesMets says:

I would much rather schoenweis than feliciano…not even close

  257. gipper82475 says:

Wow. They blow this,….I just dunno.

  258. EV says:

Can someome please explain to me what Reyes was doing there?

  259. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

    Nothing’s ever easy, is it?

  260. fsolomon75 says:

How do you not at least get the sure out at first?

  261. teufelshuffle86 says:

    COME ON REYES!!!

  262. 911nafstem says:

This one’s on Santana, I don’t care what anyone says, 105 pitches, division rival, first place on the line, Wagner hurt, his ass should be out there.

  263. Arsenal13 says:

Manuel is a bumb…I still haven’t heard of a good reason why Johan didn’t come out for the 9th

  264. gipper82475 says:

HOW THE HELL DO YOU TAKE OUT SNATANA WHO WAS CRUISING IF YOU KNOW WAGS IS UNAVAILABLE?

  265. Steve in DC says:

If we lose, sad to say, it’s on Reyes and Aguayo.

  266. j_k says:

    Boy, talk about a stomachache

  267. AzMetsFan says:

    Un-F’n-Real!

How do you take Santana out of the game unless he was in trouble? How How How???? At least let him start the ninth.

    The Mets just fell apart

  268. kbh218 says:

Wow…being a Mets fan is painful. I can’t believe they are going to lose this game.

  269. miker94 says:

    game over, mets lose

  270. therealsince86 says:

Hey, lets see, Feliciano walks in the next run then gives up a 2 run single. Who’s got bets?

  271. MetsFan4Decades says:

Yup. Knew those two outs at home plate were going come back to haunt us.

    Come on Feliciano….

  272. 911nafstem says:

Great the 90 Asian guy that only hits homers against the Mets.

  273. Andrew says:

    This is insanity.

I can’t believe this is happening.

    This is insanity.

  274. Arsenal13 says:

People to blame for this loss…

    Manuel
    Aguayo
    Reyes
    Sanchez
    Santana

  275. dave27 says:

    Have some faith.

  276. Koko says:

    Fire Jerry!

105 freakin’ pitches. What is he thinking. Let him pitch 15 more innings. It’s mind boggling. He did a similar thing in Philly. The game was tied, but Santana was only at 95 after 8 and he gets pulled for Sanchez too. And Sanchez looses it.

  277. skylog says:

if he walks him, no, goes 3-2…………….arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  278. teufelshuffle86 says:

Great, Taguchi up. He hasn’t done anything against the Mets.

  279. 911nafstem says:

This guy might as well be Ted Williams right now.

  280. gipper82475 says:

Love to have those two runs back, Aguayo!

  281. Backman_Backer says:

the govenor in for the save

  282. almar1965 says:

If the Mets lose this, it is ALL on Manuel’s head for taking out Santana who was still strong in the 8th and had a decent pitch count.

  283. MudvilleNine says:

Jerry must go!!! He couldnt manage a lemonade stand!

  284. khmustache says:

    no outs…

  285. Arsenal13 says:

    Manuel is an absolute joke

  286. 911nafstem says:

Thanks Santana. Once again, just pitching well enough to lose. But hey, you’re era went down.

  287. dave27 says:

Unreal. You don’t come back from this.

Between Santana and Manuel, whomever decided he should come out…I never want to see again.

  288. gipper82475 says:

    Jerry Manuel = MORON

    Aguayo = INCOMPETENT

    Reyes = WTF?

  289. metsforever says:

Another typical Mets game with Santana. He should have 12 or 13 wins by now and they can’t blow his games fast enough.

How can you buy a guy like that and not let him finish games.

Sorry Wags. I have been tough on you, but the rest of these guys are horrible

  290. patrick says:

    But Jerry is the best…

OH and big thanks to Billy The Gutless.

  291. teufelshuffle86 says:

    FUUUUUUUUUUUCK ME!!

  292. wildgeneral says:

Last time the Mets lost to the Phils, Manuel pulled Santana after <100 pitches and the bullpen blew it.

So much for history teaching us, huh?

  293. Dafatone80 says:

Why do we keep going to Feliciano over Show in these spots?

Feliciano’s been pretty bad this year.

  294. miker94 says:

    game over

  295. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Good night. I can’t watch the rest of this.

  296. grotesmask says:

This is the absolute worst managerial decision by Manuel yet!

This will also be our very worst loss of the year. I really am physically sick. Holy Mother of God!!!

  297. EV says:

I wanted that third base coach FIRED

    • SuperSchlong says:

How do you say “You’re Fired” in Spanish? He don’t comprende nothin’ else.

  298. Backman_Backer says:

why did we pull johan again?

  299. Koko says:

    Good night. . . .

    And fire Jerry!

  300. Dafatone80 says:

You’d think in a 7 pitch at bat, Feliciano could have thrown something inside to Taguchi.

  301. wildgeneral says:

Those 2 runs from Aguayo look pretty important now, don’t they?

  302. gipper82475 says:

    FIRE MANUEL.

    Stab Aguayo.

    Utter incompetence.

    Disgusting.

  303. metsforever says:

    Bases loaded in 7th—-No score.

Chavez out twice at the plate.

    Guys here blaming Santana? Please.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

“Guys here blaming Santana? Please” …. what do you expect from some of these idiot Met fans??? the only pitcher in baseball that pitches complete games is Halladay.

  304. Arsenal13 says:

    Gotta love our coaching staff

  305. KL15 says:

OH DEAR GOD!!! This will be a devestating loss. I fear this is the beginning of the end.

  306. teufelshuffle86 says:

Great finish by the Mets. Still nobody out.

  307. c.1970 says:

why the phuck did manuel pull santana with no closer? why the phuck did manual pull santana with a low pitch count? why the phuck didn’t santana fight to defend his lead? this is phucking nauseating, and it may be a season killer.

  308. almar1965 says:

    And there goes the game.

I hope the media calls Jerry on this after the game. Looks like the honeymoon is over for Jerry.

Lovely. Blow a game with your Ace pitching a great game, and with a head case pitching the next game in Maine.

  309. MetsFan4Decades says:

I hate these intentional walks here.

  310. jimyager says:

WE LOOSE AGAIN !!! Why cant we win a game that Santana starts?
This is a flashback to May when we would loose games late. THIS SUCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  311. MetsFan4Decades says:

You just can’t make this stuff up…..

  312. khmustache says:

    jesus

  313. SuperSchlong says:

What the f**k do Met managers have against complete games?

Santana owns the Phlis all night, so why take him out?

And you just KNEW the game was sunk when Feliciano took the mound.

    • almar1965 says:

It made no sense whatsoever. He dominated the Phils. He had a pitch count that was reasonable enough to have him go out there. Even Keith himself alluded to Johan sending a message by pitching a complete game.

And what does that d*ckhead Manuel do? TAKE HIM OUT?!?

  314. kbh218 says:

    Mets bullpen is TERRIBLE!!!

  315. washtiger says:

What happened on the Reyes play?

    • NYwho27 says:

It is so nice to waste another game by Santana. Our bullpen cannot get the bottom of their lineup out, thats pathetic.

Lets hope they don’t fold like a cheap tent now!

Being a mets fan is pure torture sometimes.

    • SuperSchlong says:

He lost his mind for a moment. Easy double play if he knew where the hell he was.

  316. metsforever says:

What a freakin joke these guys are. Now watch the Mets score 2 just to rub salt in it.

  317. ridethesnake says:

What happened to blaming Delgado? That’s what these same people did last month. Which way is the wind blowing tonight?

  318. mrose says:

is this the most depressing loss this year? YES!

  319. EliPorter says:

    i threw up a bit

  320. Eggman says:

This is a major spot on Manuel’s resume. Just a horrble, ridiculous, absurd, mind boggling decision taking out Santana.

I’m sick of ths “new”BS baseball. 105 MFing pitches from a guy making 20 mil a year and he can’t go further.

    This is bad, real bad.

    • almar1965 says:

Pelfrey has thrown more pitches than that in his starts on occasion. So is Jerry telling us a two-time Cy Young winner cannot go further than a young pitcher?

  321. EV says:

This is the BULLPENS fault and the stupid third base coach, NOT SANTANA. Will you people please stop with this already.

  322. Dafatone80 says:

Maybe this is a lesson to everyone who thinks we’d be better off without Wagner.

  323. KL15 says:

I will say it again, this is the beginning of the end.

  324. el_giacomo says:

As bad as this inning has been, the game still ain’t over. There is still hope, however slight!

    LETS GO METS!

  325. patrick says:

Manuel should be RIPPED to shreds by the press, but he will get a pass becomes he reads biographies about Ghandi

  326. metsforever says:

Heilman for closer next time if we’re having tryouts. If it even ends up mattering after this. These games have a tendency to multiply. (See September ‘07)

  327. dave27 says:

I think Jayson Stark is owed some apologies.

Bottom line, this game says it all. The Phillies execute, the Mets do not.

Phillies cut two runners down at the plate with crisp plays, Mets have left 2 outs and counting on the field in the 9th.

  328. Darth Manuel says:

Well,,,,, this is just mind boggling? I pray that Billy was truly unavailable and that Jerry didn’t try and get cute here.

    • Dafatone80 says:

Billy had to be unavailable. No question.

      • patrick says:

He is a big pussy then, he is paid to deliver not quiver

        • MudvilleNine says:

Yeah. Looked to me like he struck out 3 guys in that last game despite this so-called injury. I dont think he wants any part of coming in in a close game against the Phillies

  329. Dafatone80 says:

Thing to point out on that Reyes play. Was a very high chop, did he even have a shot at Victorino at first? Would like to see a replay of that.

    • patrick says:

Victorino was at second, Ruiz was at first, they would have had one out, but that guarantees nothing

    • dave27 says:

It wasn’t Victorino, it was slow-ass Ruiz. What do you think?

      • Dafatone80 says:

Oh, that explains it. Now, Ruiz is actually pretty fast for a catcher.

But yeah, no question. I had it reversed, thought it was Ruiz running to 2nd and was a little confused at how he got there so quick.

    • kbh218 says:

He could of least gotten one out.

  330. methead says:

say what you want about manuel, but thats 3 guys from the bullpen that couldnt get an out. 3 GUYS!!!! You dont lose this type of game. This is exactly what the phillies needed. Now they come back win at the very least the next game and most likely the next 2.

    Disgusting. gutless.

    • patrick says:

If the dolt is not going to go to Wagner, dont go to anyone else until your starter is on fumes

    • dave27 says:

The Phillies OWN every single pitcher in that bullpen. You can’t pull Santana. Cannot.

We’ve blown 10-1 and 5-1 leads the last 2 times we’ve seen these a-holes. What else do you want?

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

Agreed. Might have been the wrong call to take Santana out but no one expected the Phils to score 5 runs in the 9th. I would have thought one of the three relievers brought in could get an out.

    • Eggman says:

No, that’s the whole point. If you bring in X amount of pitchers, the odds are at least one of them will be ineffective.

    • almar1965 says:

No. Manuel gets blame for this. Simple as that. Unless Johan’s arm was ready to fall off, you CANNOT TAKE HIM OUT when he was basically cruising deep into the game with only 105 pitches.

      DUMB, DUMB, DUMB.

      Period.

    • Midtown says:

Agreed. Manuel made the right calls here, for the most part. The only part I disagreed with was pulling Smith. I know you want to get the match-ups right, but he should have known Taguchi was on their bench, and it wouldn’t work out either way.

This game is on the shoulders of the Sanchez/Feliciano.

      • almar1965 says:

Yes Sanchez and Feliciano coughed it up, but Jerry will need to explain to the media why he took out Santana in a huge game he was dominating when he looked to still be strong.

It had better be a good excuse. Doubtful.

The honeymoon will be over for Jerry and the media in about 30 minutes.

  331. kd bart says:

If guys in your bullpen can’t get you three outs with a three run then hey shouldn’t be on the major league roster.

    • EV says:

Exaclty bart, what are these guys doing in the big leauges if they can’t get three outs.

  332. bittergreen says:

is this the new “worst loss of the year”? It is pretty disheartening.

  333. kistics says:

    fukkin bullpen retards!!!!!

  334. khmustache says:

why wasn’t sho brought in? hasn’t he been the best reliever all year?

  335. Koko says:

We all hope not, but this good be in the a beginning of a bad series.

At home, Ace pitches wonderfully, Mets score 5 runs for him, but the manager goes crazy and decides he likes his bullpen sans an injured closer, so he pulls the ace.

    Idiot.

Managing is vastly overrated over the course of a season, but this game is all on Manual (and the bullpen guys for actually stinking too).

3rd base coach made some mistakes, but Mets would still lose 8-7 if Chavez happened to score both times he was out.

    FIRE JERRY!!

    • therealsince86 says:

You are forgetting that those 2 blunders by the terrible 3rd base coach cost OUTS too.

  336. dave27 says:

What is Gary Cohen’s beef with Reyes? Hoew is that they “key play?” The next two batters doubled, moron.

How is this inning at all on Reyes?

  337. bkfitz says:

Sanchez sucked. Half the time his stuff his garbage to begin with. The only thing he has every night is guts.

Endy needs to be benched. He goofed up a triple and got thrown out twice.

Reyes needs to know the runners. If you want to get Victorino out, run, don’t tip-toe.

In retrospect, Santana should have pitched the 9th. Sanchez should have been hooked much earlier. Heilman should have started the 9th to begin with.

    • patrick says:

the Reyes play was not nearly as big as Gary is making it, maybe they score one less run, maybe.

    • Dafatone80 says:

      What the hell?

Chavez doesn’t make the decision to go home. That’s the coach.

Are you benching him for not being faster?

  338. Prismo says:

I need suggestions as to how to handle going into work with 5 Phillies fans in a couple of hours.

  339. Nate W. says:

well the Mets should add a lefty reliever to their wish list. Pedro Feliciano has been mostly useless this whole season. If Wagner is going to be out and Feliciano pitching like a AA loogy they need someone.

Jon Rauch didnt cost much, can they find a lefty under control who is an upgrade?

  340. kistics says:

Bring on Huston Street.. these bullpens guys are useless pieces of shiits

    CAN’T EVEN GET 3 FUKKIN OUTS!!@!@#@!@#

    • therealsince86 says:

      Agreed with the Huston Street.

    • bkfitz says:

Let’s trade Wagner to the Astros for Hunter Pence. They think they’re in contention.

    • dave27 says:

Again, anyone who’s been watching know we don’t have one reliever the Phillies don’t have the book on.

      Pulling Santana was inexcusable.

And not only did the Phillies throw out Chavez in the 8th, but Utley saved a 2-run single. Execution.

  341. kistics says:

    W

  342. KL15 says:

Well everyone, here’s the facts. The Mets cannot win games when they count the most. There will be no division crown, to wild card, no playoffs. This is the most gutless performance I’ve ever seen. Damnit Manuel, you did this in Philadelphia and look what happened…..AND YOU DID IT AGAIN!!!!.

  343. metsflip says:

it’d be nice if we had Huston Street

  344. kbh218 says:

My money is on Wagner telling the press after the game that he WAS available and that he does not know why Manuel did not bring him in. This was the most important game of the season to date…no time to get cute, Jerry. Didn’t he learn from watching Willie pull this kind of crap for 3+ seasons?

    • MudvilleNine says:

Jerry was the bench coach. Maybe Willie was listening to him too much and its been Jerry all along.

  345. Dafatone80 says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Jerry doesn’t like to use Show. No idea why.

  346. joseReyes4MVP says:

Please don’t try to blame Reyes for this loss. That one out would have done NOTHING to save this inning. How hard is it to recognize that in a close game, when he’s been lights out and the closer is unavailable, you SEND JOHAN OUT TO PITCH THE NINTH!!!!!!!!!!

It’s been a fun ride for 25 games or so, Jerry, but it’s time to pack the bags.

    • Are you kidding..Jose is absolutely to blame as is Feliciano and Duaner…that was the most boneheaded thing and lackadaisical play I have seen him make…

  347. EliPorter says:

what does johan need to do???

man, why the heck does manuel take him out going into the 9th?

screw the pitch count, hes a stud… and dont tell me you need argenis to bat 2nd in the lineup, especially with 1 out and no one on… with wags unavailable, santana needs to go all 9

    • letsgomets942 says:

Johan must be wishing he stayed in Minnesota. This one is just sad and it all on Jerry! I hope he feels the heat for this!!

  348. kd bart says:

If you can’t trust your bullpen there to get you three outs with a three run lead then you’ll never trust them.

A manager has to trust that his bullpen will get the job done there.

    • Nate W. says:

He’s been here all year, he should know better than to trust anyone but Wagner. Muniz should have been in there, he’s been a closer for three years now.

Personally I’m just going to blame Mota. His influence from last year still hasnt worn off…

  349. Flushing_is_Burning says:

They couldn’t have blown a more important game than this one. UNBELIEVABLE. Wagner or not, they should have been able to get their 5-6-7 hitter. I’m gonna go puke

  350. Orlandometsfan says:

This is my first post, because I am so disgusted! Santana should fire this team. I bet he wishes he was still with the Twins. Can he ever catch a break! SIx runs in one inning, rediculous. Evryone says we need bat, how about someone who can get outs in the pen.

  351. NYCESQ says:

I can’t even imagine what is going through Johan’s head.

Worst loss of the year, by far.

    • MudvilleNine says:

Johan should have had the nuggets to tell Jerry he wasnt coming out of this game. An ace, a stud, the main man, would have.

  352. foul bunt strikeout says:

well that’ll about do it folks…i wouldn’t be surprised by a phillies sweep now.

nice job guys…get our hopes up and this

you just ruined thousands of people’s nights…jerks

  353. tengobotas says:

    Its just god damn depressing.

  354. kistics says:

Why was Sanchez so predictable?? These guys were SITTING on his change up and fouling all his fastballs. He can’t mix it up???
3 fastball and a changeup.. next batter 3 fastball and changeup…
ALL OF THEM OUTSIDE!! WTF is wrong with this dude

  355. AngryFan says:

    F**K ALL OF THESE CHOKERS.

THEY CAN BEAT THE PHILS ALL THEY WANT EARLY IN THE SEASON, BUT WHEN THE GAMES GET MORE AND MORE MEANINGFUL, THEY ALWAYS ASSUME THEIR PROPER ROLES: THAT OF THE CHOKER PUNK B*TCHES.

    CHOKING PIECES OF GARBAGE.

    Shades of 2007.

Dear Omar: Don’t get an OF. Sell. Be a seller. This team is a team of choking b*tches who will never NEVER EVER NEVER manage to win anything.

  356. EV says:

If and or when they lose, this will be the worst loss of the year BY FAR. This game has a 2007 feel, boy I hate saying that.

  357. recoton1 says:

Is there a clause in Johan’s contract that he isn’t allowed to pitch more than 100 pitches in a start. This is an embarrassment. We could have paid any number of losers to pitch 100 pitches. This is the worst money the team has ever spent. This guy is a gutless jobber. How many games do you need to lose a “W” before you start demanding the ‘effin ball in the 9th inning. He’s had how many days of rest with the ASB.. and got yanked early in the previous spot.. what does he care.. he got his money.. ehh.. 7 or 8 innings.. biggest game of the year.. take me out coach.. I did enough tonight. He’s probably in the clubhouse right now showering. PATHETIC. Why do I bother getting my hopes up with the sh!tbag team year after year. Johan = what sheffield was talking about last season.. paycheck player. gutless. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

    • NYCESQ says:

How could you possibly blame this on him?

    • metsforever says:

      NOT SANTANA’S FAULT.

      • recoton1 says:

TAKE THE EFFIN BALL… DEMAND THE BALL.. YOU ARE THE PITCHER. DEMAND THE BALL.. this is the 3rd time this season that he went out early and the bullpen blew it.. HOW MANY TIMES BEFORE THE PIECE OF GARBAGE DEMANDS THE BALL. biggest waste of money. pathetic. I want a player like F-Hernandez.. I was at the game when he got injured (where santana got the L).. and the guy was injured on a play at the plate.. he demanded the ball and refused to come out. HE HAD TO BE CARRIED off the field.. Johan is a primadonna.. he will blast his teammates tomorrow in the papers.. F HIM. He is officially my least favorite met on this collection of gutless scumbags.

  358. Dafatone80 says:

Lidge has to melt down one of these days…

  359. almar1965 says:

Well, the Mets will have to save Jerry’s ass from the fire tonight.

    Another late inning rally?

  360. Orlandometsfan says:

    I am speechless just speechless.

  361. washtiger says:

Absolutely disgusting. It takes 4 pitchers to get 3 freakin’ outs?! WTF? And especially to give up a game tying double to that world beater So Taguchi?!

This is a painful one, my friends. Even with Endy getting thrown out the second time, we still had the bases loaded that inning, and 8 men LOB in the game…

  362. metsforever says:

Another example of why wins/losses are not a very reliable stat. Joe Smith is getting the loss and he was the only one of those clowns who did anything right until Heilman cleaned up after the tornado.

The Phillie guy is going to fall into a win and Santana gets crap for pitching a great game.

  363. Jay says:

Oh my god Endy is trying to steal home from first!!!

  364. Championmets says:

    alright lets get something started

  365. tengobotas says:

At least Lidge is having control problems

  366. kd bart says:

Real tough bunch of commenters around. A little adversity and you go straight to surrender.

Don’t bother following the team the rest of the season.

    We don’t need you.

  367. stearnsfan12 says:

Manuel is a p*ssy. There is no way you don’t leave your supposed ace to the mound for the 9th when he isn’t much over 100 pitches. You factor in that your closer isn’t available, and its a no-brainer that Johan should have been in there to face the lesser part of the Phillies batting order. Manuel is responsible for this loss and the Mets lost b/c he managed like a coward.

If Johan didn’t press to get out there for the 9th, he is not what this team needs down the stretch. They need a warrior and I hope I see something after this game that indicates Johan wanted to get into the 9th inning.

    • dave27 says:

I wouldn’t give Santana a pass. He should’ve made Manuel pry the ball out of his hand.

Santana is a prima donna. It’s pretty clear.

  368. teufelshuffle86 says:

Jerry needs to go over the ‘hold’ sign with Aguayo.

  369. D-Day says:

santana should get free shots on sanchez, smith, jerry and feliciano. on a positive note we lost the first game of the last season in heartbreaking fashion and came back to win the next 10. lets hope to see that again

  370. teufelshuffle86 says:

Remember, these are the post Willie Mets. They don’t roll over so easily anymore.

  371. Orlandometsfan says:

Even if we do win the bull pen seems weakest when it’s most crucial.

  372. kistics says:

This really fukkin blows!!! So pissed off
This is the worst loss EVER

  373. bittergreen says:

You gotta think that the Mets hate Johan.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

You gotta wonder if Johan is thinking right about now someone does not like him.
      Damn.

  374. SantanaCYYOung says:

This soft team will NOT recover from this loss. Nothing has changed.

  375. kd bart says:

This is all on Sanchez and Feliciano and no one else!!!

These are major league professionals. If they can’t perform what they are paid to do then they shouldn’t be there.

    • dave27 says:

Normally I agree, but they are not closers. Johan has to be in there.

Flip it around, if you are a Phillies fan how psyched are you that Johan is pulled? Same with the players.

Manuel gave them hope in this game.

    • EV says:

      Again Bart is right

    • 911nafstem says:

And the fact that Johan is too much of a pssy to throw over 100 pitches. But no, let’s continue to fan the guy and feed him grapes.

  376. DoYouSeeInHD says:

Feliciano has a whip nearing 2. That means that when he comes in with men on base, those men are virtually guaranteed to score. Why is it that he always gets a free pass? The guy never met an inherited runner he didn’t let score. Everyone time someone on the blog says Feliciano has been good this year it makes me want to jump into the monitor and strangle the poster. Please please please tell me you guys finally notice how bad he sucks.

  377. almar1965 says:

And there goes our “All-Star” Wright striking out late in thee game.

    …rolling eyes…

    • kingman 26 says:

You should be rolling eyes at yourself for blaming Wright.

What an unbelievable bunch of whining fools on here tonight.

      It’s Wright’s fault, it’s Santana’s fault, it’s Aguayo’s fault.

At least KD Bart has a clue.

  378. D-Day says:

this hurts. i mean this phisically hurts! i think im gonna be sick. i can hear people in philly laughing at us from hear.

  379. Championmets says:

No its on Jerry, Johan should’ve stayed in the game

  380. Nails says:

Great AB David…..fantastic. Way to put runners on……what a joke….David Wright approaching useless right about now

  381. Orlandometsfan says:

I can’t see the game, how did Reyes not get an out in the 9th?

    • dave27 says:

Why are people obsessing about this play – it was sandwiched between 5 freaking hits!!!!! It maybe makes it 7-5 instead of 8-5. That’s all.

  382. therealsince86 says:

Steet and Murton need to pack their bags.

  383. dave27 says:

Run Endy! Go for the hat trick at the plate!

  384. kbh218 says:

I am surprised Aguayo didn’t wave Endy home on that past ball.

  385. D-Day says:

endy will get thrown out at home anyway. dosent matter

  386. AngryFan says:

Expect the Phils to sweep this series.

The Phils have the MONEY players, while the Mets have players who make money.

    Huge difference.

Honestly, this just brings the bile and disgust of 2007 all the way back again.

I honestly despise this team as of this moment. Things never EVER change. It always s**ks to be a Mutts fan

  387. therealsince86 says:

Beltran just needs to get on there.

  388. teufelshuffle86 says:

Surprised they didn’t send Chavez home on that wild pitch.

  389. Championmets says:

Is it too late to become sellers and build for 2010

  390. recoton1 says:

you can almost feel the solo shot for Delgado here. Then a weak tapper to rolling to end this misery.

  391. therealsince86 says:

That run means nothing. GET ON BASE!

  392. Prismo says:

Note to the fans: this game is on the entire team, minus Santana.

The hitters couldn’t take advantage of numerous scoring opportunities (including Endy being thrown out at the plate twice – both times I would’ve held him).

The relief pitching couldn’t muster the balls to get outs.

The fielding couldn’t muster the balls to..oh…FIELD.

And Manuel, in typical moronic fashion, took Johan out of a dominant performance when our closer isn’t available.

  393. Orlandometsfan says:

Just cant imagine bases loaded infield hit and not one out made thats all.

  394. Nails says:

So Taguchi = 0-16 as a pinch hitter until tonight

    You cant make it up….

  395. kendychavez says:

delgado: up and in pitch::beltran: low pitch

can’t lay off, take garbage swings and pansie groundouts to the right side

  396. kd bart says:

20-20 hindsight is a beautiful thing.

  397. MetsFan4Decades says:

Wow. That as just about the ugliest game the Mets have had in a long time.
Not even when they were consistently losing every other game, was it this ugly.

For the love of 3 lousy outs…..

  398. metsforever says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  399. dave27 says:

This is a horrific loss…but sellers? Season over? have some stones.

    • AngryFan says:

We have stones….but the f**king MUTTS do not.

      Big games = THEY CHOKE.

We have a 3 year sample size, from the 2006 NLCS to last season to tonight.

They’re soft. They’re soft chokers and after this game you can never ever convince me differently. They can rip off another 10 in a row, and when they’re facing off against Philly in a big game later on, they will BLOW it.

Soft, soft soft. The whole lot of them. And Reyes…..f**king idiot.

Reyes bumbles and stumbles whiole Rollins delivers the deathblow.

      TYPICAL.

  400. Darth Manuel says:

this is going to be a long series… bullpen is shot

  401. Dafatone80 says:

Alright, so we’re down a game.

    I feel good about tomorrow.

  402. DAK442 says:

Manuel is an idiot, plain and simple. Folksy aphorisms are not an apt substitute for baseball strategy. Can we PLEASE hire a manager who knows what the hell he is doing?

This is the kind of loss that’ll send us on a nice little 1-9 run.

  403. gipper82475 says:

    Disgusting…

If Metsblog has any guts, Cerrone will call for Aguayo’s head tomorrow and a public apology from Manuel for his idiocy.

  404. EV says:

What a terrible loss. Damn third base coach and god awful bullpen.

  405. 911nafstem says:

Just gotta sleep this one off, or drink it off, one or the other, or both

  406. khmustache says:

sometimes i really hate this team…i’m going to bed

  407. 911nafstem says:

At least Johan’s ERA went down. Am I right?

  408. kd bart says:

No fan base turns quicker on a dime than Met fans.

    You people are amazing.

One really bad loss and you’re ready to throw in the towel.

    PATHETIC!!!

    • patrick says:

are you kidding? this was a disgrace, a moronic managing job and I guarantee Manuel will get pass after pass after pass after pass, this game was a DISASTER.

You do not loss a game leading 5-2 at home with your ace on the hill going into the 9th, you just do not.

      • AngryFan says:

Seriously. They DESERVE to have the fans turn on them. You know what this is? This is CONCRETE EVIDENCE that they’re chokers.

You can’t dismiss last season as a fluke. Not anymore.

They dropped the hammer on their foot instead of on the Phils.

Screw the lot of them. Don’t you dare to defend them

    • kingman 26 says:

You are SO RIGHT KD Bart—this is a sad, sad commentary of the state of Met fandom in the wake of coming back from 7 1/2 games out to tie for first in a month!

We are one game out and it is July 22!!

  409. teufelshuffle86 says:

Horrible loss, but winning the next two will bring things right back. Not ready to jump off a bridge just yet.

  410. kbh218 says:

I am surprised the fans at Shea didn’t shower the field with trash after the last out.

  411. nysportsfan16 says:

this is why the Mets wont win the division

  412. Orlandometsfan says:

Im not giving up but we need to sure up the pen. We need some who is an escape artist not someone who gets us into trouble. I think we need that more then an outfielder. I haven’t heard left field has lost the game for us.

    • 911nafstem says:

No one’s giving up, it’s just frustrating that on the big stage, and this was the biggest game of the year so far, the Mets fold.

  413. WrightsRight says:

If I’m Johan, I am begging and pleading to get me out of my contract. And that is after I beat the piss out of my bullpen. What an utter, disgraceful, horrible waste. Anyone who plays this loss down is a rube.

    • 911nafstem says:

He sure isn’t begging and pleading to stay in ballgames.

      • patrick says:

and you know this how? the last time a player begged and pleaded on the field everyone called him a crybaby

    • Arsenal13 says:

It’s on Johnan for not begging to stay in the 9th inning after only pitching 105. THat is not very much for the supposed best pitcher in baseball…give me Doc Halladay everytime and he’ll finish the game no matter what

      • 911nafstem says:

        Someone gets it

        • gipper82475 says:

Look, we have no idea if Johan begged to stay in or not. The point is, he shouldn’t be put in a position where his only option is to beg to be left in a game where he is dominating and the closer isn’t unavailable.

He shouldn’t be in that position because if the manager had a brain cell in his head, he wouldn’t think of taking him out.

        • patrick says:

It is abundantly clear by Manuel’s lack of logic that even had Johan begged he would not have won.

Manuel theorizes that IF Santana gets Burrell, he would give him at least Howard in the 9th, brilliant, he gets Howard to end the 8th but they could not dare have him go out against turd burglers one, two and three in the 9th…Manuel was grasping at straws. Lame.

    • metsforever says:

Santana should give Joe Nathan a chunk of his contract for finishing all those games in Minnesota

  414. HangingSlider says:

Im not quitting on this team at all, but lots of bad decisions were made tonight by the manager, the coaching staff and no execution by the players when it counted the most.

I hate that when the chips are down, i wouldnt wager a cent on this team winning a big game.

    • AlwaysAmazing5 says:

Let’s not overreact. It’s a bad loss, but a win tomorrow and it’s even again. No need to panic.

      • AngryFan says:

Oh please. Look at the headcase we have tomorrow.

Christ, 5 run 1st inning for the Phils guaranteed

    • metsforever says:

They get worse as the games get bigger.

  415. johnnyvegas77 says:

Honestly, I’ve been waiting for this game to happen for a few weeks. They’ve managed to win and get right back in….creating a “Godfather 3″ moment for all of us fans… (just when we were out, they pulled us back in). This will clearly end with us fans keeling over and falling out of our commemorative Shea Stadium plastic seats and on the Citi Field fanwalk. Charming.

Put simply, this team is gutless and just does not execute. They do none of the little things that win baseball games, and if I was not already a Mets fan, I would seriously consider being a Phillies fan because they play the game the right way.

  416. Two-By-Four says:

This was a crushing defeat and depending on what happens in the next two games it could have season implications. Just how big of a lead do you need for this bullpen against these Phillies? Lately, Feliciano has been consistently bad and they should look to move him off this team. There is no excuse for the job done by the third base coach and the Mets should look to try someone else there. And the big question I have is was Santana really spent and did he ask out?

    • metsforever says:

There is no safe lead against the Phillies with these guys. What was it last series, 10-1?

Never stop scoring. That is the real moral. I get sick of the unwritten rules that you have to stop stealing bases or trying to get that extra run no matter what the lead.

  417. RetireNumber17 says:

Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue.

  418. Orlandometsfan says:

Thats why I say for the love of God get us some pen help.

  419. metsforever says:

    BREAKING NEWS:

Johan Santana has demanded a trade to a contender. He has listed the Twins as a team that he would consider.

    • therealsince86 says:

You mean he can’t count? I would think he would know that they are actually farther out than we are. Be it only a .5 game.

      • metsforever says:

But they have a closer and balls. The Mets pen chokes in every big game. You can pretty much look it up. He has to be frustrated by that.

  420. playmaker3128 says:

feel bad for the fans that had to watch that. Horrible! Wagner isn’t available you do not take Johan out of the freaking game! i don’t care if johan fought manuel or not, unless he took himself out manuel should not take him out! its ridiculous!

Really stupid desicion making, he wasn’t at 120 pitches, he was at 100. He can throw another inning.

Wow, i really hope this doesn’t come back to bite us, but we have to win tommarow, can’t let philly keep this momentum. Were facing Brett freaking myers, we should win the game. Tommarow will tell us alot about the so called resiliency of this team.

    • tengobotas says:

This series is basically the factor that will either call the bluff on this team this season and honestly having watched every game so far this year, I dont have hopes. I love em and I support them but the bullpen has been a huge problem the whole season.

Most people here know baseball better than I do but seriously, ive thought since May this team needs a reliever who can get the job done.

    • SuicideWatch says:

and it was the bottom of the lineup

  421. foul bunt strikeout says:

well yet another devastating loss for our NY Mets

I could hear wallace matthews cheer from my house

    thanks mets

  422. X-Man says:

goes to show you how difficult it is to get those last three lousy outs. That’s why closers get paid the big bucks folks. Say all you want about Wagner, but I have a hunch he would have done better, call me crazy. You can tell Mets pitcher not accustomed to closing games were pitching NOT to lose instead of going right after the hitters and pitching to win, way to careful with every pitch. That’s the lack of a closer’s mentality.

    • 911nafstem says:

Totally, and that’s why with Wagner out, Johan had to step up and tell Jerry he wanted to finish.

  423. Orlandometsfan says:

    Breaking news:

All fair weather Mets fans have been fired! Go watch the flavor of the month. lOl

    • Two-By-Four says:

Those fair weather fans fill the seats, buy the products and watch SNY. They put revenue in the Wilpon’s pocket that is translated to the talent level on the field. Be happy they’re there. :)

  424. SuicideWatch says:

I am utterly devastated…..I don’t know what else to say…..just utterly devastated…..utterly…..utterly…..utterly….just devastated.

  425. DAK442 says:

Lot of gutlessness in the lineup again, but this is 100% on the manager. I can’t wait to hear Jerry’s excuse for pulling him. What a damn imbecile.

And now the pen will be shot for when Maine can’t make it oout of the fifth tomorrow.

  426. f.e says:

Here we go again the phillys are back in our heads

  427. WrightsRight says:

Absolutely horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible loss. You can’t spin this positively at all. At. All. Just terrible. Next two games are must-wins, plain and simple.

And Johan is regretting coming to this team. When he pitches well, no one hits or his bullpen implodes. Awful. Awful. Awful.

    • 911nafstem says:

Johan just as big a culprit in this loss as anyone. Everyone likes to throw the word “gutless” around, how about growing a pair and finishing off the biggest game of the season? Is that asking too much? There’s a reason this guy sucks in the playoffs.

      • metsforever says:

Is he supposed to pitch a complete game shutout every game? Because that’s pretty much what you seem to expect.

      • SovereignRonnie says:

Culprits for this loss (in approximate order):
        1. Duaner Sanchez
        2. Pedro Feliciano
        3. Jerry Manuel
        4. Jose Reyes
        5. 3rd base coach
        .
        .
        .
        1,058: Johan Santana.

        I don’t get it.

      • kingman 26 says:

Unreal! All day, everyone posts how he better pitch a good game, and he pitches an EXCELLENT game and all of the dingbats are STILL calling for his head!

This loss was not 1% Santana’s fault.

  428. Gina says:

Wow wtf happened? I came home it was 5-2 mets in the top of the 9th. I leave and come back like an hour later and we lost 8-6?

    • Dafatone80 says:

It was brutal. Be glad you missed it.

Duaner came in, three straight singles. Joe Smith got a high chop up the middle, Reyes barehanded it and went to step on 2nd, but it was Victorino running to 2nd and he beat it out. Feliciano came in and got pounded, and by the time he dropped a comebacker that would have been an inning ending DP, 5 runs were in. He got the out at 1st, a run scored. Heilman comes in, walks a guy, and gets out of the inning. 6 runs, all in all.

  429. kevinmets31 says:

What a pathetic loss. I honestly do not know why we even support this team. No one on here expects them to win 100 games a year but for god’s sake don’t self destruct everytime you play meaningful games against division rivals. This is by far the worst loss all year HANDS DOWN. As much as I do think Manuel should have let Santana in, it’s not so much his fault. Don’t we pay the bullpen too? It’s all on the players, don’t blame Manuel.

  430. nysportsfan16 says:

I dont know why I am a Mets fan

  431. SantanaCYYOung says:

Same old stuff from this team, who cares anymore? sanchez is no good, feliciano, is no good, wagner is hurt, church ai’t coming back, beltran is so overrated, schneider sucks (big time), maine is overrated, etc. etc.

this team is so soft, i bet you they lose the next 5 games

    • SuicideWatch says:

Yup, they have now lost 3 of 4 since the 10 game winning streak, now they will lost at least the next 7 of 10 to even out to .500.

  432. f.e says:

I guess jerry will recant the statement that duaner is able to close games

  433. Koko says:

Okay, now trying to get Huston Street doesn’t look like that bad of an idea does it?

Jerry needs to take a few punches for this loss.

Jerry is more talk than anything else. He talked about letting pitchers pitch 115-120 pitches, but I guess 105 is his limit. *shaking fist*

I pray this isn’t the ‘new’ beginning of the end. If the Mets can win the next two everything will be fine. . . . Except Jerry’s decisions.

Give the Mets players a lot of vodka. . .

  434. playmaker3128 says:

Despite the horrible loss were still only a game out, we gotta win tommarow night. Again we’ll see just how much this team is made of tommarow, phils have all the momentum. We are facing brett myers, i think losing to that idiot might rival losing this game.

    • f.e says:

your right what happens in the next two game is really what this is all about But if the loose the next 2 we are really in the tank

  435. KL15 says:

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!!! This is the end. This team is broken. Some of the regulars on this board write down somewhere I said this, and hold me to it a couple of months from now. This team will not make the playoffs, nor will it finish above .500. This loss has broken the team, it’s all over everyone. Got to wait till next year…….again.

    • metfanLI says:

Nahhhh…this was a real bad fluke of a game – they will come back. But I am not seeing what all of you seem to see in Jerry’’s post game session – he sounds like he is blowing smoke most of the time – he really does not say much of anything…plus he sounds like he smoked something before the session – does he always sound like that?

    • nysportsfan16 says:

thats a bit much dont you think, they are professionals after all

  436. playmaker3128 says:

So interesting how thing play out. Jerry says if we woulda got burrell he woulda let santana start the 9th. Delgado almost caught that foul ball, but didn’t. Not his fault as it was a tough play, its amazing though to think how one little thing changes the whole game.

  437. 911nafstem says:

Wow, I wish I was a Philly fan reading this right now. They must be loving this.

  438. Kellman says:

    I can’t speak.

  439. nysportsfan16 says:

I have no doubt that the division will be going back and forth all year long. No one is going to pull away with the division. However the Phils have showed that they are a better team and they always play 9 innings of baseball. As much as it pains me to say this the Mets are not that good

    • 911nafstem says:

The Phils suck ass too. It’ll be a battle of mediocrity all season long. Don’t forget the Mets still lead 7-4 this season.

      • SuicideWatch says:

the Phillies won’t lose another game to the Mets the rest of the year. The Mets were7-4 vs. the Phillies last year too and they finished up losing the last 6 vs. the Phillies.

      • Gina says:

I think I agree with this, although mediocrity is a little harsh.

    • f.e says:

neither is anyone in the east or the west for that matter

    • almar1965 says:

That’s an idiotic thing to say. 2 weeks ago the Mets took 3 of 4 in their home park. Did you think the Phillies were the better team then?

      PERSPECTIVE PEOPLE! WE NEED PERSPECTIVE!

  440. nysportsfan16 says:

    ugggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  441. Nails says:

I may be way off base here, but is anyone else getting frustrated seeing David Wright fail to come through in the clutch? I mean, bottom 9, Chavez on base, the idea is to get more runners on, and David just goes down, looking like a real weak AB??

When does this guy stop getting a pass??

    • tengobotas says:

      *cough* what about Beltran?

    • SuicideWatch says:

Yeah I know, that twp-run homer to tie in Cincy in the top of the 9th wasn’t clutch at all.

      • SuicideWatch says:

        **two-run

      • Nails says:

That was clutch, but tonight was a different ball of wax, given the circumstances, being at home, Santana goes 8 innings and all….much different than the HR in Cincy in my book.

It was just a bad AB, not one I’d expect from a “clutch” player. Our resident Golden Boy just seems to never take any flak…

    • DAK442 says:

      Wright AND Beltran.

    • skylog says:

i will say he does get a pass more than anyone, but he does come through. not as much this year, true, but he has and will.

that said, it was a horrid at bat. he was up 2-0, let’s one go right down the middle then swings at two pitches over his head getting totally overmatched.

  442. tengobotas says:

I like the Mets, theyre the best team in town.

More importantly, theyre still a winning team this season which they were not just a few weeks ago.

Tomorrow is a new day and the division is still wide open.

  443. Flushing_is_Burning says:

Sure Johan should have stayed in for the 9th, but a major league bullpen has to hold a 3 run lead if they want to be in contention. the Phllies just got a huge boost from tonight’s win

  444. DAK442 says:

So Jerry has NO reasonable explanation for pulling Johan. Jabbers about not having got Burrell out? What?! He was OK to face Howard but not the scrubs? Oh, he is as pathetic as Aguayo.

And nice job starting off with “I wish I would have had my closer”. Well, dummy, you KNEW you didn’t and you have one of the best pitchers in the game going.

  445. therealsince86 says:

Get Everyday Eddie and Nelson Cruz OR Street and Murton. I know that people will be all over me saying that Cruz and Murton suck but they will at least make the bench better if they don’t work out in the OF.

  446. mets19 says:

Billy Wagner KILLS the mets in every single way possible. When he pitches, when hes injured, in the allstar game, and even off the field.

  447. metmania says:

what a bunch of losers….they finished what they started in philly a couple of weeks ago, a blown fn game,,,unfortuanetly ill be following these a holes tomorrow

  448. c.1970 says:

Please don’t consider Mazzilli to manage in 2009. He’s defending Manuel’s INSANE decision to pull Santana. Harold Reynolds has the game down. His honesty and insight is the only reason to watch the post-game nightmare.

    • almar1965 says:

Reynolds for manager! He for one does not believe in pitch counts unlike 99.99999% of major league managers.

      LOL!

  449. WrightsRight says:

I was at my company summer party tonight, checking the score on my Blackberry…

    3-1

    5-1

Feeling great, let the drinks flow…things are great.

Check the score again. 5-3…Okay, a bit nervous.

    5-5

I knew right then and there the game was over and sure enough….

Gultess performance by the bullpen. They should hang their heads in shame. Pathetic.

3B coach needs to remember he is no longer coaching in the minor leagues.

    The horror, the horror….

  450. Two-By-Four says:

When the late Gil Hodges took over the reigns as Mets manager he removed Tom Seaver late in a game for the late Danny Frisella. The Mets bullpen then went on to lose the game. At that time a sports announcer (I don’t recall who) said that Hodges found out today that a tired Tom Seaver was better than a rested relief pitcher. Well a tired Santana is better than a rested bullpen without Wagner.

  451. teufelshuffle86 says:

So Jerry made a bad move. Easy to second guess now. If Sanchez (who’s ERA has been microscopic lately) comes in and gets the Phils 1-2-3, Jerry is a genius. I still think it was the right move. You have to think that a guy whose ERA was under .50 that last week or so could get three outs. Even when he left with the bases loaded Smith got a ground ball and the Mets couldn’t get an out.

Everybody calm down. The Mets can still finish this series in first place. Bad loss, yes. Season over, not by a long shot. Tomorrow is another day.

    • metmania says:

      screw tomorrow….today SUCKS

    • therealsince86 says:

Why not let Johan go out and see what happens though?

      • patrick says:

because apparently if he got Burrell he could get Howard in the 9th but not the 8th then someone else in the 9th….

you see the logic surely, Jerry is a philosopher, he digs it.

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

Sanchez has been lights out. No reason to think he couldn’t get three outs in the 9th, even giving up one or two runs. I think the bigger mistake was taking Smith out of the game. Smith got the ground ball and the Mets couldn’t convert. Then they bring in Feliciano and game over.

    • patrick says:

Bad loss? Can you pass the grass….

    • DAK442 says:

      “Easy to second guess…”

I’m pretty sure most Met fans were first-guessing with me, going ballistic when he pulled Johan. Seriously, did ANYONE else think it was a good idea?

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

Sanchez had a 0.84 ERA in his last 10 appearances. I thought he’d be able to get three outs. Not a crazy assumption.

    • Two-By-Four says:

Closing a game is not quite the same as pitching setup. Santana was pitching well and unless he was spent and asked out he’s the best pitcher on this staff and you want him out there.

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

Agreed that closing is a little different, but you have to expect one of your best relievers to be able to get three outs somewhere.

  452. SovereignRonnie says:

I just hope this loss doesn’t lead to the front office deciding we need bullpen help at any cost. I’d rather ride this season out and have THM, Kunz, Niese, et al in our system than 2 months of Brian Fuentes. If this means missing the playoffs, so be it. Heresy, I know.

I just think Kazmir for V. Zambrano redux would be more devastating than this loss.

    • therealsince86 says:

LOL, comparing Kazmir to Niese or Kunz.

      • SovereignRonnie says:

Really? you laughed out loud at that?

And since you proposed we get Everyday Eddie, Nelson Cruz, Huston Street AND Matt Murton just a few posts ago… who are we going to give up to get these guys? The likes of THM, Kunz, Niese, throw whomever else you wanted in there.

My post was obviously not a comparison.

        • therealsince86 says:

CAN YOU NOT READ THE WORD OR, OR, OR?

        • SovereignRonnie says:

Answer my question. Who are we giving up to get ANY of them.

          Better?

        • SovereignRonnie says:

And your post said, “Get Everyday Eddie and Nelson Cruz OR Street and Murton.” So don’t say you’re not implying getting more than one of these guys.

CAN YOU NOT READ THE WORD AND, AND, AND?

    • SuicideWatch says:

I agree, the Mets pen on paper should be one of the best in the NL…the current bullpen just needs to step up.

I’d rather keep the minor league guys too.

    • f.e says:

unless they take heiman for street then we got make a trade

    • Gina says:

The Kazmir trade is on a whole other level, neither of those pitchers are protected to be anywhere near as good as Kazmir is, and F-mart isn’t producing like Kazmir was at the time.

Kazmir was about as close to a sure thing as a prospect can be, it would take a lot of effort for any gm to match that trade.

  453. f.e says:

Jerry screwed this one up I hope he realizes this ones on him not just our pathetic bullpen .Tommorows another day lets hope myers is the same as hes been all year Maine has got show up the problem is what do we do after his five or six innings pray?

  454. nysportsfan16 says:

I guarantee Heilman gets the job done if he comes in the start of the inning

Me too, but maybe Sanchez does if that Ump calls a 3rd strike on a pitch down the heart of the plate.

    • 4eyeJoe says:

i agree with you on this one. i was a little annoyed when heilman was not closing the game and instead sanchez came out. he would have atleast gotten the job done but in a scary way.

  455. nysportsfan16 says:

the Yankees won 8-2 if anyone wants to talk about winning baseball

  456. 4eyeJoe says:

great job by the bullpen. when you need feliciano to get one out in the middle of an inning, he either walks the first batter, hits him or give up a long ball. sanchez was due for an implosion, i could feel it when you see him pitched two great innings last sunday. i have nothing against Smith, he did his job but reyes let him down.

it is amazing that the Phillies cannot hit for their lives against the starting pitching but all of a sudden becomes a .700 plus average hitting team against the bullpen especially against the mets bp.

the more i think about wagner, the more i cannot defend this guy anymore. he finds a way to choke in some way or form when you need him the most.

so taguchi = met killer, especially against left hand pitching. the guy could sit out for a month and still can get a clutch hit against the mets.

  457. fortleemets says:

Is it me, or do you guys not have the “I want to die, I can’t concentrate on anything right now” feeling after this loss. I feel like I should, but I don’t. Maybe it’s because I’ve been through so much, or that I realize that it’s just one game. Thoughts?

    • anrst says:

      i agree… i almost find it funny … i mean what’s another scar

    • skylog says:

one game, true, but you could not make this s up. the thing is, if this one game carries to tomorrow which carries to the next, that is where the problem starts. there are still a ton of games left, but we all know where that argument got them last season. for me, it is not about one game, live on, more games…..etc…..it is losing games that should have been won / losing games by not taking advantage of chances. each win is one less you need later, and to have let them go by the waste side is the killer for me.

    • SuicideWatch says:

Very true, I would usually lose sleep after a loss like this, but I think we’re all becoming desensitized to these devastating defeats. I mean they happen at least 2 or 3 times a month. It happened like 12 times last September.

It’s the 5 stages of death/grief and we are in the 5th and final stage of acceptance. I think we all recognize it.

    • DAK442 says:

I’m furious. I won’t sleep tonight. This game was ours. Now we need Maine to stop being such a pantywaist and throw a decent game tomorrow so we don’t get swept (because you KNOW Father Time Moyer will throw 7 shutout innings Thursday).
Phillies are gonna be all fired up and will sweep our asses.

  458. anrst says:

that’s what happens when OMAR and TONY B appoint their inexperienced cronies to coach third base

    • patrick says:

ya know, enough with the cronies non-sense.

Tatis is Omars cronie, how’d that work out?

Aguayo does not have to have a valid identification of no contact with the front office to not be a moron twice.

  459. nysportsfan16 says:

I know it is not over but for tonight im sick

  460. MetfaninFL says:

Jerry Manuel made all the right moves during this game.

    1. Removing Santana was the right choice. If Santana doesn’t bat in the 8th than leave him in but you can’t afford to give away chances to pad your lead especially without your closer.
    2. Bringing in Sanchez- Bringing in the 8th inning guy makes sense when your closer is out
    3. Bringing in Smith- Manuel knew the Phils couldn’t PH for their C so he takes out an ineffective Sanches and puts in a guy who got a big 3 outs a few weeks ago against the same team
    4. Bringing in Feliciano- This forced Phils to go to Taguichi who is not a HR threat. If Jenkins faces Smith there is a chance he hits a GS and puts the Phils on top while Taguchi would only tie the game which is a more desireable outcome.
    5. Letting Pedro face Rollins- I don’t care what the numbers say but I want Rollins from the RH side of the plate. He didn’t look good against Santana from that side .
    6. Removing Feliciano- He obviously was struggling and Heilman gave us better matcups and it might save Feliciano for another day.
The only way you blame Jerry is with hindsight and he doesn’t have the benefit of that. While this game hurts I think how you respond to adversity is more important than the adversity (10 game win streak started after a heartbreaking loss to Philly, while last September started with heartbreaking losses to them). Instantly tomorrow becomes the biggest game of the year. Hopefully Maine throws strikes and pulls us back even and almost erases today. Lets Go Mets ….. tomorrow

    • methead says:

I am positive person and this team is playing a lot better but no way they take the next 2, they would be lucky to win 1. Unless some how Maine shows up tomorow which is very unlikely. He will pitch 5 ininnings tops tomorow. watch out boys…we will be 3 games out and back to playing .500 baseball very soon. These are the types of losses good teams dont have. You cant be up by 3 with 2 outs and 2 strikes with no one on base and then give up 5 runs to lose.

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

I agree MetfaninFL. Hindsight is 20/20. Sanchez had a 0.84 ERA in his last 10 appearances. He should be able to get three outs and win the game for you.

    • DAK442 says:

I agree with all except #1, which set it all in motion. Manuel shat the bed. Three runs should be enough when your $140M ace has only thrown 105 pitches. Why bother pinch-hitting with no one on? Leave Johan in to at least start the ninth. Fire up the crowd, save the pen for 5-inning Johnny tomorrow, and keep bullpen guys out of those all-important, dreaded “unfamiliar situations”.

  461. metmania says:

sanchez cost us last series when we played philly….it was the first game of the series and santana was pitching….way to go sanchez way to fn go

  462. methead says:

Funny…..We knock wags but he would never have let 5 runs come in!! I mean come on, 3 different pitchers and you can’t get 1 out?? We had 2 outs and 2 strikes with no one on base!!!

  463. Gina says:

    Also I hate So Taguchi.

  464. X-Man says:

Easy with the “Doom and Gloom” guys. It’s just ONE loss. All this means is that we won’t be able to sweep, that’s all. Yeah it was a bad loss but so what, only one game out, big deal. 62 more games to play, that’s allot of ball games to go.

The Phills also found out Blanton is nothing special. Our pitching will be the difference and the reason why we will win the division. And in a week or so we’ll have a new left fielder and Churchy will be back and all will be dandy in Mets land.

Lets win the next two and we’ll all have a different perspective come Friday morning.

    • skylog says:

i hope you are right, x, i’ll get back to you tomorrow night.

    • SuicideWatch says:

Tell me please, what in the past 18 months would lead you to believe this team will win the next 2 games?

I would just love to hear it.

      • MetfaninFL says:

How about that 10 game winning streak capped with a big come from behind win. Then after losing 2 a team that ususally gives up in getaway games beat the NL Cy Young award leader to save a series. and that happened just last week.

        • SuicideWatch says:

Unfortunately what we are witnessing and will witness over the next week or so is a statistical correction back to .500 to offset the 10 winning streak.

The Mets are what they are and that’s a .500 team….

      • X-Man says:

Suicide my man, chill out a little. Didn’t you say the same thing last time the Mets Played the Sillies and Johan lost the first game? What happened after that? Little short on memory?

        • SuicideWatch says:

I’m just calling it like it is, the Mets have been a .500 team or below for 18 months, it’s only logical that they will lost 7 of 10 now to offset the 10 game winning streak.

Their almost halfway there, they have lost 3 of 4 now, figure they lose the next 2 to Philly, then lose 2 of 3 to the Cards and that’ll put them right on track to be .500 again.

        • teufelshuffle86 says:

Something tells me you didn’t win any grammar competitions in grade school. And where do you come up with this 18 months thing?

        • X-Man says:

It’s not impossible, but I doubt it, it’s just taking them some time to get back in sinc after the break. This is a different team than the one we were witnessing the first half of the season. We will acquire another bat for the outfield and Church will be back. But at the same token, I wouldn’t be shocked if your prediction came thue., I just choose to be more positive about it. Your name fits you perfect man! LOL

        • Two-By-Four says:

We won’t know the true implications of this game until at least a week passes. Will it serve as a spring board for a struggling Phillies team? Only time will tell.

It takes a special mentality to be a closer and if Sanchez had converted on this save opportunity it would have been his first as a Met.

Santana said he was fine and could have gone out for the ninth. He is the best pitcher on the staff and if he is not spent he has a right to go out there and nail down the victory.

Feliciano has not been doing the job lately and the Mets have to take a hard look at him. And if you don’t think every game counts just two more wins last year puts the Mets in the playoffs even with the meltdown. This game counts as two games since it is a Mets loss and a Phillies win. BTW how do you think Yankees fans would be reacting if they lost a game like this to the Red Sox.

You have to admire the mental toughness of the Phillies. They just don’t quit. They also seem to be mentally sharper on the field than the Mets.

I believe the wind milling by the third base coach was simply an attempt to seek an alternate form of energy. He must be admired (and fired).

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

I don’t know, the fact that the Mets still have won 7 out of 11 against the Phils?

        • SuicideWatch says:

How’s the work out last year when the Mets took the first 7 of 11??

It ended with the Phillies winning the last 6 or 7 straight.

  465. Tha Prowler says:

somewhere willie is smiling right now…

    • X-Man says:

No he’s not because he knows deep down inside the Mets would never be only one game out if he was still managing, more like 9 or 10 out.

  466. SuicideWatch says:

Unfortunately what we are witnessing and will witness over the next week or so is a statistical correction back to .500 to offset the 10 winning streak.

The Mets are what they are and that’s a .500 team.

  467. LL says:

This is all on the bullpen. In retrospect, it would’ve been good to keep Santana in, especially after the last time he face the Phils which resulted in a similar loss. But starting the 9th, even without Wagner, you should expect that your 8th inning guy can get the job done, especially with a 3 run lead!!!! The bullpen sucks. This is all on the bullpen!!!!

The worst thing about this game is that it’s another fantastically pitched game by Santana going down the drain. The Mets have only won 1 game in the last 9 that Santana has pitched. The bullpen has blown 5 Santana wins. Santana has done exactly what he was supposed to do. W/L records are overrated. Look at Santana’s ERA.

  468. LL says:

I can’t handle this! Tomorrow can’t come fast enough. We need the next 2 games badly.

  469. fortleemets says:

How come this site gets about 10X more comments during losses than wins?

    • Two-By-Four says:

People come here to vent and cry. When the Mets win they go out celebrating. :)

      • rd says:

It’s actually refreshing to see most blogs dropping the pom poms and telling it like it is…… Jerry Manuel made a huge mistake not bringing out Santana in the ninth…… It’s 100% on him making a horrible decision with no closer available, and Santana with 15-20 pitches left in him…..

  470. AzMetsFan says:

I’m still very irked by this loss

  471. fongulalou says:

Brutal,Brutal Loss!, Again, with Wagner unavailable Santana
cant atleast START the 9th??-And the Pen!?!–Come-on!
I know the phils have alot of heart but, Come-on!
Meanwhile,Arizona gets a solid and likely best RP who will be
moved by the deadline for a Slap hitting second baseman and
Thats it?!?-good thing omars got his finger right on the pulse!
    b/t/w does this mean Ari.intends to go all-out to re-sign Hudson?–Its O.K.though, I’m sure we’ll get the big-righty bat of
Marlon Byrd on deadline day. That’ll put us over the top!
